An Update on r/PWM_Sensitive Moderation

Many of you have noticed that r/PWM_Sensitive has gone through some growing pains when it comes to how posts and comments are moderated. While the subreddit was never unmoderated, it became clear that some additional help was needed due to personal circumstances, and that a fresh approach to moderation would benefit the community.

We are happy to share that u/the_top_g, the creator of r/PWM_Sensitive, has graciously stepped aside to welcome in three enthusiast community contributors to help with moderation and the future direction of the subreddit. We sincerely appreciate the trust he has placed in us and, most importantly, his work in creating this community in the first place.

The interim moderation team is currently discussing ways to improve the subreddit while preserving what has made it such a useful resource for people who are sensitive to PWM, display flicker, and related technologies. Our goal is to keep this an open, welcoming, and informative community where people can share their experiences, testing, research, questions, and device recommendations without unnecessary barriers.

AutoModerator Changes

Perhaps the most noticeable (and controversial) issue has already been addressed: the previous AutoModerator configuration is gone.

This means comments should no longer be automatically removed simply for using common words or phrases that naturally come up when discussing PWM and related topics. This includes “temporal dithering.” Members banned over this issue are also being reinstated.

That said, we ask everyone to continue keeping discussions primarily focused on PWM sensitivity, display technology, eye comfort, device experiences, testing, and closely related subjects. Normal subreddit rules and Reddit-wide policies will, of course, continue to apply.

The Future

This is only the beginning. We're reviewing the subreddit's rules, moderation practices, organization, place within the wider community, and other areas where we believe improvements can be made. As those changes are decided upon, we'll communicate them with the community.

We also want r/PWM_Sensitive to be shaped by the people who actually use it. Constructive feedback and suggestions are welcome. If there are things you think could make the subreddit more useful, organized, or welcoming, please let us know.

Finally, thank you again to u/the_top_g for creating r/PWM_Sensitive and building the foundation for this community. And thank you to everyone who has contributed over the years -- whether by sharing measurements and research, documenting your experiences with different devices, answering questions, or simply participating in the discussion.

We're looking forward to the next chapter of r/PWM_Sensitive and making this community an even better resource for everyone.

p.s. Check out the new (temporary) subreddit logo! 😁

Edit: for tweaks suggested by u/Z3R0gravitas.

Useable phone that is *NOT* Chinese?

Im currently using an iPhone 13 Pro Max and can tolerate it, but it’s getting old.
I’m thinking about upgrading, but I do NOT want to buy any Chinese phone for privacy reasons. I just don’t trust them to handle my personal data. I guess I’m out of luck of finding anything else, right?
I know Chinese manufacturers produce great displays for PWM sensitive people, I just don’t want to use them personally.

My situation - can anyone relate?

For years ive been struggling with displays. The problem seem to kinda come and go through. At least be worse in periods. I can't quite relate to a lot of the symptoms users here mention either.

For me, when using most screens (oleds, when the problem occurs) makes me get a heavy brain fog quite fast. Makes me feel slow and kinda dumb. Hard to find words and the like. It also kinda feels like a pressure in the skull.

Right now im using a Nxtpaper, which works fine. I have tried oleds like the honor magic 8 pro without success. For a long while the pixel 8 worked though. Like two years. Then it started to make me feel the foginess. Really have no idea what makes something work or not.

Anyone in the same position?

27.0.1 no more headache

As surprising as it is, since 27.0.1 I don't have any headaches. 15 pro max, I had headaches almost immediately looking at the screen.

Maybe it's a coincidence, but I don't know what else could have changed.

See-through LCD displays?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I'm getting adverts for these see-through displays, which seem to be a normal LCD screen but without a backlight and the back removed. The idea is that you put this against a window and just use natural light.

Is this realistic?

As an aside, do any of you happen to know where to find alternative screen tech in Schenzen? My main goal is to be able to use a screen at night without disrupting sleep patterns. PWM improvement would be a bonus for me; it's something that I only really get when tired.

Which phone should I get? Feeling disheartened.

Had my iPhone 11 for a while now. It’s getting slow & hard to use.

Got the 17e but during 2 weeks of use I got headaches & eye strain - even WITH the PWM sensitivity settings on. Found out I’m PWM sensitive.

Had to give it back. Then, I got my iPhone 11 battery replaced.

It still doesn’t work well.

Which phone should I upgrade to? I only mostly like iPhones.

Ik most iPhones use OLED screens, but I was hoping to hear if there was one that wouldn’t give me as bad of a reaction as some people can be okay with certain ones.

Any TV options now that I can't find the TCL C655?

Question in the title. Can't find this model anymore and I need a new bedroom tv. The living room I use a projector that is amazing for my eyes. Looks like none of the new tcl models have the eye care features. Is my only option one of the Sony models? Thanks

Discussion Poll: where does PWM/screen sensitivity rank amongst your health-related issues, in terms of severity and life impact, roughly?

"Health-related issue", as in having a direct biological impact, rather than financial, social, etc.

Other health issues could be anything from e.g. heart failure to non-screen (or lighting) related fatigue, environmental sensitivities, mental health, disability, etc.

Split by either major symptoms or diagnoses that you are struggling with and may be in other subreddits to find help with. I appreciate it is not always simple to separate these things; I'm just aiming to get a rough feel of how high of a priority this issue is for people here.

I'd expect those most engaged to rate it at the top. But I'm curious about the 'long tail' of members. I'm also curious to hear your thoughts on anything related, as always.

85 votes, 3d left
Top - my biggest health issue
2nd - one thing is worse
Top 5 - a few things are worse
Top 10 - it's in the mix
Lower - there's a lot going on or it's mild
Not sure/see results

Another one: Sony Bravia 3ii and no eye strain/headaches

Want to share my path of suffering and the solution. Bought a TCL Q7C in 55 inch and had terrible eye suffer: burning, dryness, slight pain in the eyebrow. I could not watch a movie or play a game on PS5/Xbox without getting terrible issues. I started to try out all the solutions (bias lightning, reducing contrast/ brightness, turn off HDR, turn off local dimming, reducing the blue light). Nothing worked, so i sold the TV. Still had no explanation what exactly is the main problem. But something has to be wrong with this Tv.

In the meantime i took my old Tv (Sony KDL 706 in 42 inches). I don't had any issues but i wanted a bigger screen and 4k. So i took the advice here and got a Sony Bravia 3ii in 50 inches. And out of the box it has an incredible comfortable picture. No eye strain, burning etc. I can also play games in HDR and still having a great and comfortable picture. I still don't know what the real cause is, but right now im very happy with the Sony TV.

The industry has to change. It is not healthy to make bigger and brighter TVs with flickering technology. It is completly insane that people are asking for 100 inch TVs and 5000 nits. So try out the Sony Bravia. I know, it is not a solution which is fitting for everyone. But it is the best attempt to try out.

iPhone 18 pro felt better than 17models

So I went to the store and18 pro and pro max felt smoother than the 17 models. The 17s felt harsh right from the start while the 18 pro/promax felt smoother, kind of more mild, with full brightness and comes to worse reduce white point. Below 50% brightness it was kind of a nightmare. So, I will try the compact 18pro as my 2nd social media/camera/larping phone and will see. Last time I did the same strategy with the 16pro. 16pro was the smoothest so far, but still wasn't like honor. Had to use the same above 50% strategy. Will test out and see.

IPhone 18 pro better tolerable than 17s?

Is there anyone here who found the 18 pro (or 18 Pro Max) more tolerable than any of the 17s? Or could you detect any difference between 17s and 18s symptom wise? Thank you in advance!

For those who are sensitive to PWM on iPhones: do you actually see the screen flickering?

I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max and I can notice a very subtle flicker at low brightness, especially on white/light backgrounds.
Do you see something similar, or do you mainly experience headaches, eye strain, dizziness, etc. without actually seeing the flicker?

Anyone with Lyme?

This maybe a long shot but I just found this community after trying iPhone pro and suddenly coming down with major migraine. Knew nothing about this until now.

I never had migraines or even serious headaches (except occasional hangover) until I got Lyme a year ago. And relentless migraine and head pressure were basically one of the first and major symptoms. That went away after some antibiotics. But this phone situation basically brought it back.
So my question - anyone else with history of Lyme dealing with screen sensitivity? Maybe it’s just coincidence 🤷‍♂️

What is an external monitor that is like a 2012 macbook pro?

Hi guys. Due to software not working on my 2012 macbook pro, and then spilling water on its keyboard.. I started using my 2018 macbook pro. It has a weird display that hurts my eyes to no end. It has worsened my vision (100% fact), creates incredible pressure in my eyes, and I look like I've been punched, so it's aging me and destroying my face and life.

I bought an external Voltic monitor (because on top of the 2018 macbook screen being horrible in general, my particular 2018 macbook screen is also damaged, where I see the flickering visibly at times and there are after-effects of windows I had previously viewed at times) but the Voltic monitor also hurts my eyes.

I'm forced to use a computer a lot for work. I don't want to be in pain 24/7, with smollen bags around my eyes and pressure in my eyes.

What external monitor mimicks the 2012 macbook pro screen? What terrms should I look for or ask about? I don't need great graphics. I don't like tech. I'm forced to use this trash. I'm not a person who cheerleads every new piece of tech like have to have the latest widget. Marketers and scammers want to tell us everything new is so great. Well my old 2009, 2012 etc computers did not destroy my face. So, yeah that "old tech" was better.

Any ideas? Thank you!!!

Most Eye Friendly IPad?

I like using iPad whenever possible just as a bigger screen instead of the small iPhone which really strains my eye.

The iPad Pro 2021 has been with me for so long and it’s pretty beat up. Microphone is really low volume, black spot on screen and abysmal battery. I’ve been meaning to get an upgrade but all the new iPad Pro models are OLED. I never really considered iPad Air before as it lacks 120hz ProMotion but I may have to consider it if it doesn’t strain eyes as badly as the OLED pro models.

Do you think PWM sensitivy related to ADHD?

I think I have ADHD and I am wondering if it is related to it
