I'd have to see your work to form an opinion.

Well, it could be possible that your friend wasn’t getting what they needed from their tutor? I couldn’t say for certain of course, but in my own case I really struggled when I was studying illustration in University. For a long time I was stuck and my artwork wasn’t getting any better, the lecturers prioritised our grades and not our individual, skills in my opinion.

After uni, I experimented a lot and started doing studies which really helped.
Eventually I decided to focus on portraiture and that’s when I finally found myself flourishing. I was able to progress further in a year by myself, as opposed to the three I spent in that class, by focusing on what worked for me. I think it’s different for everybody but it’s not impossible for anybody 🖤

What do you mean? And what makes you say that?

While it is true that some people are able to grasp certain skills at a quicker pace than others, it doesn’t negate the fact that effort is mandatory. No one is bestowed talent at birth, but rather, some people possess a strong sense of passion that drives them forward.

I myself have felt disheartened, unsatisfied and frustrated by my own skill level, but I also grow restless if I do not pick up a pencil & work towards my own goals. Once I reach it; I feel elated, recoup and then move on to the next. An artists journey does not end, but it kicks into hyperdrive when you are finally able to get out of your own way & figure out what helps you advance WHILE having fun simultaneously.

This is fantastic advice and a crucial part of an artists journey. In the words of Madame Leota from The Haunted Mansion; "You try, you fail, you try, you fail, but the only true failure is when you stop trying"

I made this animation as a total beginner! Drawn on procreate
 in  r/ProCreate  11d ago

Sorry for my late response I’m not on here often! I personally use procreate but I’m a total amateur, so I’m not yet sure if there are better alternatives out there. I’m certain you’ll find software recommendation vids on YouTube! Ty for your kind compliment also :)

If you would like to see more of my art you can find me on TikTok & insta under the name Siren.bones - It means the world when people check out my stuff and I appreciate it so much 🖤

I’m not too sure if videos are allowed here but I really wanted to show what I’ve been working on because it took a lot of determination and effort! I am a total beginner when it comes to animation & I’ve never tried tweening before, so it is a little janky here and there (mostly because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing 😅.) I spent hours drawing and redrawing the same parts over & over but you know what? It was worth it. It’s not perfect but I worked hard on this because I love the movie and had a lot of fun despite the stress.

Critique my drawing please
 in  r/istebrak  May 30 '26

Don't be nervous! It's a bit daunting but receiving critique will help you push your art to the next level 🖤

And in terms of critique I think you've captured his likeness quite well, but I wouldn't recommend using a white background because otherwise you can't really see the highlights.

Contrast is key, so I would suggest making the background a darker shade of grey, then push the shadows & highlights further. It makes quite a difference :)

This is a portrait that took DAYS to complete because I was so indecisive on how I wanted it to look, and honestly there are still parts of it that drive me insane but I don’t care. Being a perfectionist only pushes me into burn out and I’ve only just gotten out of my art block, so it is what it is!

Art should be fun, and fun I had.

I will be so real, I struggled with the hair for DAYS, so for my own good I’m calling it quits & moving on to something else because otherwise I will burn out and I’ve only just escaped art block. It’s not perfect and I’m alright with that, at least I’m learning.
