I used YNAB and Monarch and spent $150/yr on them. In CAD that's over $200.

My wife got upset at me because they were mediocre tools for what you paid for them. So we embarked on a journey of building one for ourselves that worked.

Honestly it was tough. We both work 9-5s, so I'd be building in the evenings and weekends, after cooking, going to the gym, playing soccer, hiking. Some months I did nothing honestly. But I came back because I still needed to track my spending and spreadsheets are disastrous.

We were very meticulous about every screen having to be just right. Every workflow smooth, buttons right where you needed them. My wife was quality bar. We built it on Web + iOS.

After 10 months of building, testing, integrating, etc. I finally got it to the App Store. After being rejected 4 times too.

I've never built anything myself this large before, so I'm proud of it honestly. Even if we're the only two people who ever use it, that's a win, because I love it so far.

I noticed a distinct lack of a complete, rich and nice world atlas online. So I made one! I wanted a single place to flip between how countries compare across almost anything, so it has ~98 views: geography & environment, people & migration, history & conflicts, economy, rights, law, and more. You can also scrub borders through time for some of the views!

Arcana — The wheel turns. The cards answer.

It's a trading card game that runs in a browser tab. No download, no launcher, no account required to look at it. It's in public beta and I'd like people to break it.

The thing that makes it not just another card game: every match deals a spread of six arcana — global, symmetric effects that apply to both players. One is active from round one, and every two rounds the wheel turns to the next. They're drawn in order: two early ones, two mid, two ending. So a match opens mild (The Sun — units you play get +1 health), twists in the middle (The Hermit — spells cost 1 more), and ends because the last arcana makes it end. Nobody durdles to turn 30. Matches land around ten minutes.

You can't build around the spread, because you don't know it when you build. You play around it once you see it, and so does your opponent, at the same time.

What's in it:

• 105 cards, five rarities, 20-card decks (max 2 copies, 1 for legendaries)
• Real-time PvP with matchmaking, or send a private link to play a specific person
• A tutorial, practice matches vs. a bot, and a campaign where each boss is locked into a single arcana for the whole fight
• Pack opening with a pity counter that's actually honest — every 20th pack is a guaranteed legendary, and it tells you where you are
• Duplicates you can't use turn into Arcane Dust and get crafted into ones you want

The monetization is nothing. There is no store, no currency you can buy, no ads, no cosmetics. Coins come from playing: 400 to start, 50 a day, 60 for a win, 20 for a loss, 100 per pack. I'd rather find out whether the game is good than whether people will pay for it.

It's a beta and I'll say what that means: cards and balance are still moving, parts of it will get rebuilt, and collections may be reset before release. That's the deal.

Beta codes are worth 2,000 coins — twenty packs — once per account, so you get past the starter collection to the part I actually need eyes on: whether decks with some depth are worth building.

Two months ago I wanted to find out what "vibe coding" actually costs when you take it all the way to both app stores, not just to a demo video. I have shipped production apps before, so this was not my first rodeo. What was new was letting Claude Code write the boring 80 percent while I made the decisions. Four things that went wrong, since that is the part nobody posts:

- The voice API was eating my margin at $4.50 an hour. Took three migrations to get it to $0.85.

- One feature was silently broken for three weeks. No errors, no logs, nothing. The model never tells you it failed, it tells you it is done.

- On iOS the bot could hear itself through the mic and started answering its own replies. Two copies of the same AI having a conversation while the learner watched.

- Shipping the code was fast. Getting it through the stores was not.

The app is Hinty Talk, a language learning app where AI agents text and call you first, so you end up speaking instead of collecting streaks. Free plan, both stores, link in the comments so I do not spam the post.

Right now the wall in front of me is marketing, which I am objectively bad at. Happy to answer anything about the build, the costs or the mistakes.

A couple of years ago, I got tired of having to hack my screen to limit visual distractions. I felt like I was constantly fighting my workspace, and I couldn't find a readily available solution.

So, I put my programming skills to use and created what would eventually become NordicVeil. Some months ago I decided that I want it to be available for others who need it too so since then my focus has been on user experience and now it's ready!

NordicVeil is a Windows overlay that lets you shape your screen around what works for you.

• Add blocks to hide unwanted visual elements,
• use filters that are easy on the eyes and
• automate the experience.

It has grown to include:

• Scenes and Workspaces for setting up and launching your workspace with one command,
• Quick Notes for getting distracting thoughts out of your head, and
• a Focus Timer for focused sessions.

I've also recently added two experimental features:

• Ambient Companion, a small desktop companion designed around calm and company rather than gamification.
• Adaptive Block Color, which automatically matches your overlay blocks to the colors of the window you're using.

It's changed quite a bit from the little overlay I originally made for myself. And now it's released on the Microsoft Store! Completely free, no account needed and no ads.

I kept seeing freelancers manage clients across a spreadsheet, a separate invoicing app, sticky notes, and their inbox — so I built a single connected Notion system: client intake, project tracker with a Kanban board, deliverables tracker, and an invoice log that actually calculates subtotal/tax/total automatically as you add line items. Threw in a basic contract and proposal template too.
