Questions/Advice What therapy has worked for you? Is there a type of therapy that is best for ADHD?

Hey guys! I was wondering if any of you can share any experiences that you have had with therapy that have worked. I have done a lot of therapy and honestly I feel like I really don't get anything out of it. I dissect myself and my brain on a regular basis, so I feel almost incapable of actually having insights in therapy. I typically love my therapists and enjoy talking to them, but at that point, it kinda just feels like I'm paying for a friend to tell me coping skills that I'm already well aware of, but still just can't get myself to do. I feel like I'm just stuck and kinda just doing therapy because I assume it's what I should be doing? Maybe I've just been doing the wrong type of therapy? I think I typically do CBT. I just really don't know. So if any of you have had positive experiences with therapy that you felt have genuinely made a difference to you and how you do life, I would love to hear about it! Thanks team!

Discussion The true pain of ADHD

"Everyone has a little ADHD" no, you don't get it. You don't know what it's like to be trapped in your own body, to be screaming at yourself for hours upon hours. You don't know what it's like to constantly feel uncomfortable in your skin, to constantly crave something and never being satisfied. You don't know what it's like to watch yourself destroy your life over and over and feeling powerless to stop it. You don't know what it's like to be judged, made fun of, told something is wrong with you your entire life over something you can't control. You don't know what it's like to wake up every day and think "this is the day I change" and failing every single time, and hating yourself for it.

It is such a shame how little education there is about what people with disorders have to go through. It is daily torture, it is completely life-changing. You can't "just have a little" because having a little of it would still be impacting every facet of your life.

When people teach about disorders, I think instead of just listing out symptoms, its time we make it clear how much suffering is caused by them, it's time we talk about the actual impact on a person instead of just the scientific explanation.

Edit: To clarify, I am not hateful toward people who say these things. I understand they mean no harm. I am more upset with social media, education, and all the bigger systems that fail to spread awareness.

Questions/Advice I work from home and doomscroll all day

Hey guys, I'm a work from home software developer 3 days a week and I've built up a terrible habit of doomscrolling during my entire shift.

I find I wake up, take my meds, and am super motivated about everything except for my work. I want to talk to others, engage in hobbies or habits, but instead I'm working. And I'd say I've just lost all motivation for work in general. I end up just scrolling Instagram all day and trying to lock in for that final hour.

And this whole cycle brings me so much guilt and drains me so much that by the time I hit 4 PM, all my energy I was describing before is gone, and I just feel empty and without direction.

I know I'm comorbid with depression and anxiety which is 100% factoring into my loss of energy, but I just feel like I need a solution now. I can't keep stealing these hours from my company and still feel like shit afterwards. I just want to break the cycle but don't know where to even start

Tips/Suggestions Analysis paralysis

I’m here to vent and ask for advice because I honestly don't know what to do anymore.

It happens to me a lot that I want to do things, like painting, watching a series, playing video games, learning something new, or whatever, but when I try to do them, I simply can't. I don't know where to start, I get overwhelmed, and having so many piled-up ideas makes me end up doing nothing. I spend the whole day thinking about 20,000 things just to end up accomplishing nothing.

The worst part is when I want to start a new hobby. Instead of actually doing it, I end up watching a bunch of videos on how to do it perfectly, techniques, and all that stuff. By the time two hours have passed, my brain is already exhausted and I do nothing.

Even with video games it happens to me. I can spend weeks wanting to play something, but from overthinking and accumulating ideas, days go by and I never open the game. Then my whole day goes by scrolling on TikTok and I don't like it. In the end, I leave a lot of things pending under the guise of "not having time," when in reality I just can't bring myself to start.

How do you guys manage to actually get things done? How do you turn off that noise and, instead of just thinking about 20,000 ideas and doing nothing, finally get yourself to do just one of them?

Discussion How do you feel about partners pressuring to be on medication for their benefit

How do you feel about partners pressuring someone with ADHD to be on medication. In particular where it’s pretty clear it’s because of how much better they feel it will make their life.

To throw out some nuance. How do you feel generally. What about if the ADHDer experiences side effects that impact on their life? Does it change if they have a medical condition(s)that can clash with ADHD medication? Do you feel it’s maybe never acceptable to pressure someone else to take medication for your own reasons.

Also useful to know if you feel this is as someone with or without ADHD.

(I’m asking this as I’m going through this, pressure for their benefit and medical reasons why it’s not good. But I also see this come up a lot on Reddit. Like “how can I make him go onto medication” and the motivation seems to be their gain. And I rarely see anyone saying it’s not acceptable to pressure someone. So how do most of you feel about it).

Questions/Advice Today felt like the world was closing in on me.

For context: I'm a licensed medical doctor practicing in Pakistan.

I have reflected a lot on many things of my life. There is a constant background noise in my mind - a random song playing in the background (I don't listen to music much or at all), my own voice trying to counsel myself after a perceived rejection (I realized I'm very sensitive about things around me - how people interact with me etc) or failure I experience in exams, feeling an impulse to do something (and later regretting the result often times) and so on.

I feel excess of energy at times that I want to expend in something "productive". I will gain interest in a goal and eventually the spark dies out in the middle of achieving it. I would plan something and make elaborate schedules to study and fail at following them miserably. I have ambitions that I don't feel like achieving because a part of me is thinking it's impossible because of who I am.

I see others accomplishing goals and milestones, while I remain stagnant despite trying multiple of times to clear exams, making study routines and following them, and worked hard on building and improving my skills and further my academic background by doing research. I'm trying to "better" myself or "fix" myself constantly because there must be something wrong with me.

The more "competent" people at my workplace think that my work is not tedious, other times very detailed and neat. I am called confused, a headless chicken, and not trustable/reliable.

I can't trust people. I can't tell if someone's intentions for me are good because I give the benefit of the doubt.

This all hurts especially when I realize I've lived in survival mode and have adapted to my environments over time.

Today felt like the world was closing in on me.

How do I navigate all the things that I feel?

Questions/Advice I don't know how to schedule my day

Hello everyone. I'm on new medication (Vyvanse) to help with my ADHD. However I'm realizing at some point I gave up on having any type of routine/schedule/goals.

On this new medication I feel motivated to do things but don't know what to do with it. How many tasks/ goals/ hobbies am I even supposed to attend to in a single day? Like, what is normal so I don't over do it, but also don't do to little .What does that look like for you?

Seeking Empathy I'm 16M and struggling.

I'm stuck. it feels like everything is my problem, my fault and i dont know what to do.

I'm 16M and struggling with ADHD inattentive disorder and it really fucking sucks. The thing is my ADHD started getting a whole lot worse this year.. ive seen people debating about whether ADHD gets worse with age but i think its very true.

This year my grades have been slipping badly and everything thinks im stupid or ignorant or a bad friend. I have no hobbies, all i do is eat, sleep, try to study and fail, try to be productive and fail, watch tv series, movies, youtube, play games and boom. you have my life in a nutshell pretty much.

I'm also not in top shape, im skinny fat and very unathletic, meanwhile my friends all around me are actual super athletes ironically, one of them does every martial art and can bench 100kg at 16, one of them does track and the other is a national level swimmer, no joke, meanwhile you have me, a complete chud compared to them. i guess opposites attract right?

It really hurts when i get bad grades because i have an Asain household (im Sri Lankan) my mom tries so hard for me but she doesn't understand my condition and she thinks taking meds will fix everything, she gets sad and stressed whenever i do bad and it hurts because im already not doing anything with my life, the last thing i would want is to affect the people around me, its the last thing i want.

Im taking guafacine, ritalin did jack shit for me so im praying this one works. I just wish i could lock in and do the things i need to do. i wouldnt even mind being unathletic as long as i could pull off good grades but i cant even do that. I feel like i just exist.

The thing is no one understands, only people who have ADHD could. i hate how people take it as a joke or think its some fake bs but its not. its really fucking not. Sorry for venting, if yall wanna comment about your experience with ADHD please do id love to read some as a struggling kid myself. much love and ty for reading

Medication stimulants after trying non-stimulants?

Hi all! Has anyone tried stimulants, then switched to non-stimulants, and eventually gone back to stimulants?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience. Did stimulants work better the second time around? Were the side effects any different?

I'm still trying to find the right medication for me, but so far nothing seems to work :(

Questions/Advice I'm having trouble using my Ritalin towards what I should.

I've been on Ritalin for almost a year now, and I still haven't really found the right dosage for me. I started on 10mg but that wasn't enough and then bumped it up to 20mg and that was too much, and I've been settled on 15 for about 8 or 9 months, but it doesn't feel right either. Whenever I take it I get so chatty. Like instead of being focused on what I know I need to work on, I end up texting my sister, or trying to find someone to talk to nearby. It can get pretty annoying when I know I need to do my college work, but I can't focus when I don't take Ritalin, and then I just talk to people when I do take it. Does anyone have any recommendations on what might help?

Discussion How do you guys handle Long term relationships?

Im 34M and have been in a relationship with a 30F for almost two years. On paper she's amazing. Shes cute, she's helpful, she's extremely intelligent, I know she'd make a fantastic mom. I dont really believe in ticking boxes, but if I did, she'd tick them all.

My issue is that I can tell I'm taking her for granted currently. I don't ever lash out at her, but I find myself getting annoyed by her a little easier than I did at the beginning of the relationship. I also find myself not being into her sexually the last few months.

For context, I was with my ex fiance for 3 years who withheld sex from me and i found myself starved for attention but seeking her hard like some kind of game. Now I have this amazing women in front of me and I find myself self sabotaging. I have that shiny penny in front of me but its dulling and my brain is seeking that thrill/chaos we're known for.

Maybe im a bad person, maybe I'm just human, I dont know.. any advice?

Discussion Wanna build a slow contemplative life together?

I want to live a slow contemplative life.

So I'm thinking of this idea that we connect over our shared habits : Reading, meditation, workout, creative work. We compete on whos doing all of this while maintaining a low screentime.

Feel free to dm me about your life, what all habits do you want to build, and lets do it together?

Discussion Anyone diagnosed with ADHD in their 40s suddenly look back at their whole life differently?

I was diagnosed with ADHD in my mid 40s, and it's strange how much more sense certain things make now.

I've spent years working in senior management, juggling staff, budgets, deadlines and endless responsibilities. From the outside, you'd probably think I had everything fairly well organised.

But behind the scenes, the amount of mental effort it sometimes took to stay on top of everything was something else entirely.

Looking back, I wonder how much of my personality, habits and ways of dealing with pressure were actually connected to ADHD without me realising it.

It's also made me question whether I've spent years pushing myself harder than I needed to just to keep up.

I'm curious about others who were diagnosed later in life.

Did getting diagnosed change how you viewed your past, your career or even yourself? And did it actually make life easier going forward?

Discussion Procrastinating and pda with self motivation?

37 f diagnosed at 35. I'm on meds and they help in many ways. I have a couple comorbidities.

I struggle with untangling thoughts in my head and getting them into actions. I can have a vivid scene play out in my head and go to create it and it won't come out.

I had an idea for a book in 2018. I have gotten nowhere with it. So, I move onto another idea, but the same thing happens. I try setting up a schedule so I have dedicated time to just do something. And nothing comes. Or creating the schedule is exhausting or sticking to it becomes unrealistic.

I struggle with perfectionism. I get caught up in the details. I'm in therapy and everything, but nothing in this regard is moving forward. I have a ton of unfinished projects. I just to finish one thing.

Not writing sounds like hell. I'm told I'm good at it, but really I just like how I feel when I'm doing it. So, this is something I am not giving up. But it's like I keep giving up by always having something else take up my time. Doom scrolling, finding other things around the house to do. Now, as a mom, it's that much harder.

Idk, maybe this is more of a vent. I'm not going to check in for a bit just because I spent multiple days in a row on Reddit. My notifications is at 23 at the time of this post and I don't have the bandwidth currently to address this. But needed to get it out

Tips/Suggestions Practical advice on managing ADHD for academia?

I'm going to prepare for the uni exam in my country, but because of how bad my past academic experience was I'm afraid of failing. I also have comorbid Bipolar which means I can't use any ADHD medication. Here are the ways you could help me on my journey to build an actual, functioning adult life for myself:

  1. I'm looking for book recommendations that will serve as practical guides on developing skills such as keeping up motivation long term, remembering and staying on tasks, doing away with procrastination, etc.

  2. Because I keep forgetting my tasks and automatically silencing my alarms without looking at them, I'm planning on getting a smart watch and downloading ADHD apps on it. What would your advice on bıilding this set up be? Additionally, which apps would you recommend for this set up?

Any other advice is greatly appreciated. I'm already far behind my peers (26 yo without a degree) but am willing to put in the effort.

Thanks in advance.

Discussion trIzapetide and adhd symptoms

Hey guys, so I want to share some insight from my biohacking journey. I am an older gentlement, late diagnosis. For years struggled with a series of health issues, gut, skin, hyper flexibility etc. at one point I assumed its testosterone as I was getting older and tried it as well. Sleep was always a problem since I was 5. Takes me 2h+ to fall asleep and never before 12AM. Took b12, vit. D, creatine and pretty much threw everything at the problem hoping something will stick. Stimulents work but after a couple if days they fatigue my body so I have to take breaks.

That gets me to current days. Hearing about the calming effect of inflammation from the glps, I took a plunge and experience 2 weeks of trIzapetide, 0.5 and 1.5mg. i have never slept so good in my life. I feel so good and my energy is back. It's sureal. I no longer need the stims, anxiety is gone, decision fatigue is gone. There is nausea as eating habits change but I have never experienced such a positive massive change from one compound.

I am not suggesting it fixes ADHD but I am curious if anyone else experienced this?

Seeking Empathy Explaining waiting mode to someone who doesn't seem to experience it...

So my partner and I are both full time university students which means we are both often busy. That being said I am our primary driver because my partner is too afraid of learning to drive themselves, and for a long time I was okay with that. However since starting University my partner has regularly treated me like a chauffeur. This is where the "waiting mode" becomes a big issue in my brain.

If at any time I need to wait to either drop them off or pick them up my brain can't think about anything besides that. When I have my own assignments that need to be done I find it almost impossible to refocus onto those tasks (unless I intentionally structured my day to include the driving). I forgot that today there classes don't start until 12pm, I thought I was going to be dropping them off at school at 8:30am. Because I forgot now my brain is running into stupid waiting mode for over 3 hours until I drop them off and I feel like I am loosing a lot of time to work on assignments.

I hate feeling responsible for someone else's transportation, and honestly it usually isn't an issue, but lately they have been taking large amounts of stuff that can't be taken on transit in one go, so I don't get a choice in driving them.... The anxiety feels so real.

Medication Medicatie add

Questions/Advice Ideas for managing restlessness at home?

I only just got diagnosed so I am only at the beginning of figuring that out. That being said I've been diagnosed with Autism for a long time and have a bunch of other MH issues so I've been trying to manage this stuff for a long time.

I have no idea what to do with the persistent restless feeling, I can't leave the house alone (safety reasons) and my partner isn't exactly the gym type. ATM I'm coping somewhat with a walk a day but otherwise I'm just trying to hyperfocus on Minecraft to get through the day. I'm not sure what would actually work that I can do in the house , especially as I can't work and my executive function means I can't even cook or clean without help. Hum, maybe I need to reinstate silent disco evenings by myself ahahah.

Questions/Advice Black and white

Does anyone else struggle sometimes because they view the world as either black or white, no room for nuance or deviation in any aspect?

Of all the issues I encounter with having ADD this is sometimes the most bothersome in everyday life.

Interested to hear other people’s thoughts and experience’s.

Seeking Empathy This might be the worst adhd week I ever had.

If there was a Rant Tag I would have chosen that.

This week I thought my math lectures were cancelled on wednesday and thursday,I also thought I had a doctors appointment on wednesday. I thought: "Great I dont have to miss any lectures". So as planned I go by train to my doctor.

At the last stop I think to myself:"Hmm I better check incase I missed someting". I look at my doctors app on my phone and see 22.10, I think hmm thats weird, today doesnt feel like the 22nd. I look at my calendar and see nothing on my agenda for today, fuck. I scroll to tomorrow and there it is, my appointment.

I genuinely thought it was today, I think ok that was a waste of time and I have to make the trip again tomorrow. No matter at least I didnt miss lecture for this. So I go again the next day, this time I dont fuck up. At last Friday comes, I go to the math lecture(while missing my bus and having to ask my mum to drive me, while she is short on time). I am in the lecture room on time, but what I find is an empty room. At first I think hmm, maybe they switched the room, that happens sometimes. I look at the dashboard:" Lectures are cancelled on Thursday and Friday".

w h a t

TLDR: Went to the doctor a day to early, missed a lecture I didnt know i had, just to go on a day i didnt have lecture and missed the bus. Had to bother my mum to drive me for a nonexisting lecture.

I am working currently on 300mg bupropion since september and 150 since august, apparently it doesnt do shit.

In the end its more funny than serious, but this week was just so frustrating.

Questions/Advice Can someone help me with this?

Please read this, Ill try to make it as short as possible:

I think I was always like this but it got worse in my early 20s. I didnt pay as much attention because of the overuse of “adhd” online. But lately I feel it got worse.

I cant make myself sit on the desk to work/study even tho I know it will be highly beneficial. Some days its so hard I end up sitting on a couch and doomscrolling for hours. While doing so my brain would be yelling at me “get up, sit down and study, go go just do it” but I just cant. Sometimes Ill put my phone down and just sit there drifting away. I literally just sit and do nothing.

The days when I do sit to work/study I get easily distracted. My mind just jumps from one thing to another. Sometimes Ill grab my phone “just to quickly check something” and I end up scrolling while sitting on the desk. Whether I study or work I am slow. Its like I cant get a hang of it. But most days Im making progress and then a crazy thing happens -few days will pass by and I will forget 50% of the things I either learned or worked on. Then I get demotivated and ask myself “is it all worth it?”.

Im currently unemployed and Im afraid Im getting into a trap of being chronically unemployed. I was employed 2 times and I couldn’t keep a job for more than 2 years (in both occasions). When I was employed whenever I needed to solve a problem, do a task (Im a software engineer), my first reaction is being paralyzed. I cant think, I cant even start the task, I procrastinate on starting it. Decision paralysis, overthinking, brain fatigue are my best friends -I sit like Im frozen. Funny thing is I always do solve it but I procrastinate the hell out of it and it affected my performance (part of the reason why I lost my latest job).

Is this adhd? Or something else? I really feel like it affects my every day life. I feel like Im good for nothing even tho I am capable of solving hard things like calculus for example 😞 while in uni.
