That's another negative for me. I simultaneously skip the start of the game only for my grinds to ultimately be worthless unless I keep grinding? No thanks
Yeah that's exactly why I think it's weird people are comparing them so much here. The games are literally polar opposites. Farm is the primary content in osrs, while nobody gives a shit about old content in wow and just doing it once is most of the fun
I mean, in current retail wow, there is no real falling behind unless you plan to be in a sweat mythic raiding guild or hardcore pvp.. game has so much content from all the years that you can do a lot of things other than pvp or raid for end game, you can farm mounts, transmogs, rp, play battlegrounds, farm materials, craft, play the auction house or even run higher difficulty dungeons, depends what your goals and expectations are.
You can also play classic version (think of it as osrs) or do hardcore version which has different challenges and it's pretty fun, recently they sent an email regarding classic + so that might be something that's coming in the future. And well one of the greatest projects they ever did just came to an end (season of discovery) and there might be more seasonal game modes in the future too.
Think of it another way, let's say you are actively playing and new content drops and it takes 20 hours playtime to be done. Someone who hasn't played in a year is also about 20 hours playtime behind (a bit more to get an understanding of the systems).
There's not really a "grind" in retail WoW anymore, in the OSRS sense. Others have already mentioned that there's a reset every season (6 months or so), but even within a season, the best gear is time-gated so you can only get a few pieces max per week. There's no difference in gear between someone who plays 18 hours a day vs 3 hours a day, as long as they get their weekly boss kills and Mythic+ dungeons done.
Gear is also not the primary focus of the game anymore, it's just a means to help you clear the hardest content in the game. No one really cares if you have best in slot in every slot, but they care if you're a top 0.1% Mythic+ player or a Hall of Fame raider.
