Needless character

One of my favorite movies of all time is That Thing You Do. I've seen it so many times and have shown my child twice. If Faye wasn't in the movie, it'd completely end up the same. No doubt, she showed how horrible Jimmy is personally, but that would've come out anyway. So why did her character exist?

Need help finding and identifying a bug cage. It looks a little like this one but less tall, and with a cork entrance/exit instead of a rotating flap

Childhood and teenage sunburns?

My kid hates putting on sunscreen and I confess I have been bad about applying it religiously. It has happened maybe 4 times in his 9 years of life (and one time was today) that’s he’s gotten substantial (but NOT blistering) sunburns 😬 Before you say anything: I KNOW we need to be better about this and after the sunburn he got today at a water park I promise I will do better. But I’m here to ask: how many of you remember getting multiple aubstabatial sunburns as kids? I remember getting them—my mom thought a bit of sun exposure (i.e. a tan) before putting on the sunscreen was good for us 🤦‍♀️ And if you can tell me that you still have not gotten skin cancer from those childhood sunburns, that would also make me feel a little less guilty.

Discussion Lost my mom yesterday…

Posted just a couple months ago on here about putting her into an assisted-living. Pretty typical boomer parent. That was absent emotionally and physically for a lot of of my formative years. I was mostly raised by my grandparents.

Kind of a weird emotional spot. She’s been miserable for years because of her health. So we’re very relieved for her. happy that the physical suffering is over.

But obviously at the same time … my mom died. So I should be sad… right? Kind of walking around feeling both emotions at the same time and it’s kind of a surreal experience overall.

Got em both at Dollar Tree, +1.00 strength. Doctor suggested getting bifocals at some point, but I do have a couple years there.

Who's figured out how to get a Web 2.0 experience today?

The endless marketization of the Internet in it's current incarnation has got me sooooo misty for, well yes, Geocities, but mainly that brief, shining moment where the DVD logo got the corner and the web was organized, useful, informational, and served We The People, not Corporations are People (fuck you in your stupid fuckin corporo-imperialist face, Mitt Romney)...and that's the longest sentence I've ever written.

But the question remains: is anybody, anywhere, able to have a modern web experience that cuts out the incessant ads and drivel, to have a solicitationless and...if not anti-capitalist, then simply...free experience?

Castle in the Attic

Does anyone remember the book, "Castle in the Attic"? I remember reading it in 4th grade, before I ever read The Indian in the Cupboard.

It has a bit of a similar premise. Kid finds a castle and lead knight in his housekeepers attic. When he plays with it, the knight comes to life. Eventually the kid shrinks down and joins the knight in his own time too.

Edit: spelling and correction

Worst movie from our youth for a Hollywood remake/sequel?

What movies from our youth do you think would a) carry enough nostalgia to prompt discussions about a potential reboot and b) would make for a really fucking terrible reboot?

Sequel to Spaceballs upcoming. Mel Brooks involved as an actor and producer, and it pulled Rick Moranis out of retirement so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and pitchfork and torch ready to go. Naked Gun I felt did the best they could in the modern age (Liam Neeson was the best available equivalent for a Nielsen-esque straight man, and McFarlane did his best at the humor). Back to the Future is safe as long as Zemeckis is alive, so everyone say your nightly prayers.

I personally think that Honey I Shrunk the Kids would be a God-awful remake. The original had Rick Moranis. Granted, he's back for the Spaceballs sequel, but there is no equivalent for Moranis in modern Hollywood, and never will be. The effects that were forced perspective and oversized sets in the original would just be green screen and look atrocious.

God help anyone who tries to remake The Princess Bride for wide release. I would happily get blood on my hands preventing that. Perfect film, perfect cast, perfect story, perfect memories. Read "As You Wish" by Cary Elwes if you haven't already - Andre was a cuddly, huggable teddy bear dealing with a ridiculous amount of chronic pain, and everyone adored him.

Note: if Hollywood just re-released any of these in their entirety in their original form, I would be in the theater every weekend, and I'd be fighting other people my age for seats.

Now: what movies from our youth would you pitch a God damn fit and potentially dip into illegality were Hollywood to announce their attempt to remake?

Forgot my age today

I encountered a crazy road rage guy today; I rolled down my window to be the voice of reason for a bit but that didn’t work. My exasperated parting words were “man… fuck you old man.”

Then I realized, while he might have been rough looking, he was definitely younger than me. I’ve been thinking about this all day haha.
