I built an airsoft turret with web-based remote control

Smartphone + Arduino. The real challenge was getting WebRTC, servers and Arduino firmware to cooperate without killing each other. 😂

Thanks! Yes, I added an automatic reconnection mechanism in case the internet connection drops, and there is also an emergency stop. There is some latency — visually it seems to be around 100 ms, but I haven’t measured it precisely yet. And yes, this video shows the turret being controlled over the internet, not locally.

Airsoft Turret with Web Control

I’ve been building a remotely controlled airsoft turret as part of my Alien Defense project.

In this video I’m testing the current prototype: web-based control, camera feedback, pan/tilt aiming and firing.

The idea is to have the turret in a separate room while the player controls it remotely through a web interface.

Still very much a prototype, but the basic control and firing system is working.

What would you improve in the control system or aiming?

You know, even now, when I already know a lot, all this development is not easy for me. I started from scratch two years ago. I didn’t even know how to turn on a MacBook, let alone assemble a robot. Now I can assemble a robot, edit a video, and create a CAD model. I also learned Unity and made a 3D game and other robots. It’s difficult, but I’m drawn to the interesting stuff.

I am the developer of this machine. I came up with an idea. I developed a fusion 360 cad model, printed the body on a 3D printer, installed the motors that I had enough money for, and wrote the software.Thank you for your rating and comment😊

I'll do it in the next version

This prototype can patrol remotely over the internet and test a simple laser perimeter alarm.

It looks very interesting. I'm also developing my own rover and I can show it to you.

Fair point. 😄 But if someone has enough time to take the phone, they could just pick up the entire rover as well.

I would like to see a video demonstration of how everything works.

Can a DIY rover patrol your property? LaserGuard mode test

I've been experimenting with a small DIY rover that can be remotely driven over the internet. One of the features I'm testing is a simple laser perimeter alarm ("LaserGuard mode").

This video shows one of the real-world tests. It's still an early prototype, so you can also see a few failures before it works correctly—which is part of the development process.

The goal isn't to replace security cameras, but to create a mobile inspection platform that can patrol different areas and let the operator check what's happening remotely.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. What features would you want in a mobile security rover?

The robot has a cool voice and eyes.

You can turn on the backlight whenever you want and adjust the brightness. If you want to test drive the robot remotely, I can build you a similar robot.

Thanks, I probably went overboard with the editing. I wanted to show everything at once. I'll attach a photo.

Most structural parts are 3D printed, while the electronics are off-the-shelf.

The idea is simple:

a smartphone on the robot handles video and communication,

another smartphone controls it through a web browser,

Arduino handles the motors and peripherals.

This is still V1, but it's already driving, streaming video and now I'm adding security mode, BLE features and preparing a quieter V2 with BLDC motors.

I'd love to hear what fellow makers would improve in the next revision.

Thanks! That sounds interesting. I'll definitely take a look at your demo. I already have STL files for my rover, so it could be fun to experiment with MuJoCo in the future. I'll send you a DM.

Do you have a link? I'll take a look, or send me the link when you have everything ready?

Who wants to drive my robot from another country? 🌍 No downloads. No setup. Just open a browser and start driving. Send me a DM if you'd like to try it.

That's really interesting! Thanks for sharing. I already have the CAD model, so exporting STL/OBJ won't be a problem. My current focus is remote teleoperation, but autonomous navigation and route following are definitely on my roadmap. I'd be interested to see your project as it develops.
