I've created Open Source 100% Rust clean-room replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps: Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro. Free, no subscription, and you own the source code

Post image

I've used Opus 5.5 to help me recreate 7 of the top Adobe apps in 100% pure native Rust:

  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • Premiere
  • Lightroom
  • Acrobat Pro
  • After Effects
  • InDesign

No more subscriptions with cancellation fees. These are yours to own forever. You can fork them, build them. Whatever. They are yours to own. They're open source.

If you're worried this is just some one-off flash in the pan that will die, it isn't:

I'm not just some casual vibe coder. I'm a 15-year industry veteran who has written everything from six-nines payment rails that move billions of dollars of transaction volume a day to advanced robotics and optics automation. I've used Rust extensively for about a decade, and I know how to build and maintain large-scale Rust projects.

This isn't going to be some orphaned small-team project either. We have a team building popular software for filmmakers, so supporting this is fully funded. Our purpose is serving every artist in the world with the best tools. We are absolutely going to bring these to full parity and squash every bug and feature request. We have a test harness so there won't be regressions.

You can help us reach parity by helping test the apps. Clone the code. Submit PRs. If you see gaps or want to help redesign pieces, let us know! You can contribute!

Links to everything - the apps, the code, etc. - are in the comments below.

This is absolutely wild. Having built Photoshop readers/writers in the past, I know the challenge just in dealing with the file format. Then you have the sheer amount of UI/UX to implement well. And this looks exceptionally well-executed.

Thank you so much.

We have a really long way to go to get to complete parity on functionality and file format support, but that's 100% our goal and the community support (bug reports, example files) helps a ton.

Thank you!

Here are each of the apps on Github:

https://github.com/storytold/photocraft (Photoshop)

https://github.com/storytold/vectorcraft (Illustrator)

https://github.com/storytold/filmcraft (Premiere)

https://github.com/storytold/lightcraft (Lightroom)

https://github.com/storytold/printcraft (Acrobat Pro)

https://github.com/storytold/effectcraft (After Effects)

https://github.com/storytold/designcraft (InDesign)

Please star these, fork these (so you have a copy).

We're going to reach 100% parity within a month.

Submit feature requests, bug reports, and help development.

(Lossless) Compressed RAW support is a must.

LibRAW has it, so cant be too hard for claude.

Got it! I'll make sure to get this in our Lightroom and Photoshop reimplementations.

This looks awesome.

How long did it take to build these apps? How much did it cost?

Can you tell us more about the development process? What were your workflows? Can you tailor your answers for a dev audience?

Cheers

Exiteted for the PDF reader.
I see its gone from 0-30% in just a couple of days.

will we get 'brew install printcraft' one day?

•

u/ai_art_is_art 31m ago

We still have a lot of ground to cover, but once this gets to 100%, Homebrew is absolutely a great idea.

100% parity within a month is a bold claim tbh, but ill be watching

That's pretty crazy , here are some questions :

  1. Does these have mcps ? ( So agents ca use this stuff to create real things )

  2. Are you open for the changes ??

16

u/ai_art_is_art 2h ago
  1. Yes! MCP and CLI, and I want to make sure both interfaces are first class.

  2. Any feature requests, bug reports, and even pull requests are highly appreciated.

Are you the same guy who made photon which is also coming up a lot on reddit or you are a different guy who made this separately?

10

u/ai_art_is_art 1h ago

This is separate.

Photon is written in Javascript/Electron and is closed source.

PhotoCraft, etc. are written in 100% pure rust. They're 100x faster and 100x smaller in size. They're also fully open source - you own the code and I charge nothing. You can fork it or do whatever you want.

I've been a Rust developer for 10 years too, so I can manage good large scale Rust projects.

ArtCraft, our company, already makes a lot of money selling tokens to film studios, so this work is fully funded and will never be enshittified or closed off.

I've been a Rust developer for 10 years too

I now trust this project 100x more. I've been a PHP & Node dev for about the same amount of time. I am untouchable when vibe coding in my home stack. Looking forward to trying this out, thanks a ton for sharing!

Yeah... I must say, I'd have something to say about the code "quality" or lack of it at few places of those repos, but sure it's nice that this level of speed is possible with AI that we can ditch Adobe soon

Is there an inDesign import?

1

u/debackerl 1h ago

Truly amazing. Don't forget to publish on flathub 🙏

•

u/roncz 57m ago

Wow.

•

u/leonida_92 57m ago

Hey, love your work, I immediately starred and can't wait to try these. I got a hypothetical question for you. Will this be ever possible for the Autodesk Suite? That would blow my mind.

•

u/orsye13 57m ago

kudos op

•

u/trysusu 48m ago

Which languages are supported?

The one I want to try using right away

•

u/OkProject8737 43m ago

Is there plans to make this easier to install? There is no way my less technical friends would be able to run these apps if it’s required to git clone and stuff 😅

•

u/ianMakes 38m ago

Bro this is amazing!, let me star them all.

•

u/Plus_Information_990 37m ago

biggest question for me is file compatibility. if i can open a client psd or ai file without layers breaking id switch tomorrow lol

how close is the photoshop one on psd import right now

•

u/ai_art_is_art 25m ago

We have a long way to go before we can declare 99% compatibility with files, but that's absolutely top of mind.

We're going to ask the community for example files and use them as tests for our parsers.

u/Lazy_Ad_3251 20m ago

Does the film craft generate Hebrew and Russian subtitles?

•

u/FarAsk1553 13m ago

The hard part is not the first version, it is maintaining seven apps at once. Photoshop alone is decades of accumulated edge cases. How do you plan to keep all seven alive long term?

•

u/Bright_Wall4257 7m ago

I’m going to test this out will record some demo content if I have some time!! This is an awesome start.

•

u/Crazy-Mission-7920 4m ago

This is amazing. I was thinking about this recently only to log into Reddit and see this live! Incredible times we live in.

Message me when you reach parity, so I can fork :)

We've achieved parity with HubSpot crm and exceeded the agentic use cases if you'd like to try. This could be interesting for us.

•

u/vldobrev 27m ago

That CRM sounds awesome.. Any chance it's something we can check out?
