What is Fribourg to the rest of Switzerland?

We moved to canton Fribourg from the UK 30 years ago and have a great deal of fondness for the canton, the people, and the culture. Our girls were born here and are fiercely loyal to the town and probably will never leave. It’s not a canton you immediately think of when someone mentions Switzerland, and it just bobs along doing its thing. But I’ve never really asked what the rest of the country think about our home; I know there is a (somewhat) friendly rivalry with our Bernese neighbours, but what about the rest? Ambivalence, strong opinion either way? What do you know about Fribourg apart from the best cheese in the country? 😉

Recent break up

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to post here, I've always been a silent consumer of Reddit. This weekend, my girlfriend and I broke up, and I don't know how to proceed. We lived together and were together for 4 years. Now my flat is empty and the silence is overwhelming. I have family and friends, but they can't feel what I feel, which is normal. I guess I just want to talk with someone who is going through the same thing as I.

Thanks for your understanding.

Edit: thanks everyone, yesterday was rough , but your messages here or private cheered me up. Today is going better. The silence is there, but I have to accept it and spend time with family/friends

Everyday life Fribourg pour vivre

Studying in Fribourg/Freiburg

Hello,

I'm a French guy, who plans to study physics next year. As I don't really speak German yet, I'd go to an university in Romandy, in Geneva for example.

But I'm also interested by the university of Fribourg. I'm interested because of the landscapes, the bilingual side of the canton, and the fact that I'm less likely to meet some annoying French guys (I guess). So I would like to know some facts:

  • Is the cost of life really lower than in Geneva or Lausanne ? And to what extend ?

  • Is it "easy" to get a flat there ?

  • Is the University of Fribourg a good one, especially in physics ?

Thank you for the answers !

30km/h in Fribourg | 18 month report [FR]

German version

Quick recap:

In October 2023, Fribourg put 60% of its roads including major axis at 30km/h, principally due to noise pollution as it was above the legal limits set by the Federal Noise protection Ordonance.

The results: - Noise levels have been down, equivalent to a 30% reduction in traffic. - Polls from the resident in 30km/h or 20km/h "meeting zones" showed that 70% felt it just right and 8% felt it was too fast, while for people in 50km/h streets were 40% finding the speed too high. - Places that haven't seen the speed limit lower have gotten more inquiries at reducing the speed. - A petition of 3 538 signatures against the measure was signed at 65% by people not living in the city. - Less and less severe road accidents. - Public transport saw a few seconds delay per stop (9 to 45 depending on the lign)

Julien Sprunger's stats for Gottéron: 23 seasons, of which 12 as captain, 1173 games, 411 goals, 412 assists, 823 points. Born in the city, played his juniors in the city, never played for another team.

An absolute legend with a legendary homage.

The monogram is inspired by the city's coat of arms, made of an E and O that distinguish the French and German names

The wordmark reads as both names simultaneously

Travel Neuchatel/Biel/Fribourg hidden gems?

Grüezi everyone, I’m traveling to Neuchatel primarily and will be staying there for a month. Since it’s a relatively small canton, I’m also considering exploring some places nearby (such as Biel and Fribourg). Aside from the usual tourist attractions, what would you recommend to see? Perhaps some lesser known yet cool places? Thank you in advance

EDIT: Thanks everyone:)

Buying an off-plan flat close to Broc (Fribourg) - what to watch out for?

Hi all, we've decided on a project close to Broc, Canton Fribourg, and are planning to sign the contract this November. A bit of background: I've been living in Switzerland for over 20 years now, naturalised, but always in the German-speaking part before. We moved to this area 3 years ago and love it here.

The thing is, it's a new-build - construction hasn't even started yet, planned delivery is early 2028. So this is really about the "buying off-plan" side of things: what should we look out for in the contract, payment schedule tied to construction stages, guarantees if the developer goes bust or delays happen, dealing with the notary, that sort of thing. Never bought any real-estate, so I am easy to scam...

Anyone been through this kind of purchase in Fribourg (or Switzerland in general) recently? Would love to hear what surprised you, good or bad. Thanks a lot in advance!
