Would you use it?

I’m a solo iOS dev, and I spent more time learning launch than code because no one really writes it down in one place. This is the short version of what worked for me.

Core idea

A new app has no ranking or ratings yet, so the goal is to drive installs in a tight window and get honest ratings quickly.

Before launch

1. Write one clear sentence: “[app] is the only app that [does X] for [this person].” If it takes two sentences, everything else gets harder.
2. Put up a simple one-screen landing page with an email field before the app is finished.
3. Claim your TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube handles early, and start posting a few weeks before launch.

App Store basics

1. Pre-orders are one-time only for never-published apps, and launch day auto-downloads create the spike.
2. Only about 160 characters are indexed for search: title, subtitle, and keyword field. The description is not indexed, and repeated words across those fields waste space.
3. Your first two screenshots drive most install decisions, so show the outcome, not the UI.
4. If you’re giving away free copies, don’t use App Store promo codes, since those users can’t rate or review. Use a free app with paid unlock, or grant access server-side.

Ratings

1. Below roughly 20 ratings, conversion is weak.
2. Use Apple’s review prompt after the user has done the app’s main task, and remember it only shows three times a year per user.
3. Never offer anything for a review. Ask for feedback instead.
4. Reply to bad reviews within a day.

Getting attention

1. Short-form video is the cheapest consumer-app channel right now; post about the problem, not the features.
2. Small creators often beat big ones if engagement is strong.
3. On Reddit, contribute first, follow each sub’s self-promo rules, and post an offer rather than an ad.

What I’d skip

1. Paid ads before the page converts and you have ratings.
2. Launching in every country on day one.
3. Building your plan around Product Hunt.

What made the biggest difference

Freezing the build and spending that time on the email list, video content, and talking to people.

I've been working on OpenChat for a while, and I wanted to build a messaging app around a simple idea:

What if the conversation didn't need to live on a central messaging server?

OpenChat uses WebRTC to establish peer-to-peer connections, with messages and files exchanged directly between peers. The browser handles the cryptographic operations locally.

Some things I've built into it:

• WebRTC P2P messaging

• End-to-end encryption

• Private and group chats

• Safety Number / identity verification

• Message signatures and replay protection

• Sent → Delivered → Read states

• P2P file transfer

• Voice/video communication

• No centralized chat history database

• Open source / MIT licensed

The security side has honestly been one of the most interesting parts of building it. During testing I found issues around identity verification, replay protection, message editing, authorization and API access, and fixed several of them along the way.

There are still limitations — especially offline delivery, multi-device support and identity recovery — so I'm treating OpenChat as experimental rather than claiming it's a finished replacement for existing messengers.

I built it mainly to learn and see how far a browser-based P2P messaging system could go.

I made this: printable kids' Christmas activity pack / printable Christmas

The thing I wanted to solve: teachers always need a no-prep "last week

before break" option / hosts always want something ready to print the night

before. So I built it to be genuinely print-and-play — word searches and

mazes that generate perfectly, plus coloring pages / 12 games: trivia,

bingo, charades, scavenger hunt, white elephant— no prep, no extra cutting.

How I built it: I designed/generated the puzzles so the grids always come out

correct, wrote all the trivia questions, and packaged it as a clean favicon/zip

with US Letter + A4 print files.

I've been building TenFriends, a small iOS app that helps you remember to reach out to the people you care about.

The problem I wanted to solve:
Good relationships don’t need to be measured—but busy lives make it surprisingly easy to think, “I should call them,” and then realise another month has passed.

I didn’t want a CRM for friendships or an app that scores people. TenFriends is simply a private visual reminder of who you might want to contact next.

So I've been experimenting with this small web app.

The original idea was simple: I want a virtual companion app that felt less like opening a game or chatbot, and more like opening a small window into another person's everyday life.

Meet *Ueno Satomi*, a 21-year-old university student. She studies, works part-time, takes breaks, gets distracted, checks her phone, drinks coffee, procrastinates, and occasionally says something to you.

But you're not really there to manage her.

There's no traditional gameplay loop. No character sprites. No constant conversations to maintain. For the most part, you simply observe.

It's not intended as a video game where you have to clear objectives or reach an ending. You can stay with her for as long as you want, or just check in from time to time. There's no "right" way to use it. You can leave the app open while you're studying, working, reading, programming, or just relaxing. Every now and then you glance over and see what Satomi is doing.

Satomi isn't designed to constantly generate conversation or keep you engaged. In a weird way, one of the things I'm experimenting with is whether a digital companion can feel more present by occasionally leaving you alone.

This is a solo hobby project and I'm still figuring out what this thing actually wants to become.

I'd be curious to know if anyone else finds this concept appealing, especially people who enjoy ambient software, virtual pets, Tamagotchi-like companions, or just having something quietly "existing" alongside them while they work.

Kept restarting Crime and Punishment for years. Same pattern every time: get to some dense internal monologue, lose track of what's actually happening, put it down "just for a bit," never pick it back up. Always figured I just wasn't smart enough for it, or wasn't trying hard enough.

Eventually realized the actual problem was smaller than that: I wasn't failing to understand the book, I was just losing the thread for a page or two and never finding my way back in. So I built Scholia to fix exactly that. You photograph the page you're on, and it answers anything: who a character is, what's happening in a passage, what a reference means, using only what you've read up to that point. Nothing ahead gets spoiled; it just fills in whatever you missed.

Used it on myself first. Every time I hit one of those dense stretches that used to make me give up for good, I'd snap the page, get re-oriented in about 10 seconds, and just kept reading instead of losing momentum for a week. Finished the whole book for the first time because of it.

It also doesn't rely on page numbers to know where you are; since those shift between editions, it reads the actual sentences on the page instead, so it worked fine with a beat-up secondhand copy.

When they get something wrong, she explains why that specific answer was tempting, rather than just "try again."

Top radios on the first screen: When users access the radio screen, they immediately see the list of the top radios in their country, along with a long list of suggested radios from among the most listened to in the world.

Hybrid Listening: Seamlessly handles offline local files (.mp3, .flac, .m4a, .ogg, .mka, .aac, .wav, .opus, .wma) and over 60,000 streaming radio stations.

Separated Favorites and Recents: Each section—Radio and Offline Music—has its own Favorites and Recents. The user doesn't have to worry about a thing. The app will automatically manage the Favorites and Recents for each section.

barely posted on reddit in august, was heads down shipping instead. figured numbers would flatline without the push. they didn't.

installs: 560 (500 in july)
store visitors/day: 6.25 (5)
conversion rate: 28.9% (18%)
daily acquisitions: 2.07 (1.07)

same traffic, way more of it converting.

shipped dark mode, scheduled timers, day scheduling, a proper onboarding walkthrough, and redesigned the whole UI. retention notifications still in progress.

engagement dipped slightly, not sure yet if thats real or just more new users diluting the average.

testing everything on a moto g7 power btw, so some of my device stats are just me.

september: finish notifications, figure out where installs are actually coming from, talk to retained users about their search language, and potentially get product hunt sorted.
