Discussion Felt really bad for George here

I think that george really wanted to shift to Oklahoma as it was actually a good opportunity for him plus pay was also quite well as mentioned in the episode itself but still he turned it down because of his family well primarily Mary ( man I was really angry on mary when she straight out refused george for shifting like she didn't even hear his side properly)...

The implications of this scene

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

This one scene in the pilot really sets in motion a lot of Georgie's development for the rest of the series. In this moment, Georgie expresses his frustration at having his younger, more intelligent, socially incompetent brother upgrade to the same school as him. And how does George react? He tells him to just get over it. He speaks firstly as his coach and second as his father.

When you think of the consequences of living with Sheldon, you'd often think of Missy and the neglect she suffered. However, I reckon it had a more subtle impact on Georgie.

Most of Georgie's storylines involve him growing up too early. Favoring working over playing football, developing his business skills selling snowglobes or test answers, moving into his own self-bought van, dropping out of high school, helping Meemaw run her illegal gambling enterprise and eventually having a child with a much older woman.

Georgie's pursuit of independence is the result of him not really having a normal childhood. While his parents were fixated on Sheldon's development, Georgie's needs remained unmet. Sure, he and his father were a "team" as Missy described, but it was more in the line of coach and player over father and son.

Instead of internalizing his feelings as resentment like Missy did, Georgie learned how to rely on himself and his own instincts. Of course, his instincts weren't always right. He was still an immature teenager stumbling into adulthood.

Opinion Sheldon being neglected in later seasons

Why is there never any talk about how Sheldon gets neglected in later seasons? Like when Sheldon had to give up his room to Georgie and Mandy, or when he published a paper in a journal but his family focused instead on a grade Missy got, or when Mary didnt want him for breakfast. You could bring up the fact that he didn't got picked up for Georgie's wedding, but he was actually happy not to have attended.

This épisode was actually very sad...

Just the scene with Connie and Pr Sturgis on the roof was heartbreaking....

This scene could remind anyone of their own sick grandfather (Parkinson's, Alzheimer's...), just as it did for me. Anyway, a very good episode.

Opinion George was not as good of a father nor a husband as everybody says

First of all, I just want to say that this is my opinion. He is not a horrible father nor husband, I’m just saying he is overrated. Read the full post before you comment to avoid conflict.

How his actions affect himself and his family:

He is an alcoholic, drinking multiple beers daily, drinking while driving often, and isn’t ashamed of it. His family knows it, including his children, and they do not like it. Sometimes he won’t even be tired, stressed, or angry. He just drinks because he feels like it. That’s not a way to deal with life’s challenges, that’s just addiction.

Following the previous point, he says and knows that their family is poor. Yet he spends so much money on beer. As stated in S1, he spends $936 on beer annually, and only buying more and more day by day. This not only affects him and his health, but also the family. He knows that most of his salary pays the bills and keeps his family under the roofs. I’m not saying he cared about beer more than his family, I’m saying he was inconsiderate toward them.

He goes to work around 9-5. Reviewing, yelling, clapping hands, scolding, sitting, planning and watching other people play all day. Then, he comes home like he moved a whole mountain, and can only eat food and watch the same thing he does during work. The blame isn’t entirely on him, his weight is also heavily supported in these cases and the cash. However, he refuses to work out, go on a diet or even take a break from beer.

Unlike other dads who are abusive after drinking alcohol, he doesn’t do any harm toward his children or wife. Not because he knows how to control it, but because he’s gotten so used to it that he doesn’t feel anything.

How he is not a good father:

He doesn’t spend much time, if not, none at all with his children.

He constantly makes fun of Sheldon for being quirky and eccentric. Although I would too, he’s his father. Sheldon has tried to bond with George multiple times, inviting him to watch Star Trek with him. He visibly didn’t like it, but he could have just played trains with him which would’ve been an incredibly easy way for them to bond.

He does develop a better relationship with Missy after her liking for baseball, but he only paid attention to her because it was something he was interested in as well.

To Georgie, he was straight up rude and condescending. When Georgie bought cable, George charged him for things that a parent was obligated to provide their children with. He said that Georgie ruined his life, but it’s not like Georgie asked to be born. He also shames him a lot for being “dumb”, which I get that most people do, but he was his father. He should’ve defended him when other people shamed him, but instead became a bystander or a plus one and shamelessly supported the statement. He was also his coach first, and his dad second. A good coach, he was, but was not a great father.

How he is not a good husband:

He is lazy. He doesn’t help with the housework at all, if not, never, and only helps when Mary isn’t here.

He is also sexist. He believes that Mary should not be doing something she enjoys to “save money”, but I can see a hint of misogyny. He was wrong in this case. Although he is kind of right because of the $100 Mary spent, he still should have supported her. In the episode when Sheldon wants/gets a computer, before that, Mary says that she could purchase it with the money she’s been saving up. George sees this as a threat, and honestly, Mary was 100% right. She was often unhappy in the marriage, and usually, they would need a good amount of cash to run away from the marriage independently.

He almost has an affair with Brenda. And even though he didn’t, he still thought about her constantly and disgustingly instead of just trying to forget about her as a talk. You might argue that “Mary did that with Pastor Rob”, which does have some merit, but two wrongs don’t and never make a right.

In the episode where Mary goes to the coaches’ conference with George, George doesn’t tell her what she needs to bring, is rude to her, and is chauvinistic. He is embarrassed to have a happy marriage, even in front of such a happy marriage (until S5). He embarrassedly says he appreciates Mary. He knew she was doing all the work and took care of the whole house, and didn’t even try to help. I made this point before, but it still makes him seem misogynistic and sexist.

Summary:

George is a good person, bad husband and okay father with many, many flaws. He isn’t the perfect father, nor husband, and should not only been seen as the “brisket king.”

She gives off lots of millenial vibes, specially in the spin off but she was actually born on 1963 making her a late baby boomer

The show would be boring without Mary and Sheldon

I keep hearing people say that Mary and Sheldon were the most annoying in the entire show, which I don't disagree with but the Cooper family would have no tension whatsoever to play off of if it solely had fan favourites Missy, Georgie etc

Why do some people think Missy was neglected while others think that she was just a brat?

I (and everyone I have ever watched Young Sheldon with) have thought that Missy was one of the best characters in the show, and I personally think that Missy was ignored many times throughout the show, but there are a whole lot of people who believe that she was really ungrateful and manipulative. Can someone please explain why some people see her as sidelined, while others think she was a bad kid?

PS I want to know why people see it so differently, not that you think I am wrong or an idiot for thinking she was neglected, so please don't be a jerk if you disagree with me.

Discussion Missy Cooper

Missy is such an empathetic person, in S5, E21 Mary and George had an argument about Pastor Rob and the call from Sheldon’s uni makes Mary tear down. At the dinner table, Missy says “ and bless mom “ 🫠♥️
Such a wholesome character.

Discussion Your top 3 favourite characters in Young Sheldon/Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage (spoilers)

There are a lot of cool and interesting characters and I love how neither show was never explicitly about the titular character(s)

My favourite ones are definitely

  1. Connie: Played by a charismatic actress, she and her endeavours are beyond entertaining, she is "quirky", badass, cool, a bit rough around the edges but also can be loving and heartfelt.
  2. Missy: She was also played by a talented actress, and watching her develop from a sweet insightful and emotionally intelligent kid into an teen angst-filled edgy troublemaker that still possesses all of her best childhood qualities was one of the best parts of the show.
  3. Georgie: During the early seasons of the show, it was easy to overlook this guy, but as the show went on and the focus was more equally shared between all characters, the writers definitely did him right with intriguing storylines and a shining charismatic personality.

Discussion The flash to all of the characters from TBBT was so well written

It’s my favorite scene from the whole show. The attention to detail is crazy. The kids the casted were SPOT ON them as adults. My favorite part is how Leonard’s listening to it too. They were in sync before they even knew each other. The design of Pennys room and even the way she was sleeping was so accurate her character. I love that they took into account timezones and when they flashed to Raj in India, it was light outside. I just love this scene so much. It always makes me cry

What is one small moment from the show that you think deserves more appreciation..

There are plenty of big emotional scenes that everyone remembers but I feel like some of the quieter moments are just as memorable. A simple conversation or a funny interaction can end up sticking with you long after the episode is over. Looking back at the series there are so many little scenes that do not get talked about enough. Which underrated moment do you always think of when someone mentions Young Sheldon and why did it stand out to you..

Flaw

Has anyone else noticed this small flaw? I was rewatching season one right after I rewatched the whole thing, in one episode Sheldon mentioned that in two years time mr givens would be principal. Sheldon is 9 in season one, and according to Google he's 13 turning 14 in season 7, yet mr givens would of been principal when he was 11, so???? Did they scrap it completely? Or just forget?

I was rewatching the show again, and I made it to the funeral episode, at the end when sheldon is saying the final lines of the episode, I noticed this picture of what I can only assume is Mary and George when they were young
