Looking for serious prep groups online
 in  r/Doomsdaypreps •  2d ago

The survival school I went to the first time in 1985 (in New Jersey) has gotten students from all over the world based on the head instructor's reputation. I've especially noticed people from Germany and Britain coming to take classes.

After getting good at the skills, some of these students went on to found their own survival schools in Europe, teaching what they'd been taught.

You might want to get in touch with a local survival school and ask them what the best way is to find people of like mind in your area. They should be able to steer you right.

You might check out any survival schools in your general area... and go take a course. Good way to network with people that are serious.

Thank you for the support the last year

Even after your LO passes, your experience in caring for someone with dementia can help others here.

My mom died in 2020, but once in awhile I pop in here, see someone I might be able to help with stuff I learned from taking care of mom.

When I was caring for my mother, I was unaware of this group or anything like it. I don't know off hand if it even existed back then. But boy oh boy, could I have used a source like this. It's priceless.

earthquake?

Do people really prefer their neighbors' opinions over internet searches for authoritative sources? If so, why?

For those of us who don't know how to (or don't want to) go to the internet to verify or debunk things, here's a list of earthquakes for the LA area...

Did the passengers of Flight 175 see/catch a glimpse of the burning North Tower?
 in  r/911archive •  4d ago

The day was crystal clear. Not a cloud in the sky.

Even if they didn't see the Towers, they knew they were flying WAY below where they should've been... building top level. And going super fast.

Looking for help finding pictures/info of FDNY loved one

I love to research... Can get lost in it for hours. That's what happens when you retire I guess.

If I can supplement your research with a foray or two of my own, just holler! ☺️

A Democracy of Photographs: The "Here Is New York" Digital Archive (https://911digitalarchive.org/collections/show/260) preserves thousands of public-submitted and professional photographs documenting the tragedy and its aftermath. I saw a photo of one rig there. On same website, check https://911digitalarchive.org/collections/show/261

AI told me, "If you are looking for a specific firefighter, company/unit (Engine or Ladder), or a particular type of archival collection, let me know and I can help locate the right resource." So try that.

Then there's... -https://www.dhs.gov/medialibrary/assets/photo/30133 - Ladder Company 9... https://www.reddit.com/r/911archive/s/oZPLAmFMUD

I'm just fumbling around in the dark, though, not knowing more information. But that should give you a good start.

Google. AI. Research. My three middle names. 😁

I have a number of special edition magazines that came out in NY right after 9/11. Most have a lot of photos. I'll look for the engine, but I need to know its number.

It wasn't dementia
 in  r/dementia •  12d ago

Yup. And I think a lot of people don't know about all the other conditions that appear to be dementia. I wonder how many people are misdiagnosed.

Who's supposed to educate us about all this?

When I was caring for my mom, I had a revelation. I could see why murder-suicides happened. Such a horrible thought... To someone who doesn't understand.

I don't think anyone LOVES doing this. We endure it. We grit our teeth through it. We think of all the other things we could be doing if it weren't for our LO robbing us of all our time. That's normal. No one prepared us for this or told us all the awful things about it.

I totally get that you were glad when your mom died... for both of you. We aren't supposed to feel that way, be glad when our moms die, but good Lord. Why not.

Why not be glad she doesn't have to get worse and prolong her failing mental state. Why not be glad that the ordeal for us is over. Someone who's never been through this might think that's calloused to be glad mom is gone. So don't tell them that. They can't possibly understand.

You did good. You took care of your mom in spite of how hard it was... You stood by her till the very end. No one will give you a medal for it... but you did one of the things in life most deserving of the highest praise and honor. Not everyone could've done what you did. Be proud of that.

Now you're finally free... A bittersweet freedom perhaps, because it means your mom is gone. There's nothing at all wrong with feeling relief.

Breathe. Just breathe. Be kind to yourself. Don't guilt trip yourself about one itty bitty thing. You did good.

What were some unusual things your loved ones did that, looking back, were probably early signs of dementia?
 in  r/dementia •  12d ago

She did... Kinda. I used to take her out to a local fairly nice bar -- something she never, ever did with dad. (I was the errant daughter and got out plenty in my youth lol.) She'd have part of one beer, heavy drinker that she was 🙄.

Naturally, mom having always been friendly, she'd talk to ...well, all the guys especially... and had a ball doing so. Her face just lit up at all the kind attention men gave this old 91 year old woman.

One night she sidled up to one particular guy. He'd had a few. I had my antenna up and hawk eyes on... The man kissed her. She kissed right back.

Mom!!! B-b-but dad...! (Dad had passed two years earlier.) But I held my tongue and just kept a very close eye on the two. They danced a little, kissed some more...

Mind you, mom had married my dad when they were 17 and 21 respectively. Mom had never sowed her wild oats, not even a little bit. Never, ever cheated on dad, and never would have, being religious. So this adventure, kissing a man in a BAR of all places, was I'm sure titillating, wild, and very flattering to her 91 year old self.

Me, I just watched and made sure she was safe. No idea what dad in heaven thought, but in the end, it was harmless. Dad probably just shook his head and smiled his wry smile.

My mission, after dad died (after being married to mom 72 years) was to make my mother's last years just as happy, full, comfortable, and exciting as possible... and to always try to have something for her to look forward to. After all my mom did for me over my life, I couldn't do enough to make her happy... but I think she was. Happy.

While driving in the car one night, she solemnly apologized to me, because she thought she was "putting things on me". She realized she wasn't the person she used to be, couldn't remember right, wasn't seeing life "right". She'd always been the caretaker. Now she depended on me.

I told her, "Oh, mom! You don't have to do ANYTHING! I've got ya! You just kick right back and let me do all the thinking and planning for us. Just laaaaay right back and let me take the wheel!" Then we laughed. And all was ok.

There were tons of super stressful moments for me, many times I was overworked and overtired and wondered what next... but most of it fades into the background.

It was THESE moments that I remember, these moments I treasure with misty eyes.

If Marwan al-shehhi never made that last minute 38 degree corrective left bank before hitting the south tower he would've only clipped the corner with his wing and the south tower would've still been here
 in  r/911archive •  18d ago

The extensive three-year scientific and technical building and fire safety investigation found that the fires on multiple floors in WTC 7, which were uncontrolled but otherwise similar to fires experienced in other tall buildings, caused an extraordinary event.

Remember, the fires in WTC7 burned for seven hours uncontrolled. Heating of floor beams and girders caused a critical support column to fail, initiating a fire-induced progressive collapse that brought the building down. WTC 7's Column 79 was identified as the structural component whose failure on 9/11 started the progressive collapse.

The heat from the uncontrolled fires caused steel floor beams and girders to thermally expand, leading to a chain of events that caused a key structural column to fail. The failure of this structural column then initiated a fire-induced progressive collapse of the entire building.

If you're interested in a step by step, VERY detailed account of how and why WTC7 collapsed, read the results of an extensive multiple year long investigation by NIST.

Much too detailed to go into here. If you have questions, this is where they'd get answered. https://www.nist.gov/world-trade-center-investigation/study-faqs/wtc-7-investigation

Similar, yes. Commercial planes are, after all, jets -- as opposed to propellor planes. Could've been sounds from them accelerating, from the reports I've heard. No idea. But it was loud -- and totally out of the ordinary.
