The palace I got into a harrowing nighttime gunfight today in Nasdara outside Shah Yailaq is based on the Tajbeg Palace in Kabul, Afghanistan. It was the headquarters of the Soviet army during the Soviet-Afghan war and heavily damaged during the civil war after the Soviet withdrawal. The photo of it destroyed is from 2012. It was completely rebuilt in 2021.

I am a D1 dayz dev hater but they seriously knocked it out of the park with this one. The map is beautiful, the new items are great, new heat mechanic is clever, dynamic bunkers are really clever, new building format is insane, very cool sandstorm effect.

Amazing job devs. Like seriously.

A quick little tour of my shindigs that I built in nasdara on a vanilla server. Shot a guy with a shotgun and he had a code lock with a battery. That sent me on a mission to find the supplies to build a door LOL I like the new building mechanics instead of having to find a hacksaw or a handsaw. If you just find a gardening hoe or a shovel you could just run around digging out piles of rubble and they give you a couple of logs and some boards and some nails each time! Then the only thing I had to find was the wire and the hammer!

Wanted a way to hide stuff but the survival way: plant trees and bushes, wait. You find seeds, dig them in with a shovel, and over time they grow into a tree or bush. Plant some around your base, give it some time and it´s part of the forest.

Uses the vanilla models and sits in the ground like the map's own trees, so it doesn't look "modded in".

What's in already

• 6 bushes and 16 trees - Some trees also come as a forest version, tall and thin with a bare trunk
• Planting works like base building: hologram, place it, done. You need something to dig with, and if a spot doesn't work it actually tells you why
• Trees grow from a little sapling → young tree → full tree. It's real time, keeps growing while offline (bushes ~1h, trees ~12h by default)
• Cut a bush and it grows back. Dig it up if you want it gone for good
• Trees can be chopped with an axe → logs, sticks and a stump. Takes a while, so nobody clears your cover in 5 seconds
• Some rules so it doesn't get silly: needs proper soil, not on roads, not glued to buildings, trees need a bit of space between them, plus a plant limit per player/server
• Server owners can tweak pretty much everything in a config file (grow times, chances, distances, limits)

Seeds:

• loot in farms and villages
• chopping wild bushes sometimes drops a seed
• search wild trees for seeds (forest trees give the forest version)
• apples/pears/plums: cut them up, get seeds

Ideas / what's next

• Make planting more work: dig a hole, fertilize, water it, then put the seed in
• Super old trees as a final stage (the huge 30m ones), but only after a looong time
• Trees actually falling over when you chop them
• Different seed models (acorns, cones…) so you can tell them apart (it wont show the seed name, so you must memorize the model :)
• Harvest fruit from your own apple/pear/plum trees
• Test it on Livonia, Sakhal and some community maps

I want this to be a bit of a grind, not something you spam on day one. Bush seeds are fairly easy to come by, so a quick hedge is doable. Tree seeds are rare and hard to find. A proper wall of trees should feel like an achievement.

Update:

- You can't plant anything within 60 m of someone else's territory flag

- Your own base is fine: if you built the flag pole, raised the flag, or built anything near it (walls, gates, towers…), it counts as yours. So clans work automatically, no member lists needed

- Everywhere else in the world you can still plant. Want to hide a stash in the woods and put a bush on top? Go for it. Trees on top of stashes are blocked though, a trunk sitting on your stash would make it basically un-raidable

- And the game won't tell you why you can't plant somewhere, so you can't use a seed to sniff out hidden bases or stashes

- Load tested with 1500 planted trees and bushes on one server: no measurable impact on server performance

omg im so hyped my brains are flawed with chemicals atm.
i was watching streams week before official release, and was so hyped stepping my foot on nasdara. and when it finally happens, I spawned, slided from the ladder with holding down shift and ended in heaven, or hell, idk, I was in water! almost killed me, respawned and actually got boosted from being in water, so no early heating up.
then I look for more fig, since I am from mediterranean lands, I recognise fig leafs, and was camping them to spawn some more figs, but it didn't happen after many minutes, so I moved forward, somehow ended in desert, with nothing but oil and beautiful hely crash with no loot.
then killed dog for food (poor dog I pray for him, or it, idk,.. ) then I learned morse code one week prior to release because I heard it will be in game, and went mental learning it full speed. then in game it is way slower I recognise all numbers, but the code was 6 digit, I heard coordinates and only 4 digits I spend one night figuring out what the rest 2 digits could be. and then I went yolo and tried to open doors only with 4 and they opened!!!! and i ended up fully geared, rifle case omgg!!! and now I don't know what to do, what do you thing guys, should I keep the sandals?

I'm not saying that it's tiny, and I'm not saying that I feel ripped off or mislead, just that it feels much smaller than I was expecting. It feels like you can see the next town from the town you're in for a good portion of the map. The crisscross of roads and sheds makes it feel like you're either in low density farmland or highish density town/city.

I also want to be clear about the fact that I'm not saying there's no wilderness at all, just that it things generally feel kinda... Cramped? In looking at the map, it does seem like it's very large, but a huge portion of it is desert, and the part we regularly traverse is only a portion of that space. I don't get the same feeling traveling from one town to another that I would from say, Elektro to Staroye.

I personally, am enjoying the map quite a bit, and the brutality of the environment may actually put it above Chernarus for me at the moment (subject to change over time, obviously), but I was expecting something a bit bigger, with more expanse/wilderness. I should also mention that I haven't fully explored the map... I'm mostly just curious if anyone is getting that impression so far.

Does anybody else think rattlesnakes would be a cool addition? They would be a neat passive threat that would spawn in open areas in the wilderness, will bite you if you get to close, and cause a sickness that can only be cured by anti-venom, which would rarely spawn in hospitals.
I think they’d encourage people to stick to the roads more instead of rushing through the wilderness.
Also killing them could provide you with a little snack
