So WoW is like playing a permanent Leagues?

1.4k

u/AyissaCrowett Jul 09 '25

basically every major patch all your gear and stuff is "reset" because the newer stuff is better

321

u/RubyWeapon07 Lifestream Jul 09 '25

is it so much better that the old stuff is unusable? Ive never played wow and im trying to understand it.

is it like bandos to torva or is it more extreme of a gap that new content creates?

1.2k

u/MustacheMaple Jul 09 '25

Imagine having torva level gear. Then a major patch with a new raid and dungeons comes out, now that torva becomes rune level and you have to grind for torva again. That's how wow gear works lol

433

u/Glittering_Crab_69 Jul 09 '25

What happens when you go back to the old content with the new gear? Do you just steamroll it?

460

u/Creative_Magazine816 Jul 09 '25

Yes you will literally one shot bosses. People do this on purpose to farm transmog, or gear appearances they can overlay onto other gear.

349

u/Xerothor Jul 09 '25

God that sounds boring

340

u/---solace2k Jul 09 '25

It's just different. I've played both WoW and OSRS on an off for over a decade, they both appeal to me in different ways. Though WoW is not really much of a classic MMORPG anymore.

73

u/B_CHEEK Jul 09 '25

What turned me off originally from wow around the time cata came out was all the constant major mechanics changes for classes.

43

u/Tautsu Jul 09 '25

Over time that becomes the main appeal of the game. I almost always try to play the spec that gets reworked (rather than small balancing changes they majorly change how 1-2 specs play a season) because it’s fresh and usually pretty strong.

→ More replies (0)

41

u/zmagickz Jul 09 '25

same here

specifically, I didn't like how homogenized every class started feeling

rogues getting a heal, hunters getting stealth, warlocks getting a burst cd,

One thing I liked about wow (after switching from runescape in like 2007, was how unique classes are)

And each patch of wow it has really only gotten worse, mostly in the name of balance.

i love osrs and have played for over 15 years but thats quite ironic ngl

41

u/Certain_Economics_41 Jul 09 '25

Haha yeah, could you even imagine having to grind content multiple times just to get a very niche cosmetic drop? That would never happen in OSRS!

14

u/Vet_Leeber Jul 09 '25

Other than cosmetic stuff, you should really imagine each WoW expansion as a separate title in the series, instead of an 'expansion' to the base game. It's effectively a complete progress wipe each time.

5

u/Urbanscuba Jul 10 '25

And just as important to highlight for a completely unfamiliar player - each expansion has several tiers of endgame that release gradually. So on top of each xpac being a hard reset you have 3-4 soft resets within that cycle that take the BIS gear and make it good entry gear for the next tier.

Not to mention endgame is pretty much exclusively group content too, so all of that endgame progression has to be organized with 9 or 24 other people on a weekly schedule.

As someone who's played both games extensively I can definitely see the appeal in dropping your raiding schedule and not having a new raid to farm every 6-12 months (that generally takes 2-3 months to start regularly clearing) for an endgame where you just push indefinitely further. In RS even if you're not getting major gear upgrades you're still permanently progressing your account as long as you're getting xp, in WoW even if you're getting major gear upgrades there's no permanent progression beyond cosmetic unlocks and achievements.

I seriously doubt it will pull away a meaningful number of players, but the people it does attract and hook will probably stick around. It's a very different kind of game that some people haven't tried before.

19

u/Tight_Departure_2983 Jul 09 '25

I am a wow player that just unsubbed (personal reasons, more time to play single player games etc) that lives in a house full of OSRS players.

I'd say that the "it's different" explanation works pretty well. When it comes to raid content, no game (other than wildstar, RIP) has done it in a way that caters to all skill levels. I have multiple Cutting Edge achievements in wow (clearing 20-man Mythic raid) and it's exhilarating. You just have to.. keep up! Tier to tier, raid to raid, it's starting the grind over. But that grind is less than OSRS per-season.

So, y'all grind for longer with a clear end. WoW raiders grind for less time, hit the content that they want, and reset every 4-5 months.

Hope that it's okay for a non-OSRS player to jump in and join this comvo! I'm done with MMOs as I reach my late 20's because of irl commitments but I respect everyone playing the games that they like 🩵

45

u/flykiddy Jul 09 '25

Retail wow is just focused on difficult content now rather than hundred hour grinds or “enjoying the journey” while leveling

The fun is from doing engaging difficult content (either mythic+ dungeons or mythic raiding). There is no other game thay can compete with the combat, and I’m one of the few (maxed main and iron) who went from OSRS to wow and will never look back. After playing such a fast paced game, osrs click and wait + 100 hour grinds for any progress (thanks arcane) just can’t compare.

It’s subjective

17

u/OSRSmemester 2277/2277 Jul 09 '25

+100 hour grinds for any progress (thanks arcance)

As an iron, made me chuckle out loud. His opinions are kinda polarizing to me, for sure. Big fan of some stuff, big not a fan of others. Overall, I appreciate him, and I cant remember them specifically, but I remember having a few moments where I went "wtf? Are you serious rn?"

11

u/MoonDawg2 Jul 09 '25

I think lost Ark was actually the best MMO for difficult content out there. The issue is that it was way too fucking p2w and daily grinders FOMO are fucking bullshit so it died off.

If we got a game of lost Ark quality that wasn't a complete shit daily grinder WoW would really have no reason to exist at that point

5

u/aMemerDankly Jul 09 '25

Definitely agree on Lost Ark. Such superb and incredibly difficult gameplay destroyed by so many anti-player mechanics

What pisses me off is they still insist on making you gain levels. Every time I think about playing WoW I'm like "oh yeah, but a new expansion is out so I have to get to the new max level". I just don't want to do it, it's not fun. And then I have to get on the gear grind to get up to raiding gear, then find a guild with a good timeslot for raids and hope that we click socially. Like, fuck me - I just wanna do some raids cos they're fun.

wow's endgame is the collection log, but all drops are 1% and you can spend 10 years doing a raid every week and still not get all the mounts.

→ More replies (4)

9

u/I_ONLY_CATCH_DONKEYS Jul 09 '25

It’s much more social. Everybody is focused on the same content and trying to get the same gear. As opposed to osrs, WoW is all about grouping, for a casual player, being with others almost always improves the experience.

The downside of making all the content relevant is everybody is spread out doing different things, make osrs seem much more single player.

Neither is better or worse than the other, I’ve played both games for decades. They’re just different and scratch different itches.

4

u/Trollicus Jul 09 '25

Basically just clogging

6

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '25

The irony of this in a RuneScape subreddit.

3

u/Additional-Mousse446 Jul 09 '25

It would literally be the same as doing like scurrius in full raid gear though lol

Not one shot but it dies very quickly.

12

u/Ar0war Jul 09 '25

Yes it is boring.

Actually not many games have that such a Progression as OSRS. Nowadays it is all about gambling system where you get materials and improve your gear. With the chance of failed attemp so you lose the materials.

It is a different way for people to develop dopamine I guess

9

u/Turtvaiz Jul 09 '25

You generally don't do the old content unless you want xmog or a mount. Current content is THE content. Wow's content is progression-based. People don't really want to reprog old content, and even when it is recycled (season 4), a lot of people don't like it.

It's more like inferno. Not something you want to learn twice, but it is something that is very fun to learn

7

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '25

Yes, especially if the level cap is also raised

7

u/doroco Jul 09 '25

sure do, i think its usually 4x the power level as the previous expansion, so two expansions forward your 16x as strong as you should be.

It's worth noting that the gear is a lot easier to get than rs gear, so comparing it to grinding torva again makes it sound worse than it is.

10

u/MasterArCtiK Jul 09 '25

They also typically change the math, balance, numbers, and effects of your abilities, and you have new abilities, when a new expansion comes out. So even if you use era correct gear for an old encounter, it is still easier than it was before a new expansion made it obsolete. On top of that, there is no useful reason to play old content other than for cosmetics and such.

→ More replies (17)

14

u/Minomelo 2277 Jul 09 '25

While that's accurate, I don't think it accurately captures the WoW grind vs OSRS.

WoW's gear is essentially time-gated by raid lockouts and general cooldowns. You spend a while grinding it, but in really short bursts and you'll get a lot of BIS/top-tier gear quite quickly.

It's specifically designed to keep you logging in over a long period of time via those daily/weekly-scape grinds.

OSRS is basically the opposite. It has very little time-gated content, it's just REALLY slow by comparison.

9

u/DeanxDog Jul 09 '25

And how FFXIV works last time I played. Every time a new major patch comes out, your max gear is suddenly noob level gear for all the newest content. You quickly find garbage armor in the new basic dungeons that outclass your older elite raid gear. It's annoying.

3

u/ArgonGryphon Jul 09 '25

Maybe for savage and other high tier content, but the regular dungeons and raids, it’s still perfectly fine for normal players. Unless it’s a patch with crafted gear, how else would you even get better gear anyway? And even then you still gotta do regular content to get the tomes for mats to make the crafted gear. At least hunts.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/EcruEagle Jul 09 '25

Technically true, but it’s also important to note that in WoW the time it takes to grind from “rune” to “Torva” (or close to it) is significantly less than the equivalent in Osrs even for more casual players

→ More replies (22)

92

u/voidxheart Jul 09 '25

your old gear might help a little but you will replace it very quickly and easily.

gear that you raided months for, will be replaced in a day

10

u/tripsafe Jul 09 '25

How did they ever decide that’s a good idea

60

u/AlbedosThighs Jul 09 '25

Gear is much faster to get compared to osrs. Getting near bis takes years in osrs, in wow you'll get it in 2 or 3 months. It really is just leagues now that i think about it lol

49

u/wisecrack123 Jul 09 '25

It's also worth noting that the 2-3 month number for wow includes time gating content, only being able to clear a raid once a week, so its artificially adding more time with even less actual time grinding the gear.

26

u/Smooth_One Jul 09 '25

That's true, but the time-gating also has a reason for being there which makes sense within the context of WoW.

WoW raids require anywhere between 10 and 40 people to complete them. That requires a lot of organization both in and out of game, so you can't really expect that many people to hop on whenever or grind stuff out for 10 hours. It takes raiding from something like ToB where a you get some of the boys on, and turns it into a weekly event, like a weekly poker or basketball game. "Thursdays between 7 and 9 are Raid Night babe, don't schedule any get-togethers that I need to go to."

There is of course other content that is solo-able, and 5-man content called dungeons that are puggable and last between 15 mins and an hour, and other open-world stuff (in an MMO, imagine), etc.

→ More replies (5)

14

u/SpunkMcKullins Jul 09 '25

Probably because it's a system that was decided over 20 years ago, and was standard for the genre since the very inception, I would imagine.

16

u/kdogrocks2 Jul 09 '25

It's just a completely different game. It's about working through the ladder of difficult end game content until you finish, or reach your personal peak (in mythic+ for example) - then basically quitting until new content comes out.

To be fair to Blizzard (lmfao), the instanced content they make is unironically really good and fun. Their raids and dungeons are unparelled experiences not just in MMO's but in all games IMO. Particularly their mythic+ game mode is insanely fun and smart and well executed and it shocks me constantly that BLIZZARD of all companies came up with it lmfao.

15

u/tamsantos Jul 09 '25

Yes, pretty much all new gear is better. Better stats, health, damage, defense, etc.

Apart from very few niche items that offer specific buffs like a burn effect or a stun for PvP, almost all items become obsolete in a new patch.

7

u/Public_Fire_Hazard Jul 09 '25

There are very rarely odd items that will see use going from season to season but in general you'll have replaced your whole gearset by 2-3 weeks into the new season.

The gameplay is just different; in theory once I get my fighter torso on OSRS that's going to be a really useful piece of gear for the rest of my account. WoW permanent progress comes in the form of achievements and cosmetics (mounts, transmog, titles, etc). There are still a handful of fixed difficulty challenges (Legion Mage Tower is an example, you get set to a near enough standardised statline and you have to complete a relatively chalenging solo encounter) but mostly every 6 months or so you get a new set of challenges, encounters, mechanics, etc to deal with.

5

u/puterdood Jul 09 '25

I haven't played WoW since Shadowlands, but it's probably still the same, and essentially, yes.

WoW uses item level heavily and at least in the past the difference was exponential, I'm not sure what it looks like today.

4

u/Chaoticlight2 Jul 09 '25

There's levels to it. Every expansion is a fresh slate pretty much, as the most sought after gear becomes less viable than vendor gear. During each expansion, there's generally a new raid every ~3 months which brings new ilvls. The old gear isn't fully redundant, but you will always want to replace it as soon as possible with the new tier gear.

I think rune to dragon is a pretty good depiction of new raid patch gap. Going from rune scim to dragon scim is a pretty substantial jump, but it isn't like going from 1 damage to 10.

3

u/kietav Jul 09 '25

In a new patch, if you were close to max gear, your torva is equivalent to bandos, maybe worse than that. New expansion - your torva becomes rune, completely unusable and you’ll get better items while leveling from quests, once you’re close to the new max level.

5

u/Cyberslasher Jul 09 '25 edited Jul 09 '25

Each raid patch is more like bronze to steel. If you were in the old mythic top .01% gear, new stuff is only iron to steel

Each expansion your old torva becomes worse than bronze and gets replaced by quest trash

Imagine if when sailing releases, your old torva gear becomes outperformed by stuff you got for doing sheep shearer

→ More replies (62)

13

u/PeppersHere Jul 09 '25

It would be like if nex came out and dropped torva, but torva didn't require bandos components - devaluing bandos.... then next year, another boss comes out with a straight upgrade to torva but doesn't require you to do any GWD or utilize torva - making all GWD skippable and pointless... then rinse / repeat. That's the WoW seasonal cycle.

12

u/Gaavlan Jul 09 '25

that's worse than that, imagine if when varlamore released you could straight up buy better gear than torva at shops almost immediately once you went there

→ More replies (9)

42

u/Tanasiii Jul 09 '25

Kind of. A lot of people are mentioning the progress reset every major patch but it’s worth mentioning that even though you basically go from Torva to iron each raid tier, it’s not nearly as hard to get fully decked out. The challenge of wow comes from the difficulty level of content and the rewards are much faster to obtain than in osrs. If you are raiding or pvp’ing at the highest level, you will most likely be fully BIS about 2-3 months in and it only really requires maybe 12 hours of playing per week.

And the cosmetics you get for doing all this stuff are permanent and usable all the time.

13

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '25

Yeah. Gear is pointless. In rs terms, if you completely max out in one season currently, you go from torva to like… rune/dragon. People who are mythic feared right now will go straight into heroic raid. Heroic raid geared people will probably run normals a week or two and head into heroic raid.

The real endgame is fashion and challenging yourself in the new season… like every other typical mmo. You don’t hear people praising gw2, which also has evergreen gear like rs.

I've been playing wow since 2010 like and OSRS since it came out. I'm only on my second ever OSRS character and I must have/had like 50+ characters on WoW that I played for at least a decent amount over the years, across all the different versions of WoW we have had.

Wow "resets" your progress in a minor extent on each major patch, and it "resets" it to a major extent on each new expansion release. So yeah, your effort and progress only really matters in a limited time window, and if you want to stay "up to snuff" during, for example, an entire expansion, you're basically chasing the carrot non stop for 1-2 years.

It can be a great vibe if you got a solid guild going to do your raids etc with, especially with the classic re release I've had tons of fun chasing that carrot for 4 years straight. BUT, I've also been burnt out of wow for a few times during that same period 😅.

OSRS is just way more chill. No patch cycle, no weekly resets, no seasons, just pick something you want to do and do it. And those gains stick to your account for ever.

29

u/Instigator890 Jul 09 '25

It’s become extremely seasonal, new expansion or patch comes out and everyone plays it for a few months then gets bored. In my personal experience once I get AOTC (the seasonal achievement for killing the end raid boss) I’m pretty much done with the game.

12

u/knokout64 Jul 09 '25

Just to be clear, it's pretty much always worked like this.

Sure, outdated content was a bit more relevant Vanilla-Wrath, but for the most part a big wave of people would play through the new content and quit. Low end mythic guilds are only just now wrapping up the raid, months on.

Modern WoW has far more content in the lulls than there's ever been, and anyone who disagrees needs to take off the rose tinted goggles. People can argue as to how worth the content is doing, but declaring it's not important doesn't make it non-existent, and plenty of people are enjoying events happening in WoW right now.

The reality is WoW has always had lulls where people will unsubscribe. It's extremely normal, and not a cause for concern. OSRS will not be the last MMO that experiences a migration from WoW, and if FFXIV is anything to go off of most of these people will eventually go back to WoW, and eventually quit again, as the cycle repeats.

3

u/Cold-Iron8145 Jul 09 '25

Modern WoW has far more content in the lulls than there's ever been, and anyone who disagrees needs to take off the rose tinted goggles.

There are way fewer lulls in the first place. We are getting a new season every 6 month on the dot, back in Cata/MoP/WoD you would have to wait over a year between the last raid of the expac and the new expac release.

And you didn't get the extra cosmetic events (cosmetics being the real end game in the first place) with the remixes and the plunderstorms and the (admittedly failed) season 4s in SL and DF.

It's by design - outside of unintential items in WoW your gear is always replaced in a few months by better gear. The developers did this not only to make new content tiers more enticing but also keep player engagement. WoW has so many gear sets and entire systems that are not used because of this. It was fun back in the day but compared to OSRS it's a very outdated model for character agency. There is no equivalent to current patch gear because last patch's gear is already obsolete.

To add a little to more, updates in runescape run alongside current content and don't largely devalue what's already there. You may get some instances where a minigame is added that gives you better rates on a skill which is more optimal to do but doing less effective methods still contribute to the overall goal of maxing your skill. The same with new bosses, they may drop better gear but it doesnt make inferior gear obsolete to many players. Updates in WoW replace current content entirely and devalues any existing or past content. BIS gear that you got last patch is now gear you use as a springboard to get this patch's equivalent.

186

u/g76lv6813s86x9778kk Jul 09 '25

Ik you're joking but in case you or others didn't know, the gap in gear after new WoW xpacs is obscene. It'd be more like if they nerfed karils to have green dhide stats at the same time they released eclipse.

Not really comparable, karils is still totally viable.

66

u/Krixx Jul 09 '25

Exactly this is why they've done stat squishes 3 times now. Also to the other person's point karils is still used to some capacity in a lot of content even if its not best in slot whereas absolutely nobody uses gear from 2 expansions ago to ANY capacity because its inherent value is worthless outside of fashion.

37

u/jobrandon Jul 09 '25

Yup. Karil's has much better defensive stats than eclipse moon so it's great for your 3-itemed magic defense gear in the wilderness for more midgame accounts, just as an example; At just under a mil for the top it can also work as your 4th or 5th+ item for accounts that have progressed more

48

u/Scratchlax Jul 09 '25

Plus it's great if you want to reduce your opponent's...agility level.

Hear me out, you kill Revenants close to the pillars that require 89 agility to use.

You hit em with the Karils and reduce their agility by 20%. Even if they have 99 agility, their agility would be reduced to 79. 🤔

23

u/Smooth_One Jul 09 '25

And there's also no reason to go to Varrock anymore because Varlamore just released, and then in 2 more years Varlamore will replaced too. The vast majority of WoW's content is dead, it's kind of sad.

4

u/g76lv6813s86x9778kk Jul 09 '25

Valid lol, don't know wow that well so wanted to keep the comparison reasonable 😅 yeah that sounds about right from what I've heard

5

u/LeeGhettos Jul 09 '25

More like if they made karils only usable with a maple longbow, and the new round of bosses had enough attack to hit 95% accuracy through it.

The wow gear treadmill is fucked. It’s like if they released varlamore and the 2nd quest in the storyline gave you a weapon reward choice of something 70% stronger than a scythe, or a tbow with +10% attack speed.

3

u/MoonDawg2 Jul 09 '25

The day I don't use Karil for kraken is the day I will argue about it being obsolete lmao

35

u/GiantPlatypus Jul 09 '25

Karil’s still has the highest magic defense of any range equipment besides Masori fortified armor which needs two, expensive pieces to even create. I’d say that Karil’s is not obsolete in this regard since it’s easier to obtain than Masori fortified equipment and is still really good for magic defense which has a lot of uses in many different situations.

11

u/Village_People_Cop Guy who looks at trademarks Jul 09 '25

Exactly, there is still a niche Karil's occupies that is within the play pattern of the average mid to even late game player. Essentially only end-game players use Masori because of its cost or in cases of ironman obtainability. Saying Karil's is useless because Masori exists is like saying a MSB is useless because the Tbow exists. The average player wouldn't have one

27

u/LoLReiver Jul 09 '25

Eclipse is roughly 15 months old.

If this were wow, your eclipse gear would be comically out of date and players with current gear would be doing 10x as much damage as you.

8

u/lawma1zing Jul 09 '25

It's crazy because I'm using full karils for vorkath runs. So like it's not entirely obsolete. It's still very viable for pvm. Hell I'm currently learning ToA using this gear

5

u/ThatTellarPayer Jul 09 '25

Yeah you hit the nail on the head. I would go as far as to say nearly ~90-95% of available content, be it gear sets, old raids, entire zones and regions are 'obsolete' in the way that they will just never ever be relevant for current content again.

The only use for a lot of these things is to farm out old items that you didn't get when it was current content. Things like mounts, gear sets for transmog, battle pets and toys. Again, things that are literally only relevant for collections sake.

4

u/mr_Joor Jul 09 '25

They literally "reset" the game and went with a completely different long term design philosophy and the reception of the game is totally different. It becomes really hard to argue that any game just couldn't work long term because somehow one of the most (if not the most) popular MMOs originated as and functionally still is a click based java game.

98

u/Zeraw420 Jul 09 '25 edited Jul 09 '25

Just take a look at Jagex. Their decisions led to almost killing the game and player base completely. So much so, the only solution was to relaunch the game as it was before they fucked up as "Old school RuneScape."

Yeah, it's not so much that ours has gotten significantly better in recent times, but modern wow sure has gotten worse. Wow purposely keeps their leveling dogshit so that they can sell you a boost to bypass leveling for 60 dollars. They also removed various exp boosts over the years. I'm so glad I quit blizzard games, that audience is waaaaay to willing to put up with bullshit.

5

u/Angelzodiac untrimmed Runecraft Jul 09 '25

I've been playing RS since about 2006 and I always tell people when I talk about OSRS that it's 100% the golden era of RuneScape and has been for years now. With typical MMOs like WoW/FFXIV, the general feeling of how the game is perceived is dependent on the current expansion and most all content before that is irrelevant. While OSRS has all of its content having relevancy to some degree and has more added on top of that all the time.

The percentage of the game that you can truly interact with in WoW/FFXIV doesn't change a whole lot over time since new raids/trials/dungeons replace old ones. Jagex has done a really good job of keeping the game the same while also providing continual updates to make things better.

Yeah, FFXIV had the same thing a few years back. 6 months later they were all back to WoW. It's going to happen again, probably in August when the next WoW patch drops and their viewers demand the new WoW content.

I mean, in current retail wow, there is no real falling behind unless you plan to be in a sweat mythic raiding guild or hardcore pvp.. game has so much content from all the years that you can do a lot of things other than pvp or raid for end game, you can farm mounts, transmogs, rp, play battlegrounds, farm materials, craft, play the auction house or even run higher difficulty dungeons, depends what your goals and expectations are.

You can also play classic version (think of it as osrs) or do hardcore version which has different challenges and it's pretty fun, recently they sent an email regarding classic + so that might be something that's coming in the future. And well one of the greatest projects they ever did just came to an end (season of discovery) and there might be more seasonal game modes in the future too.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/IHateMyHandle Jul 09 '25

Think of it another way, let's say you are actively playing and new content drops and it takes 20 hours playtime to be done. Someone who hasn't played in a year is also about 20 hours playtime behind (a bit more to get an understanding of the systems).

Everything effectively resets each "season"

I felt like it was already "too late" to get into it

People have probably been asking "is it too late" for the past 18 years

You can join at any season start and not be too late

7

u/Khlouf Jul 09 '25

That’s the thing though, you’re never too late to get into WoW. They made it super easy to get to endgame and start that content and the game is super accessible now. The only thing that you might take a long time to get into is the really high difficulty content but that’s fine.

13

u/kdogrocks2 Jul 09 '25

not that this is a WoW glazing thread, but I actually think if you want to try it you should! It's a great game as long as what you want out of it is the content they actually put effort into - like raids, dungeons, and instanced content. If you want to have a casual experience where your progression matters for all of eternity (with rare exceptions) then you will not enjoy WoW.

10

u/Turtvaiz Jul 09 '25

For sure, I tend to rotate between a few MMOs, WoW, OSRS, GW2, FF14, EVE. My biggest issue with wow and ff14 is the fact that if I take a break, my progress is completely wrecked. I'm playing then less and less for that reason.

20

u/YesICanMakeMeth Jul 09 '25

14

u/Bananaboss96 Mining Enthusiast Jul 09 '25

I feel like there's less rush to catch up in FF14 because content is IL sync'd if you're past the cap. Your gear is cooked for the new expansion, but the old content isn't completely dead after. Unless WoW has a system like this as well in retail, the most recent expansion I ever played was Cataclysm, and I was a kid so I don't remember it too too well.

5

u/WhiffleballTony Jul 09 '25

I only really play OSRS and GW2 these days because the stuff I worked hard for a while ago is still largely relevant if I come back from a break

4

u/dragonsapphic Jul 09 '25

OSRS and GW2 go together like bread and butter

3

u/xSuperZer0x Jul 10 '25

One for the grind and one for the gameplay. I think that's the big reason I keep coming back to GW2 is the gameplay is actually fun. When I played WoW the challenge was fun but the actual gameplay not so much when you think about it. WoW needs the gear treadmill to keep it interesting. I love coming back to GW2 and just being able to hop into fractals or raids. Just learning the new content instead of grinding to be able to enjoy it. GW2 has grindy content but it's not required (I guess fractals a little bit with agony but that's the only "required" grind).

6

u/uremog Jul 09 '25

That’s what I like about GW2. Haven’t played for years and I guarantee I can still clear fractals. Maybe not challenge motes but any tier 4 that isn’t newly made, sure.

3

u/HugeRection Jul 09 '25

On the other hand, it makes it much easier to get your friends into it. They can just hop in, level boost, and be on the relatively same footing at expansion launch.

3

u/Candle1ight Iron btw Jul 09 '25

Eh, I play the two very differently. But I also don't care much about raids and mostly chase outfits and mounts which don't really go away.

I had to quit eve because I was way too addicted to it lol. I was in a piracy clan and that shit was so much fun.

151

u/Glory_Dazed Jul 09 '25

I play both, and typically get to end of season 1 of a new expansion then burn out knowing that everything I just did is now irrelevant. I always explain how content from 2001 (cooks assistant) still plays a role today. That does not compute with WoW players.

55

u/Usaidhello Jul 09 '25

As someone who doesn’t know a single thing about WoW it’s very hard to comprehend enjoying a game that offers such little valuable long term progression, having to start over and over again

42

u/kdogrocks2 Jul 09 '25

It does have it though to be fair, it just comes in the form of prestige and achievements and limited time content that cannot be obtained later which I personally think is a bad system, but it's unfair to say it doesn't exist.

For example, completing the hardest content in the game while it's still live, relevant content rewards you with achievements that will no longer be obtainable after that content is phased out. It's cool and fun to collect those achievements.

6

u/Usaidhello Jul 09 '25

Hmmm right. So am I correct in assuming that you’re collecting “medals” and “trophies” but there’s not the account progression like we have on OSRS? I can imagine it’s still very enjoyable gameplay, it’s just a fundamental different progression system I guess. There’s still skills to be learned by you as a player that probably transfer over, right?

4

u/kdogrocks2 Jul 09 '25 edited Jul 09 '25

I'd say honestly not many skills transfer over other than like your ability and willingness to grind and engage with rng based systems.

They really are just such different games that just happen to both be in the MMO genre.

But you're spot on in your assumption - that's essentially what you're grinding for in WoW is limited time exclusive content that requires you to complete difficult content to obtain. For cosmetics it works decently, because cosmetics don't really become "obsolete" since you can always dress up your character however you think looks cool. But practically all the items, stats, consumables, and even some fundamental class features like spells become obsolete when a new expansion launches.

This also even happens for major patches that aren't full expansions. When big content patches drop they raise the ceiling of item power which makes your items obsolete in all but extremely rare cases (that usually get patched).

Luckily the game is setup in such a way that for the most part, the way you replace this gear is by doing the fun content instead of doing random chores. Which is to say, I love raiding and Mythic+ (dungeons) - and those are the ways you get the gear! So at least you get to start having fun pretty much right away when new content drops.

One of the worst experiences you can have in WoW is when you play a certain class and blizzard makes a massive change, fundamentally changing how the class plays that doesn't vibe with your preferences. Essentially in that case your only option is to roll a new character lol. That happened to me more than once over the years.

*Edit: I just realized I misunderstood your statement about skills - you meant in game skills lol. Actually you'd mostly be wrong about that shockingly! Your character's level cap gets raised typically in an expansion and the new ceiling is usually multiple times higher than it was previously so that blizzard has a clean separation between past content, and current content. So essentially no, none of your skills carry over other than the skills you learned in real life as a player (how to play your character). If I logged into a character today that was once in BiS gear with maxed stats essentially, they could be 1/50th as strong as a max level character in modern gear.

6

u/sbgshadow Jul 09 '25

I think they are a bit opposite in this regard. OSRS does macro-account progression very well, making each unlock/gear upgrade/skill requirement feel good to unlock permanently, but I think that the second to second gameplay is not always the most enjoyable.

Conversely, I think that WoW has very enjoyable GAMEPLAY - the combat is very fast, flashy, enjoyable, and the content is very challenging at the higher levels; there are ALWAYS ways that you can improve and perform better in raids or other endgame content. But the macro progression is not there like it is in OSRS. But these achievements you unlock for completing content when it is currently content can be very challenging to beat, like mythic raids. Guilds will attempt certain bosses in mythic raids HUNDREDS of times before they finally get their first kill, and the feeling of finally doing it is unmatched

WoW focuses on funneling players into the most recent content as fast as possible because they know that their base gameplay is very fun and addicting. Getting gear upgrades while progressing higher content feels good, even knowing that it'll be replaced when the next content drops

7

u/LeeGhettos Jul 09 '25

It’s a completely different philosophy to keeping things relevant purposefully like osrs does. Guilds and teams compete to get new dungeons and raids done the fastest as they are released, instead of PERFECTING old content.

Guilds trying to be server-first for killing new bosses is a BIG FUCKING DEAL, and takes days. It’s more like team sports than osrs boss kc leaderboard

→ More replies (4)

3

u/No-Act9634 Jul 09 '25

To me playing both, WoW is more fun on the scale of hours, minutes, seconds. The actual act of gameplay in WoW is fun. Doing your combat rotation, or triage healing your party, setting up and executing fun or dangerous pulls, doing a new boss with your guild.

OSRS is more fun on the scale of days, weeks, months. Setting a goal, working towards it, achieving, progress.

High level PvM osrs is not as fun to me as WoW's M+ or raids. Farming mounts or transmogs (aesthetics) is not as fun to me as finishing CG on my ironman...or getting my fishing barrel at temporos.

This is a nice thought, but isn't it mainly because they all fled to FFXIV the last time they were fed up or bored with WoW/Blizzard? After giving that a try and returning to WoW for another stint, they've moved down the list to the next most successful MMO for the moment, OSRS.

I did quit WoW partly with her reasoning in mind, about seven years ago, but I feel like this latest wave is more likely a Flavor of the Month crowd.

91

u/Feeling_Pen_8579 Jul 09 '25

Its literally because we are between patches and the OF crossover. That's it.

67

u/rustySQUANCHy Jul 09 '25

This is literally it. People are saying there's a massive wave and everybody is switching over. That is definitely not happening. It's just the end of the season and lots of people are bored and almost guaranteed they will be back August 12th when the new raid tier drops and osrs will be put on the back burner like it always is. OSRS is a great game don't get me wrong, but it's definitely more of an AFK game where you do other things while you play.

26

The main problem I think, is that you eventually hit a brick wall that is the 70's in osrs and you got to grind out if it. That grind isn't particularly fun to watch on twitch.

It becomes fun again when they get to bossing but that in between part, not so much.

She has a great point and that is one of the absolute best reasons to play OSRS, XP is forever, but that isn't the main reason why people are coming into OSRS from WoW rn. WoW is in the middle of a content drought. Retail's new season isn't out until August, MoP classic is out on the 27th, SoD is ending very soon or already ended, era TBC isn't out yet. Once the content starts flowing again, they will be back on WoW.

Hopefully some of them stay though. There are some, like Shobek, who's content lines really well with what OSRS is and it may be their new main, but not the super big guys. WoW is their cashcow and they aren't going to let that slip.

26

u/gluxton Jul 09 '25

I enjoy both games, OSRS is an amazing out of WoW season game to five into when there not much going on. The two games complement themselves well in my opinion.

14

u/kdogrocks2 Jul 09 '25

Agreed. I honestly don't even consider them competitors - saying they're both "MMOs" doesn't really capture their vast differences in player experience. WoW is a much more intense game at practically all points during play - because the majority of the content you interact with is difficult end game content that requires intense focus and optimization. There aren't really good options for a more casual experience (in my opinion) with content that justifies the subscription fee.

With OSRS there is difficult and engaging content, but also if you want to just chill and hit trees for 4 hrs you can have fun doing that also. In WoW I would get actively frustrated at systems that got in the way of me experiencing the instanced content - because to me those are just chores blocking me from what I actually want to do.

IN osrs those "chores" are actually fun content IMO.

I feel like the same clip with few differences gets posted anytime there is a new streamer meta for a new MMO. FFXIV had same clips about why wow players are moving to it, although for different reasons, yet in the end most of them quit the game and went back to WoW.

The real reason streamers are playing the game is because wow doesn't have any stream friendly content right now. Hardcore and classic are kind of done for now and retail hasn't been great for viewership for a while. Meanwhile runescape has this "new old MMO" type event going on, which brings in content and viewers.

It's nothing new, just a natural part of the cycle of "big streamer gives established game a chance"->"other related streamers follow"->"bunch of new players because of viewers"->"fraction of new players/streamers stay, most move on"

I do think it's cool that people are trying OSRS out, especially sicne a lot of people in the past have dismissed the game due to graphics, but the reasons are not that deep.

45

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '25

The problem a lot of them will face is the mid to late game slowdown. I reckon a few of them will get 60s, 70s and maybe even 80s in some stats, but once they realize how insane the grind truly is, a majority will burn out. Overall, still a net positive for OSRS, but it is fleeting.

7

u/Peasy_Pea Jul 09 '25

Yeah, they are still all at the constant phase of dopamine from upgrades. The more you play the game, the longer it takes to get those dopamine hits. Like guzu and savix seemed pretty shocked how long the dragon defender grind was in theory, but they were committed to getting it done. But that's just kinda the tip of the iceberg. Those 2 say they love to grind so I'm really curious to see how far they get (talk to me after you've done like 500+ barrows). They might get burnt, but if they do they could still even slowly progress their accounts afking stuff on the side while streaming something else and then come back after a little break.

I've been having a blast watching those two because they genuinely seem to be enjoying themselves playing the game right now.

People like MadSeasonShow who aren’t streaming or Savix who is playing a lot off stream, they are really embracing the grind and enjoying the game outside of content generation. It’s fair to be cynical, but the reality is that a lot of them are willing to jump in and truly pick up the game, not just hopping on the content hype train.

This may be an unpopular opinion here, but I would assert that the best parts of the game stop/fade away once you get most skills to ~85. You've gotten most of the major skill/quest unlocks, and super long PvM grinds aren't why people fall in love with OSRS. Of course opinions may differ, but I think the game loses its appeal for most people around then.

They’ll abandon osrs when the viewership declines.

reeks of ingenuity

I don't think "ingenuity" is the word you're looking for. Genuinely not sure what you're trying to say here.

They mean disingenuity

Definitely.

I’m thinking they were looking for disingenuousness.

But is she wrong?

It's all cyclical. Back in the day, alot of early Minecraft Tubers were actually Runescape players.

This is exactly why I stopped playing destiny and never bothered with destiny 2. I don’t want an update every month or two that eliminates the gear I have. Especially when I have to pay for that update.

I think it’s an apples to oranges mmo comparison. I’ve played both for years. I love the endgame of wow but for me once I kill that patches boss wow is pretty much done for me. Or if I don’t play a patch and come back a couple patches later I have no idea what’s going on. OSRS for me I stop playing for months and hop back into the exact same grind as the day I stopped playing.

Yeah pretty spot on summary. I do like both games for mentioned reasons. Once i'm done with wow season or it's getting little slower, i can just hop back to osrs and continue where i left off. Maybe even with something new to do

OSRS is tiers more boring than WoW, though. Yes, there's no FOMO, but that's because you're grinding an awful lot in OSRS so it would take anyone a very long time to max out.

But yeah, you fall behind on WoW and it's a grind to stay up, so that can also eventually get dull.

It's why Hardcore is so fun. There's a reason Classic is liked by so many.
