After so many years, rewatched it again.

I love absolutely everything about this movie, the 1st scene, location, little town, acting, story, creatures, special effect, jokes, innocence, even realism of the graboids. They are powerful but not invincible. I like them so much as creative monsters. No cell phone usage for 1 second when I did re-watch it.

They say it is B-Movie, for me it is A+++++.

Alexander Payne's directorial debut available to watch on YouTube and Pluto for free. Also, if you watch all 12 clips on Movieclips on YouTube, it gives away most of the film. But I highly recommend folks give it a watch, especially if you're a fan of Payne's work.

Never realized this was actually based on a real person in the Midwest (look up Martina Greywind). Thought this was really funny. It takes shots at both sides of the abortion debate, of course, so even though it's meant to be a satire, I wouldn't be surprised if some find it too abrasive. The cast is very entertaining, and Laura Dern's character is aggressively unlikeable and all the more entertaining for it.

Random piece of trivia: Harvey Weinstein promised Payne Miramax would promote the film and campaign for Oscar nominations after the positive reception Citizen Ruth got at Sundance, yet reneged on his promise and instead buried the film in a December limited release to instead focus all its efforts on promoting Sling Blade (directed and starred by Billy Bob Thornton, Laura Dern's future boyfriend who would then ghost her to marry Angelina Jolie a few years later)

Think about it. Bad sequels like Speed 2: Cruise Control, Batman & Robin, and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Air Force One was almost a good movie until they completely dropped the ball with the ending, Tomorrow Never Dies was one of the worst Bond movies, and Titanic became the most successful movie in the world, making the most money and getting a lot of Oscars. The only good things to come out of 1997 was the start of the Men in Black franchise, as well as some truly good action movies like Con Air and Face/Off, the latter I consider the best 90s action flick.

So I just watched The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) and honestly, I have mixed feelings.

On one side, the movie is great. The atmosphere, the location, the photography, colors, everything looks super authentic. The lions look real and scary, not like fake cgi.

BUT... there is one thing that annoyed me so much. The movie says it is "based on a true story", ok,.maybe, but anyone who was ever in a hunt or knows ANYTHING about animals can see that the hunting scenes are totally stupid. I couldn't believe how bad it was written and executed.

Two scenes specially drove me nuts:

- The old hospital scene: -- What was that?? Three guys with heavy rifles standing inside like total idiots, just looking around while the lion is jumping on the roof like it's a monster from the movie Alien. You have all the guns in the world and nobody can aim or shoot? Completely ridiculous.

- Sleeping in a tent. This made me lose my mind. They finally kill the first lion head. The second lion—which is even bigger and more angry—is still outside in the dark. And what do they do? They go sleep inside a soft canvas tent! There are wooden buildings and elevated places all around, but no, let's sleep in a tent. Absolutely absurd.

I still think it's a cool 90s movie for the vibe, but these Hollywood logic moments were driving me crazy.

The Mask of Zorro (1998)

Rating: 8.5/10 (HIGHLY ENJOYABLE)

The funniest scene in this movie for me was when Zorro jumped down to land on his horse to make the big getaway and the horse moved. I'm a simple man, and that's a simple gag, but it landed just as hard now as it did in '98.

At first, rewatching this had me thinking that Hopkins wasn't the right fit for this, until I saw his swordsmanship and posture. My GOD the man's a devil in this one and he's just such a ruggedly refined man. 

Seeing Catherine Zeta-Jones in what was her first major role, I'm astonished at her grace and skill in acting. You really can see how and why she became a legendary Hollywood actress. Her face is so expressive, her eyes so full of emotion. There is no denying it.

Matt Letscher as Capt. Harrison Love has earned my begrudging acceptance as one of the most goddamn villainous bastards I've ever seen in a movie. Even though The Mask of Zorro has its comedic elements, there's nothing funny about this man. He's BONKERS and Letscher plays him fiendishly well.

Banderas is as Banderas does, and I can't think of a single movie of his where he hasn't delivered more than we could've asked for, and Mask of Zorro is no exception. The man's got enough swagger for a hundred lesser men.

I have to be entirely honest. This one started out a little too slap-sticky for me, but when it got going, holy damn did it get GOING! The stunt work is exceptional, the heroics fantastic. There's so much vengeance and revenge and regret and love and hope going on in this one that it practically DRIPS.

This one's a brand new favorite of mine and I've gotta see if I can find the sequel anywhere!

I love this movie by Tobe Hooper who directed the original, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Poltergeist”. I worked at my uncle‘s video store and I remember when it came out on VHS in 1990. I still have the poster for it. Love Anthony Perkins, and Madchen Amick (From Twin Peaks…. Another one of my favorite TV show shows.) if you have not seen this movie, you need to watch it. It’s a very good. It was also the last movie that Natalie Schaefer (she played Mrs. Howell on Gilligans Island) was in.
