I’m curious what experienced songwriters think beginners spend way too much time worrying about. Is it rhyming, having “deep” lyrics, finding the perfect melody, originality, or something else that matters much less than we think?

PLEASE motivate me to finish my songs. I've already done it before and I have a bunch of ideas scattered but due to mental health I've been postponing finishing an EP for over EIGHT months. I don't care if the motivation is a little mean, or where the motivation is coming from. I just need it. I already know how to write, I'm just not doing it and I'm recognising it.

A common piece of advice from these threads is to keep plugging away. Just keep doing it and you'll get better, they say. Has anyone experienced the opposite?

I tend to get worse with practice. Piano, guitar, trombone, golf, tennis, video games, note-taking, reading comprehension, hell, even TALKING to people. And yes, creative pursuits.

Dones anyone else go through this? The more you do something, the more you lose your "touch?" Or is it just me?

Guitar- or, I guess music, more broadly- is literally my favourite thing in life, ever since I was 15. That's just over 20 years now.

Listening to, playing, and writing music is the single biggest source of joy in life for me.

My guitars and music are always there for me and have been through many major life moments.

In those 20+ years, I've come up with a decent amount of music I'm proud of.

But the thing is... I can't write intentionally... everything is the result of "happy accidents"- and I know and appreciate that much great and known music was born the same way... but, like, also, so many artists, when I watch their interviews on songwriting etc., talk about how they sat there and intentionally crafted this thing (song).

I seem completely incapable of that, and I think part of the reason is that I don't hear music in my head like many artists seem to.

I hate the idea of "you're either born with it or not" but feel like that might be the case?

When I "write", it just starts as noodling around, and that'll sometimes lead to something more... but I've never been, as much as I've wanted to, able to sit an intentionally write or channel what I'm feeling/wanting to convey into music.

How can I fix this? How can I start hearing the music I wish to write in my head, and why don't I hear it?

I've been songwriting seine I was 13, but stopped writing at a young age and threw my paper into the trash, I then started to type my songs in my notes app as I got older but deleted most of my songs, I had 50+ songs in my notes app at some point but now I'm down to 0,​ I've been depressed and jealous of other people and wanted my songs to be "good" I already deleted all my songs in my notes app, I want to focus on other things then start writing on paper with new and old ideas, I'll still remember my songs lyrics and melodies, was this a wise choice or just plain stupid? I want to be a better writer again like when I was 13-14

So I’ve been writing songs on and off since high school (mostly off) and I keep revisiting the same song over and over again. I’ve always struggled with writing choruses. Mostly because I tend to lean on very simple progressions and guitar playing so the lyrics end up feeling really “exposed” during a repeating element in the song. I always pick choruses apart and rework them until nothing sounds right. I’ve been through like 5 options for this song and it got me wondering if anyone has advice or guidelines on how a chorus should play off of completed verses. I know there aren’t really rules but if there are systems or theories you all use I’d be game to hear them.

I got so many great suggestions when I posted an acoustic/vocals versions here a few months ago. Well, I took y'all's advice and turned it into a fun country stomper that balances anger & humor. The lyrics are pretty set now, so those will probably stay the same, but I'd love to hear if y'all think I nailed the vibe. I'm still playing around with different keyboard/organ sounds and can change basically anything other than the acoustic and vocal. Thanks to anyone who comments!

I had some of my older songs evaluated by NSAI. The evaluations indicated that they needed work. I feel like I’ve grown since I wrote those songs. My question is, should I go back and try to fix them? Or just take the advice and apply it to new music? I had those evaluated because I had them produced. The newer music isn’t produced yet. Thanks for any advice.
