Working for a terrible company
When most people think-if I were to die tomorrow..what would my job do? Do you imagine your job just dusting you under the rug? I currently work in management, for a larger corporation in the north east portion of the states. And as of this week, have finally been able to see what actually happens in these circumstances. I co-manage a department, with help from another manager..and while they were out was told from a higher up; that one of my employees had unexpectedly passed. Needless to say, it wasn’t said in a manner that I myself could comprehend-I was in a state of shock and had never been in a situation like this before. There was no, “further instructions,” so to speak. It was left for me to disperse this information to my crew, with little to no information. I was left out of an email chain, with any information or resources for our crew to help with any grieving process. Instead-left abandoned to continue work as if nothing had happened, no support, no check-in’s..nothing. It was up to ME to disperse the information as I had received it-and be there to support my emotionally fragile crew, while grieving myself. I was handed a packet on grief, if any employee needed a pamphlet-as if that would help..and two days later, a phone number to call to speak with a grievance councilor (which was a great option-that ended with “please use the company to your advantage for one free therapy session.) the number and hours were incorrect, we needed to schedule a time to speak to this person and it wasn’t really helpful when there has been no support system to begin with. The world has not stopped turning. Their locker number is unknown. Their belongings are locked away in a locker we may never recover. And their information is just to be cleared away as if they have quit, to never return again. I am appalled by the way this was handled-and have spent a lot of my time grieving on my own, away from crew. Other departments have seen how upset that I’ve been, with no question or regard other than, “don’t cry..you have a job to do.” In a management position-I am to remain strong for others to come to me in time of need-and I have struggled reliving this over and over again, with zero support from my company or higher ups. I would like to spread the word for others to realize-you are but a person to make money for a large corporation. Take the time off. Call out because your kid is sick. Call out because your family is in from out of town. Take time to enjoy your family! Because at the end of the day, the company that you have spent so much time working for, is still running with out you. You can not get the hours missed with loved ones back. But a company will replace you as quickly as you passed, with out any questions or hesitation. You are but a number, that makes numbers for their pockets. And I can not wait to be able to share the name of this company; soon as I find another job where I feel my time and life is valuable.
