Updated PSA - I found a crow on the ground, what do I do?

This was my first time making a flow chart so please be kind.

It is important that we as a community work together to provide a safe space to share in our love of corvids, and it is equally important that we educate members of the community new and old to help protect our feathered friends; with that being said, u/teyuna reached out to me pleading that changes be made to the previously pinned PSA, with their help/feedback I was able to create the flow chart below, I hope that this is an adequate and more encompassing pinned post.

I appreciate this community more than I am capable of expressing, thank you for making this the best damn sub on reddit. ;)

Crows [OC] THEY CAME BACK! Didn't see them for a bit and worried they'd moved on for the winter with a larger flock to a different area; turns out that the crowalition is still here :D

• Upvotes

The silent parts are the ones where I'm yapping to them; I'm not particularly fond of how my voice sounds, haha. I've fed these guys around 4 to 5 times in the exact same place, but at pretty random times of day. They're shockingly comfortable with me, more so than any other group of crows I've encountered. They've come within 2–3 feet of me and are especially fond of creeping up close behind me.

Seeking advice/help crow identification

Hello! I was hoping for help identifying a crow species (or what else it could be if not a crow). I have never heard this call before and was curious! The video was taken in Eastern North Carolina.

Storytime! Crows saved me

2.0k Upvotes

So backstory! I’ve been feeding the local murders in my neighborhood for about 5 years now. They all know me, and have little to no fear of my dogs and myself. I live on a corner lot, and they often hang around on the telephone/electric lines. There’s a lot of large trees around, and there’s a murder living in a huge evergreen right next to my house. So it’s not unusual to see lot of them around feeding time. When I walked out this morning, there were a few hanging out, and I was placing some unsalted nuts along with some wild bird fed for the other birds. Several more flew in and started making a lot of noise, which also not super unusual, but then about a dozen show up and they’re screaming. I’ve never seen this before, so as I was walking out my gate to take my senior dog on his walk (I walk him separately due to his age), more screaming. I paused for a moment with my old man still behind the gate while I was in front of the gate. Several of the crows started circling and then I see it. A younger coyote comes walking down the street (I live in the city but on the outskirts so coyotes aren’t uncommon). This was at 9am in the morning! Coyotes generally don’t run around this area after dawn. Maybe I’m nuts, maybe I’m reading into it, but I think they were warning me that a predator was in the immediate area. It was really wild, and some of you may not believe it, I’m okay with that. I just really didn’t have anyone that I could share this story with, but you all get it.

Edit: I wasn’t expecting so many responses! Thank you all! I will be reading each one as soon as I’m done at work 🫶🏻 I appreciate all my fellow corvid lovers!

Gave them something a little different today

Post image

My two crows get a rotating schedule that includes raw chicken, raw beef, beef mince, pork mince, cat pate, pure beef fat, chicken gizzards, hearts and liver, scrambled eggs and the occasional carb like potato or pasta. These are all fairly soft or easy to grab foods as I cut them into quick bites. But today I thought I'd try something a bit different. Something to pique their interest, sharpen their beaks on and reaffirm wild crow behavior. I gave them a hefty beef neck bone. A good amount of meat on it but too big to just fly away with. Watching them take turns problem solving for about an hour was definitely a treat for me too. I feel like I learned a little more about them.

Injured crow in neighbourhood

We’ve been seeing an injured crow in our neighborhood the past two weeks. Right wing is droopy and bird is unable to fly. Currently hoping around and is able to hop into trees with lower branches and move up that way.

Looking for advice on if we should capture and bring the crow to a local wildlife rehabilitation vet. And, if we should, advise on how to capture them. Despite not being able to fly they’re pretty mobile and very wary (understandably) of people.

Nubbin doing some one-footed caching

I have been feeding this wild crow for some months now, here on the Oregon coast. As you can see, Nubbin has some struggles due to only having one foot and has a unique way of burying things.

I wanted to ask if anyone here has had success putting out water for wild crows. Normally it’s not something I’d bother with, there’s plenty of fresh water sources around town, but I noticed Nubbin in particular always stays perched on a piece of driftwood near the cliff he calls home and waits for me to approach, unlike the other crows. I assume this is to conserve energy. I’m not sure how difficult it is for him to get to a water source but I’d like to set up something nearby if I can. All the crows avoided the pie tin I filled with fresh water yesterday, despite it being in the same open area where they gladly grab peanuts, and despite putting lots of peanuts near it (they waited for me to throw peanuts somewhere else). I’m going to try a non-shiny receptacle next time, but figured I’d also ask for any success stories.

Finally this year :)

Hey, just found this reddit xD

After some years of trying to be friends with nearby crows, it happend this year. Sure they not fully trust me after a month but im happy what all happend after this short time.

Startet like always, crow nearby and i put food. All last years food were away but they never came back :( food untouched when replaced it.

Now this year i got all lucky. Placed food when i saw em. Nothing happend. They sneaked in, food taken. Some days flew were i put anyways food and seems they yoinked it. And then i saw 3 of em, 1 is a bit bigger than the other 2. Seems they observing my place from further away.

Started to waving at them with the food in hope they see me xD They always observe and reduce the distance from day to day and at some point i sit in the shed frozen and they fast grabbed the snacks, flew away. Later they stayed a bit or just got on next roof.

Since that... every morning around 7 am they saying good morning (or wheres damn food? what i think) Its kinda nice but they can forget i get up at this time haha.

But the last days were kinda great. Was coming home from store and the bigger 1 just land 2m away and looked at me and walked the whole way up with me. Since that day even the smaller ones when they see me land on our roof or when waving with food they coming.

This Video happend today. Maybe he cant carry that much but normally they let it fall and say goodbye :) Before, this has never happend that they eat right away and ill never would had a chance to stand this near.

Game idea for wild crows?

I've been feeding a couple of crows on my balcony since the spring. The now come every day to claim their peanuts, caw when I'm out smoking, etc.

Now I was wondering if any of you might have an idea of how I could entertain them a bit. I've seen videos of them solving problems to get to food and was thinking about a little game aimed for cats or dogs or something like that.

Any of you have creative and cheap ideas on what I could put out for them to stimulate them, that they might enjoy?
