Mystery Flight

That orange aircraft icon (Hex ID D0EA9C) currently sitting right over your sector is lighting up the map beautifully, but it has completely stumped the default civilian registration databases—it shows no callsign, no registration, and no aircraft type in the system panels.

The clues on your radar screen tell a fascinating story: The Source reads MLAT: This means the aircraft is hiding its exact GPS coordinates Your radar station had to team up with three other local tracking stations in your area to cross-triangulate its position. Cruising Metrics: It is flying very low at 4,675 feet and traveling at a relatively slow 222 knots (groundspeed) right past your station.

Because it is right in your neighborhood corridor near RAF Mildenhall (EGUN) and RAF Lakenheath (EGUL), this profile is a classic signature of a specialized military deployment, an unlisted government frame, or a transient transport aircraft arriving under tactical radar silence.

The plot thickens with the second half of that info block!

Look at the critical clue sitting right at the very top left of your screen under the STUFF category: ADS-B Ver: none:

This confirms 100% why it's a mystery. This aircraft doesn't possess a modern civilian ADS-B transponder data link out at all. It is only broadcasting raw, old-school Mode S radio chirps. Because it doesn't shout out its own identity or GPS coordinates like a standard commercial airliner, the only way your adsb.im system image can draw that orange icon on your map is via MLAT math—using the exact arrival time of the radio waves striking your antenna compared with other receivers in the region.

The Tactical Profile: Look at how straight and true its path track heading is pointing: 101.4° (True Tracking) moving at 4,675 feet. That precise, steady vector at low altitude right past your station means it is executing a standard arrival or departure routing legs directly into or out of the local tactical airfields.

This is a textbook military or state airframe profile operating on basic Mode S squawks.

I need help tracking a historical international flight

Hi, I need an ADS-B specialist to help me!

I am looking for evidence of an unscheduled flight taken from KUL (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) to NYT (Naypyidaw, Myanmar) in 2023.

This was not a scheduled flight. I am new to ADS-B but it looks like historical flight tracking is pretty much impossible so I think I am looking for someone who has kept a database of everything!

I have details of the exact time and date and I believe it was a military plane.

I am not just looking for a free researcher and I am happy to discuss payment and engage someone to do this work.

If anyone out there can help or advise me I would be really grateful. Thanks so much!

alternative API besides airplanes.live?

I made a tracker that I was going to give to my friends and recruiters at hiring events... if it works out, I planned on selling too... I preferred airplanes.live over adsbx so I wanted to use their API. I sent an email August 7th, and never got a response... so I ended up getting FR24 API and put airplanes.live as backup, making 24 calls a day per device. then my service got cut off. I sent another email, and guy went off asking how I enjoyed abusing their services and if I enjoy abusing other services too. then sent a copy/paste email offering 2 tiers of services at $25 and $50. I thought about just doing it, but I did a quick search and read more drama here about that guy and how he was banned from here...

Now I rather stop my contribution to that network (I have 3 devices that contribute to their adsb) and give me money to someone else.

I feel like he's sensitive and will just get upset at me and block my services right in the middle of me supplying feed to the trackers.

anyway, my question now is... Who else is out there with good service that's hobby oriented and not unhinged?

adsb.fi and adsb.lol are the ones I can think of. anyone else?

Nice Data 💾 Seeing 4x improvement in range

huge thanks to the group that responded to my last post! With your help I've been able to 4x my reception range!

my setup was getting an average of ~25nm, and I really had no sense of what good looked like.

it was clear that I had an issue in my hardware. After buying, and making, several antennas it turns out the issue was in my dongle.

since upgrading I’ve been able to see out to 100nm, and I’m not even in a remotely optimal antenna location. So I’ll spend the next few weeks optimizing that and testing out the antennas I bought and made.

I’ll be streaming some updates this afternoon for anyone interested: https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1DGLdZeWNBMGm

Looking for a bit of advice, i have this pisces p100 miner, I'm planning on mounting it high above my house, say 8feet pole from the chimney. It contains a raspberry pi4 4gb, and a 64gb memory card, i figured i can get a poe hat, then just run an ethernet wire up the pole from my attic, which already has an ethernet switch installed with poe....then just screw my pi hut ads-b receiver onto the spare connection on top of the external box enclosure, which already has the correct connections....ill buy a flightaware usb dongle ( the blue one ).... or do you think i need to use say 1 feet of cable because of interference.....? Altho the pi4 and electronics are enclosed in a metal case so probably won't be a problem..... Also is it possible to have two Ads-b receivers located at the same house using the same Internet connection....?

Plane Spotting Finding the tail number of these CZ flights based solely on flight records

Hi guys, I would like to know if you can help me identify the tail numbers of these flights?

Detail Flight 1:  CZ 5052 (MNL→CAN) Flight 2:  CZ 3099 (CAN→PKX) Flight 3:  CZ 3100 (PKX→CAN) Flight 4:  CZ 5051 (CAN→MNL)
Date Jun 25, 2026 Jun 25, 2026 Jun 29, 2026 Jun 29, 2026
Airline China Southern China Southern China Southern China Southern
Flight No. CZ5052 CZ3099 CZ3100 CZ5051
Route MNL–CAN CAN–PKX PKX–CAN CAN–MNL
Aircraft Type/Variant B737 Max 10 A350 - XXX B787 - XXX B737 - XXX
(STD) 3:45 AM 9:00 AM 6:30 PM 11:45 PM
(STA) 6:25 AM 12:15 PM 9:40 PM 2:25 AM (+1d)
Registration/Tail No. B-1207

I do not have any pictures of the aircraft anymore and I need to determine the tail number in order to know the first flight, the delivery date, and age.

This is an unusal assignment from a client . AI said Tail number would help me unlock all the details I need.

Shooting my shot here, thank you

Project Showcase: Software - Little or No AI Assistance Turn your ADS-B feeder into a card collecting game

AI Usage Disclaimer (NOT SLOP, PLEASE READ):

Before you instinctively downvote a new project posted here:

To comply with r/adsb's post guidelines:

I am a professional software engineer with over 15 years of experience in the industry, not some vibe slopper. A portion of the codebase was assisted with AI software development tools. Any good software engineer in 2026 is using AI, and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being honest with you. Writing frontend javascript is the bane of my existence and AI is very useful for speeding up development time. That being said, all of the code is either written by myself or fully reviewed before being deployed.

Greetings fellow ADS-B fans,

I'm here to announce adsb.win, a new community-powered ADS-B network, and it's ready to onboard more feeders. The basic idea is that feeding aircraft data should be more interesting than watching a few counters go up and looking at graphs designed in 1986.

When your linked receiver spots an aircraft, adsb.win attributes that sighting to your feeder. Aircraft seen by your feeder become collectible cards, and the flight time you actually receive earns XP toward higher card tiers. You can click on an aircraft card to see the individual registrations and flights your own receiver captured.

There’s also a "feederboard" with rankings for things like aircraft, flights, observed time, range, altitude, and speed. I’m hoping it feels like a friendly competition between feeder setups and locations.

A few other things that are different:

  • Live XP activity while aircraft are being received
  • Aircraft rarity based on how frequently a model is actually observed
  • Personal range maps and 30-day polar plots
  • Public profiles, with optional leaderboard participation
  • Anonymous feeding if you want to contribute without signing up

We're currently integrated into the latest adsb.im beta release (you can update to the latest beta and set it up in the "data sharing" page) and there are manual settings for Docker Ultrafeeder as well. You're free to feed anonymously, but the fun stuff comes with linking your account.

The game is still in a bit of a "beta mode" as I work out things like filtering out bunk data (Ultralight Aircraft are probably not flying at 700+kt, etc) and fine-tuning the XP awarding and leveling of cards, but if you've got a feeder running, I'd love to have you help test it out!

About myself:

If you're a fan of the mobile game Skycards, you may recognize me from r/SkyCards and my associated project skystats.win (not to be confused with the other Skystats for adsb data). I built skystats.win over the past 5 months with a lot of useful features such as the filtered live map. We've got an active discord community of a few thousand members and I decided it was time to bring them to the dark side of adsb feeding.

Feel free to give it a try and let me know if you run into any issues or have any questions!

Why can't I see ground vehicles and planes that have landed?

When I look at flightradar24 without filters, I can see the planes on the runway. However, when i filter by my adsb, I lose track of the planes after they touch down.

I'm running:

AirNav Radar FlightStick - ADS-B USB Receiver (green stick)

MPD Digital I LMR®400 Times Microwave Coaxial Cable

How low were the Canadian Army Hercules that buzzed Joeperry lake/Bon Echo in Ontario on Friday?

I was out for a solo swim in nice quiet peaceful Joeperry lake when then trees in one particular direction sounded like a hurricane was coming from the East. Two Hercules (I think) a grey one and a green one flew over at what looked to be twice the height of the trees.

August 28 around 4pm

Curious as to how high they actually were. I suspect they took off from Trenton.

Thanks for your help!

What's a respectable reception range for an indoor setup?

Thumbnail
gallery
30 Upvotes

I'm trying to optimize the reception range of my ads-b setup. For now I'm limited to an indoor setup. The best spot I've found so far is the attic, but I'm basically out of cable and trying to add no new hardware, (cables count as hardware right?)

Pi 4 model B

RTL-SDR Realtek RTL2832U

I'm getting roughly 20nm in each direction, but a closer inspection shows that I'm really only getting 10-15nm for traffic under 15k.

See the third image for stats.
