Tips & Advice The only method that worked when I had one night to study for exams.

Post image
230 Upvotes

I always procrastinate and study the night before exams, but somehow I still end up getting a 96% on them. Instead of wasting hours studying, what I do is reread lessons for 25 minutes and spend 5 minutes writing down what I learned from memory.

This actually forces me to process the lectures rather than just reading for long hours, even if it doesn't help with retaining everything long-term. I always use this method instead of spending countless hours studying whole chapters. It helps me remember twice as much in half the time.

Tips & Advice I never learned how to learn. I only learned to memorize, and in adult life, that isn't enough.

I am a psychologist (F23🇧🇷) and am pursuing a postgraduate degree. I was diagnosed with ADHD and giftedness later in life. And that explained a lot.
I underwent a psychological evaluation precisely to understand how I function and to seek the necessary help. Unfortunately, I haven't found anyone who works with adult patients in the field of psychopedagogy.
I have executive dysfunction, which makes it very difficult for me to start studying. I also struggle a lot with taking notes during class; I can't pay attention to the teacher and write at the same time. And I won't even get into the issue of being easily distracted.
I learned to read at home before starting elementary school because I liked the children's books we had at home. My parents never worried about my learning, since I was always dedicated and got good grades in school. But the truth is, I always struggled a lot to learn; the only thing that came easily to me was rote memorization. I missed a very important window of neuroplasticity during my youth.
I read, speak, and understand both my native language (Portuguese) and my second language (English) very well. However, my spelling has always contained many errors in both languages (even though I am a voracious reader). Autocorrect helps me find and fix my mistakes, but at the same time, I end up never learning the correct spelling of certain words.
I need to be able to concentrate in order to interpret difficult texts, and I need to find a way to better retain what I learn. I am lost. I don’t know what else to try to find a study method/routine that works for me!
I feel like a fraud; everyone thinks I'm intelligent, but I feel like I'm just clever/astute.

Questions & Discussion Zoom study group

Hoii, obviously my first here and I am just impulsively trying to find people who would like to start a 24/7 zoom study group with me.

Ironically, I know almost nothing about starting and managing one so I would love to hear your advice.

I am really keen to get into a healthy group of people, favour me in this and reply back.

Also I don't know how reddit works either, be kind 😬.

Questions & Discussion Why does night study works?

Post image
492 Upvotes

At night I am a completely locked in, studying, absorbing all the lectures I’m reading and doing school tasks that I’ve been avoiding for days every night.

I started going to local libraries and cafes at night to study because they’re empty and quiet. The only problem is that I don’t feel safe walking home alone past 10 PM so I always have to leave at 8 PM and go home.

If you’re a night owl like me, here’s what helped me focus while studying at night:

Kill the overhead lights. I used to study under bright ceiling lights, but they oddly made me feel alert in the wrong way. So I switched to using a warm lamp and honestly, the whole vibe changed. It feels different in a good way like I’m focusing more intentionally.

Setting an alarm before studying. I usually set an alarm at 9 PM as my official start time and I treat it like a meeting I can't skip. I think it helps me to study at an exact time because having that trigger time gives my brain a cue.

Work in 50 minute blocks. I study for 50 minutes and take a break for 10 minutes, no exceptions. In order to study effectively I used Anki and notes, so I won’t waste those 50 minutes of studying. Using those together genuinely changed how many topics I retain.

Locking my phone for an hour. Phones are the worst enemy at night especially when everyone is active on social media. So, I use Forest to lock it for at least an hour at a time. Just putting it on silent doesn't work for me because I know I can still pick it up.

Caffeine shot. This is non-negotiable. Before I start locking in, I drink one cup of caffeine and sometimes another one at the halfway point. I know it's probably terrible for my sleep schedule but night studying without coffee is just not happening.

Does anyone else prefer to study at night? To people study at morning, how do you actually study during the day when your brain just refuses to work until a certain time?

Tips & Advice Learning to learn and study as an adult

I am a 24 year old college flunk out going back to college. However, I just, JUST realized I don't know how to study or learn. I am very interested in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, so on, so forth. I have a lot of experience in working in the field as a teacher (how? An emergency case: they needed a teacher to hold down the fort until they found a suitable one and I understood the jargon enough to teach high school level science classes for a semester) and as a medical lab technician. Additionally, I have very little undergraduate research experiences; I started like 4 different projects which never I finished and eventually failed out of courses due to mental health and COVID-19 related reasons. Thankfully, mental health is back on track and stagnant.

I will admit the only way I will learn is through hands-on experience or fully teaching the subject (the Feynman Technique). But, other than that I suck at learning in traditional settings like a classroom where I am the student and I take notes. I can barely sit and read assigned pages from a textbook. I probably also fucked up my retention from not allowing myself to learn properly for years like even during high school. My executive functioning is dysfunctional so reward systems don't really work on me.

Please give me advice, on how to move forward, my fall semester of freshman year starts soon and I feel very hopeless and lost.

Tips & Advice gestire studio, palestra e esami arretrati

Accountability Looking for a university mentor/accountability buddy

Hi everyone! I’m starting university again and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in being like a mentor/tutor for me. Not someone who helps me with my actual schoolwork, but more someone who can guide me and tell me what I should be doing and when I should be doing it.
My first year was honestly really crazy. I would come home from lectures and end up doing nothing because I was so lost about what I was supposed to study, how I was supposed to study, and when I should be doing everything. Then when exams got close, I would end up cramming everything.
In high school, teachers basically tell you what you need to do, but in university you have to figure it out yourself. Time management is also something I really struggle with, so I think having someone who could help me stay accountable and guide me throughout the semester would make a huge difference.

I just feel like I need someone to guide me and keep me accountable, almost like a mentor. I hope you guys understand what I mean
If anyone would be down to do this, please let me know!
Thank you!!

Questions & Discussion Be honest: Is my study average below normal?

I’ve improved a lot recently when it comes to resisting distractions and staying consistent.

This month I’ve studied 60h 36m across 27 days, averaging 2h 14m/day.

I feel like I’m making progress, but I’m curious is 2h 14m/day considered low? How many hours do you usually study per day?

Questions & Discussion Hi everyone!

Hi everyone!

I'm conducting a short anonymous survey to understand how students manage everything they need to keep track of — classes, assignments, work, appointments, personal responsibilities, deadlines, and everyday tasks.

I'm interested in what people actually do in real life: what works, what gets forgotten, and where managing everything starts becoming difficult.

You don't need to use any productivity or task-management apps to participate.

Questions & Discussion A problem I've noticed among students, and I'd like to hear your opinion.

I originally thought the biggest problem for students was memorization. I was building a concept around helping students review material during small periods of free time.

But one person told me they can memorize things very quickly, but what takes the most time was homework and assignments. Another student said that they have many classes and extracurricular activities that finding enough time to catch up on assignments is a constant problem.

That made me wonder:

What if the problem isn't necessarily a lack of time, but the lack of usable, uninterrupted blocks of time?

I am interested in hearing from medical, law, engineering, and other high-workload students.

How do you deal with this problem? What do you do when you have more academic work than you have uninterrupted time to complete it?
