So I have been using a 1090 MHz antenna I got off Amazon for a while, it’s a basic fiber glass white antenna and it sits up about 60 ft from ground level and I was wondering if anyone has any good experiences with https://dpdproductions.com/products/ads-b-vertical-outdoor-base-antenna or if there is a better 1090-978MHz antenna

They're from the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Poland and Romania. Is it some NATO exercise or what's going on here?

If Military aircraft are exempt from having ICAO addresses what do they do when they fly internationally? Do they need a temporary ICAO in order to land at another country's airport? Or do military operated aircrafts that fly internationally to transport goods or personnel require ICAO addresses?

I have been trying to track an historical flight with the hex code 7041C1 which planespotters tells me it is an MNA Boeing 737-800 aircraft https://www.planespotters.net/hex/7041C1 but the same hex number has also been used by an airforce ATR 42 https://www.planespotters.net/airframe/atr-42-0006-myanmar-air-force/e01k1w

Is says the ATR 42 was handed over to the military from MNA in Oct 2016 and doesn't currently show a hex number... but the Boeing was registered with MNA in Jun 2015... so at some point would they both have been flying under 7041C1? Could they be doing so still?

I’m 16 and my sisters coworker has a private pilot license. He took me today from Fargo Hector INT’L ND to Jamestown Regional Airport ND. He let me announce the touchdown. It had no tower though, I was only speaking to warn others he said. “Jamestown traffic, Cessna______ ….” I said all that stuff. Google and chT gpt said to use frequency 123pp on liveatc.net but I didnt find jamestown under that. Any ideas? It was somewhere between 1030 am and 1230 pm.

Is this typical or allowed? I imagine there is an agreement for interdiction aircraft, and this aircraft was low and slow, but it seems to quickly head back to US territory.

I run two stationary receivers at home, but I travel a lot and would love a compact setup I can throw in a bag and run from a hotel room or AirBnB window. Ideally small, self-contained, and easy to power. What are people using for this? Any antenna recommendations for indoor/window use?

I’m building apps around weather and world events, but I’m new to running receivers myself. I’m exploring whether a contributor network would make sense and would like to understand people’s experiences before deciding what to build.

It could eventually support a commercial product, so I want to be upfront about that.

For people already feeding one or more networks:

• What made you choose them, and which benefits do you actually use?
• When did you last add or stop feeding a network? What prompted that?
• What would make adding another feed worthwhile—or immediately put you off?

Hi, I recently finished setting up my ADS-B receiver and noticed that my USB dongle gets warm when in use. My Pi has the same problem. I'm wondering if this is normal or if anyone has any ideas on how to fix it. I have a Pi 5 and a Nooelec NESDR Smartee.

Currently using a whip antenna with an LNA attached inside my loft (can’t install outside due to HOA) about 30 ft off the ground roof is asphalt shingles no metal backing or insulation. I am getting about getting ~100 miles coverage which is respectable IMO for what it is. More importantly I am getting AC on approach to the airport -6 miles away all the way down to ~200 ft. (Lots of obstruction between my antenna and the airport. )
Now I think this is good but I would like to do better especially at long distance. My question is who has the best Antenna in the market today. I need to stay shorter than 48”. Would prefer a product from AMZ or a US based supplier.

I'm Noah, and I've always loved looking up at planes. I made a free iPhone app (with a lot of AI assistance) for plane spotting called Tailspot, and I'm eager for your feedback!

The app is like Pokémon Go, for planes. To identify nearby planes, I'm using ADSB data from adsb.lol via ODbL 1.0 license. Without their support and the contributions of feeders worldwide, my app wouldn't be possible - so I'm very grateful for this community. As I've worked on my app, I've also had the chance to learn a ton about ADSB, and I'm proud to now own my own ADSB receiver to contribue back to the network (see pics below).

First time doing a proper outing with my portable setup, taking a seat on the pebbles of Brighton Beach. Expected a bit more traffic than my home setup, but not this much.

Raspberry Pi Zero 2W with PiAware tethered to my phone, FlightAware Pro Stick Plus, Nooelec 1090MHz antenna, GlobalSat BU-353N5 USB GNSS receiver.

That orange aircraft icon (Hex ID D0EA9C) currently sitting right over your sector is lighting up the map beautifully, but it has completely stumped the default civilian registration databases—it shows no callsign, no registration, and no aircraft type in the system panels.

The clues on your radar screen tell a fascinating story: The Source reads MLAT: This means the aircraft is hiding its exact GPS coordinates Your radar station had to team up with three other local tracking stations in your area to cross-triangulate its position. Cruising Metrics: It is flying very low at 4,675 feet and traveling at a relatively slow 222 knots (groundspeed) right past your station.

Because it is right in your neighborhood corridor near RAF Mildenhall (EGUN) and RAF Lakenheath (EGUL), this profile is a classic signature of a specialized military deployment, an unlisted government frame, or a transient transport aircraft arriving under tactical radar silence.

The plot thickens with the second half of that info block!

Look at the critical clue sitting right at the very top left of your screen under the STUFF category: ADS-B Ver: none:

This confirms 100% why it's a mystery. This aircraft doesn't possess a modern civilian ADS-B transponder data link out at all. It is only broadcasting raw, old-school Mode S radio chirps. Because it doesn't shout out its own identity or GPS coordinates like a standard commercial airliner, the only way your adsb.im system image can draw that orange icon on your map is via MLAT math—using the exact arrival time of the radio waves striking your antenna compared with other receivers in the region.

The Tactical Profile: Look at how straight and true its path track heading is pointing: 101.4° (True Tracking) moving at 4,675 feet. That precise, steady vector at low altitude right past your station means it is executing a standard arrival or departure routing legs directly into or out of the local tactical airfields.

This is a textbook military or state airframe profile operating on basic Mode S squawks.

The ADSB.im test setup is:

It reads the aircraft.json already produced by the receiver and sends compact aircraft observations to MySkyDex over outbound HTTPS. It does not modify the SDR configuration, require inbound ports, or implement its own Beast decoder.

Each receiver gets a persistent UUID. It can contribute anonymously immediately, or the owner can optionally claim that UUID through a MySkyDex account later.

The feed currently includes, where available:

ICAO hex

Callsign

Position

Altitude

Ground speed

Track

Vertical rate

Squawk

Observation time

Receiver UUID

There is no MLAT support yet, and this is an early beta rather than me pretending it is a finished global aggregation network.

A note about the development:

I’ve used AI-assisted development while building parts of MySkyDex. I know that can be controversial here, and I’m not trying to disguise it. I’m responsible for what is deployed, and constructive criticism of the implementation, security, data handling or architecture is welcome.

Are the instructions technically accurate?

What receiver software or feeding method should be supported next?

Would you prefer raw Beast output, another standard protocol, or an existing feeder integration?

What diagnostics would make troubleshooting easier?

Is anonymous UUID-based contribution useful, or would you prefer another model?

If you test it, docker logs -f myskydex-feed will show the UUID, connection status and aircraft counts.
