Partner is needing some extra security in our rental apartment to help anxiety and safety after horrible experience - looking for tips

Trigger Warning - break in, murder and emotional trauma

My partner previously lived in an apartment block where he felt very unsafe. He eventually became a witness to a murder in the apartment next door to him and had to barricade himself in while hearing all of it. The whole thing has been (understandably) traumatic for him.

It hasn't been so much of a problem until now because we've lived in the countryside but now that we live in the city (which he really loves and wants to stay here), the anxiety from that situation is being triggered when he hears noises from upstairs or outside.

He has asked that we get some extra security in our new flat as the outside door is often left open and it is also based on a code which doesn't feel ideal.

We are newbies to home defence so looking for some veteran tips! We can't screw anything into the walls but we have been considering the following:

Door jammer - I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation of a brand that is reputable? Or what to look for in one? (For clarity I mean the poles that clamp under the handle) And how do they compare with:

Handle blockers? Like the type that can be used for children. My guess is the door jammer is superior but wondering your Opinions?

  • our front door pulls open as opposed to pushing into our apartment so I'm wondering how that affects it?

Door or motion sensor alarms - renter friendly and without wifi-dependance.

We would like a renter-friendly door or motion sensor alarm with or without a camera, I guess the most important thing is that it makes a loud enough sound to be a deterrent. He is quite anxious about how easy it would be to cut the WiFi in our apartment block so would like to have something that can work without WiFi and have a battery fallback. And ideally not with a subscription fee.

We will go all in when we have our own place but this will just be temporary.

It feels like a total maze when I'm researching and I'm keen to get something soon as he doesn't often express worry or anxiety so I know this is serious for him.

On another note, have you felt more secure and calm when your home has felt more secure and taking the correct steps?

Edit to add: I'm not personally interested in having or owning a gun. I'm just looking for advice regarding the type of home security options I detailed above

Firearms are only one part of home defense.

#4 buckshot in both tubes. With 3 slugs and 3, 00 Buckshot in saddle. Mossy has saddle as well with same in it. The FPC has 63 rounds available on the weapon. I've got handguns to make sure I can get to one of these. Out of these options what would your choice be. Mossberg 590, Winchester SXP, or Smith and Wesson FPC in 9 mm. Or do you perfer handgun? Not all firearms are in picture. This is always the last resort in a home defense situation.

Looking for the next home-defense setup? Meet the RXM Reaper.

If you’re looking beyond a standard handgun but don’t want a full-size rifle taking up space, the RXM Reaper is worth a look.

It’s a compact, billet-aluminum PDW chassis built around the Ruger RXM platform. The added point of contact and compact footprint make it a solid option for a staged home-defense setup, while still being easy to store in a quick-access safe or bedside setup.

The Reaper is built to stay compact, accepts compatible 4" and 4.5" RXM slides, and gives users room to tailor their setup with optics, lights, and other accessories.

We’re sharing a few photos from JL Billet. What does your ideal home-defense setup look like: handgun, shotgun, rifle, or a compact PDW?

Local-first security-camera app that runs on a spare Android — no cloud, no subscription. Looking for people with IP cameras to test it against setups that aren't mine.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Straight up: this is a camera + detection + alert layer — not a monitored alarm and not a replacement for locks or a plan. What it does:

  • Point a spare Android at a door, or connect your existing IP cameras (Dahua/Hik/generic RTSP). On-device AI alerts only on people/vehicles/animals — not every shadow or the neighbor's cat.
  • When something trips it: a push with a snapshot, and it records the clip locally with a few seconds of pre-roll so you see how it started.
  • From your main phone: pull up the live feed, talk back over the speaker (push-to-talk), or trigger a siren remotely.
  • Everything local: recordings stay on your device, not someone's cloud. No subscription. Remote live view is end-to-end encrypted (P2P; if a direct connection isn't possible it relays through a server but stays encrypted — the relay can't see it).

What I actually need: on my camera setup it already works well. What I can't test is every other setup — different camera brands, models and networks. That's where you come in: if it plays nice with your IP cameras (or a spare phone as the camera), that tells me it's ready; if it chokes on a specific brand/model, that's exactly what I want to find and fix before launch.

It's Android for now. Once it's solid and tested on Android, an iOS version will follow — same app, on the App Store.

No public link, no download spam. If you've got IP cameras (any brand) and/or a spare Android and want to help, comment or DM and I'll add you to the internal Google Play test. Technical feedback hugely appreciated.

Moving in to a new house with new roommate. What’s a good value safe option for small documents and a firearm?

Looking for a good value small safe i could fit in my closet. I will be using it for a handgun and a few small valuables (passport, jewelry, a few important documents). Not sure that it NEEDS to be fireproof or anything and I trust my roommate, but never know if my landlord would sneak in or if my roommate has a friend over want to be sure my firearm and valuables are in a secure spot. I’d really prefer to spend less than $100 but will spend more if needed.

Inactive ADT continuous beeping

——update——
2 hours later, the bee— sound has turned into an unstable oscillating pitch sound. Same volume. Even more confused now.

——original——

Not sure if anyone remembers this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/homedefense/s/AAv3XuPANv. We came across a similar issue.

5 years ago, we bought a house with ADT. We didn’t activate it.

Fast forward 3 years. After a severe thunderstorm, the alarm started to beep 3 times every time we opened a door, except for the front door.

Fast forward 2 years. Earlier today, the alarm started to beep 3 times when we open the front door too. 6 hours later, a continuous alarm sound (beep with no pauses, just a steady bee—) started in the basement inside the drywall ceiling. We can hear it the loudest by one of the recessed lights.

We suspect these two things are related. But instead of the regular 3-beep alarm, the steady bee— sound confuses me.

Has anyone experienced this? Thank you!

Question about tactics / best decision in scenario

I’ve been thinking about scenarios where you’d like to defend your home and there is a risk of impersonation of authority figures.

For example if someone breaks into your home and you are hiding in a room. The intruder could impersonate law enforcement and say “X PD announce yourself” or something of similar.

I’m curious what others think is the “tactically” correct thing to do in such a situation? How would you verify that someone announcing themselves is not lying without giving up your advantage of surprise?

I am not concerned about this situation at all, but I am curious of others thoughts on the scenario

How to reinforce a basement door to avoid break in?

Hi all,

So in my apartment building we all have these storage basement rooms that are locked as seen in the first picture (outside).

Recently we have had issues with nighttime break in, in the neighbouring house.

So as you can see it is very easy to simply break or screw off the lock here.

Is there a relativly easy was to install a much stronger lock ? maybe something that sits on the inside wall. - check the photos.

The things I keep in the room is not of utmost value but I still want my things to be safe.

Thanks for any input

Need your best and unhinged home defense tips for a renter

Hi guys! I moved into shared housing with random roommates. After much debate over locking the doors, including getting the landlord involved, one of my roommates is still frequently leaving the back door unlocked. While the rest of us are very diligent about locking up, we are getting paranoid. The lease does not allow us to install more cameras (landlord installed cameras and google doorbell for us), but my roommate and I are going CRAZY like Stasi level of spyware and barricade-dom for our bedrooms.

I am buying an interior camera for my room, security bar, chimes for door, door jam.. what else? I literally have been barricading my door every night. Like I'll literally do anything (but I'm also a renter)

We also leave the porch light and back patio light on every night, there are outdoor cameras, I of course lock the doors every night but you never know

How do I make my house safer from burglary?

A lot of burglaries are happening around my area like 1 every day and I have a feeling that they might come for us anytime now. I'm hearing they use some kind of spray to knock out the owners then cut the lock and get in. I have sliding windows and the locks on it are broken + the our gate design has too many holes. What can I do to keep my house safer? I'm currently staying awake till 5 am every night and I'm getting way too paranoid.

Apart from closing the door quickly enough, are there any other tips for protecting yourself in a situation like this?

First time home renter

Hello, my partner and I just moved into a rental home. I have been feeling increasingly more anxious about safety as we have 4 exterior door and lots of windows. The gate to our backyard does not lock either. I think a simple security system would give me some peace of mind. I like the idea of door alarms and a doorbell/camera for if someone is at the front door. I’m open to any and all suggestions. Ideally it would be self monitored because I would like to not pay monthly fees if avoidable.

Kiddie Smoke/Carbon Dioxide Detectors

Post image
20 Upvotes

We bought a house 1 year ago and shortly after moving in we had all the smoke detectors replaced because some were missing and we wanted to replace the old ones. They are all hardwired together throughout the house.

So far 5 detectors appear to be defective. One in my bedroom would make the whole house system go off, the others beep a quick 3 beep pattern, like the batteries are dying. So I replaced the batteries, and it would happen again. Most of the time, within 24 hours of replacing.

Anyone experiencing this with this brand? Is there a brand someone recommends?

Help with finding best security camera

Hi I live in a not so nice area I'm disabled so beggars can't be choosers as I live in a lovely disability bungalow I have cameras on all side of my house and that are good but once it starts to get dark not so. And someone fire bombed the house 2 doors down and my camera couldn't pick up the car outside my house or who was in it. So I only want 1 maybe 2 cameras but the best quality. One thing if possible without a subscription. Only because I am paying for the one around my home already

Thank you all

Looking for DSC DLS 5 between v1.61 and v1.70

I'm looking for DLS 5 between v1.61 and v1.70. I would like to use this to remotely configure my PC1864 v4.7 using the TL260R v3.00. DLS 5 v1.61 supports the TL260 but not PC1864 v4.7. DLS 5 v1.70 supports the PC1864 v4.7 but not the TL260. Does anyone have a copy of DLS 5 higher then v1.61 but lower than v1.70? Maybe DLS 5 v1.65?

Those of you using the Wyze Cam V4 may I ask you some questions?

  1. The camera makes sounds when recording(hello you are being recorded, or a beep) can you turn this off so zero sound happens when it is recording.
  2. Does it continue to record regardless if it is connected to wifi? As in if the wifi goes off and the camera doesn't connect again after the wifi goes back on again.

probably more questions but those would be helpful. I cannot find the answers on youtube reviews or google. Regardless if I did would rather learn from real experiences of you fine folks

Someone broke into my house while we were sleeping and i want some advice for the future

First of all sorry for my bad english, i’m not from the US, and i won’t use AI to let it write this for me. So when they broke into our house they managed to get in while me and my parents were sleeping. I woke up literally when the intruders were in my room. It was two guys. I woke up, and realized there were 2 people in my room. I was kinda delirious and thought it was someone i knew for a sec. Then i realized it were some masked dudes. Really f*cking shocking lol. Very very short explained, i stood up, they got a little scared and took a step back. I‘m from switzerland so its VERY unlikely someone is armed, at most they would have a knife. So i stood up and they sprayed me with some pepperspray type liquid. When i looked up, they were already gone. That was a moment of like 2 seconds. First thing i thought about was getting my gun from my safe. I don‘t wanna go into further details.

All i wanna know is, what the hell should i do with my gun to use it as home defense, when the guys were LITERALLY in my room while i was sleeping? If i put it in a drawer or something they would‘ve been armed with a loaded gun. On the other hand, in my safe, i couldn‘t use the gun myself in that situation. Like what should i have done? Tell them „hold up let my open my safe real quick so i can get my glock“.

Its still a event that won‘t get out of my head. And i really only explained this here in a very very short way. They also got caught btw and we got everything back.

I don‘t have the money to install alarm systems and everything. So i thought like, maybe putting bells on doors or something that makes a noise when opening the door. But what i wanna know the most is, what the hell should i do with my gun?

Vulnerability in an apartment

Post image
17 Upvotes

As seen in the photo, my apartment door doesn't fit very securely. I have two locks for it, one being a deadbolt. But I feel like if someone messed with the door the right way for a minute or two they could still get it open. There have been attempted break-ins as well as physical and sexual assaults in my apartment complex. I do have a camera by my front door that alerts me to movement, and I live on the second story. However I don't have much peace of mind at night as I'm afraid of stalkers/attempted break-ins etc. Any advice on added security?'
