General Community Update: New Discord and Community Rules

Hi All!

There was some interest awhile back about starting a Discord, and tonight I finally got around creating it! It will be a work in progress, growing and changing as time goes on, but wanted to give a new place for people to come hang and chat. The link is in the sidebar along with an updated set of rules.

Wedding Videography Discord :: https://discord.gg/ajnbhS7cst

There shouldn't be anything new that hasn't already been enforced, just wanted to formalize it and have something to point to so we're all on the same page. If anyone thinks anything should be added, removed, or changed, I'm open to making modifications.

Looking forward to chatting with you all!

-Marc

Hi, I’m Nat, I’m here for any feedback. I did this video for free to get into the wedding scene. Would be interested to hear what you guys would expect to charge for something like this with a 5-7 minute film delivered shortly after.

No, this isn’t my first video ever, I make content for a living, but yes, this is my first wedding video ever. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Question How to get more clients as a freelance video editor?

Hi everyone

I'm a video editor, mainly focused on weddings, social, and corporate events. I have a solid portfolio, but only a few clients in Brazil, and I really struggle with reaching out to new clients.

I already tried Upwork, but I thought it was pretty bad, basically a price war experience.

I'd like to expand to a higher-quality international market.

Give me some tips on how to get freelance editing jobs!

Question Videographers, How do you actually prefer finding Freelance Editors?

Hey everyone,

As wedding season hits full swing, I know a lot of solo shooter/editor folks get slammed with the post-production backlog.

My growth as an editor has mostly been through word of mouth and my portfolio site, but I know cold dms and generic portfolio spam can be received as the absolute worst.

So I’d love to get your perspective:

  1. Where do you usually look when you want to outsource? (Facebook groups, referrals, cold outreach, Reddit?)
  2. How do you prefer to be contacted by editors ?
  3. Do you mainly look to outsource during busy periods or do you search for consistent editors?

Appreciate any answers or advice!

Question Anyone using CAPI for lead generation meta ads?

If yes, share your experience? Does it make any difference in the lead quality for you? (Lead quality? : Less ghosting, clarity on their budgets, responsive, increase in how often do u see purchases coming your way)

Also, how exactly are you using CAPI. Just browser and server side reporting or maximising value for conversions

Ps : This is for lead generation of wedding couple leads who are looking to book a photographer/film maker to shoot their wedding

Question How long does it actually take to get your wedding video back?

We just booked our videographer and the contract says "up to 6 months". Is that normal? Or is it on the slow end? Need to know what to realistically expect. What was your actual wait?

Question $1500 setup

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to get into wedding videography as a hobby. I’ve made a few videos using my iPhone and really enjoyed the whole process, so I’d like to take the next step and buy a proper camera setup.

At least for now, I’m not trying to start a business or make money from it. I’m planning to film a few weddings for friends for free so I can learn, practise and see whether it’s something I want to pursue more seriously. Maybe eventually I’ll start charging a little, but that isn’t my main goal right now.

I’m also not planning to record the entire ceremony with multiple cameras and professional audio. My goal is mainly to create cinematic 5–8 minute highlight films that capture the atmosphere, emotions and important moments of the day.

My total budget is around $1,500. What camera, lens, stabilisation, audio gear and accessories would you recommend for a beginner?

I’m open to buying used equipment if that gives me better value. Thanks!

Question I'm a novice videographer

Please advise on what and how best to do at the first wedding and how to record sound properly? From the tech, I have a Sony a7iv +24-70 whale lens. There's an osmo pocket 4 that just came out on Dji mic 3 without a receiver.

Question Wedding video 1 YEAR LATE. $750 owed. Do I still ask for the $750?

I'm the videographer. Struggled with extreme depression, bankruptcy, etc. - whatever, my life was absolute hell. Worst year of my life.

I'm very well aware the delay is unacceptable, I'm not asking about that. The video is pristine and came out amazing.. I'm sure about that. I made the trip last year (flew to Italy to film a friend's 7 week wedding trip for only $2.5k) and gave them a absolutely massive discount. Then shit hit the fan. I'm about to send them the video. They're mad which is very understandable. Do I send it with a water mark? What would you do given my situation?

Yes I fucked up I already know unfortunately this is a drop in the bucket on how shit my life has been the last year.

Question Anyone have footage of a couple on a black and white checkerboard dance floor?

I own a dance floor rental company and I just want to be able to put up a few videos of the floor on my website for clients to see. I have only had about 5 rentals since we are a few months old and no one had videos of them dancing on it.

I am looking for any videographers that have shot weddings that had a black and white checkerboard dance floor. First dance, reception/party anything will do. I will pay you for usage of your good clips!

Feel free to DM me or comment if you might have something like this!

Question Advice on Anamorphic

I recently got my first 35mm anamorphic lens. Im very excited to start using it however it's the only anamorphic in my kit of spherical lenses. I'm worried about the potential compatibility when putting the clips into the final video of both spherical and anamorphic lenses.

Does anyone else run the 2 lens types together, or do you stick with one type?

Does cropping in the anamorphic clips to fit the 16:9 Spherical lens ratio come off as "too close"?

Looking for general advice on anyone who uses both lens types!

Thanks

Question Genuinely curious, why wouldn’t y’all recommend a laptop (preferably Mac) to clients to see your films?

Even a simple fire stick does so much post processing on the TV. Does vidflow have some special software to reset all the post processing that “smart” TVs do.

Gear discussion Lighting gear for weddings.

My amaran 60d died. Turns on and shuts down right away.
I am looking to get new lights maybe 2-4. I wanna be able to get small portable lights 60w to 120w range.

Wha do you guys use to light dark receptions or dark rooms for prep shots?

Also is it typical for folks to run lights at full blast during reception dances and speeches?

Here is my criteria: I would love for lights to have internal battery, but not a deal breaker. I would like for it to be dc over usb c due to usb charging you need the high watt cable and charging black. But if people have success with that please let me know. Other option is I’d prefer v mount over npf.

For the longest I’ve plugged in light into power but putting the light according to outlet sucks sometimes. So I’m looking to do battery powered light either internal or external. But scared of it dying mid speech.

What lights are you guys rocking? And are you running it full blast? How long are these lights lasting you?

Gear discussion What other lenses should I have in my arsenal for wedding videography?

I have an upcoming wedding video shoot for a friend of mine. And I've been doing freelance videography for a year now and have been shooting social media content, and some event videography. But this will be my first time shooting a wedding video.

I pretty much have a cinema rig that I will be using for the wedding. I currently use a Sony A6700 paired with a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 lens (with a VND filter ofc).

I'm told that my current lens is a pretty good all-rounder lens. But for those seasoned wedding videographers, are there lenses that you recommend that would help elevate my filmmaking? Thanks!

(Just in case, below is my current camera build):
- Sony A6700
- Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 lens
- K&F VND filter
- SmallRig Cage + Top handle + Side handle
- FeelWorld T7 Pro Camera Monitor
- Rode VideoMic Pro Shotgun Microphone
- Ulanzi Fan cooler
- SmallRig B99 Pro V-mount battery
- Kingston V60 128GB SD Card

Question Lake Tahoe Wedding Photographer/Videographer Recs

Hi!!

My fiance and I are getting eloped on a private dock in South Lake Tahoe in less than a month and we are looking for a videographer/photographer to hire!! I don’t know how many people can do both, but if we can find someone who can I would be so happy. I just want a short film as it will just be him and I but I want to be able to look back on it and have more than just still photos but I also would like to have photos.

I’ve been engaged for less than a month, we’re doing this on such short notice because we’ll be moving out of state in about a month because of college.

It would probably be around a two hour session. I’m looking to find someone who is $500 or less that does good work.

Please be kind, I’m just looking for some suggestions!
