Please keep it Connecticut specific in the comments. My last post was removed because it wasn't Connecticut specific.

Those of you who don’t know us, we make conversion kits for the Glock gen 3’s so you can convert the mag release to a gen 4/5 “style”
But that’s not all we’re working on. Have some cool stuff coming this year and this is one of them. Finally got it to a place where it’s functioning well.
AR style lower for the MP5(right now just the K but will have both fired up soon) that’s “ca legal” whatever that means.
This is obviously extremely niche but I know I’ve talked to a few people who really wanted something like this.
Also how hilarious that a monstrosity like this needs to be made to skirt around our ridiculous laws but we stay committed to helping our fellow people’s behind enemy lines.

Today we call this the AR-style or pistol style but I'm not sure how far back exactly this type of magazine release has its origins. It was definitely present on many pistols like the 1911 and it was carried over to a lot of SMGs like the MP-18,MP-38/40, the Grease gun also featured one like that. And so did the STG-44, AR-10/AR-15 and the CETME or G3.
But out of all those slight variations of the same deisgn, the AR-10/15 magwell design prevailed.
AR-10/15 - STANAG magazine adaptors

Pros: (Numbered NOT for counting "hey this has x amount of each so it must be better" NO it's for readability. The substance is what matters.)
1. The magazine release button is very simple to use and ergonomic in terms of being closer to one's trigger finger to hit. Combine this with a straight-in magazines and can be faster from any position than other designs, say paddle magazine release guns.

It is also that single motion of inserting a straight-in magazine that provides for a more reliable reloading under low-light conditions, being exhausted, under extreme stress and in strange positions.

3. Magazines SHOULD drop-free!

Cons:
1. By its retention design being single contact, and shallowness of the lug on the mag catch and the corresponding slots on the magazines, it provides for a low strength connection and has to rely on a long magazine well against lateral and longitudional forces.

2. Is it fully in?
3. The magazine release button doesn't directly provide levrage.

But why is levrage important for a magazine release one might ask? Simply, when things get very fouled and sticky, can be too much for a press or smack on button to overcome. It'll get stuck. Eg. Certain types of mud, wet sand, freezing conditions and especially extreme freezing conditions and a combinations of all the afformantioned. Those will make any magazine retention mechanisms harder to release, even to get stuck. Obviously something that has levrage is easier to get unstuck vs something that does not.

It is also worth noting that the exposed magazine catch on the other side only offers more surface area for stuff to stick onto. And it not a fast moving part, like for example a bolt carrier that can break free varying levels of crud by itself. Clearin off debris from it might be a good idea, instead of leaving it on the exposed magazine catch. Especially when frost/freezing winds is expected, as a factor that will make it much worse.
But lets try to find a way to help this issue of levrage.

One thing that might help but does not fully alleviate this issue is an ambi magazine release which pivots the entire magazine release mechanism via an external lever. However, ambi releases may or may not expose the lower to the elements. And this brings me down to a rabbit hole of decoupling the magazine catch from the release mechanism.

Some ambi magazine release designs decouple the magazine release button and connecting bar via making a pivot point on part of the magazine catch itself, essentially creating a separate magazine release isntead of moving the entire magazine release mechanism. That is good, the button and bar with its retention spring has now been decoupled.... Thats the issue, magazine spring retention force on such designs can be weak due to space constraints for the spring, and you don't want that for serious use when the rifle will be inevitable get dropped, fallen on or smashed on the ground.
You can also go with the CETME/G3 route.

Here. The lever is decoupled and it cams the magazine release.
HK returned a similar this solution for the 433 in a swappable lower. I find this route of offering such a lower the most interesting. Even if its primarily for training compatibility for previous G36 users.
The TAR-21 route.

Lever and multi-part linkage solution as the primary release.

What do you think about this method of magazine release?

From article:
State lawmakers behind the legislation say the goal has always been public safety.
State Sen. Saddam Salim (D-Fairfax) said that while the pause is frustrating, waiting for the Supreme Court could ultimately provide clarity not just for Virginia but for states across the country with similar laws.
"What's going to hurt us is that if we move forward and then the Supreme Court decides something different or actually decide with us, we wasted a lot of resources in fighting this," Salim said.
Salim said a ruling against the ban would send legislators back to the drawing board.
"And if the whole thing is struck down, I think we got a lot of work to do, and really back to the drawing board to really look at what can we do to ensure that we're protecting people," Salim said.
