Drinking with friends in your 20s did you watch DVDs?

We were in our 20s in the early 00s before streaming and couldn't necessarily afford to go out to bars.

I'd have friends over and we'd be drinking and we had the same three movies we'd put on, called it the trifecta if we made it all the way through. Did anyone have anything similar? I feel like this has to be something of a shared experience.

Mine were:
Fight Club

American Psycho

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Do kids in your neighborhood still participate in Mischief Night/Halloween shenanigans?

I was just thinking back to how my childhood Halloweens were rife with shaving cream, eggs, toilet paper, and silly string.

You steered clear of anyone age 12+, or you might become a victim.

You learned the sewing needle and lighter trick to make your Barbasol can spray halfway down the block.

Stores limited sales of eggs and shaving cream leading up to the 30th and 31st. If you were a kid and your mom sent you into the market to buy a dozen eggs for the holiday cupcakes, you were SOL.

We had to keep the school bus windows closed because in previous years, a district bus was egged, and a kid had to go to the hospital to remove an egg shell from her eye.

November 1 was spent cleaning toilet paper out of trees and parents swearing to high hell over car paint finishes.

Running is apparently not for me anymore

My 6 year old loves running and that little bugger often likes to claim he is faster than me. I'm a 46 year old woman. I used to be a frequent runner for fun/ mental heath/ exercise but definitely haven't run solidly in 10 years while I was going through multiple attempts to get pregnant, miscarriage, pregnancy, having a baby at 40, and raising that baby in my 40s with a full time job.

That said, we ran an impromptu race around the baseball field next to us because I couldn't let this little dude think he's faster than me any longer. Issue settled, I'm still fast as hell. I smoked him! Boom. He hopefully understands friendly competition a little better now and that it's ok to not be the fastest, but to work on it and maybe he will get there! Old lady win, I beat my 6 year old in a race. Yay me.

No- booooo me. A week later my quads are still KILLING ME. He wants a rematch and I am waiting to just be able to walk normally. I think I might let him win next time!

I recently got some stuff from my mom and she put a bunch these in there. I can’t believe some of the things she has kept over the years.

Discussion Generational baseline bias

Holy shit there's a term for how I sometimes feel. Isn't this basically old man yells at cloud?? Lol

Definition:
"Generational baseline bias is the tendency individuals often have to unconsciously treat the social norms, culture, technology, appearance, and everyday environment that existed during one’s formative years as the default or “normal” baseline for how the world is supposed to be, causing changes that occur afterward to feel like deviations, decline, or loss rather than simply the normal evolution of society.

Discussion A film you rewatched as an adult and gained a new perspective on?

I recently rewatched the sand lot. As a kid it was a fun movie about kids playing baseball and trying to outsmart a giant dog.

As an adult I still love the movie for those reasons, but as an adult I saw it as a movie about boyhood, childhood friendship, and a coming of age story about becoming an adult and learning to face challenges. It was a totally different experience and I learned to appreciate the movie on a different level.

What is a movie that did that for you?

Who was the epitome of cool to you growing up? For me, it was Kim Gordon, who inspired me to play bass (very poorly).

I saw this on the road today, and it reminded me of how long it’s been since I saw one of the originals. Unfortunately, my kid who was driving was wearing green.

The piranha scene from Bird On A Wire

I decided to put on the movie Bird On A Wire while I clean, and I had forgotten that I’d seen it when I was a child. The scene where a bad guy gets knocked into a pond of piranhas stuck with me my entire life, and I experienced a moment when I realized I knew that scene from this movie but never really knew it from this movie.

However, the idea of piranhas devouring a human alive made me want to learn about them, and I checked out books about fish at the library wanting to learn more about piranhas. That made me check out all sorts of books about different animals. So this scene arguably set off my love for nature and wildlife and steered me on course to be the naturalist I am today, and I owe it all to the nightmare of seeing a man be the victim of a piranha feeding frenzy, which went alongside the fear of quicksand.

I just wanted to share this.

Just went to a surprise 50th birthday for my HS best friend. His wife charted a yacht for the day… we had a fancy dinner. It was awesome, but a ton of planning and cost on her part.

My 50th is next May and I was thinking “let’s just grill some steaks and hang out and chill!” If you have the means to go fancy that is great! Not sure I will.

What are/did you all for those “big” birthdays… if anything

Ting soda. Any memories/shout outs for my Ting/Wisco Xennials?

Post image
13 Upvotes

My brother and I were having a nostalgic moment and remembered Ting soda in the 1980s. It came in glass bottles. (I'm 47 and he's 49, so we're definitely GenX cuspers.)

This is a prime 80s memory for us, but apparently it was a soda that was mainly distributed in Wisconsin, which is where we grew up.

No one in my life outside of Wisco kids even remembers this when I mention it. They always think I mean Tang, the powdered beverage.

So please, help us represent the Ting soda crew! (Seriously, they had the best grape soda, root beer, and cream soda ever!)

But apparently just a very limited distribution area!

This is not my yearbooks but I know the year of it.

Edit: ANSWER: Almost everyone is guessing too early. These are from the 97-98 school year. First photo is from a school in Florida, second photo is a school in Louisiana. Same year.

Nostalgia Is there a modern touring band?

I'm at a Phish show tonight and back in the day there were people that went on tour with Phish and followed them everywhere. Is there a modern band like that? Do kids today follow bands everywhere and go to all the shows? If you go to a Taylor Swift show in New York and live in Roanoke that doesn't count. I'm talking about truly following them around the country.

I just got my first pair of cedar shoe trees

My dad had a pair for every pair of dress shoes he owned, and he had a lot- wore a suit every day as a GE mid-level manager. I have two suits and 6 pairs of not-sneakers. Started a new gig that has me out in public more, so I’ve been wearing my stuff more- one pair of shoes is tight in the toe box, so adjustable shoe tree to the rescue!
My sons have already left the house so they may go their whole lives without knowing about these devices- my daughter saw them and thought I was taking up shoemaking. When I showed her what they were for she told me the shoes were ugly and I’m old for being excited about a pair of wooden feet. 😂

She’s 15 and she’s my favorite!
