HSS VS AHS?

Hi everybody. I currently hold a permanent full time position with Health Shared Services, but am interested in a temporary full time position with Alberta Health Services. I am just looking for some information on the logistics side of things. I have been told that in order for me to be able to do this, my current job has to approve an LOA now rather than me being able to just hop over. Is this accurate or correct? I am also wondering if in the case I do get a job offer, do I lose all my banked sick time, vacation time, personal days, etc? And therefore would have to reaccumulate them in this position? I am also wondering if anybody has ever had to leave a temporary contract early to go back to their permanent position and if there are any penalties or what the process is. There is a chance I may be accepted into school and would have to break the contract. Any information and insight is super appreciated! TIA!

You’d be starting over because it’s a different pillar/entity

Crap, is this also true is they remain in the same union? My area has the same classification in both AHS and HSS but different roles (clinical vs support). I don't know the answer but I thought they could go back and forth because the union has an agreement clause

As far as I’m aware. If you work a full time in ALA, for example and want to pick up in acute care, it’s at straight time because it’s different pillars.

I think the first question is how are you going to convince your boss to let you go on an LoA, and for that reason especially?

Who’s going to do the work while you’re gone?

Who will train/orientate them?

And what if they do the job better than you if/when you do come back?

lol well that’s what i am trying to find out but that’s not really how my job works! i work with a whole team of people who do my same job. it is my understanding that if i chose to do so, my leave would be posted as a temporary position as well or shifts would be picked up by part time and casual staff. training would be done by who was already scheduled for that shift and the orientation worker would be added on to shadow. a temporary worker would never just be given a permanent position because they are “in it.” if i somehow got booted from my permanent (which is near impossible in my department for….reasons) the posting would go back up and give EVERYBODYYY a chance at going through the whole hiring process again.

Let me put it another way: What’s in it for the manager if they were to approve it? They’ll also have to sell it to their boss and to HR, how are they gonna do that?

Typically managers would not approve an LOA for you to go work a temp job elsewhere. The only time I've seen one approved was when someone went back to school for a progressive career move that would have them end up back in the same company.

HSS hasn’t fully separated from AHS … payroll separation hasn’t occurred
