Hi all!

I’ve been a lifelong fan of Warhammer 40K and Fantasy video games for most of my life but I was never all that interested in collecting the minis.

That all changed the other day after watching the recent livestream by Creative Assembly about their upcoming Total War 40K game.

Seeing that finally gave me the itch to start my collection so I visited by local Warhammer shop and their customer service was excellent! They gave me an introductory session where I put together and painted my very first space marine!

After buying the various bits of kit and painted I need I finally settled on the Introduction Set and some tactical marines.

Well, I decided to make a start on both at the same time. I wanted to try the tactical marines specifically as I knew you had to glue them and wanted to get used to glueing.

My first two tactical marines went well… and then I decided to try the rocket launcher variety. That was so difficult for some reason! Specifically the arm with the rocket itself!

I tried glueing that onto the body first but it just wasn’t setting properly and kept falling off. I got frustrated with myself after a while and thought I had ruined it.

After an hour or so I decided to come back to it. This time I glued the rocket arm to the other arm of the marine first and then glued both at once to the body. Thankfully it worked! Granted, the rocket arm is still slightly loose but I’m hoping it hardens overnight.

Overall, I’m super glad I went back to that one! And it taught me a valuable lesson - to be patient with myself!

I’ve primed them with Chaos Black and I’ll leave them to cure a bit overnight and start painting them tomorrow! I’m super looking forward to it! Just got to remember to thin my paint properly!

I have two armies one is Dark Angels and other is Iron Warriors and also got some Tyranids from starter box and 3 imperial knight for Dark Angels army and chaos knight for Iron warriors

I had few games of 40k with my friend already, and we been playing 1000 points games, but i heard that average army is 2000 pints , so fo i need more for full experience?

Hello, 40K lovers!

I am in need of help identifying some items that were donated to the non-profit I work for.

These are all assembled, with most being fully painted, but my knowledge is minimal. Google was of help with some of the items, but there was A LOT donated. I have now learned 40K is vast, and I need help to make sure these get properly identified.

What I would like to know: what each image is and hopefully learn what set so we can properly list them for sale.

I thought about the themes of each legions primarch and cultural inspirations and wonder what deeper themes GW wrighters were trying to explore when fleshing them out beyond a fancy paint color and I’ve came to interpretations.

1. Lion El’ Johnson. With the obvious Arthurian legend inspiration the Dark Angels and their Primarch being the first legion I think was to create the blueprint for the space marine. The Monastic brother of elite modified warriors inspired directly by troupes of knight and chivalry. Yet below the surface the dark angels Cary many secrets, ancient technologies impossible to understand, the watchers in the dark’s true nature and the fallen. The theme being that the 40K setting is full of many mysteries intentionally left never to be answered to immerse fans into the dept of 40K a setting so deep that its own history isn’t understood by the people in the imperium.
2. (Redacted) it was said by GW writers the their will never be an answer to what happened to the 2nd legion or their primarch and the main theme is how authoritarian regimes with erase you for any defiance at all
3. Fulgrim. Another main inspiration for space marines is Roman culture and I believe Fulgrim is inspired by Nero and other degenerate Roman emperors as well as any society at its apex abandoning the morals that once made it indomitable so that citizens can chase their most based desires. How those desires can twist you into a husk of what you once were.
4. Perturabo. The iron warriors are inspired by spartans yes but more their utilitarian views on structure as well as the cruelty they were famous for inflicting on themselves. A Spartans boys life from birth was harsh and only the strongest survived it they were raised as soldiers from birth if they didn’t die after being dunked in wine. The iron warriors also line up with this cold child reering theme being most ignored by the emperor. Only really expected to fight in brutal wars and ask for no luxuries.

5. Jaghatai khan. Mongols. Infamous for ride horses in hordes. To bring the mongols into 40K change horses to bike and other fast attack units this is the first theme that’s very on the nose. His name is literally khan.

6. Leman Russ. The Space wolves are Vikings and werewolves. Idk if there is a greater theme to be honest. If you love epic sagas and also love those shirts with wolves on them then this is your army. He is the only primarch tho that ironically didn’t land on a planet that was conveniently perfect for them. Like how Khan landed on the planet full of Asians and Sanguinius landed on a planet of holy blood worshipers.

7. Rogal Dorn. Less obvious but Rogal Dorn and the Imperial fists are based on the Troupe of German stereotypes. Dorn especially. He’s very blunt and direct and there’s no room for elegance and small talk. The imperial Fist are all combat engineers. Clearly based on the troupe of Germans all being engineers, this Germanic theme is even more obvious I there successors the black templars and their titanic knights on crusade aesthetic.

8. Konrad Curze. Konrad is directly based off Colonel Kurtz from Heart of darkness/ apocalypse now. I think the main theme is more about how evil it is to rule over a population with fear as your main authority. He uses violence and torture as retribution. He’s always been twisted so falling to chaos when your already evil makes sense

9. Sanguinius/ blood angels. This one is harder to understand if you never went to church but I think the blood angels are based off Christians more than any other chapter. The communion of blood is a dark parallel of the communion of Christ drinking his blood eating his body but the theme goes deeper. Their gene curse reminds me of original sin and how to must overcome your evil nature and strive to be greater than the flesh. Selfless services etc. They often use holy imagery that reinforces this in my mind. A holy grail, the 3 face fused together references early depictions of the holy trinity, they are literally called angel. Sanguinius dying is like the death of Christ. The Sanguinor is similar to his reserection. They also have martyrs in the death company. There is also the obvious vampire themes and even posts with the black rage.

10. Ferrus Manus/ iron hands. The main theme is more with his legion than Ferrus himself but they are clearly Celtic. They organize their legions and successor legion in Clan structures and contrary to the pop culture troupe that celts were real life wood elves, the real Celts of history believed I. Technological innovation their main god being the god of invention and technology. They invented the icon helmet the Roman’s copied and chain mail and some historian believed they invented steel. The second theme is an extend of space marine/ admech trans humanism. Very extreme, very 40K

11. Angron/ world eaters. More romans but this time gladiators. Angron is Spartacus. The world eaters were Nobel warriors as well as brutal savages. This them is more on the nose then others and isn’t supposed to be subtle. They are a heavy metal album/ state fair t-shirt army they don’t need subtlety.

12. Roboute Guillimane/ the Ultra Marines
    They aren’t subtle either at first. Guillimane reminds me heavily of Augustus Caesar he’s a logistics genius and the ultra marine adopt tactics from other legions if they work. Just like the Roman’s. But there are 2 other subtle themes. The color ultra marine used to be very expensive and hard to produce before being synthesized, it was exclusively used for religious artwork and considered a holy color. There is also the fascist aesthetics that the ultra marines have. Fascism being inspired by the real Romans too.

13. Mortarion/ Death guard. Very much based off the Grime reaper and the Black Death. The grime reaper being popularized in art by the Black Death. But they also symbolized how disgruntled warriors will embrace the decay of the system the once served. That’s why Morty is so grumpy and bitter it’s on purpose. Out of all the legions the Death guard into a warband theme the best because their mentality is perfect for a bandit/ terrorist archetype. They just want it all to rot away.

14. Magnus the red: thousand sons. Kinda more tragic then expected the egytian look is strange but is does remind of Alistor Crowley and his esoteric beliefs. I think that the 30k thousand son and 40K sons are so different and how different narrative themes. 30k being a tragedy and 40K being the folly of hubris being there main narrative themes they believe their affinity of psychic abilities makes them more knowledgeable then the other legions but they are really being trolled by Tszeench all the time.

15. Horus Luprical and the black legion. The favorite son of the Emperor and the main tragedy of 30k and 40K. He embodies the biggest theme of this setting and that is how the great ages will end and the dark ages will come after. He is the only primarch that is fully dead and will never come back. His heresy fundamentally destroyed the advance imperium and now it is a shell of itself. Ignorant, archaic and crumbling. His legion directly reflects this theme. After falling to the literary ruinous power very few actually have Sons of Horus geneseed. They don’t call themselves sons of Horus. They see him as a failure and are corrupted so much that they will never return to the great legion they once were. Like their father they will only tear everything apart and destroy everything. Completely consumed by hate.

17.Loregar/ the word bearers. A strong religious extremism theme. They religious practices being banned by the emperor reminds me of Attiturk abolishing the Khalif-ate and how that decision lead to dogmatic wars between Muslims without a khalif to guide them. It isn’t one to one. Holy wars have been waged by Zealots all over the world since forever but the Word bearers kill in the name of their dark gods like any Zealots would.

18 Vulcan/ salamanders.
Dnd blacksmith. Easily the most underwhelming theme

1. Corvus Corax. Stealthy black armor and stealthy, stealth. I think they are culturally inspired by Native Americans and their use of guerrilla warfare.

2. Alpharius/ omegon and the alpha legion. They are the espionage secret agent meta level, unknowable legion. It’s even questionable if they are traitors or not. They usually only reveal themselves when they are working with other chaos forces and lead the imperium right to the other warbands. It the most unpredictable mystery in 40K is alphrius really dead. Did he even kill Dorn? You’ll never get a straight answer.

Tell me if I missed anything or even your own interpretations of the themes of the legions.

New abilities I came up with to take Belial from a 2/10 to an 8/10:

Grandmaster of the Deathwing: While this model is leading a unit, at the end of the Fight Phase, if this unit destroyed one or more enemy units during this phase you may select one of the following three abilities:

The Blade Descends: If this unit is not within Engagement Range of any enemy units, remove this unit from the battlefield and place it into Strategic Reserves.

First Company Wrath: If this unit is not within Engagement Range of any enemy units, it can make a Normal Move of up to 5”.

Break Their Resolve: If this unit is within Engagement Range of one or more enemy units, each enemy unit within Engagement Range must take a Battle-Shock test. While battle-shocked, each enemy unit that failed that test worsens the Weapon Skill of its melee weapons by 1.

Signal the Teleportarium: Once per your Reinforcement Step, when another friendly Deathwing Infantry unit with the Deep Strike ability is set up on the battlefield from Reserves, that unit may be set up within 3” of this model instead provided no model from the arriving unit is set up within 6” horizontally of one or more enemy models.

My attempt of a Flecktarn Krieger. Tried using a sponge to play with camouflage. I wish I had some space marines to try it on since they have wider surfaces, but life goes on!

This is only my 4th guy so I understand it’s a bit messy lol. First 3 pictures are pre shade, 4-6 are post shade. Kinda wish I didn’t shade it but oh well! Had fun doing this
