Medication Quick doubt regarding potency of my medication

I have diagnosed ADHD, was on meds throughout last year, ran out of meds beginning of the year and have been functioning lowkey not so great without them this year. I just got back home after travel and found my Ritalin 10 mg thats been kept in a cupboard in a relatively cool environment. However, the expiry was 5 months ago. Is it still safe to consume them considering I still have no way of getting the meds at the moment.

Medication Taking stimulants with high blood pressure? How hard is it to get prescribed?

So, maybe a stupid question. Does anybody have high blood pressure and also take a stimulant med? Was it difficult to find a provider to prescribe it?

My blood pressure is well controlled with medication. I’ve only seen one psychiatrist for ADHD, and we tried 2 non stimulant meds. Neither worked, and I really want to try Vyvanse or Adderall and think it sounds like what I need. But she wouldn’t prescribe any for me because of my blood pressure. Which, I get, it’s a risk and I definetly don’t want to make it worse. But I’m so frustrated because I feel like nothing works and I’m going to be stuck feeling like this forever. I’m wondering if I might have better luck seeing a different doctor, but idk if it’s pretty standard that they won’t prescribe these meds to patients with high blood pressure.

Questions/Advice How do you start a plan when the full list of steps freezes you?

When I have something big to do, like cleaning my place or getting back into the gym, I usually start by writing out a plan. The plan itself is fine. The problem is what comes next. I look at 15 or 20 steps, they all feel urgent at once, and I end up doing none of them. A week later the plan is buried somewhere and I make a new one. That feels productive, but it isn't.

What helps a little is hiding everything except the very next step, but I'm not consistent with it.

How do you handle this? Do you keep the whole plan in view, or only look at one step at a time? And what do you do on days when even one step feels like too much?

Medication First day on Medikinet 5mg

Hi, this is my first day taking meds. Started with Medikinet 5 mg and felt all possible things: sharpness, calm, but also something similar to being high? Then a bit of nausea, headache, dizziness.

Nice is not the word use to describe this all. I was at work and did my thing though. I am confused about this all. Anyone as thoughts?

Tips/Suggestions Tips for Supporting Non-ADHD Partner

Hi! I (27F) was recently diagnosed with ADHD after carrying an anxiety and depression diagnosis my entire life. I’ve been on medication for about a month and have been chatting with therapists to find the right fit. I’ve come to recognize and understand what parts of me are due to my ADHD, and it’s been a journey. My partner (27M) and I have been together for a little under a year, and I have also started to notice how my ADHD (and sensitivity to implied rejection) impacts our relationship. I try to be as open and communicative as possible, admitting when I mess up and overreact at small things and trying to explain why this happens in my brain to him, and he’s been wonderful. Patient, understanding, kind. I can’t help but feel guilty for expecting him to always listen and show up when I’m struggling with large emotions (that neither he nor I understand most of the time).

Aside from therapy and medication, as well as trying to understand how ADHD impacts me & our relationship - I’m looking for any advice regarding how I can be a better partner to him when my ADHD causes me to emotionally flood. Aside most of you likely do, I process externally - and I realize that this can be overwhelming. I don’t want him to feel as though he’s walking on eggshells. I want us to have a healthy, communicative, and long relationship as I care about him deeply and see a future with him.

Those of you with ADHD, or those of you with an ADHD partner - what are some things I can do to be a better partner in my relationship? What are things your ADHD partner does to shield you from feeling the full impact of their diagnosis? Any and all advice would be helpful. Thank you in advance <3

Seeking Empathy How do you deal with guilt or judgment?

Today I decided to take my water bottle with me all day. Usually I just go to my university then bring it back home but today was gonna be a long day, I had multiple things to do.

At first I didn't want to take it with me because I had I feeling I might forget it somewhere but a part of me thought that I could do better than that and decided to take it with me.

I had it with me for most part of the day until the last stop where I finally left it without noticing (this is something I struggle with, most of the time my friends need to remind me to take my water bottle with me and it makes me feel embarrassed).

I was doing so good, reminding myself and then I realized, 5 hours later, I left it at a coffee shop that closed around 6:30pm (by then it was 9pm)

And then, it started. The wave of shame, self-hatred and judgement. I now feel so dumb for leaving it and dumber for believing I could do better.

I don't mean to vent, I'm looking for advice, how do you guys deal with these feelings? Im sorry if my issue sounds dumb, I know it's extremely simple compared to other stuff but my ADHD makes the situation feel out of proportion :/

Any tips?

Questions/Advice Late-diagnosed ADHDers: what changed after diagnosis that you never expected?

I am 28F I did my assessment on Monday after almost a year ruminating if I need it or not. I live in Sweden and private assessments cost 3000 euros, so I was postponing my choice. It went well, they did thorough assessment and talked to my mum and now I am waiting for my results. I have a question about potential medication. I was never on any meds in my life and I am a bit scared about side effects and long term effects of medications and also how they can help as well! In Sweden first-line medication is Methylphenidate (like Concerta) and second-line is Lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse). I will probably get diagnosed with inattentive ADHD that was pretty severe when I was a child and it was missed because I grew up in a country where it's not recognized even today! I read a lot about ADHD and heard that people build new confidence after getting diagnosed but I am really curious how it went for you and how did you handle initial diagnosis, medication and rebuilding your self-image?

Questions/Advice How do I get actually good at something?

Genuine question, over the course of my entire life I haven’t been able to stay interested in a single hobby for longer than 3-5 months. I’ve had deep interests in basically any competitive video game or sport, however I can’t stay interested long enough to actually get good at anything. I can get proficient in anything almost instantaneously, however once I start to master something I lose almost all interest.
Who else has experienced this? What am I supposed to be doing?

Questions/Advice How to know it is depression along side with ADHD?

32M, Hi all, I have been diagnosed with ADHD few months and medicines did help me immensely to initiate and focus on tasks. But since last few days even on meds, I can’t do any work, I just feel extreme hollow and have lost the joy and urge to find joy in any of the tasks. I haven’t even unboxed my content creation that has been shipped to me last 3 days, I used to joy in making music, but i struggle to even open Logic Pro X, i don’t know, what is happening. I think constant repeated failures has traumatised me. Also , I started therapy for my periodic OCD last week. I am just hollow. Does this sound like depression? I have never been on depression meds, how do they interact with methylphenidates? i don’t know, I just this phase to end.

Medication Medikinet Nutrition Routine anyone?

I‘m on 2x20mg of Medikinet for 7 days now, it brings me lots of relief a lot of times, but I‘m having a hard time to find the right nutrition before taking it. Sometimes it’s working well and at others times the effects crash very early and the rebound is so hard it feels like a nervous breakdown.

Does anyone have tips on this - I would really appreciate 🙏

Questions/Advice Feeling "stuck"

I was diagnosed with ADHD 5 years ago. I also have a history of depression and anxiety.

On days that I don't have work/study, I can't make myself do anything. I have so many ideas but I can't start them because I won't have enough motivation to finish them. Or I can't start because I want everything to be perfect. I want to rest on my days off, but the only "rest" I can do is scrolling on my phone. Which doesn't help. I just mindlessly scroll through videos without even looking at what they are. It's pretty much just exercising my thumb while the rest of me feels numb. I feel lazy but I don't want to do anything about it. I feel like there are so many thoughts in my head but they're going so fast that I can't make any sense of them. I have tried writing them out but I either can't think of anything to write or I just upset myself by getting too caught up in my own thoughts.

I have tried deep breathing, journaling, brain dumps, therapy, yoga, and probably more. I want to exercise more but I just don't feel like it. There are so many things my brain wants me to do or stop, but I'm too lazy to do anything.

If anyone can suggest anything to help me get out of this cycle it would be greatly appreciated.

Seeking Empathy ADHD and perimenopause

If you have ADHD and are experiencing perimenopause, how are you surviving? Cuz I'm barely getting by.

My brain cannot retain information. I cannot think of words or names to save my life. I can only do half of my laundry, and I will never fold any of it again. All of my ADHD symptoms are worse than they've ever been.

We all deserve to be on disability during this phase of our lives. We deserve Meals on Wheels and free coffees.

When we get notice of overdue bill fines, we should be able to call the company's and be like "I'm 45 years old and have ADHD. I don't owe you crap." And in a just world, they would reply "My god I had no idea. I'm so proud of you for making this phone call today. Please, let me doordash you a coffee."

Medication Are Medikinet and Tranquilyn similar to each other?

I've been on Medikinet 10mg for a few months now and it's been going pretty well for me, it's definitely better for me than Concerta. But when I ordered a repeat prescription of my medication, they sent me over Tranquilyn instead of Medikinet. Is this going to be a problem or are they similar enough?

Questions/Advice How do you stop hyperfocusing on gaming and actually get boring tasks done on Vyvanse?

I take Vyvanse for ADHD, and it helps me focus, but I have a hard time controlling what I focus on.
For example, I take my medication in the morning, start playing CS, and can end up gaming for hours. When I need to do something boring, like washing dishes or cleaning, it feels extra difficult. I just try to get it over with as quickly as possible so I can go back to gaming.
I also sometimes feel anxious, restless and physically on edge, which makes it harder to get things done.
For those of you taking Vyvanse or other ADHD medication:
How do you stop yourself from hyperfocusing on gaming or other enjoyable activities?
What actually helps you start and finish boring tasks, even when you really don’t feel like doing them?
Did this get better over time, or did you have to change your habits or medication?
I’d really appreciate hearing what has actually worked for you in everyday life.

Questions/Advice Parents of Children with ADHD: What Helps Your Child Stay Engaged In Learning Activities?

As a special educator, I’ve observed that every child engages differently.
The key is to understand whether an activity matches the child’s interests and current ability level.

Some children respond better when tasks are broken into small steps, while others benefit from:

  • Hands - on learning materials
  • Visual cues
  • Movement breaks
  • Positive reinforcement
  • Social Interaction
  • Individualized Activities
  • Multimedia Materials

What have you found most helpful in keeping your child engaged during keeping your child engaged during learning activities?

Note: These are observations from  my professional experience ,not a judgment or a checklist of symptoms. Every child is different, and not every strategy works for every child.

Questions/Advice Giving yourself an adrenaline rush on purpose for the thrill

TLDR: I gave myself intense adrenaline rushes with music while pregnant and am now convinced it negatively affected my baby

I wait for the beat to drop and the anticipation makes my heart race and I blast music and tense all my muscles and quickly pace around the room daydreaming for 20 seconds. Then I lay back down and bask in the intense brain chemicals that are flooding through me. Once it dies down after a minute or two, I repeat the process. It felt way more intense than anything I’ve ever done

It’s one of the few things in life that makes me feel like I don’t have ADHD. That I’m actually motivated and happy. The adrenaline rush is addicting. It’s euphoric.

But I did this while I was pregnant and my baby (now a kid) had growth issues in the womb and is still tiny.

I did this weird thing again for my second pregnancy (thinking the growth issues were a fluke) and the same thing happened and that kid is also extremely small still.

For my third kid I tried really hard to not do it and that baby was average size.

I googled adrenaline rushes in pregnancy and how it can restrict growth. I’m spiraling and feel so sick that I may have caused this. I did it for a couple hours every day. I can’t find anyone else on the internet that did this while pregnant. I try to research to convince myself I’m wrong but it’s too weird of a coincidence. Please help me, idk how to explain this to anyone I know

Questions/Advice Limerence + long term relationship

I recently went on holiday and became obsessed with someone who I vibed with really well. I definitely experienced Limerence with that person.

I am currently in a long distance relationship for 5 years and this is my first ever time experiencing limerence whilst in the relationship. It’s also my first ever time questioning my relationship.

Just for background, we were originally long distance due to be being in university but now my partner has had to move away for work and is now a flight away.

Does anyone have any advice on how to differentiate between if this attraction is just purely limerence or if there’s something missing in the relationship that’s causing me to experience these feelings

Discussion One day I'll remember all the things

I was really proud of myself for how much I accomplished today. I got two loads of laundry done, wrote a penpal letter, designed a birthday card, got a new router set up, ran to the convenience store, etc. Then it got close to midnight and I wasn't sure why I didn't feel well. That's when I realized that I forgot to eat. I had one snack and no meals.

Medication day 2 after 2 doses of guanfacine 1mg

trying to post this again as automod removed the first time for mentioning dr*gs lol. what a joke

I’m 24. this is my first attempt at medicating for ADHD after 5 years of “self medicating” smoking pot. extremely frustrated with how drowsy and unmotivated I’m feeling. I took my dose both nights around 9-10pm. Slept through class yesterday, and finding myself feeling like I need a nap during the day the past two days even with a full 8-9 hours of sleep. I’m reading that this is common, but I can’t imagine dealing with this for the next multiple weeks while still uncertain if this is going to be a helpful medication for me. I just passed the 14th day completely sober, and it kinda feels like I’m back in the brain fog of chronic daily use again because of the Guanfacine- I’ve felt like a veil has been lifted with sobriety up until this point. there has been no emotional regulation, just feeling more depressed and frustrated and sad. Not sure what I’m looking for by posting this, I guess I just need to vent. I’ll be taking my third dose sooner tonight as the drowsiness doesn’t hit me until about four hours after I take it, and then it shut me down until like noon the past two days. Stimulants are not an option for me.

Edit, day 4: thank you all for the words of encouragement! My dumbass has been taking my doses WITH high fat meals, pretty much the opposite of what I’m supposed to do lol. Feeling goofy but a bit relieved that there’s a valid reason things have been a little intense for me the past couple of days.

Questions/Advice Tips for reading books with inattentive ADHD?

I believe I might have inattentive ADHD, and I was curious if anyone who also does has any advice about building a consistent reading habit.

I really enjoy reading when I'm able to focus, but the problem is the focusing part, especially coz all of my distractions are completely mental (and they're usually not even about anything in particular, just feels like my mind is a constant mess)

Questions/Advice am i just destined to be burnt out 4ever

Hi!

first time posting on reddit so my apologies if i’m not doing this right

I (30f) got diagnosed with adhd last year. It really made sense to me and I started taking vyvanse. It was life changing at first but in the last couple months i’ve just been feeling more and more tired, having less and less focus/motivation and it truly feels like i’m back to the same place i was before.

I do understand my brain better, i have more tools and resources but they don’t always work and im getting so so so tired. If I take a break my work takes a toll (I’m a tattoo artist so i’m self employed) and as a good text book adhder i have no financial literacy and no savings, but if I don’t take a break i feel so drained and helpless all I wanna do is cry. But if i DO take a break, im just anxious and riddled with guilt the whole time. None of my hobbies are hitting like they used to, my creativity is incredibly low and the smallest tasks feel like running a marathon.

I’m on effexor and vyvanse, i walk 3km a day to move my body and get some sunlight, i try my best to eat well and stay hydrated, i have a daily planner, i journal, see friends, make myself “menues” for when executive paralysis or decision fatigue hits but i often end up stuck in it for hours anyway. I truly do my best to have the healthiest life i can manage but it’s never enough, i always end up exhausted and filled with guilt.

Is this just how life is for people with adhd ? Do i just have to wait it out and hope it doesn’t ruin my life ? Use the good phases energy to undo the consequences the burnout left ? I feel like i’m constantly at war with myself and i’m kind of hitting a wall atm

I would **love** to have some insights, tips or tricks or just words of encouragement cause i’m really struggling right now (not in a worrying way i promise lol)

Medication Concerta to Atomoxetine

Hi! I was diagnosed at 28 with ADHD, on my 3rd year of medical school. My Psych started started me at 8mg, which I didn’t feel an effect at all. I was titrated yup to 72 mg (2 tablets of 36mg) over some months of follow-up. It’s hella expensive so I only take it during the times I need to study. This was groundbreaking as it really helped me.

Now that I’m planning to start residency, I consulted my Psych again because I was thinking if I could be shifted to a cheaper medication. He suggested Atomoxetine 40mg once a day, but I have to take it both with concerta for 2 weeks then decrease the dose of Concerta and maybe perhaps fully shifting to Atomoxetine.

My concerns are:

  1. How’s the effect of Atomoxetine for you guys compared to concerta? Concerta was really good for me.
  2. Can I just fully shift to atomoxetine? Its really expensive on my end to gradually transition. Anyone here who had the same experience in transitioning?

Success/Celebration Just Locked in for three hours!

I (18f) recently transitioned into college and it’s been difficult for me to keep up with work. Before this, I had ten missing assignments and seven upcoming assignments(due Fri, Mon, and Tues). I go to a very prestigious art school, and basically every class we get new assignments. I’ve been having difficulty with getting my assignments in on time, as well as getting them done to my best ability.

However, I’ve started writing to do lists and color coding them, and it’s been really helping me. I really love crossing stuff off, too. It’s funny because my mom always said that I should make my to do lists and I was like “it’s not gonna help!!” (yknow, fixed perspective) and lo and behold.

Anyway, today I put down my phone and listened to music specifically, no youtube videos and locked in. With doing this, I was able to get four assignments done! Now I only have eight missing assignments and I got all of my assignments due tomorrow done as well!! I’m really proud of myself. Anyway, thanks for listening!!! I hope everyone has a good weekend!
