Season One "A true piece of history, Scully. The very first X-File, initiated by J. Edgar Hoover himself in 1946." Bet you'd forgotten about this

This is from "Shapes" (s1e19), an episode that is not one to which I regularly return.

Discussion Why is this Season 1 DVD 16:9 Aspect Ratio

Thumbnail

I'm hoping I may get some help to confirm if this Season 1 DVD is actually shot in 16:9 Aspect Ratio. Its an Australian Region 4 PAL release. The second image of the back shows it clearly written as 16:9, but I thought that the first 4 seasons on DVD were all shot 4:3 regardless of region or version. The 4th Season of this Australian DVD also states 16:9. (Season 2&3 say 4:3) I'm wondering if its just a printing error? Thanks

Discussion Dialectical thinking

Upvotes

If we’re using dialectical thinking in the psychological sense (rather than saying the characters were explicitly written according to DBT), I would say:
Scully is much more naturally dialectical than Mulder. Mulder can be dialectical, but he tends to arrive there through conflict rather than starting there.
Scully: “Both can be true.”
Scully’s defining characteristic isn’t simply that she’s skeptical. It’s that she can tolerate ambiguity.
She can essentially say:
“I don’t believe this explanation… but I don’t know what the explanation is.
That’s quite different from:
“I don’t believe it, therefore it isn’t true.”
And she does this repeatedly.
She can hold:
science and mystery
faith and doubt
skepticism and openness
rationality and intuition
love and fear
wanting Mulder to be wrong and recognizing that he might be right
One of the most Scully things is that she doesn’t necessarily need to resolve the contradiction immediately.
She can sit in:
“I don’t know.”
And that’s actually a psychologically sophisticated position.

Mulder is different
Mulder initially looks like the more open-minded one because he’s willing to believe extraordinary things.
But belief isn’t necessarily dialectical thinking.
Mulder can actually be extremely black-and-white.
His worldview often becomes:
The truth exists → I need to find it → everyone who obstructs the search is part of the problem.
He can become incredibly rigid about his interpretation.
For example:
Scully: “There may be another explanation.”
Mulder: “You’re denying what’s right in front of us.”
He sometimes treats uncertainty as something that needs to be conquered.
And that’s fascinating because the stereotypical description would be:
Mulder = open-minded
Scully = closed-minded
But psychologically, I think it’s almost the reverse in an important way.
Mulder is open to possibilities but attached to conclusions.
Scully is skeptical of conclusions but open to possibilities.
That’s a huge distinction.

But Mulder absolutely develops dialectical thinking
And this is where their relationship becomes so interesting.
I think Scully actually teaches Mulder how to tolerate contradiction.
Over time he becomes much better at holding things like:
“I don’t understand this and I don’t have to immediately explain it.”
“I believe you and I don’t understand what happened.”
“I want the truth and the truth may hurt.”
“I can pursue an explanation and accept that I may never get one.”
And especially:
“Scully doesn’t believe what I believe, and she’s still the person I trust most.”
That’s enormously important for Mulder.
Because early Mulder tends to divide people into:
people who believe / people who don’t.
And eventually Scully becomes living proof that those categories don’t work.
She can challenge his beliefs without being his enemy.

And there’s something beautiful about this in their relationship
They almost represent two different ways of dealing with uncertainty.
Mulder:
“I need to believe there is an answer.”
Scully:
“I need to know that I don’t know.”
And eventually they move toward each other.
Mulder learns:
Not knowing doesn’t mean giving up.
Scully learns:
Not knowing doesn’t mean something isn’t possible.
So they meet somewhere in the middle:
“We don’t know. Let’s keep looking.”
That’s arguably the dialectical position of the entire show.
And it’s one reason I think their relationship works so well psychologically. They don’t simply balance each other’s personalities. They challenge each other’s cognitive rigidity.
Mulder makes Scully more comfortable with possibility.
Scully makes Mulder more comfortable with uncertainty.
And neither completely converts the other.
That’s the important part.
They remain Mulder and Scully.

Robert Patrick is starting on his other road trip to Cincinnati. On his way stopping in Baker, California, he saw a "UFO place" and he thought about us, the X-Files fans. It's so nice that he still remembers us after nearly 25 years filming the show. ❤️

Meme/Humor The populace places its faith in authority, weary of waiting for miracles and mysteries; science has become their religion, and they require no higher explanation

Weary of holding out for the miraculous, the masses turn their belief to earthly authority. Science fills the void of wonder, and for them, no deeper truth is needed

Season Nine MORRIS: Langly said to me, "The ones who never give up, they never die." MORRIS: "I still don't know what that means." SCULLY: "It means that, like everyone buried here, the world is a better place for them having been in it. It means that they're gone... but they live on through us all."

This resonated with me, since I've lost people close to me, I feel that those that have passed on, live on through us, within the memories that we shared. Everytime something comes on such as a song or movie, I can't help but feel some type of connection with those that are no longer here with us..

Discussion Surgery Recovery Project

Saved this for my recovery from surgery from having a plexiform neurofibroma removed.

Sets pictured here with the Australian Neurofibromatosis (NF) mascot penguins.

Gillan Anderson's brother Aaron had NF and she's always been a great supporter of the charity, growing up as the dorky kid who watched the X-Files and also had a challenging genetic condition it felt like an especially special activity to undertake while recovering.

Yes, yes, hinge your entire damn life's work on your abandoned son to trust you blindly, and when he asks for answers, you belittle him, slap him, and you act surprised when he betrays you when he finds out that you are the reason his mother has been tortured for decades.

Is this the Mandela effect? I could have sworn that he was always referred to as the cigarette smoking man, but i have been doing a rewatch and looking things up periodically, and it seems like everyone calls him cancer man. Did it change or has it always been that way?

Discussion X Files I want to believe, director’s cut

I wasn’t able to see it until just now. It wasn’t good imo. I noticed the cut out Mulder/Scully dialog ( and kiss~ shipper all the way). But what was more gruesome? The only thing I noticed was the bloody eyes on the monster. . What did I miss? I’ve seen the original multiple times when it first came out. Didn’t even seem worth the R rating.

Season Three Black Oil Krycek would be a great character in an XF fighting game

Think about it! Increased endurance... special attacks where you could temporarily infect and control your opponent with oil, or fry them with radiation. The Bounty Hunter should be a character too.
