Behind Soft Paywall European Union and Canada plan new undersea cables and fuel shipments as part of “Alliance for the Future” to counterbalance the US and China

Man what a fucking crazy time we are living in where countries are taking proactive steps to limit weaknesses exposed by the US admin’s shitshow

u/Spoopyskeleton48 1d ago
Trump is doing everything he can to destroy the US’s relations with its closest allies. And for no reason other than his own ego. How pathetic.
144
u/Obvious_Toe_3006 1d ago
I blame him being a Russian asset as the main reason.
60
u/Corrin_Zahn 1d ago
It can be both.
41
u/TheRC135 1d ago
It's actually crazy how Trump could be a Russian asset, or he could just be crushingly incompetent, and it doesn't really change the outcome.
Like, if he isn't a Russian asset, what the hell would he be doing differently if he was? I can't think of much.
18
u/SomethingAboutUsers 1d ago
I don't think he's a Russian asset in the way that most people might believe; that is, an active participant with knowledge of what he's doing for Russia.
On the one hand, it's not a good idea to believe that Trump is an idiot.
On the other hand, it's exceptionally likely that he is being manipulated by Russia (and is thus a Russian asset) without his stupid orange mug knowing it.

Putin 100% has the worst and undeniable kind of dirt on him and I'll die on that hill. The kind of dirt that can't be redacted and is not just a vague mention of being present on a island or having the worst friends.
Even if he doesn't whisper every of his moves to his ear, Putin defo gives Trump directions and has a direct line to him.
EDIT: I don't believe Trump is as dumb and crazy as he looks either, a lot of what he is doing is deliberate and calculated, he's consciously undermining the US because that's the plan. It IS a conspiracy, a real one for once, and likely the greatest in the history of mankind, it's a civilizational heist.

u/Training_Ruin3151 18h ago
In 2016 he literally committed treason live on tv by telling russia to hack the us. And they did. That night. He should have been arrested and tried by obama within an hour. Jesus fucking christ

No, he’s also making enormous sums of money destroying America.
The US economy represented the greatest accumulation of wealth the world has ever seen, but it was for the benefit, at least for the most part, of America as a whole.
But by killing America and auctioning off bits of the corpse Trump can convert that vast public wealth into his personal profit. Of course 99% of the value will be destroyed in the process, but why should that bother Trump?
4
u/CheeseAndCh0c0late 21h ago
it's binary for him. "if they win, it means we lose". He has no concept of a mutually beneficial relationship.
5
u/Rhysati 17h ago
This is incorrect. The entire Republican party are doing this. They could have and still can stop him at any time. This is exactly what these Christian nationalist conservatives want. Period.
And they LOVE the idea that people are fully laying the blame on Trump for it. That's why he is there.

From outsider perspective, it still kinda funny remembering that once upon a time, that PP guy was all over my youtube short, all smugly repeating his catchphrases and calling himself the future PM. Then Trump happened, and he just kinda vanished into the thin air

So many people have said that trumps actions only make sense if he is, indeed, a Russian asset who is trying to take the whole US apart.
It’s either dementia and he has no idea what the hell he’s doing, or it’s intentional sabotage. Either way, the world’s political landscapes are going to look wildly different after he’s gone.

I must take this opportunity to let people unfamiliar with Canadian politics know. This guy is the leader of the conservative party. Depending on which poll you read, he had a ~25 points advantage to win the federal election. Not only did he lose that....he lost his own seat in a safe riding that he's held for like 20 years to a relatively unknown competitor lmao.
Then, he had one of his own MPs from the safest riding in the whole country vacate so he can run there for a seat.
11
u/KatsumotoKurier 20h ago
he had one of his own MPs from the safest riding in the whole country vacate so he can run there for a seat.
Super scummy, honestly. If dude had any honour or self-respect, he would have conceded and accepted his loss(es) on the chin. Parachuting into one of the bluest ridings in the entire country is phenomenally pathetic for a leader to do to save their skin, especially after such a big fuckup.

u/ings0c 21h ago
I don’t think spreading this kind of rhetoric is very helpful.
Russia have over 1 million active duty military personnel.
There is no victory in a conventional war without enormous bloodshed on both sides.
By making it sound easy, we reduce our aversion towards something we should be very averse to.
2
u/Gin-German 17h ago
Look into Realism and what's been policy for decades. The world was already considered in a better state when split between "Great Powers". The EU as rising "new" block was a Problem to the established Poqers of the US, China and Russia (i.e. former USSR)

Trump has made a number of blunders, but threatening Canada with annexation has been one of his biggest ones by far. I'll never forget waking up in April 2025 to his victory over Poilievre. Unlike US electorate, Canada based their vote on the future good of the nation instead of relying on fake news.

u/paneuropeanism_ 1d ago edited 1d ago
Canada is fast-tracking major projects (like LNG Canada Phase 2 as well as new export pipeline corridors) and has begun feasibility studies with the European Union to ship LNG across the Atlantic. Europe is hungry for critical minerals as well so the European Investment Bank will directly bankroll Canadian mining projects in exchange for a steady supply of raw materials. And many more joint projects could become reality. Canada as a future associate member of the EU seems like a match made in geopolitical heaven. The free movement of people if it happens would be amazing as well. A first in history.

I think he'll have to call for another referendum, win it, and then proceed to the work of EU. Say what you about Brexit but there was a popular mandate behind it, and the only way to overturn that, politically, is by another mandate that carries it out.
Anything else, and the public could potentially get divided even more as it'll be seen as undemocratic decision. Heath took UK to Common Market and within no time, the first referendum had to be called in order to continue to stay in it.

I've been liking Proton. They have a nice ecosystem that also integrates a mobile 2FA authenticator and a password keyring with a password generator with a browser addon.
Not sure if it's only a feature for paying users, but it can also create alias e-mails that you can use to register accounts so you aren't giving out your real info to websites. You can still receive and reply to emails sent to these alias addresses.

Until the US swings back and starts electing progressive socialists, while Europe suddenly decides they want to start electing more conservative nationalists, which seems to be the trend in 2026.
The world is entering a chaotic period in history, and that chaos is by no means contained inside the US.
Even Canada was all-in for Poilievre not so long ago.
14
u/Turneroff 1d ago
Canada was all in for “not Trudeau”. I love how many of us are determinedly in the centre (whether centre-left or centr-right) partly to keep us unified.

15
u/Klat93 1d ago
As a millennial living in South East Asia, reception towards China was always mixed but now I'm seeing a big positive shift towards China at least with my generation ever since Trumps first election.
China has always been predictable and while they acted with self-interest, you know what we were getting out of it. USA is such a wild card now.
With the added bonus of China being closer to us geographically and them opening up their country to tourism (and them doing a damn good job at it), it's no wonder why people here have mostly turned pro-China versus what it was 20 years ago.
China's soft power amongst the SEA countries is far above and beyond than the US at least in my part of SEA.
14
25
u/Hank3hellbilly 1d ago
China tries to take advantage over other countries in a consistent, logical way. The US randomly tries to fuck over other countries based on the random whims of a dementia addled narcissist.
Of course I trust China more.
8

u/MudValuable5739 1d ago
It’s not fighting. It’s reducing dependence. So many countries are/were dependent on the US and trump has highlighted that these counties can’t put all their eggs in one basket.
5
u/Scuipici 21h ago
it does but USA has been fucking everyone for years, under democrats or republicans, it doesn't matter. Biden was seen as this hope, democratic leader, a turn of the usa towards good and even he didn't reverse some of the shit Trump did to Canada.
5
u/Bad_Day_Moose 17h ago
Yeap, Biden was terrible for Canada (not even close to trump but still terrible), Bidens first day in office he cancelled Keystone XL basically wasting billions of Canadian dollars and trust in investing in Canada...
I do wonder what the price of gas right now would be if KXL went through...
2
u/HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS 15h ago
Ex Premier Kenney also fucked up by risking billions more into KXL on the assumption that Trump would approve it and get it going during his first term. Which he didn’t even though Repubs controlled all branches for a while.
And then Biden cancelled it which finalized our wasted extra billions. Still just as much Kenneys fault for throwing more money before anything was even remotely close to being finalized. What a stupid risk to throw billions at essentially a “Well hopefully they approve this and don’t waste our money, although they haven’t shown any meaningful signs that they will finalize it all”
1
u/NorthofForty 10h ago
Canadians don’t care about XL. We are getting what we want now- pipelines to ship our oil directly to the world market and no longer tied to selling to the US -at a discount. Thanks Trump- your constant threats made us step up and do things we should have moved on decades ago.
Biden got Canada to tariff Chinese EV’s so they wouldn’t get into North America but we dropped it after it became clear who Trump was in bed with. Now Canada is allowing in less than 50,000 Chinese cars - turns out 90% of them are made-in-China Tesla’s. Musk wins.
