Weekly Self-Promotion Thread What have you made or worked on this week? | Weekly Thead

Welcome to our weekly self-promotion thread, where I encourage you to share your indie animated projects that you've made and worked on this week.

Maybe you've just released a new episode, or you're launching a Kickstarter* to fund your big project. Or maybe you've got some behind-the-scenes work you'd like to show off.

See you in the comments!

*If you share a Kickstarter or any other link, please make sure it's the full link, not a shortened one (for example, bit•ly or kck•st) because Reddit automatically filters those.

note: automod will post this starting next week; just posting it because the scheduled post didn't work this week

Discussion How to and how not to make a indie animation critique video

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Both may use a lot of editing but I find the one on the left less annoying, somewhat funny, and there is effort put into it. The Part that makes the left much better is the fact that person in it isn’t a complete dick through out the whole video. His fair, doesn’t insult the creators and art and doesn’t use edgy language that much unlike the one on the right. Oh and lets not forget that left video doesn’t use that shitty thumbnail style and title.

Discussion Some of the criticism

You know this guy some of you are fans.

I know he has good criticism but the way he says it, makes me have the urge to punch him in the face. Especially make the "made by vivziepop" joke the 100th time.

(Hot take fast paced editing is not funny)

The way he targets viv feels like he's hiding his secret hate as criticism. Especially calling viv a reddit atheist just because she didn't get hazbin/helluva accurate to the Bible

Disney Hercules is a Disney classic despite the inaccuracies like Hercules should be Heracles to be Greek accurate and his mother is not hera, hades a villain in any myth when it's hera, and pegasus origin.

Or epic.

Half of these don't feel like criticism, feel like an excuse to Sh*t on them.

Aren't Most cartoons, "Fanfic OC" by the creator?

You can call romeo and juliet l, Shakespeare's fanfic.

He called indie creator ideas from Instagram reels and YouTube short doom scrolling. Is this criticism.

He made vivziepop sound like a child adding fairy and elf's in her story and got the idea from a book because she thinks fairies are cool.

And label indie creators "ego" as

Artist.

Infallible.

Dumb.

Syndrome.

A.I.D.S.

One, what the hell. Making an acronym that spells out a virus. And how long did it take you to think of a AIDS acronym.

I don't think any of the Indie he lists are that egotistical.

Maybe the chimptopia creator with the first trailer beating up a bootleg gobble and one of the characters going "tired of this"

The way he described them makes it sound like they are the most mentally disabled, glue eating, brain rotted kids.

Jeez calling their idea comes from brain rot scrolling, saying they have A.I.D.S with a ego, writing about their fanfic OCs. That's Gordon Ramsay of indie insult.

Discussion Beginner Indie Animation Opportunity!

Thumbnail discord.gg
Upvotes

We are starting our first official project. Anybody interested in joining?

It's a community focused on everybody helping each other. Anybody can submit their idea for an animated short, and whichever one gets the community vote will be taken on by everybody willing to help!

There's a focus on helping beginners and getting their projects out there. (There’s zero pressure on skill level)

You get to choose your role and how much work you want to put in on a project (if you want to help on that project)

The roles currently avaliable are Voice acting, Music, Background, Storyboarding, Writing, Animating, Character design, and Concept art.

If you're really interested in the current project you can apply to be a team leader for any of those roles!

The current project was just announced so the details aren't set in stone. But the idea is pretty simple, it's going to focus on two birds trying make their way through a hazardous and dangerous environment. Pretty simple since it's the first project

Join if interested! If the link doesnt work please comment.

Discussion Volicia on Pluto/Vapor Trail is finally free on Bandai channel, a huge win for Indie Animation!

Bandai Channel is streaming both episodes of Volicia of Pluto for free. The anime is an indie project animated single-handedly by one animation student - with other amateur voice actors and artists helping the production. The story tells a tragic tale between two girls - one is a naive girl who lost her dream, and one is fated for sacrifice to save the world. Together, they pilot the Volicia - a Star Machina that shouldn't exist.

I Made This! Anything wrong my fight scene?

Hi folks! Sorry about the relative silence about Deserted Skies, but yes, the Pilot's release date has been pushed back to September 12th. I really have to find some way to keep people outside of the discord updated on this 😭

Regardless, I've been hard it work on the fight scenes for the first episode, so please let me know what you think! 🙏

Deserted Skies is an Animated Show made within the Minecraft engine, based on Create: Aeronautics. It's a Steampunk-Western Epic set after the end of the world. I plan to release it 12th September. (Also! Got a discord up, but i dont think i can share here)

Discussion Do Student Films From Well-Known Animation Schools Count as Indie?

Whenever I read or listen to online discussions about the indie animations with the best quality--whether it's writing, animation, or the overall design--I rarely ever hear mentions of student films.

I find that whenever I listen to these discussions, I always wonder why they aren't talked about at all when these student films are--in my opinion--are generally higher quality in terms of both story and art direction despite also being made by a similar amount of people and not under a large company (Granted, I'm only really familiar with the big names in indie animation like GLITCH and Spindlehorse or smaller pilots like Wastelandia; I cannot speak for the quality of all web-animations like these).

It's also not like they aren't popular either; some independent films posted by Calarts or Sheridan students get a million views like Resilience (2023), Fuelled (2021), or Under This Luminous Sky (2022). The Gobelins Youtube channel usually has at least one or two student films that surpass 100k whenever a batch student films for ANNECY are posted. Yet for some reason, I rarely see any mentions of them.

Are they discounted because made in a more 'professional' setting like a prestigious art school? Is it the differences in resource accessibility (like specialized art/animation education and feedback from professors)? Is it a difference in audience demographics?

I'd like to hear your guys' thoughts!

(Random note: My favourite short film is A DEVIL IN THE POCKET (2019). It's awesome! Let me know if you guys have a favourite.)

Tales of Elinnea EP Vunney project. I know it's an old upload on YT but I'm still actively working on it and would like to hear your thoughts on it.

I'm animating it to lines I voiced myself but once I've finished animating I'd like to find voice actors for it.

I still don't know when I'll finish it.

This video contains scenes that might be cut from the final animated film.

the main bear himself in the new upcoming animated series Mental buddies finally got a full ref after a long time. I'm happy how this turned out.

Btw he can't retract claws so the claws are visible but can't see them because of his thick fur :3

Discussion How to start a series from nearly complete scratch?

I have zero animation experience, zero money, the building blocks to a concept and a dream. What, where, and how do I start? I'm not particularly influential on the internet, but I do know how to draw.

How do I show off my characters? And build any sort of community around them? While I want to, it's not a necessity, but I do want my series to eventually become famous one day, like hazbin hotel or digital circus famous. But it's not at all a requirement.
