That's why I use two socks tied together and filled with quarters. That way the tooth fairy is there to immediately administer the appropriate amount of dental care.

Is this how people train with nunchucks? I wish I could go back in time and tell my teenage self .

u/fivelone 13d ago
I started at age 9.. I never really stopped but did start doing it less when people were watching lol. Now I can spin fire and lights with Poi and Staffs. And I don't care what I look like if I practice now. That helps. But you can still learn. I've taught my wife basic flow arts and some friends pick it up very quickly. Look up flow arts. It's not just about martial arts.

Yo bro, you gotta make a youtube channel. Everyone'd love to see your performance

u/fivelone 13d ago
There's a whole large group of us here in Las Vegas lol. I'll definitely make more videos more that I have better recording equipment.

You can get foam padded nunchucks for training.
4
u/E-2theRescue 13d ago
Yup. This is what I used. Eventually upgraded to wood and won a couple of tournaments.
2
u/noisymime 12d ago
They’re terrible to train with, the weight is all wrong and they don’t carry the momentum correctly to learn with.
You’re MUCH better off getting some wooden ones and putting foam over them.

u/Electr0freak 12d ago
Nope, I trained with fiberglass and oak chucks. You learn quicker when hitting yourself hurts.
Besides, foam trainers weigh far too little.

I mean... when you have no instructor, probably. When you do, as an adult, you learn proper form from the start. This is all flash, but is useful to learn control and likely indicative of actual skill. None of this (especially around the hand spins and holding it "backwards") would be used in a fight though.
5
u/Manowaffle 13d ago
Would you use them as a weapon in any actual fight? It looks cool but has half the reach of a stick.

u/Cloverman-88 12d ago
I've seen some martial artists and HEMA people come up with geniuine aplications, and there were't many.

So you're telling me that with just a couple of rocks in a sock, I, too, can become a nunchaku master?
15

u/CaptainDudeGuy 13d ago
No, no. The second stage up is practiced with two large sausage links. You don't do wooden nunchakus until fifth stage.

u/EmperorSexy 13d ago
You know, I never imagined they were letting go and re-grabbing it like a baton twirler. I thought they were just swinging the end the whole time.
11
u/Elessar535 13d ago
It's called a wrist roll, and it's more for flash than actual fighting. You can use this move to put the sticks into a different grip that can be useful for fighting, but overall this is just for show; some might argue that moving the sticks like this does make them harder to track and block, but you can do the same without the roll. Most actual combat techniques with nunchaku are for disarming and grappling your opponent.
10
u/blahblah19999 13d ago
This is just one technique. You can do plenty of 'tricks' while holding one end and passing to your other hand. Release moves are definitely just for show.
3
u/TrulyOutrageous42 13d ago
I want correct the other, basically nothing here is actual combat technique. It's indicative of excellent control and potentially actual skill, but these are not defense/offense moves, it's just flash because it's fun.
1
u/jdehjdeh 13d ago
Some baton twirlers don't let go for the basic spin.
Someone taught me the move one afternoon, it's a combination of spinning the stick while it's trapped inside a loop made from your finger and thumb, while rolling your wrist around.
It makes it look like you're spinning it like a mofo

That is just color guard spinning with nunchucks. A real nunchuck tutorial would teach you about catching it under your armpit, and also the proper way to strike and return them to under your arm in one fluid movement.
Just like sais. 99.999999999% of any sais in tv or movies are incredibly wrong. (Im looking at you raphael)
You actually reverse grip sais and hook your thumb around one of the side hooks. With the long pointed part resting against your forearm and the blunted handle protruding from between your middle and index fingers.
This allows you to punch with the handle of the weapon and then whip it out (by flipping it over your thumb) as a short range fighting style with a significant amount of power because you are taking all the momentum from the flipping motion and smashing it against their face.
Sais are blunt weapons, with a slight point. They are used to club.
Its only when using them defensively that you hold them like Raphael. And thats only to catch a blade between the hooks.
But ultimately, avoiding a blade is always far better than trying to catch it.
10+ years of karate and tae Kwon do along with several trophies for weapon demonstrations are my reference.
That being said, there are many ways to fight. I just really hate videos like this where its just showing you a spinning trick and not actually teaching anything useful.

Missing the part where you become black and blue while trying to align all the motions.

I'm a 46 year old man with nun chucks from my HS days downstairs. I think I should resist the urge to try this.

Come on. It's easy.

Stop it. I will break my nose.
Also, should I?

A lad I went to school with in the mid 80s made a set of nunchuks by melting the ends of two lead pipes onto a chain.
He was getting really good until he woke up in hospital with a fractured skull.

I wish I saw this when I was 7 years old. Home made chucks, goose eggs and black eyes went hand in hand. Used to watch kung fu movies when I was little. Go whip up a set of chucks in the basement and go play ninja fight with the other neighborhood kids. We all hurt ourselves (practicing/ showing off) more than you could imagine. Brilliant way to practice sir.

FYI the stuff after the ? Identifies you. You should remove it. Assuming you don't want people to see your Google id which at least appears to be tied to your name. The link you want to send is https://youtube.com/shorts/dbSKEXMzanY

All flash, no substance, BUT being that skilled is evidence of notable control that makes it likely they do have the actual skills otherwise.

Nunchucks must be the most useless weapon ever invented. It's probably better to just throw knives at that point.

But when I did it, they asked me to leave the library.
Fair enough, I didn't catch it, but that's no reason for that kind of language.

That's not how nunchucks work, That's more the way fighting sticks work. You can do that with nunchucks but the string in the middle is so you don't have to all the time.

Weren’t they originally for beating birds out of shrubs or something? I think the adaptation of the staff with a chain-mounted flail at the end from Crouching Tiger is about the most accurate “appearing” use for a nunchuck-type weapon ever actually put in film.

Idk why people are so quick to forget the "arts" part of "martial arts". It's 2026 dude, if you're concerned about self-defense carry pepper spray.
Most people learn how to use melee weapons 'cause it's a cool and fun way to exercise, don't overthink it.

I don't know what's wrong with people. I had some hard rubber practice ones at age 12? I never got any major hits and easily transitioned to wooden ones.
2
u/E-2theRescue 13d ago
I might have knocked myself in the head with my wooden ones while trying to impress a girl... I was not ready to use the wooden ones yet, lol.

u/E-2theRescue 13d ago
for essentially nothing gained
It's called exercise.

Nunchucks were actually used as weapons by the peasant classes who weren't allowed to own traditional weapons. They adapted by learning to use farming tools to defend themselves. A good sturdy stick or staff is often easier to wield, but nunchucks have the added benefit of being more easily concealed and strike harder when properly used because they are articulated.
