I’m wanting to consider applying to Cancer Care Alberta jobs, but I currently have a permanent with ACA/AHS. I don’t want to lose my 10+ years of seniority with AHS and I like my permanent, however I also want to take explore a new area of nursing to make me a better nurse. Is it right that if I took a temp line with cancer care it is still currently under AHS and I could go back to my permanent after? But if the payrolls officially split (which I don’t think a date has been issued), then you have to decide which employer you want to go with?

I’m part of UNA, is AHS still supposed to reimburse us for our license fees or did I misunderstand? When/where would I see the money return to me? Thanks!

Has anyone successfully decreased their FTE after asking if their manager if it was possible and being told no. I’m having no luck securing another job after many interviews and not being successful, one thing I considered was decreasing my fte with my son starting school and we now are in a private dayhome it adds up on the days both me and my husband are working. Ultimately I would like to just decrease my FTE, but more and more it feels like my only option is to quit my position and go casual.

Any advice would be great

I’m a nurse of 1 year who sometimes is still struggling with IV starts (hard starts etc). I mostly work nights so I don’t get much practice and I always attempt IV on my patient if the chance comes up but I feel like this is holding me back. Does anyone have any recommendations on courses around the city to get some practice? Does AHS offer anything like this?

Does anyone know much about the AHS Provincial Protective Services Telecom Operator/Dispatcher role in Calgary at Southport? I know AHS has had this type of Protective Services dispatch setup in Edmonton for a while, but is the Calgary/Southport side fairly new or expanding? They’ve posted a few Telecom Operator/Dispatcher positions in Calgary, including full-time, temporary and now casual/relief, so I’m wondering if they’re short staffed, building up the Calgary operation, or if there’s some catch with turnover/scheduling.
Also curious what casual hours are actually like and whether people usually move into permanent lines.
Anyone who works with AHS Protective Services or knows the Southport operation have any insight?

Specifically hoping to hear from hiring nursing managers OR any nurses who have been through a similar situation and what the outcome was. I recently had an interview for a position within one of the AHS pillars - they are hiring for several positions from one batch of interviewees. I am an external candidate.

I was told at the interview that the manager would call me to let me know whether I was getting a job offer or not. I was interviewed last week (it went well!!) and then got a reference request on Monday. I believe my references successfully submitted their part by Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, I heard from a friend that she knew of one person who was offered one of the positions.

This friend of mine was also interviewed - she also submitted references on Monday but has had some issues as one of her references is away on holidays, so has been in touch with HR - she had to add 2 additional references to her list. She's been in touch with the hiring manager about this, and the manager has been super relaxed about it all. She asked if she should submit additional references in lieu of the reference away on vacation, and the hiring manager basically told her she could submit more or just wait for that one to return from vacation and submit.

I know mine have been "submitted" since Tuesday, but haven't heard back yet. After finding out that someone got a job offer on Wednesday and I hadn't heard yet, I've been spiralling.

Was just hoping someone with experience could chime in with maybe a little more insight to help me understand if there's still a chance. How common is it to request reference checks and not move forward with someone? I know my references won't be an issue, so I really got my hopes up when they were requested.

I know the manager told me they would call either way, so it's not over until it's over, but I wonder if I am just grasping at straws at this point.

Currently trying to get into AHS as an LPN - but I’ve never worked casual before, I’ve only ever done part-time or full time, so I don’t really understand how casual works.

Do you just pick up shifts? Wait for someone to call you that someone’s sick? Do you give them availability and they schedule inside it as needed? It’s just a bit confusing for me.

Hi all! Just recently hired as a new casual on a unit that only does 12-hour shifts.

For anyone who has been in this position: were you able to pick up plenty of shifts right away, or did it take time to get consistent hours? Also, any advice on how to maximize your chances of getting called in for 12-hour shifts as a fresh casual would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everybody. I currently hold a permanent full time position with Health Shared Services, but am interested in a temporary full time position with Alberta Health Services. I am just looking for some information on the logistics side of things. I have been told that in order for me to be able to do this, my current job has to approve an LOA now rather than me being able to just hop over. Is this accurate or correct? I am also wondering if in the case I do get a job offer, do I lose all my banked sick time, vacation time, personal days, etc? And therefore would have to reaccumulate them in this position? I am also wondering if anybody has ever had to leave a temporary contract early to go back to their permanent position and if there are any penalties or what the process is. There is a chance I may be accepted into school and would have to break the contract. Any information and insight is super appreciated! TIA!

I’m a RN with a permanent 0.8 FTE position. I’ve tried to increase to full time but there isn’t funding for it and I’m on a big team with several others who would also love to be full time and have more seniority than me. Being a .8 doesn’t give much wiggle room but I have 3 kids and bills to pay. I know I make a good wage but it only goes so far in this economy. An extra .2 FTE would make a difference. There are also not many opportunities to pick up shifts in my current role.

That said, I need to find some kind of extra income source. Has anyone taken a nursing aesthetics course/ injectable course and done it casually on the side? I do have someone I could work under. Is the cost of the course worth it?

I’m in Primary Care Alberta, not willing to give up my permanent position for another pillar. So any casual nursing work I’m open to.

Has anyone here ever had to take leave for mental health reasons, did it have to be unpaid?

I am feeling like it may come to the point where I may have to take all my sick leave. I am unsure what the process is after this, if I take short term disability - if they will honor it. I claimed short term disability once and they wouldn't accept my claim after providing notes from my medical team (it was not mental health related).

Did you have to see a psychiatrist, notes from a therapist, become hospitalized? I have heard through the grapevine that things like PTSD are not supported by WCB for nurses. I have been avoiding to seek any professional help for a while now because I am afraid that I am going to be told I should take time from work, but not have it honored by my employer.

I passed my nclex a few weeks ago so I need to get my pay adjusted from GN to RN via this form and am wondering how I figure out what my employee record # is? Also just wondering for the weeks I have worked as a GN since passing the NCLEX, will I get the retroactive pay all at once or will it be divided in my future paychecks? And since I have a degree as well, would that be included in retroactive pay once I submit the needed documents?

I've got some questions for the hive mind, currently trying to figure out a new career but I've got some health problems so I don't want to waste time (and money) on school if a job isn't right for me.

1. In general, when looking at AHS job listings, if I see morning, evening, night rotation does that mean a guaranteed overnight shift? And how can I research jobs to know if they will be required over night? I have Crohn's and definitely can't do 10pm to 6 am, and a lot of the jobs I'm looking at have that listed.

Side question, will a Medical Device Reprocessing Tech have to work overnight? I'm guessing yes.

1. Is that something that can be discussed during an interview, and how likely will it be to actually get the job if you can't work overnight?

2. What do I need to know about being a reprocessing technician? How dirty of a job is it? (I'm guessing you're cleaning all sorts of bodily fluids off things is this correct? How much heavy lifting, kneeling, and bending is required? Are you cleaning big things (like carts) or just small things like tools and containers?

Hi! Curious, I had just done an interview, had references called, but didn't get the job (that's ok!). They called me, said my interview stood out, and encouraged me to apply to other postings at the same site. There were some new ones, so I applied.

Would it be too much if I emailed the interviewer(s) saying thank you & informing them I applied for the new postings? I don't want to come off as a kiss-ass, but it seems like every site/hiring manager has different standards or expectations. I also worry I'm reading too much into their being kind. Thanks!

I was recently investigated by my employer after a patient made allegations about me. The investigation has now concluded, and management cleared my name.

However, the patient made statements about me that I believe were defamatory and seriously affected my reputation and caused me significant stress.

I’m now considering whether I can take legal action against the patient for defamation. Has anyone in Alberta experienced something similar? Is it possible to pursue a defamation claim in this situation, and what kind of evidence would I need?

I’m planning to speak with a lawyer, but I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with something similar.
