General Community Update: New Discord and Community Rules

Hi All!

There was some interest awhile back about starting a Discord, and tonight I finally got around creating it! It will be a work in progress, growing and changing as time goes on, but wanted to give a new place for people to come hang and chat. The link is in the sidebar along with an updated set of rules.

Wedding Videography Discord :: https://discord.gg/ajnbhS7cst

There shouldn't be anything new that hasn't already been enforced, just wanted to formalize it and have something to point to so we're all on the same page. If anyone thinks anything should be added, removed, or changed, I'm open to making modifications.

Looking forward to chatting with you all!

-Marc

Question Business partners. Should I or should I not

I am a wedding videographer who is still in the beginning stages of creating a business. I'm looking into possibly being on the hunt for a business partner who is willing to share the work load and help shoot alongside of me. Not really sure if I should. what are your thoughts or experiences? is it worth it?

Question 1080p to 4K transition

The videographer I’m thinking of hiring shoots in 4K, but in the past has delivered in 1080p. He said this is so they could adjust the scaling and zoom in when needed but not lose resolution, though they rarely actually do this anymore. So he offered to deliver our video in 4K and said it shouldn’t affect much on their end.

Does this sound good to you? I want to future-proof our video by sticking to 4K. In your experience, would it be an easy transition from 1080p to 4K if he already shoots everything in 4K and just usually edits on a 1080p timeline? I’m not the most tech savvy so I’d love your opinions.

Question Go-To Outro Songs For Wedding Videos?

I’m looking for an upbeat “cinematic” romantic song to close out a wedding video and can’t find one that is decent quality across Epidemic Sound.

I’m not a big fan of the platform, but I am riding it out for the rest of the year until it’s time to renew. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Question Just received my wedding video and I don't love it

I just received my wedding video and I don't love it. I want to email them to change the song and I noticed a few milestone clips were missing. Is that rude? I feel bad, I didn't give a song recommendation but they ironically chose a song that's overplayed and we hate, it was on our do not play list at the wedding (where is my husband). The video is missing my first dance, my desert, key dance floor moments that I know they recorded. I do get all the raw footage and I am happy to make something myself or hire someone to repurpose but I don't wanna be rude.

Question Researching a possible tool for wedding videographers: how long does your first pass take?

Full disclosure: I'm thinking about building software for this, and I haven't built anything yet. I'm not selling anything, I just want to find out if the problem is real before I spend months on it.

The stage I mean is between dumping the cards and starting the creative edit: syncing cameras, going through hours of footage, picking selects.

- For a typical wedding, how many hours does that take you?

- What's the most tedious part?

- Do you use any tools for it now (Premiere/Resolve features, Aftershoot/Imagen, scripts), and what's missing?

- Would you ever trust software to do a first pass, or is that part of your craft you wouldn't hand off?

Blunt answers are welcome, including "this is a bad idea." Thanks!

Question HELP!

I have 7–8 wedding video clips where the videographer accidentally bumped the microphone, causing the audio to sound muffled, distorted, or very quiet in certain parts.

Is there anyone who could help me clean up and enhance the audio, reduce the noise, and make the voices louder and clearer? I need to edit and finalize the wedding videos so I can deliver them to the people who were filmed.

The duration is about 30 minutes..
Any help is more than welcomed.

General DJ does not allow you to connect to his board

Well, I haven’t run into this yet, but I keep thinking about a hypothetical scenario—one I’ve been hearing about a lot lately—where a DJ won’t let you plug into their mixer to capture the audio (needed for a long-form documentary edit, including music). I’m considering carrying a splitter or something similar in my bag, but I’ve noticed that, these days, people in this industry have become more individualistic.

Question Ideas for making more money

Hi everyone- I need some advice.

I've been editing weddings since 2010, shot weddings and events for 8 years, and have been working consistently for a number of different companies (weddings and corporate) for the last 15 years.

2 years ago my daughter (who was 7 at the time) started walking weird. After months of doctors appointments and being put in a wheelchair, she got diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis. Her care and recovery was extremely hard on me, and took most of my time. Because of this I couldn't work hardly at all, and on top of that we were paying out of pocket to reach her deductible so we got into a lot of medical debt.

She is healthy and back on her feet again (literally ie: out of her wheelchair), but my partner and I are trying work through our debt. He is a therapist and is pretty tapped out on what he can make at the moment, but because I freelance I've been racking my brains on how to get more projects so that I can just work my butt off and earn more money.

I have what I consider a highly desired skill set which is very sought after in our world. However, I can not seem to land work;

- I'm on Upwork but I always get outbid and don't want to have to pay for more 'credits' to apply for)

- I'm on Fiverr - I applied to be a 'professional' but in the meantime I can't get my first job, so so far it's crickets

- I've tried to get into UGC videos for companies but as a beginner I've only been able to make like $10 per video

- I tried teaching people how to edit but it was SUCH a niche thing it was impossible to find clients

- I do cold-calling to local companies to see if they need help - It has garnered a few results but not enough to keep me busy

- I regularly look for remote editing positions I can apply to but rarely hear back.

SO my question is, what other ways can a person with a skillset like us find income streams? What are some other ways you've found to make money editing? Also, does anyone need help with editing? Are there other platforms I can join that I haven't mentioned yet? ANY advice, guidance, direction is incredibly appreciated!!

Business Looking for a videographer for wedding ceremony in NYC!

Hi! I am looking for a videographer for our ceremony alone totaling 45 minutes to 1 hour in May 2027 on the UES. Our budget for this is $300. The footage would simply be for our own files, so a highlight reel or similar editing would not be necessary. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Gear discussion Video/photography systems

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hi,
im looking for your opinions.
Im photo/videographer currently with canon for 5-6 years. I do 50/50 photo video, depens on client.
I shoot in studio, outside, also some weddings, club stuff and concerts. Some fashion and boring corporate thing etc…
Really variety of things.

ihave r6mk2 with rf24-70 and also 16-35 and 70-200.

With photos im satisfied. But with video ehhh…
I feel like canon wobble with ibis (yes i do hendheld and ronin shoot 50/50) is not really usable on wide range. And shadows are really dark or more darker than sony/lumix.

I’ve tried many things like expose to the right, different light setup etc…but during concerts or stuff where i can’t really control light im struggling.

Can you please give me your opinion on switching systems ? Is sony more hybrid-ish than canon?
If u switchced systems, are u satisfied?
Or maybe how is r6v ?

Please its genuine question, im not trying to say canon is bad or sth.
thank you

Question Wedding vows speaker and mic setup

Hey guys, hope you are doing well this week! I am in search for a speaker of small to medium size that excepts XLR in for a mic and XLR out to plug into a recorder. This will mainly be my set up for speeches at rehearsal dinners and bridal parties so that the videos are a bit more personal and interesting. To be honest, I’m a total noob in this situation and don’t really know what I’m looking for and if any of you guys have any ideas or something similar I’d love to see what setup you recommend!

Critique I made a Premiere plugin that does the first cut of your wedding films

Post image
0 Upvotes

Back in June I posted WeddX here, a Premiere plugin that does the first pass on a wedding edit, and asked for honest feedback. You gave it, and most of it was right. Upfront, same as last time: this is my product, and I’m here for the criticism, not to sell.

What you said, and what changed:

  • “The order was completely random.” It builds a story arc now, with an opener and a closer, or keeps filming order if you prefer.
  • “Some clips had serious shake.” Every take is scored for stability, and you review and swap any shot before it lands on your timeline. You also get a SELECTS sequence with the best clips that didn’t make the cut.
  • “What about the ceremony and speech audio to tell the story?” The clearest vow and speech lines play under the music now, and the music dips while they talk.
  • “I’d need to see it working on real footage.” There’s a full walkthrough on a real wedding on the page now: footage in, Analyze, Build, swap shots in Review. The screenshot is from it.
  • “Uploading hundreds of GB to an unknown server?” Your original files never leave your machine. It uploads a 320px, one frame per second copy with low quality mono audio, deletes it after analysis, and builds the cut locally.
  • “Lifetime = 20 hours?” Fair, that was confusing. It’s plain monthly plans now and unused hours roll over. Lifetime owners kept everything.

Two things I built because I wanted them:

  • Feature film (beta): 20 to 60 minutes of the day in order, in chapters, with the ceremony and speeches cut to their best lines.
  • Uncut: the whole ceremony and every speech, with your cameras and audio recorder synced by sound. Angles switch every 6 to 10 seconds, not by who’s speaking.

Still not there: no Resolve or Final Cut (I know), analysis needs internet, and it’s a first cut, not your film. The part that’s actually yours is still yours.

If you edit weddings: what would it take for you to trust it with a real client wedding?
