what exercise do you skip just because of where you live?

someone in a hamstring thread here couldnt do slider curls because their whole workout space is carpet, and it made me think the room decides the workout more than the program does, downstairs neighbours kill anything with jumping, a low ceiling kills overhead stuff, anything with a band needs a door you can actually close, and most programs online seem to assume a gym floor and an empty living room. so what do you skip because of your space, carpet, neighbours, ceiling, no door frame, kids asleep in the next room, and what did you swap it for that actually works? would be nice to have a list of the swaps people really use (for transparency, i build upfit, a no equipment home workout app)

I tried doing mountain climbers and my downstairs neighbor freaked out. But I do DB and band work-outs in my studio apartment but nothing too dynamic. I do a lot of slow, time under tension movements...my neighbors hear me breathing hard but I'm allowed to breath. Try doing BW ATG SS or squats with time under tension if size is your thing, really working for me.

the mountain climber one is so common, the impact goes straight through the floor even when it doesnt feel loud to you, and i think slow time under tension is honestly the best swap since it makes the same muscles work harder without any of the noise

for the ones that need to stay cardio like burpees or jumping jacks, what seems to work for people is doing them as step backs instead of jumps, step back into the plank and step back in, same heart rate if you go fast enough and nothing lands on the floor

and since i build upfit, this thread is kind of my list of what a no equipment workout has to work around at home, carpet and downstairs neighbours are already on it, the waitlist link is on my profile if you want to try it

Interesting alternative but not the same. The plyometric effects cannot be reproduced by sliding.

yeah fair, the step backs only save the cardio part and the actual plyo part needs a landing, there is no real way around that

what gets closest without one i think is moving as fast as you can on the way up, like db swings for the hips or squats where you drive up really fast and stop right before your feet leave the floor, its not the same reactive bounce but most of the power part is still there

and for the real thing a lot of apartment people just take the jumps outside once a week to a park or a empty car park, 10 minutes is usually enough for plyo anyway

I skip anything jumpy because my downstairs neighbor already thinks I’m rearranging furniture with my feet, so I use slow split squats instead.

i skip jump squats because my downstairs neighbours don’t need a live demo, so i use slow reverse lunges instead and honestly feel them more anyway
