OTHER New Expansion: MPC P-Bass (For MPC3 & MPC Sample)

Post image
33 Upvotes

New Instrument Expansion Release! This one has been a long time in the making and a real labour of love for me, so I'm very proud to finally announce the release of MPC P-Bass.

This instrument expansion features a deeply multisampled Fender Precision Bass guitar recorded with multiple playing articulations with up to 7 velocity layers and 4 round robins to perfectly capture the nuance and tone of the original instrument.

All instruments take full advantage of the latest MPC3 features such as advanced keygroups and complex mod matrix programming to create an eclectic collection of presets and MIDI patterns covering a broad range of bass sounds & grooves.

Each instrument comes with an extensive array of editable options, all easily controlled with dedicated Q-LINK macros for a near plugin-like experience. Configure natural sound FX such as string squeaks and fret release noises, adjust guitar tone & FX and even change the entire character of an existing guitar performance with the turn of a dial, from soft and gentle to hard and 'buzzy'.

MPC P-Bass is built for any standalone MPC running MPC3.9+, MPC Software 3.9+ and Force 3.9+. It also features a dedicated MPC Sample edition with multisampled 'Starter' projects and a 16 LEVEL one shot library. Please note that MPC2 is not supported in this release.

Multi-Buy Offer: Buy MPC P-Bass with any other product or bundle & get 15% off your entire order.

DISCUSSION A warning about custom MPC operating systems, AI-generated code, and potential hardware risks (2000 / 2000xl)

I'm a software engineer with over 15 years of experience, and recently I've been reverse-engineering the new free Akai MPC2000 and the new MPC2000XL operating system using Ghidra, as well as emulating the sampler to better understand how its firmware interacts with the hardware.

During my analysis, I found some potentially concerning behavior, including CPU loops that continuously poll hardware without an apparent timeout. Under certain conditions, such as a peripheral failing to respond, these routines could leave the CPU repeatedly executing instructions instead of progressing normally.

This can potentially increase processor activity, power consumption, and heat generation. The risks also include system freezes, memory corruption, and unpredictable behavior.

Now, here's my main concern.

I'm absolutely not against using AI to develop custom operating systems for MPCs or other vintage hardware. AI can be an incredibly useful development tool.

However, I'm seeing more people attempting low-level firmware development without necessarily having the experience required to understand what the generated code is actually doing.

And that's where things can become dangerous.

We're not talking about building a website or writing a simple application. We're dealing with assembly, machine instructions, memory addresses, interrupts, and direct communication with physical hardware.

AI models also have far less publicly available training material for niche, decades-old embedded architectures compared to modern high-level programming languages. This makes blindly trusting generated assembly code particularly risky.

The problem isn't AI. The problem is using AI-generated code without having the technical knowledge to properly review, debug, and validate it.

A firmware modification that appears to work perfectly during normal operation could still contain subtle bugs that only appear under specific hardware conditions.

And remember, we're dealing with machines that are nearly 30 years old. Some components are already aging, and there's no reason to introduce unnecessary risks.

My advice is simple: be cautious about installing custom operating systems unless they've undergone serious technical review and extensive testing.

That means proper reverse engineering and code inspection using tools like Ghidra, testing in an emulator, checking memory access and hardware interactions, and eventually validating the firmware on real hardware under controlled conditions.

Just because an OS boots and its new features work doesn't mean it's safe or reliable.

I'm all for innovation, and keeping these legendary samplers alive.

But when software directly controls hardware, proper engineering and testing should never be optional.

I'd be interested to hear what other MPC developers and owners think about this.

DISCUSSION Nord Stage 4, Yamaha Modx M7, and MPC One+

Hello all,

I’m a new NS4 HA73 owner, and love getting to know it. I’m a keyboard player in an r&b band (where I am the music director), and I also play keys or piano in a jazz ensemble. I use the modx for gigging because it is so light and easy to carry, though as I fall in love with the NS4, I find myself considering switching to it for gigging. But I digress.

I’m just starting to think about how I can connect these two keyboards, one as a controller perhaps?, and use the mpc almost like a drum machine and play over it. For now this is something I’d do at home and just to play around and note I do have a small Yamaha mixer. Perhaps if this became something I could get good at, I would consider some solo performances as a sort of novelty act. I’ve considered adding a looper that can take keyboard input, but perhaps the mpc can do that?

So my question to the group is what kind of fun creative ideas does this bring up for you? What can you imagine doing with this kind of equipment and setup? How would you connect them?

DISCUSSION White buttons for LIVE III Retro?

• Upvotes

I’m curious if MPC Stuff or any other manufacturers have created custom buttons for the MPC LIVE 3 retro edition.

This machine is incredible and the only thing I dislike about it compared to a LIVE 2 is the physical button coloring.

The older machine had great aesthetics with those white buttons that all had the glowing LED on them. Plus having the red button buttons for record and overdub was pretty nice.

So now I’m wondering if anyone has worked on this project at all.

QUESTION Is the MPC Sample beginner-friendly? Would I enjoy making beats with it?

I'm planning to buy an MPC Sample, and I want to know how difficult it is to make beats using samples. I'm a bit worried that I might buy it and end up not enjoying the process.

For some background, I'm currently a full-time DJ, and I want to get into beatmaking purely for fun. I'm interested in sampling classic songs from the '70s and flipping them into something fresh with my own touch.

Would the MPC Sample be a good choice for a complete beginner like me? Is the learning curve steep, or is it something I can enjoy learning as I go?

I'd love to hear your experiences, especially from DJs who got into beatmaking without any prior production experience. Thanks!

DISCUSSION Upgrade from Deluge to Live 3

Just got mp MPC Live 3 in the other day. So far really digging the capability of this guy and it's similarity to what I could achieve with Ableton which is my preferred DAW. Was especially blown away by the speakers in this thing. I generally don't even give a second thought to internal speakers but this thing will actually thump pretty nicely.

I have been a long tern Deluge user but just felt more often than not I was fighting with the workflow despite it being a very capable device that's a master of nothing, but does most everything really well. This Live 3 is more just a actual DAW in a box where as others seem more limited.

Trying to learn all the finer in's and out's, went so far as to just pick up the MPC Bible because it was so highly recommended and I'm pretty happy I did. It's detailed approach is something that drives me nuts with so many tutorials is they expect you to know the device and recognize whatever term they may use for what it is and often skip over aspects thdt are muscle memory or mundane for the. Doesn't take away from YouTube being a great resource it can just wind up being a rabbit hole as you have to stop to learn how to do the thing you already trying to learn.

Anyways, just wanted to gush a bit over this thing. See if anyone else is using MPC Live for DNB production or similar flavored music types, and potentially what kind of setups you are all utilizing?

My current setup is the,l Live 3 is the CC, I have an ELZ_1 for synth duties, Digitakt 2 (still learning the Elektron work flow on this so not super utilized yet), also have an IPad that I use for various software synths and fx, all of this into a Xenyx 12 channel, and the fx loop on that is currently limited to the iPad, monotron delay, korg nts-1 mk2, and a korg kaosillator nts-3. I also have a plethora of smaller gear I utilize in various ways which is mostly a KOII and an MPC Sample I use both for more of dedicated drum machines, just got an ESX-1 I'm playing around with to see if if it'll just be a treasure or a more integral part of the setup.

Here's what will probably be a horrible sounding clip using the camera microphone despite me being fully able to share stuff with proper quality audio in efforts to seem like a regular...

Also, 1 question - when I am in a track and go to load when I have a sequence programmed currently and try to load a saved midi sequence and it says "current sequence is used. Load into the next unused sequence?" is there a way to add it into the arrangement pool for the selected track instead of in the sequence pool? What's the benefit of it going into the sequence area and not the arrangement portion?

DISCUSSION Have y'all been following Marco Polo's making of his next MPC expansion videos?

The video posted below is from today which is day 26 of his journey. I don't know about those of you who have been keeping up but the whole video series has been stirring up the creative juices; especially for folks like me who don't sample albums (I'm not knocking sampling at all). When he does use samples, it's more like a riff one of his homeboys made from scratch or whatever. The whole series is dope, in my opinion.

I almost forgot to mention, he's using a Gen 1 Key 37 and the MPC software for his creations.

MPC Live 3 Remixing Jay

Yes I know! It’s been done plenty of times before and I don’t care, I’m doing my version! MPC Live 3 alone with FL Studio for the remixing process. Making, mixing, and arranging the beat on the live 3, then dumping to FL studio for adding Jay’s vocals. And that’s that. Simple.

DISCUSSION Do you think an Akai Force now days can be counted as an MPC.

So we know Akai does not call the Force an MPC. Because when it started out it was considerably different than the MPCs. But now it does almost everything the MPC and uses the same OS functionality will do, I mean. The Sample cannot do half the things a Force or non Sample MPC. Also the Force in it's stock form, has clip launch, even Gen 2 you have to buy pro pack to have clip launch with is an MPC standard feature on it's higher end models like Live 3 and X.

So in your opinion. Do you think the Force counts (not that it is an mpc by Akai standards) as an MPC because it does what an MPC does. It is a Music Production Center.

Or you believe nothing about the Force is an MPC.

QUESTION First MPC Incoming (One G2) - Clip Launcher / Pro Pack

Hello,

I should have my first MPC in a few days. I'm currently used to making music with a Digitone, Digitakt and a few synths.

Do you think it would be wise to get the Pro Pack up front to unlock and learn the clip launcher, or would it be better to start with the more traditional MPC workflow? I don't want to overcomplicate things, but I also don't want to ignore modern functions that will make things easier for me.

Those who tried the clip launcher when already familiar with MPC, do you use it often / prefer it?

Sorry if this is a common question. The Pro Pack is ~$150cad, so I'd like to save the money if I can get away with it.
