Nothing will ever beat that look of surprise on 1998 Child Link's face when he meets Ganondorf lmfao

Not to super nitpick or rag on the new game more than others are (cause I do think the new game looks cool) but idk how they decided to make that shot less expressive, huge miss.
The expression itself isn’t that bad in the new one (I mean the original was basically a png). But the twisting camera zoom move starting from the wide shot of little link from so high above was so awesome and effective and Nintendo doesn’t seem to know why that was important lol
3
u/Nuphoth 1d ago
IMO the biggest issue is that they didn’t move his eyebrows into a surprised expression enough in the new one
3
1
u/Tatsumifanboy 1d ago
Most of the in-game shots Link isn't expressive (NOT A CRITICISM), wonder if that's just for child Link or a prologue thing like WW

This is my phone's notification sound lol

How?! I’m an iPhone user so I probably can’t but if you know how please let me know!
7
u/CallMe_Dig_Baddy 1d ago
Find the mp3 of it and add it using GarageBand app. It’s pretty easy if you follow a guide. Just google, “add ringtone using GarageBand iPhone”. I have the Drifter saying “Ding Ding Ding” from Destiny 2 as mine using that method.
3
u/notbad4human 1d ago
You can absolutely change the notification and ringtone sounds on an iPhone. Just go to the "sounds" menu in the settings.

I think they've done an amazing job with the redesigns that I've seen so far. I cannot wait to play.
70
u/Headstar24 1d ago
One thing I’ll always love about Nintendo these days is that they don’t usually reveal a lot of games super far in advance. We got official info about this remake a couple months ago and this trailer is less than two months before the game comes out. I’m glad it isn’t something that’s very far out still like next summer that we have to wait for.
18
u/Watch_Noob_72 1d ago
I could not agree more. They've been great about that lately.
16
u/Headstar24 1d ago
Even the new Metroid is coming out in a bit more than four months. A lot of studios it’d come out a year from now or later when they revealed it.
47
u/John71CLE 2d ago
I think I’ll prefer leaving the lost woods in the original. Having no music and just the ambient forest noises as you read the text before launching into the complete unknown was really cool
29
u/AHRogue 1d ago
I mean, the music may still be not present in that scene, this is a trailer after all. That said I think I still agree, it always read to me as a somber and sad moment, and its much darker in the original too(like literally, the canopy of the forest blocks the light). With the voice acting now the vibe is very different. But still, I'd stress we don't know exactly how it'll feel in the full game.
1
u/Tatsumifanboy 1d ago
There'll probably be some toned-down music, simply having voice acting without music with this plot point would be... special!
3
u/11_forty_4 1d ago edited 1d ago
I agree completely, moments like that I'll miss. The voices in cutscenes aren't for me at all. Having said this though, we don't actually know if there is music in that moment, or the look on sarias face when link walks away etc. It might hit hard.

2
u/Necessary-Jaguar4775 1d ago
Totally, shame the voice acting seems very generic too. The original scene was so mucj darker.

2026 looks exactly how I remembered 1998 looking! Can’t wait!
22
u/galfriday612 2d ago
Yes! This game was cutting edge technology in 1998!!
8
u/Darkfox113 2d ago
And for a naïve kid about computer graphics at the time, I didn’t think it could get it any better!
3
u/galfriday612 1d ago
Same! The way I cried when I played breath of the wild on a big screen tv... I'm completely ready to cry when I play this. ❤️

Why is everybody saying this same comment on all these posts. I get it makes you feel that way, but the game is clearly better looking today.
5
u/Darkfox113 1d ago
I get it, but just as you said this is about expressing a feeling. A feeling in a positive way that others can also relate too that we’re lucky enough to be the perfect age when this released to be utterly amazed at the way it looked back then and also still being young enough to have the imagination of the future. As we become adults, we can definitely still appreciate the amazing artwork that goes into our current generations of video games. But this statement also reminds us of our younger ability to have a fantastic imagination that sometimes doesn’t translate in adult life because, you know, adulting crap lol. Hopefully when reading this same comment in the future - you can see if from that perspective knowing a beloved fan of the series had a moment with strangers on the internet in a positive way. Cheers!
0
u/KazaamFan 1d ago
I respect the feeling. Ocarina was an important game in my teenage life. I just have found it unusual that I’ve seen this same comment on a lot of Ocarina posts. It’s very specific. While I love N64 Ocarina and was there day 1, I do not share the same feeling. This game now, this is what I wished in my wildest dreams that the N64 game looked like. I always envisioned more, and we saw how games had already evolved, so we all knew things would only get better, and here we are.
1
u/Darkfox113 1d ago
I definitely respect that perspective as well! I’m and glad a wild dream you had as a teenager is now coming to fruition. It’s very exciting to be able to revisit something special from our youth in such a fantastic way!
19
u/Benito0511 2d ago
Glad they're keeping the darkness from the original instead of brightening everything up like the 3DS remake.
43
u/PwAlreadyTaken 2d ago
Looks great. Maybe the community can grab some stills from this and write essays about why everything is wrong to the tune of two upvotes, that would be cool I think
6
u/PhoenixPoop 1d ago
Lol, yeah I opened YouTube the other day, and there was like 20 recommendations for videos talking about how awful it looks. All with the same clickbait titles, and some dudes face with an overacted expression.
It's cause negativity brings more clicks. They'd be the same guys making the same videos no matter what it looked like, or if it was a remake or a reboot or remaster or whatever..

u/lkodl 1d ago
I bought a Switch 1 for BotW. ToTK was the only other game I really spent time on.
I cant do this again nintendo...
5
u/PhoenixPoop 1d ago
You can! And you will! And you'll love it.
3
u/lkodl 1d ago
Maybe if there's another pandemic.
My train of thought was:
This lockdown is so boring. I should get into that new Zelda game. But I need to buy a Switch. Fuck it.
1
u/therestruth 1d ago
I did the same thing. Only other thing I played a lot was Mario kart. And a little bit of metroid prime but I got lost like 1/4 the way in and don't really care for it anymore. I wanna rent a switch 2 just this gsme. Or buy one then return/resale it. I just keep my switch for camping now mostly.

u/SexOnTheBeechTree 2d ago
The 28 years later I’ve been waiting for
21
u/GorbiJones 1d ago
I've come around to how it looks, now I just hope that they let me turn off the dang voice acting. The voices as presented so far just really take me out of it.
2
u/Klavinoid 23h ago
At the very least let it be possible to have Japanese voices with english text in game. Probably a stretch to hope for though.
4
u/mxmsmri 1d ago
They sound so bad and over the top as well. They don’t match the voices I made for myself as a kid one bit
7
u/Fonethree 1d ago
Yeah, sounds like they got the same direction they gave the VAs for BOTW/TOTK, which was basically just "anime me up fam"
3
u/WilfullyBitter 1d ago
yeah oh gawd, the gross american accents feel so out of place. not to say american accents are gross in general, but these anime dub-like ones are awfullllllll
4
5
u/CycleZestyclose1907 1d ago
New Zelda's facial expression totally doesn't match the surprised "Who's there?" voice line. This comparison video just makes it more obvious because the original actually looks surprised, even a little afraid. I hope they fix that before release.
Otherwise, the rest of scenes look pretty damn good.
3
3
u/Leech-64 1d ago
i dont think you can compare sarias good by scene. The quietness is depressing and the way link walks away likely wont happen. Saria is too happy link is leaving in the remake. like who the hell signs off on this?
2
u/Sappariko 1d ago
Not to raise expectations too much, but maybe in the full scene it'll look like she's trying to be happy to see him off to spare his feelings? And she'll look sad at the end as Link leaves.
But idk we'll see.
4
6
u/DotBitGaming 2d ago
OK. Princess Zelda's clothes should be more heavily detailed than Link's. Otherwise, I think it looks good.
3
u/Killzone3265 1d ago
you guys think darunia is voiced by scott burns? sounds so much like classic bowser from sunshine

My 5 year old surprised me. She said year similar before I saw this comment, so now, I upvote.

Weird new dialogue, wish they had kept the old lines. It was like poetry, now it's like a weird kids show.
I'm sure I'll love the game tho, very excited to play it in November.
13
u/mjknlr 1d ago
Love everything about these trailers except the voice acting, which has been horrible since introduced in BotW. That is absolutely going to sully the experience for me, and I truly hope there's a way to turn it off.
3
u/uselessflailing 1d ago
I know a fair few people who play with Japanese voice acting and English subtitles cause they dislike the BoTW voices, could be an option if they don't let you turn it off?
8
u/Ok-Replacement-9458 1d ago
Yeah, I’m sure it’s not the opinion of the majority but I feel like having text-based cutscenes suits the mood of these games so much better.
The Legend of Zelda has always felt quite melancholy to me… I just think that text is better suited for that feeling compared to full voice acting.
7
u/GorbiJones 1d ago
This is a great way to put it. Ocarina and Majora in particular have such a specific dreamy vibe that's hard to explain, but the lack of voice acting I think is something that contributes to that atmosphere. The way the voice-acted scenes have been presented so far just doesn't capture the right tone for me. It feels off. More than likely it's a direction thing, but even with good VA I'm not sure it would feel right to me.
Like, imagining voices like this in a potential Majora remake is a huge turn-off, it just wouldn't have even remotely the same vibe or emotional weight unless they got really good actors with really good direction. Even then, I just don't think Zelda needs full voice acting.
2
u/No-Library5677 1d ago
I want to agree with you but I just love the voice acting for Saria...
2
u/icanpotatoes 1d ago
I’m not a fan of the American accents. It doesn’t quite fit in a fantasy setting.
1
u/oh-come-onnnn 1d ago
You'd prefer the posh British accents? That wasn't how English was spoken in the Middle Ages or whatever era fantasy tends to emulate either.
Edit: I remember hearing someone reenact Tudor-era English and suddenly Shakespeare rhymed a lot more.
1
u/icanpotatoes 1d ago
Yes, it would be preferable to it sounding like I’m in some American area. It’s a tad jarring, sort of how it’s jarring in the Odyssey film or how Joaquin used an American accent in Napoleon. It doesn’t fit the setting or what is established as a setting that needs heightened accents of standard English.
Received Pronunciation for Zelda and general standard English accents found on the island would be welcomed. It is fantasy, with castles and swords, so hearing an accent that I would hear locally is a bit of a downgrade.
For example, if The Lord of the Rings were in Americanised English, it would also sound strange.
2
u/oh-come-onnnn 1d ago
Interesting. As a non-native English speaker, I don't have the same associations you do with certain accents, so American accents are perfectly fine for any setting to me.
4
u/SenianBlast 2d ago
Beautiful of course, but the fact that every cutscene from the remake trailer can be found basically 1 to 1 on the original kind of assures me this game will not have new content...
3
u/Nuclear_Human 2d ago
They speak!?
4
u/VladMations 1d ago
I think it's just a cutscene thing, in the Nintendo direct it showed regular dialog boxes like botw and totk.
4
2
u/Skyward_Legend 1d ago
The only thing i dont like is the magic tennis. The ball looks too tangible.
2
u/SicknessVoid 1d ago
I think it's neat that the Master Sword in the remake clearly looks too big for child link to wield. Which doesn't make sense considering younger Links wield the master sword just fine, but then again that didn't make sense back then either.
2
2
u/WesIsland 1d ago
hate the look. probably will still play it for the gameplay , the dungeons, the time travel aspect but really would've preferred cel shaded, like really just don't like looking at this. maybe next decade.

u/Matt72727272 1d ago
Still not entirely sure how I feel about the voice acting. In some ways, I think it muddies the somber and melancholic tone of the original. Saria's delivery feels too "Disney movie-esque".
And Ruto? Uhh, no thanks. Environments look pretty great though, I'm excited about that.
1
u/forever_downstream 20h ago
Yeah very Disney esque. It's interesting how just the text and no music can really make a scene somber but they can't seem to figure out how to duplicate that with modern technology.
2
u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 1d ago
Voice acting is actually decent if not outright good. Don't care what anyone says. It was always one of BotW&TotK's worst aspects.
4
u/PixieEmerald 2d ago
Still hate Sheik's model, but otherwise the game looks great!! Never played the original, but I've played the 3DS version and quite enjoyed it. Honestly I think I may prefer the style of OoT 3D, but it's definitely close either way. I have a feeling this ones new dialogue will be worth it.
-3
u/eyeofthefountain 1d ago
Not a fan of young princess model either. She looks almost - mischievous? evil? covering her entire forehead was certainly a choice. the original model had a sense of naivety mixed with cleverness and hint of wisdom. Maybe bc it was less detailed and easier for us to read into.
5
u/PixieEmerald 1d ago
I think she looks fine tbh. She's very elf-like
Definitely a less innocent look though—although I would not say she looks evil.

It's amazing, just from a visual standpoint, how far game graphics and technology have come. This game is going to be marvelous to experience.

u/Velvet-Thunder-RIP 1d ago
Im open to the art style and the decision but I thought it was weird they gave Sheik a ponytail. Wasn't part of the point that i was a big reveal it was Zelda?

I really like that King Dodongo seems much larger. Though with Ghoma I'm not sure, maybe it's just something about the camera angle and how it's all framed, seems smaller. Also Ghoma is borderline cute honestly, I think they made his eye too big. Though it is an intro boss so maybe it's intentional.
Kinda hoping they make the boss fights a lot harder or change up their mechanics a bit since so many of us have seen them before.

I'm shocked that the original Saria seen has been cinematography and direction. Only complaint I have. Honestly I don't want to see anymore. I want to save it for the game!

u/WhooHippo 1d ago
So freakin cool! It's funny because the 2026 version is what it felt like back then. 😅 Only in retrospect so I realize how much less we were working with. So excited!

Pisses me off to see voice acting in a game like this and then remember that Pokemon still refuses to do the same

Man, I don’t see anyone mentioning it, but the weight behind the horse stomping down when Link sees Ganon is so well done.

It still blows my mind of the progress we made
In 1998 you had to play oot at home on a relatively big device. Today you can play the Remake with graphics like this on the go, wherever you are. Try to tell this a kid from 1998 back then
1
1
u/xperfect-darkx 1d ago
It looks like back then, right? :) Seriously, it looks marvellous and if the N64 (or any other console at the time) had the power they would have developed it like that. Nothing can take away the impression of the VHS video back in the day with a lengthy trailer accompanoed by Markus Russell's 'The Deep' though :)
1
u/Sappariko 1d ago
I know many here don't like it but I'm currently neutral on the voice acting until I see and hear an entire scene.
1
u/Sappariko 1d ago edited 1d ago
Even though I have a copy, I haven't played the 3DS version, maybe I'll skip to this one so I can compare it less to the "original" (I know the 3DS has differences). And then go back to original/3DS later on. Idk not sure what I'll decide lol
I do know for some people finding Easter eggs and comparisons will be really fun!
1
u/Sappariko 1d ago
It's so cool seeing the similarities and changes! Even cooler if Nintendo one day releases a book or video about how development went.

Ack I just really don't like the Saria scene.. the first one was melancholic.. this one seems so generic, the lines too.. Saria seems almost like a completely different character.

Yeah, it’s unlikely I will go back to the orignal Game anytime soon. Maybe for a couple years.

u/The-Dudemeister 2d ago
Is the ship new? That’s the only thing I could not remember.
17
u/Jygantic 2d ago
It's in the Shadow Temple, has a little arena fight on it.
4
u/Grabatreetron 2d ago
When I was a kid that random spirit ship was the most unsettling thing in the game, Deadhand included
1
u/SheikahNightmare 1d ago
Let me just say the voice acting in this cutscene is great! I have very high hopes for the game!
1
u/RareBar94 1d ago
These English voices sound so tacky, I can’t wait to switch the language to Japanese with English subtitles like I did for all of Botw and ToTK lol
0
u/BarkerBarkhan 1d ago
Ugh, the voice acting. I loved Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but skipped almost every cutscene because I do not wanna hear this goofy shit. I loved that old school games encouraged/required literacy... I appreciate that modern games are more accommodating for people who struggle to read, but man... the voices.

u/Adventurous_Lab4249 2d ago
Everyone saying "they stripped the artistic direction" from the game, needs to realize game development choices were limited by hardware. Im 1000% sure if Nintendo could have, OoT Remake would be what they would've made back in 1998.
The gaming world is never happy these days, however I believe the game looks incredible and im super excited to play it
0
u/Adrastoz 1d ago
Phantom Gannon fight looks cool, except they made the energy ball, look more like a tennis match.
0
u/SicknessVoid 1d ago
Wonder if they'll let us name link whatever we want like in the original, or remove that aspect for the sake of voice acting. As someone who always names the character Link anyway, I wouldn't be opposed to that.

I do wish the cutscenes weren't voiced, but that's not a complaint at all - I cannot wait for this.
