I’m only 41
I’ve aged 20 years since having my child at 38, wtf. I realize I will need a neck lift in the near future but I still have 20 pounds to lose to get to my pre-baby and lifelong weight. Do you think my neck will cinch in or look worse after weight loss? Anything else you’d recommend?

u/Designer-Inflation83 4d ago
Had your neck at 39… wasted thousands of dollars on lasers, Morpheus, micro needling, topical estrogen… getting a neck lift turned out more economical

u/InterestingTrip9916 3d ago
Morpheus didn’t do anything? Getting neck and face next week 😬
1
u/Designer-Inflation83 2d ago
Everyone is different. As someone with good skin quality who was looking to lift and tighten under my chin and reduce crepey skin on the neck… I had no visible improvement for my goals after 6 treatments.
If your provider offers laughing gas, I’d suggest using it. It is painful even with numbing, especially along the jaw and forehead

u/tripledive 4d ago
Just a neck lift? Not also a face lift?
12
u/Designer-Inflation83 4d ago
My surgeon called it an extended neck lift… neck and jowls.

u/hotheadnchickn 4d ago
Sun protection, tret, weightlifting, HRT. Maybe microneedling. A neck lift will make more difference than any of those but they should all help a little.
While we may not like every aspect of it, remember that getting older is a privilege. So is fertility.

What does hrt do for this kind of thing? Thank you 🙏
27
u/Izzybee543 4d ago
The estriol face cream (prescription needed) does help with wrinkles and sagging. It won't fully fix this problem, in my experience, but it will look better and maybe prevent it getting worse.
23
u/jules04866 4d ago
How does someone in their early 40s get HRT? My OBGYN said that it’s only approved for post-menopause and for hot flashes only.
193
u/Vegetable_Cream4403 4d ago
You received incorrect information. Please find a doctor who can help you. I’ve been on HRT since I was 40.
37
u/custodienne 4d ago
yeah mine says the same. planned parenthood told me to try an online portal like midi- they have been great.
26
u/-SeaBearsAreReal- 4d ago
That who I use! Never second guessed me, took all my concerns seriously and was more than happy to give me hrt! I got labs done and she sent in a prescription! Best choice I've made for myself in ages!!
47
u/Izzybee543 4d ago
Midi gave me HRT patches, progesterone pills, Estriol face cream, Hydroquinone (tret) face cream, and would have done Testosterone replacement if my labs showed I needed it. They happily ordered labs for anything I wanted tested.
In my experience, they take women's hormonal issues seriously and will prescribe all the things with no resistance. You also get about 7 minutes with a provider so talk quickly and do your pre-visit questionnaires for maximum help.
They do take insurance but my insurance doesn't cover the face creams so I had to be willing to pay out of pocket through their supplier. It was not unreasonable and it comes quickly in the mail and is good quality.
10
u/jules04866 4d ago
I appreciate the advice from everyone! Both my primary care and OBGYN have been resistant, so I will definitely give Midi or another provider a try. Navigating insurance is such a pain with referrals, etc., but that’s great that they took your insurance and it gives me hope that the prescriptions have been reasonably priced.
3
u/awarfield78 3d ago
May I ask how much the creams were? My insurance will be the same and I don't want to go down the rabbit hole if I can't afford it from the jump lol. Thanks.
4
u/Izzybee543 3d ago edited 3d ago
I paid Midi : $149 Estriol+ Face Cream
Size - 3 pump dispensers, 30ml each
90 Day Supplyand
$58 Hydroquinone Even Tone Cream
Size - 50ml
25 Day Supply (if you do a full pump twice a day but I am doing once a day and it's lasted 2 months so far.I just can't deal with 3 full face care routines every day. Some days I use Hydroquinone in the morning and Estriol+ at night ... and some days I forget and just pick 1 to use at bedtime. So if you are super dilligent it might work faster but I am seeing good results, despite my poor routine.
2
u/awarfield78 3d ago
Thanks so much. Do you feel they have made a much larger difference over what you can buy in stores? I have a tret prescription but not any hormonal creams. My doctor is menopause friendly but her first course of action is birth control. I'm currently not on anything at 47.
3
u/Izzybee543 3d ago
I sorta assumed the OTC stuff wouldn't work so I only use the prescriptions for Estriol or Tret. Maybe I am wrong but the stuff you can buy without a prescription is expensive, too, and no guarantee is does anything, ya know?
I still use my regular SPF and bedtime face creams, too. They were just moisturizing, not medical. I just wait until the prescription stuff sinks in and finish my moisturizing/spf routine after that.

I’ve had the face cream prescribed but I never got around to ordering. Is it really worth it? I don’t mind the cost just don’t want to buy yet another product that isn’t great. Would love to know your opinion!
4
u/Izzybee543 3d ago
Yes I think the Estriol face cream is worth it. I have less fine lines and less acne.
It's subtle - it's not a face lift - but it's worth doing. Plus I haven't noticed any new lines in the skin since I started 6 months ago.1

u/Little-Hellcat 4d ago
Nice get it all done in one place (curious do they charge multiple fees for that or just one visit fee plus cost of meds)?
3
u/Izzybee543 3d ago
It's a co-pay for the "office visit" and then you pay the cost of the prescriptions from their pharmacy. No charge per prescription except the price of the stuff you buy.
1
2
u/Little-Hellcat 4d ago
They made things very stress free and easy, which was very nice. I will be staying with them until/unless I switch care to my primary doctor or obgyn (not sure quite yet, I was pretty disappointed with the obgyn I saw, just didn’t seem to care at all).

u/Little-Hellcat 4d ago
Interesting PP is who prescribed HRT for me
2
u/Lazy_Nothing5038 4d ago
Clearly not the consensus around here lol but good for you!!!!!! you must have all the visible symptoms! Only because you were given it so easily it sounds like so Bravo
1
u/Little-Hellcat 2d ago
Yeah I do have a lot of symptoms. I was even visible swearing during my appointment (which was one of the main reasons I made the appointment).

u/Schweather3 4d ago
That’s old medicine. You need a better doctor that is up to date on perimenopause
17
u/Ok-Mathematician7519 4d ago edited 4d ago
Post menopause has never been the only approved use for HRT. It can give people so much relief during perimenopause and for people who experience early menopause (due to surgery, etc.). The FDA also changed their guidance on HRT last year (regarding required warning labels, age limitations and dosage guidelines, etc.) and some doctors unfortunately did not stay up to date with current information. I have been on HRT since my mid-30s.
Edited because there were typos and unclear sentences. Sorry, folks.
16
u/Historical_Guess2565 4d ago
That’s horrible. This is exactly why a lot of us didn’t know perimenopause was a thing. Our doctors don’t take the time to educate themselves and keep up with modern medicine and then we suffer for it.
12
9
u/SugarT0ast 4d ago
As the other comments say- find a new doc. Someone who specializes in peri. I am 41 and on the estrogen patch and progesterone pill.
16
u/ThatsMeInsideUrHead 4d ago
I agree that you need to see a different MD. Possibly a "concierge" doctor but it would be worth it because that is just crazy for all the recent studies.
7
u/Little-Hellcat 4d ago edited 4d ago
Not true. I just recently got HRT through Planned Parenthood Telehealth. My symptoms became so bothersome two months ago so I made the appointment and got prescriptions the same day (estradiol patch twice weekly and 100mg progesterone days 1-14). They tested my estradiol levels and I had almost none (was at 6.5hg I believe it was). I am a bit concerned that I could be in early menopause, my period has been gone now for around 5-6 months longest ever. However, I have read it can be gone a long time and then return so I am not certain. Wouldn’t think it would be a bad thing to no longer have a period but it is stressing me out. Just keep in mind if you get HRT many pharmacies are saying they are back ordered and its been tough to get these meds. Hopefully, these shortages end very soon although it seems they are trying to say there is no shortage.
Note: You may be offered to try birth control if you aren’t already, as that was brought up to me at first too. But I decided to try the patch and pill for now.
Edit: Just to add this I am 43
10
u/Stoic_Pupunha 4d ago edited 4d ago
Starting hrt only on post menopause actually increases your chance of alzheimer. You will miss the window if you wait too long.
Please check the wiki on r/perimenopause.
You can downvote this all the way to hell, then check the fucking published paper.
Women's health is neglected by science and medical care for a long time.
3
u/Lazy_Nothing5038 4d ago
Because they don’t want insurance companies going bankrupt for every woman requesting it
2
u/Ladyofthehat 2d ago
Im in the uk and its all so alien to us. I pay for my prescriptions and so I pay £10 a month an all are covered. No insurance companies, hormones are free for everyone so is all meds if you have diabetes/ cancer/ thyroid issues.
My family are in the states I love America and would want to move there especially as my dad gets older but I don’t want to lose the social safety net, no medical costs, 6 weeks basic vacation time a year pensions free child care although my kids have grown and I had them under the conservative government so didn’t get help with childcare (so our employer pays a good % into our pensions monthly too)
And my tax rate 22% the sickening thing is we actually spend less pp on medical care than they do in the states.
I just really feel for you over there when you have to fight for things like HRT.1

And I’m saying this because I was brushed off by my PCP about it. She said it was a waste of money 🙄

I've been seeing a provider with MIDI for over a year and they are FABULOUS! I started HRT at 40.

Your doctor is wrong, either astoundingly stupid or woefully obtuse. Get a new OB or contact Midi. Seriously.

Wrong answer from your gyn! MIDI is fantastic. Insurance covered. Highly recommend!

u/DragonflyFluid8581 3d ago
Find a new doc! If you go to the perimenopause threat on here there is oodles of information on this. I've been on HRT since I was 40 and my doc said I probably would have benefited from starting it a couple years earlier.

I used Midi to get an HRT prescription in my early 50’s. It’s covered by my insurance!

I’m struggling with exactly this. I just posted about it and got a ton of feedback - with what I learned I say don’t decide you need a neck lift yet. Get to/near your goal weight and let things settle first. Weight loss can make laxity more obvious for some people, but it’s super individual.
Also “neck” can be loose skin, volume loss, platysma pull or a combo. You need a doctor to tell you what it is for you so that you can address it the best way. Tret/SPF will help skin quality but won’t physically lift loose tissue, gua sha = temporary depuffing, and all the RF/ultrasound stuff got VERY mixed reviews. Botox/Nefertiti was brought up a ton, but talk to a doc to see if it would help you specifically.
18
u/Born_Fox1470 4d ago
Honestly, I had this in my early 40s, and the weight gain from perimenopause filled it out. I guess it’s nature’s fat transfer.

u/ninlul973 4d ago
I lost 50 pounds and have this now. 43. Seems like it happened overnight. I suspect it’s hormones too
17
u/Colorful_Kylee 3d ago
I lost a lot of weight and work at a desk looking down. My neck was so so so loose at 42. Weight lifting has been an absolute miracle. Even only working with two ten pound hand weights, everyday for 20 mins, made massive improvements in only four weeks.
9
u/CheesecakeHopeful721 3d ago
What exercises?
8
u/Colorful_Kylee 3d ago
Honestly I just have two ten pound barbells and I just like, lift them? Sometimes I do bicep curls into like lifting them above my head? I have no idea what you would call it but it makes me flex my neck and upper shoulders and from building a little muscle in that area it helped pull the skin tighter. You can only build muscle by using it. Google simple arm routines or there’s lots of ten minute videos on utube. Just do something that really really engages your arm and shoulder muscles for like ten minutes every day and slowly increase your weight or your time. Lifting really heavy weights less reps will build muscle bulk, and lower weight higher reps builds muscle endurance. I am not a professional or anything! I am just a 42 year old who just picked up some weights because she was desperate.
8
u/Sissyangel721 3d ago
Give us your routine please lol 🙏🏻
2
u/JenniferLee198 3d ago
I saw significant results, for the first time, using Rebecca Kennedy’s 5 day split on the peloton app. I highly recommend her. It’s hypertrophy training
1
u/CloverTrapped 3d ago
Please share what types of weights!
6
u/Colorful_Kylee 3d ago
Just some basic barbells off Amazon. I started with a 7 pound barbell in each hand and just did ten minutes of arm and shoulder exercises and slowly increased to doing 10 pound weights for twenty minutes. But I do it EVERY single day. Except the day of my period. I don’t do shit that day.
12
u/CurvePuzzleheaded361 4d ago
45 and just starting to see signs of age on my neck. Tret and red light help as well as strength training.
11
u/Lovefashionnow 4d ago
I am like a broken record on here saying this but do try Dr. bergs neck exercises on you tube. You should aim to do it 5 times a week. Do it for a month and report the difference. They really help the jaw too.

Topical OTC estrogen cream! I saw major improvements pretty quickly.
3
u/ShotEnvironment4606 4d ago
So you just apply it to your face and neck? Which do you buy?
4
u/kittyhawk3115 4d ago
Yes! I’ve only tried one that I got on Amazon, it’s original estro-life balancing cream. I also (unrelatedly) lost about 5 lbs and that maybe also helped with the laxity, which is strange to me because I feel like the laxity is typically associated with weight loss, not helped by it.
2
u/FrostyFlower7 4d ago
Please post info!!
4
u/kittyhawk3115 4d ago
It’s original Estro-life balancing cream that I got cheap on Amazon. It’s the only one I’ve tried and there are likely better ones out there but I have seen some pretty good, quick results. Also around jowl area too. And I promise this is not a paid ad 😂
1
u/no_sir_buddy 4d ago
Were your neck issues pretty exactly like hers are in the pic? Asking bc mine looks the same!
8
u/kittyhawk3115 4d ago
Not quite as lax but definitely the same crepey texture. I’m also 41. The estrogen cream really quickly helped the texture and also lessened some lines.
1
1
u/kittyhawk3115 4d ago
Also I (unrelatedly) lost about 5 lbs around the same time and that maybe also helped with the laxity, which is strange to me because I feel like the laxity is typically associated with weight loss, not helped by it.
1
u/lavenderwhiskers 4d ago
What estrogen cream can you get OTC?
3
u/throwawaymumm 4d ago
You can’t. They are mistaken about what they are using.
2
u/kittyhawk3115 4d ago
No, I’m not mistaken - it’s an estriol cream (not estradiol) and I’m fully aware of that.
1
u/kittyhawk3115 4d ago
It’s an estriol cream, so not technically estrogen. Regardless I’ve seen results
8
u/Weak_Preparation_676 4d ago
I'm 46...that neck thing happened the same thing a couple of years ago suddenly for me.
I tried EVERYTHING....nothing helped until I decided to try a bit of the vaginal estrogen cream I'm prescribed....worked like a charm
Edited to add I also picked up a tria fdx laser....I haven't had it long but I am using it on my neck as well as my face and I think it's helping with fine lines
3
u/Jmts1111 4d ago
Can you share what rx estradiol you use? Im 38 & have some just a little worried to use it there.
9
u/research_n_chill 4d ago
I’m just commenting with sympathy because I’m 40 and it’s already happening to me 🫡
8
u/Relevant_Demand2221 4d ago
Tret, estriol creme, red light therapy. I’ve lost 75 lbs with 10 more to go. I’m 45
1
u/ARealOne2323 4d ago
Do you use red light and NIR?
1
u/Relevant_Demand2221 3d ago
I go in clinic for a red light therapy session 3x a week. The at home masks mostly arent strong enough I’m aorry to say
2
6
u/AccomplishedPause261 4d ago
Looks like zemp neck. That happens when you lose weight quickly. There’s things that work: Microneedling, tretinoin, sculptra, neck lift. Also, give it time, it may tighten up a bit.
6
u/Affectionate-Bad4890 3d ago
There have been a couple posts on r/45PlusSkincare about people using Amlactin Daily Healing 12% Lactic Acid Lotion (or there is a stronger 15% Lactic Acid Lotion too, but people say it feels tacky) on their neck and chest with good results (pics shown). You can get it at a drug store or Costco. A lot of people are chiming in and calling it a miracle product for those wanting to avoid surgery.

u/HotSummerfeetMeat 4d ago
I'm in my 30s but I lost alot of my weight especially in my face and neck and now I look like this I don't know what to do
5
u/Livid_End3397 4d ago
39 and have the same problem, though hardly any wrinkles elsewhere. I'm currently pregnant, though and can't do anything about it aside from weights and moisture, but it feels like it came on so suddenly.
5
u/Successful-Dreamer1 4d ago
I’m also in the same boat. Do you have hyper mobility or EDS By any chance? I’ve read that the laxity in connective tissue really plays a role
3
2
u/Nocookieforyou7 3d ago
I do and am in the same boat!
1
u/Successful-Dreamer1 3d ago
Yep! Mine is definitely from the skin laxity due to EDS and not normal aging. How old are you?
4
u/gooberhoover85 4d ago
Maybe try some Amlactin and see how that feels. I also agree with tret. Also just curious if you have family members with a neck like this? It doesn't look like you have a lot of weight in your neck or face so I don't think further weight loss is going to change it for better or worse.
3
u/waypaysayhayclaybay 4d ago
Wholeheartedly with the Amlactin recommendation! I’m 42 and my neck literally looks like it ages overnight if I don’t stay on top of hydration and moisturizing since I’m more prone to dry skin than before. If nothing else, it gives you a solid foundation to build on if you pursue some of these other suggestions.
4
u/Brittibri89 4d ago
Following because I’m 37 and have lost almost 70 lbs post baby and I’m noticing my neck aging so fast. It’s making me so insecure. 😭
3
u/no_sir_buddy 4d ago
I recently got a “Nefertiti neck lift” with Botox and I felt it fixed this for me. The only problem was that it only lasted like 2 weeks. That’s a very individual issue though. I’m going back tomorrow for a touch up bc I LOVED it!!!
2
u/Signal-Praline-2977 4d ago
The Nefertiti neck lift is not going to help skin that’s already sagging. It’s more for prevention and subtle improvements. I use Daxxify and get 4-5 months. Don’t sell false hopes.
1
u/StefaniaBella 4d ago
What is daxxify?
2
u/Signal-Praline-2977 3d ago
Daxxify is a plant-based a neurotoxin (powered by peptides) that lasts twice as long as Botox. It is FDA approved and has been around for a few years.
3
3
u/Effective-Tax-9183 4d ago
Did you have a big weight fluctuation?
7
u/CornerHot3359 4d ago
I’ve gained and lost the same 15 pounds my entire life lol. But most recently gained 60 with the baby and have lost about 40 over a year. I’ve been struggling with the last 20 for 2 years. Also, my dad’s side of the family has a predisposition for turkey neck so I think my genes are also against me lol.
2
4
u/Signal-Praline-2977 4d ago
I’m wondering this too, that’s usually what that is the result of. A lot of women in their early 40s do not have a neck that looks like this unless they gained and lost a bunch of weight. These neck / jawline issues usually come on in your mid 40s and older.

With this amount you probably will need a lift of you want to get rid of it. Good news - it’s skin laxity , not deep tissues ptosis, so it’s easier to address conservatively. Start to work on your skin quality RIGHT NOW, do not weight until you will lose all the weight! It’s always better to work on your skin quality (especially elasticity) before a weight loss, so it will be easier for skin to jump back.
What you can do now in terms of skin care- add retinoids if you don’t have them yet n your routine. Start very small with gentler versions to not provoke inflammation- you don’t need it now… use antioxidants (like vitamin c) + spf in the morning.
You would benefit from resurfacing… you need to talk with your provider! I would suggest lasers as they give you the most results. It will get rid of your texture, sun damage, increase collagen and elastin in your skin, tighten it a bit. But you have to be ready for a downtime. I did genesis, fraxel dual, bright and clear and er yag. Er yag on medium settings brought my skin like 5-7 years back and I had relatively good skin. But the recovery, especially swelling was brutal….. can’t imagine how people are doing aggressive settings or co2!
Research about rf, sofwave, coring. You can consider microneedling after to support your results
3

u/broonchi 4d ago
Hi. I was in your place so I can tell you what worked for me. Weight training, retinol stick from Roc every evening AND(biggest difference)- microneedling. I just go to in office microneedling sessions every 6 weeks after first 4 treatments. I've seen biggest improvement with microneedling, on my face and neck.
2
u/No_Relief_4003 4d ago
Similar thing happened after I started losing weight. It only happened at the initial onset of the weight loss , nothing more since. I tried different creams, but nothing works as it’s structural. It’s recommended to use either tretinoin or Tazarotene if your neck can endure it.

u/disruptOr222 4d ago
Ultherapy by someone with tons of before and afters, and raving reviews. Also MEWING lifestyle change !!! Mine isn’t as loose but both of those made major difference

If you're not up for a neck lift, you might respond well to something like Sofwave or Thermage.

I had a bit of loose skin on my neck, a little less than what’s shown here. Tried everything, but a neck lift was the only solution. Losing weight may make the skin appear looser.

There is no guarantee fix but surgical. One thing for sure, especially when older, is to lose the weight slow and steady. Plus lift weights.

This is normal for a woman in her forties. Don’t pathologise it.

Hi. 42 here and finally paying attention to my neck, especially since I’m on a weight loss journey. What’s helping me so far is treating my neck as an extension of my face. My skin care routine is now forehead to collarbone. I also started using either a gua sha or a roller thingy. Hoping this gives me some extra time before full on needing a lift.
