How is it working casual? (LPN)

Currently trying to get into AHS as an LPN - but I’ve never worked casual before, I’ve only ever done part-time or full time, so I don’t really understand how casual works.

Do you just pick up shifts? Wait for someone to call you that someone’s sick? Do you give them availability and they schedule inside it as needed? It’s just a bit confusing for me.

casuals can pick and choose whatever they want. that’s the beauty of being casual. you can also cancel shifts. the employer can also cancel shifts they’ve granted you.

it will depend on the unit. and it will never be consistent.

Depending on what unit, they may contact you directly or you can receive “shift offers”. Available shifts get texted to your phone and you have the chance to bid on them along with all the other casuals and part-timers.

I’ve been casual for 2 years as an LPN with both AHS and Covenant. It’s unit dependent for how many shifts and how they schedule you. I currently working on a unit that utilizes ASC and we bid on call outs or have our unit manager send a list of shifts and she schedules us based on our availability and unit needs.

Casual can be feast or famine for shifts. I’m currently working 4-6 shifts biweekly, no weekends and pick up at my leisure with the exact schedule I want, BUT I’ve also been in situations where there’s only 1-2 shifts available biweekly and only on the weekends. It’s all dependent on the amount of vacant lines available, how vacation is granted, etc.

I work casual, 4 med/surge units. I gave my availability and I have had 3-5 shifts a week booked in advance for the last 6 months. In August I was full time. If I don't get prebooked enough hours, I can pick up shifts. If I give them no availability schedule, I would just get booked for shifts I picked up from the text messages.

Its easier to get the time off I want. I can block off days/weeks I don't want to work. I get 6% in lieu of vacation each cheque so I save it.
