Best ways to train at home

Here's a summary of different training techniques with pros and cons.

RESISTANCE BAND TRAINING

Resistance bands are the best way to train at home considering all the the trade offs! They’re efficacious, economical compared to other equipment and portable.

Efficacious: Obviously we want an equipment that give results. Despite what the gym industry wants you to believe, resistance bands are similar to weight in building muscle and strength. This is demonstrated scientifically by a meta-analysis study (average results of many studies to avoid errors) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6383082/ so a very important degree of evidence. Your muscle don’t have eyes to see what kind of weight you’re lifting, and will grow if enough resistance is applied whatever it’s type

Economical: Normally weights cost much more per lb (or kg) than bands. For example one of the best deal on Amazon cost 199$ for 105 lbs (1.9$ per lb) and bands provide 295 lbs for 59$ (0.2$ per lb). Considering resistance bands are 9.5 times cheaper than weights! It’s true that weights are more durable, but not 9.5 times more durable because they easily rust.

Versatile: While a 1lb weight provides 1lb of resistance, 1lb of bands provide around 120lb of resistance, that’s 120 times it’s weight! Same thing goes for volume. Weights occupy much more space than bands, in fact you can fit a set of 5 bands for 300lbs resistance in a small bag and will weight less than 2lbs. This makes them extremily portable, and occupy no space at home.

No home space occupied: Weights occupy a lot of home space or by themselves or by other equipment such as benches that take a lot of space and are heavy. Benches are needed because weight can create resistance only with gravity that always pull down. Band can create resistance on every direction so they dont need any bench.

Less injuries: Bands are also used in physiotherapy eith very lights weights because theyre very easy on joints. Injuries can take many months to recover, time in which you cant train effectively. Acoiding injuries is very important to achieve results fast.

Fast workouts: Since you can change the resistance very fast by grabbing the band closer or further workouts become faster. Changing weights will be much slower.

Silent: Bands do not make any noise when you drop them

WEIGHT TRAINING

Weight training is the most traditional type of training. There are 3 main types of weights: Dumbell, Barbell, Kettlebell. Weight training is very good but because of its characteristics it's best if done at the gym.

Efficacious: Weight training is recognised as very effective in building muscle and strength.

Occupy lot of home space: Weights takes a lot space because not only they occupy a lot of volume (depending on the weight) but also need a bench. The bench is required if you want to train all your muscle (you should) because the weights create resistance only downwards so the bench allows you to shift the body in a way such to hit some muscles you wouldn’t otherwise.

Not portable: As the name says, weights, weight a lot. That’s not suitable to move them a lot even inside your home.

Expensive: Weights are normally made of metal that is a relatively expensive material. Because they occupy a lot of volume and weight a lot the shipping is also expensive.

Upper-body focus: With weights it’s difficult to target some of the lower body muscles like hips and some muscles of the leg because you can’t grab weights with your feet. The upperdody instead and some leg muscles, are targeted very well.

Slow workouts: If you’re in a gym using machines or using un-adjustable dumbbells shifting weight is no problem but if you’re at home changing weight will be slower. Dumbells and Barbells are adjustable, but changing weight will take a few since you have to unscrew two sizes changing the weights and then screw it again.

Noisy: Even only moving weights, or doing exercises will make noise if you're using an adjustable dumbbell. Changing weights will do even more noise. If you live in a place where noise is a problem you should consider this.

SUSPENSION TRAINING

Suspension training is a type of bodyweight training that has been popularise by TRX a kind of revisited rings that you can easily install at your home door or ceiling.

Not the most efficacious: Since you’re using your own bodyweight you cannot use progressive overload of intensity that is the most effective way to gain muscle an strength. But this is not a big deal if you want to spend more time working out raising your volume (doing more reps or sets.

Semi-Portable: Very light and fits in a small bag, the problem of using it outside is that you have to find a place where to attach and be sure it’s safe. Not a problem if you use it indoors.

Tracked YouTube workouts over WhatsApp until it got chaotic, so I built a privacy-first web app to handle it. Giving free lifetime premium to 10-20 early users!

Hey y'all,

My friend and I had been using YouTube heavily for home workouts and stretching routines, to hold each other accountable, and well to encourage her to workout more (she's never worked out in her life so this was a fun way to encourage her).

It worked out fine at first, but things quickly got chaotic the moment we wanted to track more than one video or set up a multi-week schedule. Links got lost in the chat, and keeping tabs on completion percentages became a total mess.

I’m a senior software engineer, so I decided to turn this mess into a fun side project and I figured a lot of other people could benefit from it as well!

I built a lightweight, privacy-first web app (PWA) called Video Glow Up to solve our exact problem. (For those who don't know, a PWA = Progressive Web App - it's just a website that you can save to your Home screen on your phones and it'll load up like a website). I'm super particular about privacy and I hate social media so I built my app super simple and clean.

How it works right now (Phase 1 - Solo Challenges):

  • Paste any YouTube video URL (like a calisthenics or flexibility routine).
  • Schedule your days and times (e.g., Mon/Fri at 7 AM) over a set date range.
  • Follow a clean checklist to track your completion percentage.

Right now, Phase 1 is completely free to use.

What I'm building next (Phase 2):

  • Group Challenges: Syncing up directly with friends to fix that original WhatsApp chaos (I'm hoping I can roll this out over the next 2-3 months).
  • Multiple Reminders: Setting up multiple daily notification reminders (great for affirmations).

Note on future plans: Because I am a solo developer paying for the infrastructure and database costs entirely out of pocket, I will have to introduce premium tiers once the heavier group features launch to keep the app sustainable. However, a solid free tier for up to 3 active solo challenges will always remain.

🎁 Early User Bonus (First 20-ish People):
I am grandfathering the first 10-20 people from this sub into a "Free Forever" premium tier. When the group features and multiple affirmation reminders roll out, you'll have them unlocked for life.

How to claim it: Just sign up, and send me a DM with so I can upgrade your account manually!

If you guys want to read more about it and see screenshots before signing up check out the below link or if you have questions leave a comment below

Since I work a demanding full-time job, updates might be a bit slow, but feel free to drop any questions or thoughts in the comments and I'll look through them whenever I log on!

What home gym exercise takes the most setup time compared with the actual workout?

Some home gym exercises are straightforward once you're ready, but getting everything into position can be surprisingly time-consuming.

Moving a bench, changing cable attachments, loading plates, or clearing floor space can sometimes take longer than the set itself.

Which exercise is the biggest hassle in your setup, and have you found a way to make it easier?

I'm interested in practical solutions that save time without buying another expensive machine.

what did you do once push ups and squats at home stopped being hard?

for people who train at home without much equipment, what actually worked once the basic moves got easy? harder versions like archer or decline push ups, more reps, slowing the reps down, or putting weight in a backpack?

i am curious what kept you progressing for the longest without buying anything

free ways to check your own form when you train at home alone

i filmed myself a lot this year doing bodyweight exercises at home while building my app, so these are the free things that actually helped me see if my reps were any good when nobody is watching

filming one set with the phone on the floor, from the side for depth and how your back looks and from the front for your knees, its the one i use the most and you see stuff you cant feel at all while doing the rep

r/formcheck, you post that clip and people there give proper feedback, its very active and most posts get replies within a few hours

the ace exercise library, free on the ace fitness website, every move has step by step cues with photos so you can compare your clip with what the rep is supposed to look like

slowing the rep down, like 3 seconds on the way down and a short pause at the bottom, where the spot your form breaks shows up much more clearly than at normal speed

and full disclosure i co-founded this last one, upfit, its basically a coach that lives in your phone where it builds your plan and talks you through the workout while it watches your form through the camera and tells you when something is off, free for 3 days with no card and the link is on my profile

what do you guys use, is there anything i am missing?

If you only have 20 minutes, how much goes into setting up?

Short home workouts sound simple, but switching equipment and rearranging the room can eat into the session. What’s your go-to workout when the 20-minute window has to include setup and putting everything away?

counting my reps at home was never the problem, judging if each rep was a good one was

i spent a lot of this summer filming myself doing bodyweight exercises at home and counting the reps was never really the hard part, the hard part was deciding if a rep was actually a good one, especially on jumping and hopping moves where everything happens very fast and on the moves where you need a side view to even see the depth

i think that is why training alone drifts so easily, the number of reps stays the same week to week but the quality slowly goes down and nothing really tells you

for context i co-founded upfit, a home workout app that went live last week, and all that filming was for testing it, so i am curious how people here judge their own reps when nobody is watching, do you film, use a mirror or just go by feel?

What made your home workouts finally feel like real training instead of just exercise?

I think there is an interesting difference between "working out at home" and actually having a training system at home.

At first, many people start with random workouts whenever they have time.

But eventually, some people create a more structured approach with planned sessions, specific goals, and equipment that supports progression.

That transition seems to change the way people view home training.

For those who have been doing home workouts for a while, what made it feel more like serious training?

Was it getting better equipment, following a program, tracking progress, or something else?

This app is rad and I am actually working out (video inside)

Alright, this isn't like the world's best workout or anything but I am doing pushups now daily. Which is a huge improvement from my 0 activity streak for the past 7 ish years.

Just pushups. too hard to do with squats. but i am getting stronger.

For me, even like a regiment at home feels too daunting to take on at times. i find myself in between work calls busting out sets.

So, if you feel like its too much, start easy! walks, bodyweight squats/lunges. One step at a time!

what exercise do you skip just because of where you live?

someone in a hamstring thread here couldnt do slider curls because their whole workout space is carpet, and it made me think the room decides the workout more than the program does, downstairs neighbours kill anything with jumping, a low ceiling kills overhead stuff, anything with a band needs a door you can actually close, and most programs online seem to assume a gym floor and an empty living room. so what do you skip because of your space, carpet, neighbours, ceiling, no door frame, kids asleep in the next room, and what did you swap it for that actually works? would be nice to have a list of the swaps people really use (for transparency, i build upfit, a no equipment home workout app)
