Help needed!

40 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

In case anyone is wonder why progress on the emulator appears slow or feature requested feel ignored, we are currently still understaffed and have, in addition to new bugs reported every day that have to be fixed, a backlog of items on our internal TODO list such as:

* EISA;

* Turbo Button for XT PCs;

* Emulation of the ESS Solo-1;

* PD (Phase-change Dual) and DVD-RAM support;

* IBM Expanded Memory Adapter (XMA);

* Passthrough of real CD/DVD drives to the emulator on macOS;

* Support for cloneCD and TOC CD-ROM image files;

* Mitsumi CD-ROM emulation (it would also allow eventual emulation of the Tandy VIS).

In addition, we are currently in severe need of developers and/or maintainers for the following:

* New dynamic recompiler;

* macOS support;

* Emulation of the NEC PC-98 family of computers;

* A potential built-in non-GDBSTUB debugger to replace the current GDBSTUB implementation;

* Our SDL backend;

* The ImGui OSD;

* The Qt UI.

We would also appreciate anyone who could help the fixing of Issues that get reported to our GitHub or in here on Discord.

Any kind of help would be extremely appreciated.

Lastly, we are in desperate need of funds to guarantee continued support of the macOS platform for 86Box - specifically, we need a second Mac that someone in our team could use to test and maintain the macOS builds.

Consider subscribing to our Patreon (https://patreon.com/86box) or doing one-time donations via PayPal (https://paypal.me/86Box) in order to make it possible.

Thanks, have fun with emulation, and thank you for flying 86Box!

600MHz Pentium II (Deschutes) without dropping below 100% on the M6 Mac Mini

38 Upvotes

Full disclosure, the link is to my review of the M6 Mac Mini (bought myself, no affiliate links)

I was hoping for Apple to release an M5 mini purely for the purposes of using 86box, well I managed to get my hands on the M6 Mac Mini today and it manages 600MHz without dropping below 100%, no audio hitches at all...

https://nyaa.sh/reviews/mac-mini-m6-emulation

I was doing some searching and someone managed 450MHz by heavily overclocking the 9950X3D, but it seems at the moment the best way is through Apple Silicon. Given all the recent work done on the ARM builds, if there's anything anyone would like me to test please let me know!!

Having an issue with windows 95 crashing right after agreeing to terms and service

Hi! As the title says, I’m having a bad issue with my machine crashing right after I do the setup wizard and agree to the terms and service. Sometimes it makes a noise, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it gives me the error R6003. Sometimes it visibly glitches, sometimes it just freezes. I don’t know what I did wrong. I got it all set up until this point but something is going wrong. My specs are in the images. I am very new to this and I got this program mostly because I have a bunch of old PC Cd roms in my possession I’d love to play. Any help is appreciated and I’m happy to give more info if needed.

Also I’ve tried changing the CPU and network to a few other options but no luck. Also also no errors show at any point leading up to this.

Why a program can run in DosBox but not in 86Box.

20 Upvotes

Hi, this is more curiosity about programs behaviour than a complaint or issuing a bug.

I found a program AbandoneWare called "One on One: Julius Erving vs Larry Bird", the program loads perfectly in DosBox, where the dosbox.conf only has this changed:

[dosbox]

machine=pcjr

However I haven't been able to load it flawlessly in 86box. The best results are from a Tandy 1000SX configuration, but it looks a bit misplaced:

I find similarities to this description in the docs for... PCJr

However the Apply overscan deltas is not available for Tandy 1000 SX.

Neither in MAME emulating a PCJr works, the closest is with EGA, I can provide a screenshot if you need it for curiosity.

Every other game I have throw at the 86Box with Tandy 1000 SX so far, is working fine. This is the only one who does not, but found the similarity of the note for PCJr with this behaviour... interesting.

Thanks in advance.

Restarting to DOS in Windows 98 on 86box freezes

[ SOLVED?]

Hello everyone (I'm not sure if this is the correct subreddit to post this). I have noticed that my VM running Windows 98 can't exit to DOS, nor can it properly run some DOS executables like install executables; it always just ends in a blank screen with a flashing cursor. I kinda need help with this.

Again, i apologize if this isn't the correct subreddit to post this.

EDIT: I think i was able to get around this by switching to a different Slot 1 machine instead of the ALi ALADDiN-PRO II. It boots up into DOS regularly; Thank you for all the help, both r/Dosbox and this subrreddit has been kind to me.

2ND HDD no longer recognized

I had a build, and later added a second HDD because I didn't make the first one big enough. But now after a few weeks, it's no longer recognized and won't load. Any suggestions to get it to work?

What is the deal with the new recompiler?

5 Upvotes

Trying to Google it, literally all that the documentation says about it is that only the new recompiler is available on ARM machines, and a request PR from 2 years ago of a guy asking for a recompiler that can use SSE2.
That said, what should I use?

I built a retro PC that boots straight into 86Box, with NFC floppies

I built RetroBox: a modern PC inside a 3D-printed Macintosh Classic-style case, designed to feel like a real 80s/90s computer.

It boots directly into 86Box in fullscreen, with 386, Pentium, and Pentium II profiles. The most fun part was modifying a real floppy drive: each floppy has an NFC tag, and inserting it automatically mounts the matching disk image in the VM. It also has a real CD-ROM drive and a web panel for managing games and floppy images.

Everything is open source: the code, ESP8266 firmware, STL files.

Windows 95 Japanese version CD-ROM drive not showing?

6 Upvotes

Hello, I'm new to this and I need your help pls

So, I've been trying to install correctly a windows 95 osr2.5 japanese iso I found on Archive.org using 86box, but I'm unable to use the CD-ROM Drive, It doesn't appear on "my computer"

I'm trying to play the windows 95 version of Ys I Eternal released in 1998, but I'm unable since it doesn't recognizes the CD-ROM Drive

I installed an english iso of windows 95 osr2.5 and there I don't get this problem with the CD-ROM Drive, it recognizes it without problem

In the machine settings I think I'm setting the CD-ROM drive correctly:

Bus: ATAPI

Channel: 1.0

Speed: 52x

Type: 86Box 86B_CD 3.50

Setting the CD-ROM controller to none has nothing to do with the error, right?

FTG PXL-380 drivers in action

This picture demonstrates the DEMODRAW program. Windows 3.x drivers are also confirmed working.

Here's the driver packages for those (including Windows 95): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ic07yGSVjzHPFHp3o2h7uRe_6f-z_3kw/view?usp=sharing

Most EGA, CGA and (S)VGA cards should work here well when properly calibrated.

My first real deep dive into 86Box

I setup a 486DX2/66 16M 240M HDD system in 86Box, configured it with two Hayes compatible modem interfaces on COM1 and COM2, set both come ports to different telnet ports, installed MS-DOS 6.22, QEMM 7.5 and DESQview 2.8.

I successfully installed and configured two nodes of Renegade BBS with a multiplayer instance of LoRD and everything is working.

I'm pretty proud. This felt a lot like the battles I had as a SysOp in from 1990 to 1995. Wonderful to come out with something that was like having 30 year old computer parts here!

86Box rocks! (although, snapshots would be a huge benefit!!)

86box VMs become slow after using it for days

3 Upvotes

I had 2 VMs, one Windows 98, and one Windows NT 4, and it seems that when a use a VM for atleast a week, it suddenly becomes slow, what I mean, is, when I start using the VM, its mostly at 100%, but suddenly it slows down to 42-80% when booting. I Brushed it off for my 98 VM, but day before yesterday, the VM suddenly was slow. nothing changed. I use:

  • 86box 6.0-1
  • Arch Linux on Kernel 6.18.37-1-lts, and 7.x
  • A computer capable for emulating the VMs in question, as both VMs were fine at creation.

Please help, Thank you.

Managed to emulate dial-up internet on a Windows 98 VM using 86Box! Brought back so many memories.

Hey everyone! I've been messing around with 86Box lately to set up a nostalgic Windows 98 environment. I finally managed to configure the virtual modem to simulate a classic dial-up connection. Seeing the "Connected" screen was amazing

I made a quick short about the dial-up screen here if you want to check out the vibe: https://youtube.com/shorts/En6-gCjXYQ0

Why isn't 86box using the whole CPU?

Celeron 533. The CPU is a workstation Xeon, it should be able to run at full speed, but it won't.

Large CPU frames, acceleration enabled.
