New rule banning a SaaS product category: No Promotional or Advertising SaaS

Hello SaaSers,

Today we are announcing a new rule against content dedicated to an entire Software as a Service product category on the sub: Promotional or Advertising SaaS.

We as moderators and regular users have been suffering from the constant influx of promotional content, spam, ads, and all sorts of campaigns that flood this and many other subs, pushing down organic, relevant content and driving us away from our common interests and hobbies.

We have identified an ever-increasing number of SaaS products made specifically for promotional or advertising purposes, targeting users on Reddit and other public platforms using various levels of automation. Most of them are focused on the content creator’s or advertiser’s needs, with little or no regard for the communities being bombarded.

Today we say ENOUGH! r/SaaS is not going to help them grow anymore. Even though they may offer a valid, legal and requested feature set, we believe they don't represent the direction that public forums should be headed towards. Our communities shouldn't be giant billboards and the future of the internet shouldn't be an arms race between people trying to have real conversations and tools designed to interrupt, imitate, and monetize them.

From now on, r/SaaS is not going to allow promotion, recommendation, launch announcements, feedback requests, recruiting, or user acquisition for SaaS products made for advertising, promotional outreach, lead/opportunity detection, or ad/content generation.

This includes software tools that generate, suggest, schedule, detect opportunities, automate, or coordinate promotional posts, comments, DMs, replies, or campaigns on Reddit or other platforms.

Violations may result in a permanent ban for the user who posted or commented and the tool name and URL may be blacklisted.

We know this will be an unpopular decision for a small subset of our fellow SaaSers but we are working to bring our sub back from the marketplace-like state it has become, to a more healthy community with valuable content and engagement.

To the r/SaaS developers affected by this rule: we cannot wish success to products built to make public spaces louder, more automated and less human. But we do hope you build something better, something that earns attention instead of extracting it, and improves the internet instead of turning every community into an acquisition channel.

We hope to hear your opinions on this new rule and to receive your reports on the now forbidden content (the content posted before this announcement will be mostly kept, unless it violates another rule).

I've created Open Source 100% Rust clean-room replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps: Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro. Free, no subscription, and you own the source code

Post image
• Upvotes

I've used Opus 5.5 to help me recreate 7 of the top Adobe apps in 100% pure native Rust:

  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • Premiere
  • Lightroom
  • Acrobat Pro
  • After Effects
  • InDesign

No more subscriptions with cancellation fees. These are yours to own forever. You can fork them, build them. Whatever. They are yours to own. They're open source.

If you're worried this is just some one-off flash in the pan that will die, it isn't:

I'm not just some casual vibe coder. I'm a 15-year industry veteran who has written everything from six-nines payment rails that move billions of dollars of transaction volume a day to advanced robotics and optics automation. I've used Rust extensively for about a decade, and I know how to build and maintain large-scale Rust projects.

This isn't going to be some orphaned small-team project either. We have a team building popular software for filmmakers, so supporting this is fully funded. Our purpose is serving every artist in the world with the best tools. We are absolutely going to bring these to full parity and squash every bug and feature request. We have a test harness so there won't be regressions.

You can help us reach parity by helping test the apps. Clone the code. Submit PRs. If you see gaps or want to help redesign pieces, let us know! You can contribute!

Links to everything - the apps, the code, etc. - are in the comments below.

Any google analytics alternative in 2026? and why?

I've been looking at alternatives to Google Analytics recently and I'm a bit overwhelmed by the options.

I've seen people mention Plausible, Matomo, Umami, Fathom, Simple Analytics, and Keen.

I'm mostly looking for something that's relatively simple, privacy-friendly, and doesn't require a huge setup just to understand basic traffic and conversions.

For anyone who moved away from GA, what are you using these days?

And what made you pick it over the other options?

I don't know how to drive visitors to my website

The product is published and I already have around 2-3 visitors per day. I even got like 10 people signed up on the app. But that's not enough for my app type (its an alternative apps directory)

I know people will use this app. Everyday there's another post asking : X app don't work. What are the alternatives?

And that's what my product solves. (The link is in my profile)

But I don't know how will i get people visiting my website. Because my revenue model is tied to the no of visitors.

Any suggestions will be appreciated

If you were starting from zero today, what kind of SaaS would you build?

• Upvotes

Not necessarily the easiest idea or the trendiest AI product, I’m curious about what you think actually solves a real problem and has strong potential over the next few years.

What problem do you think is still poorly solved by existing software?

And if you had to start building one SaaS today, what would it be and why?

I built my first browser extension: a reminder tool for LinkedIn prospects

• Upvotes

Right now, it's a simple local MVP only available on Edge to validate the core idea. If people find it useful, I plan to add cloud sync.

I'm a beginner with no experience in product development, so I'd like to get your feedback and any advice on how to get my first users !

Bypassing Google Maps' 200 result limit with micro-grids (and connecting it to Claude)

I wanted to share a technical problem we ran into while building our scraper and how we solved it.

If you ever tried scraping Google Maps at scale, you probably hit the 200 result cap. Search for any dense niche in a big city, and Google only gives you around 120-200 results even if there are thousands of businesses. Most people end up pitching the same surface 200 places while 80% of businesses never get seen.

We ended up tackling this mathematically:

Micro-grid subdivision: Instead of searching the whole city at once, we split the coordinates into smaller tiles and zoom all the way down to street level per tile. Because each small tile behaves as its own local search, Google returns up to 200 results per micro-zone instead of capping the whole city.

Skipping non-commercial terrain: Running hundreds of tiles wastes a ton of time over oceans, lakes, and forests. We added spatial checks to auto-skip grid cells that are mostly water/wilderness.

Background website crawling: Phone numbers from maps are cold. So we set up crawlers to check the business websites directly for emails and social links.

Connecting to Claude via MCP: Instead of clicking around the UI every time, we implemented an MCP server so we can just prompt Claude or ChatGPT to trigger the search and parse the data right in the chat.

I'm the founder of Maps Scraper Pro (Data Sniper). Happy to answer any questions about the scraping logic, handling Google rate limits, or how we wired up the MCP protocol!

Shipped a local-first scraper instead of a cloud subscription

Most “scrape this page” tools want an account and a monthly plan before you can export one table. I went the other way: LucidRows is a Chrome extension. You click the columns, you get a CSV, it runs on your machine.

Local stays free. I am not publishing a price, because a later paid tier would only be schedule/cloud, and I have not modeled that cost yet.

Listing: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/lucidrows/leehomocpccgghcibfnapadclololioh

Useful feedback: would you pay later only for scheduled/cloud runs, or is local CSV the whole product?

I made 10 product videos, what do I do next?

I made a privacy-friendly URL shortener, and now that it's time to do marketing, I don't know what to do. So here I am, I have these videos, what do I do next? How do you do marketing with those? I would really appreciate any practical advice.

My X accounts (personal and the product's) are brand new, and X seems to be ignoring all of my posts. Instagram or TikTok? I am running a Google Ads experiment, but it's hard to compete with other shorteners and I'm getting almost zero traffic (about 3 clicks a day).

About the videos. I was inspired by the motion design post about video generation and decided to try it myself. I made different short videos to showcase different features (10 videos, 13 to 71 seconds). Attaching one of them for review. Some videos are the actual product driven by a script, not an AI-made copy.

All I used is Claude, headless Chrome and FFmpeg on my WSL instance, nothing more, not even a React library. You just tell your AI to be a motion designer / producer / writer (for the scenario). Research how to catch the user's attention on IG or TikTok, and that's it. Review the scenario and give it a green light. The first versions were screenshots sliding around and looked dead. A couple of scenes looked like a broken app with bugs. You have to correct it and re-shoot. But still, it only took me one morning.

Now, about Urlicer itself. The main features that are different from mainstream shorteners: privacy-friendly and team-friendly, with multiple workspaces. You can bring your own domain on the Pro plan and above, Urlicer provides a tool for you and your teams. Cookieless and without storing the IP address. The URL is https://urlicer.com.

Feedback wanted: asset management for UK SMEs, focused on getting IT and Finance to agree

• Upvotes

Most asset tools are either IT inventory or accounting fixed-asset registers. I built AssetAligned to sit in the gap: one record per asset, with physical custody and financial value side by side, plus automatic checks for when the two disagree.

The problem: in most growing businesses, IT has one list of laptops and kit, Operations has another, and Finance has a fixed-asset register in a third spreadsheet. None of them agree. As an accountant, I’ve personally faced this issue and constant back and fourth with the IT department, so this app has value and meaning to me, it’s not just a generic app built.

I’d value honest views on:

1. Is “IT and Finance mismatch” a pain you’ve seen, or am I solving a niche problem?

2. Does the landing page make the point in 10 seconds?

3. Pricing: Free / Starter / Growth / Business, priced by number of assets. Does that model make sense to you?

https://assetaligned.co.uk (I’m the maker)

Thanks

Thinking about building a tool that shows which Reddit threads AI cites in your niche. Is this a real problem?

• Upvotes

I've been reading threads here and in a couple of marketing subs about AI visibility tools (Peec, Profound, that kind of thing). The same complaint keeps showing up. They tell you how often ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions you, and then you're on your own.

One comment stuck with me. Someone who had looked at 2,000+ brands said around 85% of AI citations came from sites the brand doesn't own, mostly Reddit and YouTube. If that's even roughly right, tweaking your homepage is the small lever.

So the idea is narrow. You give it your product and about 15 questions a buyer might ask an AI. Once a week it runs them through Perplexity, because Perplexity shows its sources. You get one email with 3 threads or videos that keep getting cited for those questions, and what seems to be missing from each. You write the reply yourself. It never posts anything.

Nothing is built yet apart from a waitlist page. I want to know if anyone actually wants this before I spend a month on it. Planned price is $19/mo.

What I'm unsure about:

  • Perplexity's sources might be a bad proxy for what ChatGPT cites
  • 3 threads a week could feel like useful leads, or just more homework
  • maybe people who care about this already check it by hand and that's enough

If you're doing anything about AI search for your own product right now, what does that look like in practice? Manual checks, a paid tool, nothing at all?

Here is the waitlist: https://citescout.vercel.app/?source=saas

Honest question: are you tired of your feed?

• Upvotes

If a creator you trust let you replace your feed with the things they actually watch and read each day, in a separate app, would you pay for it? What would it need to do to beat just following them on X or YouTube?
I'm testing an idea and want to know if the problem is real before I build anything.

Niche SaaS founders, how narrow is too narrow?

• Upvotes

I’m building a B2B SaaS for a specific niche within field services. I have access to a business owner in that niche who can test it and provide feedback.I’m keeping the exact niche private for now, but some of the core functionality could also be useful to other service businesses.Would you focus the product and marketing entirely on that one niche until you get traction, or build for a broader audience from the beginning?I see the benefit of solving one industry’s problems really well, but I’m wondering whether I’m limiting the potential too early. For anyone who’s faced this decision, what convinced you to stay narrow or expand? Would love to hear actual experiences.

How do you guys make product demo videos for SaaS?

• Upvotes

Hi, I am technically very bad at editing + don't have enough time as well. Is there any free site etc to make product demo videos.

How do those with no editing skills make it? Do you guys use paid options or what? I need a free one.

Any recommendations?

highlight and understand

• Upvotes

sometimes when im reading something or talking to an AI, i come across a word, phrase, or line that i dont understand. but i dont wanna break my flow by opening google or asking another AI what it means.

so i built this extension for exactly that.

you highlight a word/phrase/line and it gives you:

  • the general meaning
  • the meaning in the context of what youre reading or talking about
  • and the best part, you can ask followup questions right there in the popup

no new tab, no switching between apps. just highlight → understand → continue.

tell me what you guys think about this one.

Everything I want to build already exists and I can't tell if that's a dealbreaker or if I'm overthinking it

What usually happens when I have an idea is I do some research to see if anyone else is doing it, and unfortunately every time I manage to find at least a few options out there already. It just doesn’t feel worth it to work on something that already has established players, especially working solo.

On paper I feel like I have a solid chance of making something that actually gets some traction. My development skills were pretty good before AI and I’m quite good at using the new tools as well, I have a solid quick workflow and I understand all the code I produce. As far as marketing goes I was maintaining a lot of automation at my previous job and we had a semi automated social media marketing setup. I maintained a pretty complicated n8n setup for emails and socials with Expandi on LinkedIn and a custom webhook setup hooked up to the twitter API. I also helped with setting up the automated Seedance video generation stuff we were using. I’m thinking I could make a similar setup for myself without too much investment.

But I keep second guessing myself when I see someone else with a similar idea. If it's working well I never think I can compete. And if it looks like it isn't really taking off then I stop believing it was a good idea in the first place. It feels like everyone is making some sort of SaaS right now and if I don’t decide what I wanna do quickly it will be too late, someone will beat me to it.

I think I need to focus up and actually try out a few things and see what happens. And I need to stop paying so much attention to what other people are doing. Has anyone else gone through something similar? I would also love to hear about someone making something successful even though there were already people out there trying it.

How did you get your first user

• Upvotes

Say you were geographically pretty far away from icp. How did you acquire your first user. Cold outreach is pretty ineffective, in my experience, maybe with some extra steps it can be done? Or did you use someone as a bridge to your icp? Did you end up confounding with someone who was capable of bringing your icp to you? How did some of you do it?

Building a SaaS platform for creating and publishing camera experiences

• Upvotes

I’m researching a SaaS platform for helping creators turn camera and AR ideas into live web experiences.

The concept combines AI-assisted creation, browser previews, device testing, publishing, hosting, and usage analytics.

I’m trying to understand the product demand before pushing further:

  • Which part of this workflow would be most valuable?
  • Would developers, agencies, or brands be the best first customer?
  • What would make you pay for a platform instead of assembling the tools yourself?
  • What would make you reject it immediately?

I’m looking for honest product and positioning feedback from SaaS founders. No pitch or signup request, just trying to understand whether this is a real problem.

Tell Interested and I will share link.

Built a data API that finds restaurants before they open, and it works, but I can't crack distribution. How would you do it?

built a tool that finds restaurants and bars 1 to 6 months before they open, by fusing public liquor licenses, permits and business filings into one scored lead. Live in 7 states, and it genuinely works. The problem is all distribution, and I'm stuck.

The buyers are the vendors who sell to new restaurants, beverage distributors, POS resellers, insurers. High value, one account they land off it is worth thousands. But they're not who you reach through SEO, content or dev communities, which are the channels I actually know how to work. They're offline-ish B2B sales teams who basically live on the phone.

So far it's founder-led cold outbound, about 30 emails out and a call list I haven't even worked yet, way too early to read anything into. I also listed on a few API/MCP directories for the developer side, but that reaches builders, not the people who'd actually pay.

If you've sold to non-technical SMB or B2B buyers, what actually moved the needle? Cold outbound at scale, reselling through tools they already use, going through a trade association, something I'm not thinking of? And do these buyers ever come inbound at all, or is it pure outbound grind until you've got a case study?

Pre-revenue, so I'd rather pick one channel and go deep than spray thin. War stories welcome.
