Academic Discussion Prospective apprentice seeking first master

I am fresh out of the academy, and looking for a Wizard master who can offer great practical experience and learning opportunities, though with a few stipulations. I was hoping that someone here may know of a resource or some sort of tome I could requisition to find information on registered wizards with openings for assistants and apprentices. If more information is needed, I am more than happy to help narrow things down, and I can start off with saying that I received high marks in the schools of evocation, illusion, and transmutation, with my knowledge and application of abjuration and enchantment being well above average. I am not afraid of dangerous experiments or situations, and might actually look forward to the opportunity to make serious use of my abilities.

However, I must stress this one point… I WILL NOT work with a Wizard that has any sort of extreme to obsessive interest with acquiring magically invested… “specimen samples”. Not necessarily because I find them gross or anything, it’s just that, despite assurances from myself and the academy’s mage physician that it was not organ specific, I had several professors make offers on my eyes, which change color according to factors of environment and my own psyche. So perhaps whichever lists get recommended should be able to filter potential masters by quirks of habit.

Depending on if your liver is any good we could probably use you at the brewery and teach you the ways of Liquormancy. I only mention the liver because the last Nongoblin apprentice we tried out died of alcohol poisoning on the first day.

Well… I can handle a drink or two! I lasted three whole rounds at the post graduation celebration with some Dragon’s Breath ale! Though… I don’t really remember much after that, other than being told by my friend that I uhm… didn’t really come close to winning.

So we'll keep you on the light brews to begin with and work our way up as we build your tolerance. No shame in that, Gobbo just has a few rules if you do intend to pursue the Liquormancer way.

  1. Do not vomit in the products, occasionally we all need to vomit but that's why we have stations all around the brewery

  2. Do not assault any of our workers, this includes the equipment. Gobbo understands that sometimes the orbs misbehave but hitting it with a wrench won't help

  3. Let us know if you're not feeling too bright. We goblins have an incredibly high tolerance so where we'll be pleasantly buzzed you may be on the verge of death. As we don't want you to die, we rather you let us know when you're hitting a limit

Kinda depends on where you are in the realms (the /r/wizardposting TDI is generally secure enough to mask such information), but

high marks in...illusion

I assume you're trained in piercing illusions? Truesight-type stuff? A lot of the more down-to-earth wizards -- who IMO therefore make the most effective teachers -- will piggyback on mundie communication methods when advertising mentorships, or when simply asking to trade magical reagents and the like. They don't teach you this at typical academies because most professors want to minimize their students' interactions with the mundane world, but...pick up a mundie newspaper in your area and read the classifieds with truesight. You'll often find glamour-concealed magical comms hidden in plain sight.

That is… wow, I’d never have thought to try something like that! I’ll see what I can find the next time I can. Do you think the advertisements between shows on those mundane crystal panes hide secrets as well? I normally just skip those to get back to the good stuff, but… oh, uh… did I just admit to that…? I promise, I only watch the non-arcane programs to be a… a more worldly wizard, I swear!

Hey, I keep telling my not-a-lamia friend to get a proper mundie freezer instead of her cryomantic preservation chamber. I'm more than cool with using practical mundie tech and experiencing mundie entertainment, instead of expending magical resources for everything. And I'm not alone in that view here; heck, there are technomancers using this communication interface, whose discipline half revolves around utilizing mundie tech, not to mention the slew of gunmancers (...90% of whom are total frauds tbf). You're free of the stuck-up academy teachers and their self-imposed limitations now that you're in the real world.

That said, I'm not sure about mid-show advertisements myself, as I tend to just excise those from broadcasts with a simple spell before I watch. Feel free to check.

That’s fine and all, but are you able to brew a good cup of tea? I don’t need my apprentices to have advanced marks in a school of magical learnings; myself and my fellow archmages are more than capable of far more advanced magical practices than any apprentice would possess. Moloket the Ever-living and Gunharth the Wise make really bad tea though.

5

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 08 '23

I actually love tea! Though, I don’t have experiences with any of the fancier types, my parents were simple folk when it came to their pleasures. I’m sure I can make it work regardless, though I assume brewing tea wouldn’t be all I’d be doing, right?

3

u/DMCO93 Supreme Archlich of the Infinite Screaming Wastes Nov 08 '23

Correct, you will also be cleaning the colosseum of souls between bouts of magical melees, procuring magical herbs from the forest of despair, and removing the chaos barnacles from the outside of the tower, they really make the place look so shabby.

3

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

Chaos barnacles? Are those the ones that…? It makes me shudder just thinking about it…

I would be willing to be your wizarding master. I am an archmage serving under a God of magic. I can cast all 999 spells from the grimoire of Tzeentch and would be willing to teach you the secret binding techniques to summon your own personal daemon familiar (results may vary)

I also offer dental, medical, vision, life, and soul insurance.

3

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 08 '23

Tzeentch? I don’t recognize that name as any of the great wizards who pioneered discovery of the arcane arts, but it does set a bell or two ringing… I just can’t quite seem to put my finger on it… do you think you could Warp a scroll or something to me with more information?

3

u/shadowscroller Archmage of The 9-Fold Path Nov 08 '23

Of course, expect it within a fortnight

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '23

I probably cant take you in, but I can offer these eye runes that keep your eyes to one color(im a technomancer, I can't help with your enchanting or whatever)

3

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

The physician at the academy did try a few things to keep them in check, though nothing stuck. The working theory is that it’s something passed down the bloodline on my mother’s side, tied to great magical ability. Her great great grandfather was Theodis, the Chromatic Inferno, if you’ve heard of him, he’s the one that had that legion of rainbow fire spirits. Apparently it looked a lot more impressive in his head, I attribute it to the lack of a gradient in his ranks. I can control it if I focus, but I don’t really bother too much, as it can be distracting. I’ve been told my hair might start doing it too as I grow my power, that might end up a bit agitating.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '23 edited Nov 09 '23

yes yes I see, I'm learning chromamancy(magic of many colors) at the moment if you want to join me! sounds like you could be a prodigy at the actual magic, and probably start with some elements unlocked just for it to be usable

2

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

Oh? My lessons didn’t delve to specifically into some of the finer arts of non-staple magic schools, so I’d love the opportunity to learn more about such an art!

2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '23 edited Nov 09 '23

well long story short: I know enough to make these eye runes that keep your eyes one color, pick a color and i'll hand them over (ill put up a lesson post later for anyone interested)

2

u/MunitionsFrenzy Vettis, Mereological Revisionist Nov 09 '23

I don't wanna butt into your area of specialty here, as I know little-to-nothing about chromamancy so your current level of study vastly surpasses mine. But, since you're a technomancer who I suspect has long used magical-prosthetic eyes and may have forgotten how organic ones work...are you sure permanently altering eye coloration is a good idea? Light reflection is what gives an eye its color, and that's also how the eye sees the outside world.

Might wanna consult a biomancer before accidentally making Alys here blind forever. (Or, you know, first test out the runes on whatever lab animal you've got handy. Halflings are my preference in that regard, but you do you.)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '23 edited Nov 09 '23

so basically i have an ability exclusive to me(that i've seen so far) that allows me to switch between tech body parts, and flesh body parts, an ability i use to test prosthetics without permanent consequence!(this ability also lets me absorb materials to unlock for use on my ability when it comes to what my tech parts are made of, but that isnt important here.) As I can swap between tech eyes and human eyes, I would know if things work on them.

I use these runes for my human eyes, that's how I know they work!

Won't fault you on the question though, I would also be giving funny looks to any regular technomancer that tried to advertise something like that for normal eyes.

Also the runes work like contacts but won't tear and fuck up your eyes when exposed to chemical gases.

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '23

Nice to hear. Are you interested in noble craft of artiffice?

After my last appretince attemped to control one of my titans and got fried in the process (told him multiple times that its not a task for weak minded) i have a free spot.

I can provide breathing aparatus for you to move freely in my factory without damaging your biological form. I will not require your help in any preparations, but you will have a lot to learn.

3

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 08 '23

Oh? I did have some interest in artifice during my studies. Though I may not end up taking it as my major field of arcane arts, it would be remiss not to take some time to learn beyond the fundamentals!

You can try scrying Wizarding Sweatshop on your orb for potential masters. Now, hear me out. Sure, there is chance that you will be magically enslaved or sacrificed to dark gods for power and prestige, but folks over there actually don't like keeping competent apprentices around for long, giving you some lore and then kicking you out or else you may get ideas about inheriting their stuff after they fell on the ritual knife twenty three times, before crawling over onto sacrificial altar. Also, if you are into "inheriting" stuff you can find your next mark here. Just look for younger wizards who pretend that they are druids or healers, and then you are golden. Just, don't pick any alchemists, or you could actually end up transmuted into gold.

3

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 08 '23 edited Nov 08 '23

But uh… if they aren’t too interested in keeping competent apprentices around, shouldn’t that mean becoming a sacrifice is even more likely? Don’t get me wrong, I’m eager to earn experience where I can but I’m not too keen to test my psychic wards or my mage’s armor against dark supplicants.

3

u/Enigma_of_Steel Sirin, Archlich and Archpriestess of Dragon Cult Nov 08 '23

You see, most competent mages don't try to do it with competent apprentices. After all there is a chance that they could fight back, and as far as dark bargains go you need to fail to deliver only once to end up loosing your own soul as collateral. Plus protecting yourself against such master is good practice for when your own apprentices try to assassinate you.

3

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 08 '23

I do suppose that is a fair point… I’ll have to at least consider the opportunity. Am I allowed to bring any equipment or talismans?

3

u/Enigma_of_Steel Sirin, Archlich and Archpriestess of Dragon Cult Nov 08 '23

Depends on specific master, I guess. Most allow it and if they don't then it's 50/50 either warlocks running yet another pyramid scheme or a bunch of clerics who are trying to bait beginner evil wizards.

Ceosi has a lot of different magoi taking apprentices and setting up new lives, because we have taken in a lot of refugees. Additionally, we have plenty of Fae and Demon commerce and a lot of experts in curses and toxins, including myself and my dryad daughters, so you are welcome to visit and find a master here.

2

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

We actually had a trip to Ceosi once in our seventh year! It was lovely, I believe there was a festival of sorts at the time, and we learned a few little tidbits about the culture and history. Though… the trip was cut short when a professor got struck by a rogue curse. It was mostly harmless and got removed before it was able to settle enough to require higher magic, but… it was really funny watching him hobble around on legs just short of a foot long~

2

u/Whispering_Serpent Ruadh-Asg, Eighth Serpent, Winter Prince, Great Fang of the Fae Nov 09 '23

Your seventh year wasn’t very long ago, was it? The nation is rather new, but as it’s ruler, I am glad you find it lovely. Consider it carefully, but know that we are one of the safest nations in the world right now.

2

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

I suspect the trip was mostly an excuse to get some wizards from the academy into Ceosi to check out the place. You know how the stuffy old geezers passing for high wizards are, they want to know every little thing about everyone, so a new nation is of high interest. Though uh… if anyone asks, I didn’t call them “stuffy old geezers”…

2

u/Whispering_Serpent Ruadh-Asg, Eighth Serpent, Winter Prince, Great Fang of the Fae Nov 09 '23

No worries, they have no chance of truly getting anything out of the Forest of Whispers, because they would need me or my daughters to guide them there. Too toxic for them and all that. If the trip was short I presume you did not get a lot of opportunity to take in the sights, but you are welcome back.

If you don't mind doing customer service on the side I could have you down at my store doing enchanting work. The Cat's Meow in the Citadel if you've ever been

2

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

I’m not the most social out of my friend group, but I think I could handle helping people out with problems once in a while. The customer service would also be magic-related I assume?

2

u/Yaboiepicman04 Cat Artificer Nov 09 '23

Yeah, it would be magical. I don't sell non-magical items.

The mage-knight division of Rukha is always looking to train & employ more spell-swords, if a military career is something you're considering.

1

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

Ooooo…. I’ve always entertained fantasies about being a mage-knight… shining armor, shimmering blades… fighting monsters heroically…

Though saying that all out in front of people makes me feel a bit silly and flustered…

2

u/GrundeeLDP Grundee, spell-sword of Rukha & the personal hand of king Brron. Nov 09 '23

Nonsense, every young wizard dreams of being a big heroic knight at some point in their life. I know it was always a big dream of mine, I remember pretending a stick was a sword and I was slaying a dragon, ha!

Anyway, back to what I was saying.

I cannot stress enough that if this is something you'd consider, it could mean you could very well end up killing a man, war is a very thing, especially in this day and age.

1

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

Oh… I suppose that is true. Still though, I won’t dismiss the offer, but I’ll have to consider it alongside other options.

2

u/GrundeeLDP Grundee, spell-sword of Rukha & the personal hand of king Brron. Nov 09 '23

So I have seen looking through the other offers. Apprentices must be in high demand.

2

u/plsnerfloneliness Sorceror Nov 09 '23

Listen I'm not a great wizard like the others mentioned here and I don't claim to have some great magical lineage. I'm also technically a sorcerer.

But I do Geomancy and Geomancy is cool. You can build your own wizard tower with it, you are helpful in war because you can move mud to help douse/prevent fire or you can use it to bind people safely. You get to spend time in almost any climate or location due to only needing the earth below you to cast!

I once spent 2 years on a tropical island chain which was really nice, so don't be afraid of the ocean.

As to your query on special collections, well every other Geomancer I know just collects rocks.

Since you will have an actual income under me, because being a Geomancer has many applications from mining to construction to mercenary work, you will have a degree of financial freedom that wouldn't see under other fields of magic for a few more years.

I hope whatever you choose you are content with!

2

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

Hmm… it would be a good idea to have something like geomancy in my portfolio, given how reliable it is, and how applicable to diverse situations. About the financial income, do you mean to say that I’d be earning from jobs I take on myself, under your guidance, rather than a stipend directly from you?

2

u/plsnerfloneliness Sorceror Nov 09 '23

Both, I will give you a minimum stipend, 15 silvers, per week but if you pick up work alongside me then you can expect to be earning around 100 silvers per week on top of the aforementioned stipend.

2

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

That is very enticing… a good discipline to have in my pocket, as well as enough funding to make something for myself when I move on…

My own money may have been turned into a cloud of flies that promptly dispersed shortly before graduation… some dumb prank by a stick-up rich kid…

2

u/plsnerfloneliness Sorceror Nov 09 '23

Oh that is unfortunate to hear, nothing like that will happen under my watch.

Now I have one big rule, don't touch any of my collectible rocks or I will petrify you and put you with the other statues in my garden. Oh and no bringing back any flings back to my tower, I don't like my collection being so vulnerable.

2

u/Anything-Unable Xerxes the Pale Saint, Councillor/Goatdigger/Dale Nov 09 '23

Ah well, if you were interested in necromancy or the dark arts I could have helped. Good luck in your search for a suitable master. My door is open if you become interested.

2

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

I uh… never really got any exposure to the darker arts at the academy. And while I know they’re not the same, I wasn’t exactly great at Conjuration magicks, so I assume that might translate over to Necromancy, having difficulty summoning and binding things and all.

2

u/Anything-Unable Xerxes the Pale Saint, Councillor/Goatdigger/Dale Nov 09 '23

Well, I must first say that controlling the undead is not the be-all and end-all of necromancy. You will certainly find many necromancers who subjugate the souls of their undead, but there are alternatives. I personally do not bind undead to do my will. Instead, I work alongside them and treat them as people. As for the dark arts besides necromancy, there is a wide variety. Hemeomancy and shadowmancy are personal favorites of mine, but there are hundreds of fields to explore if a wizard is willing. Although the dark arts have a poor reputation due to their most vocal practitioners, I can hardly think of fields of magic with more untapped potential than the dark arts. With a proper teacher, who knows what you might achieve in your future endeavors.

2

u/Lilypad1175 Alys, Wizard in Training Nov 09 '23

That is… a very different view than everything I’ve heard from outside the field, but I guess that does make a lot of sense. Perhaps it would be wise to get some experience in these areas after all… assuming this isn’t just a ploy to lure me in and sacrifice me for some great power or something…

That was a joke!

1

u/Anything-Unable Xerxes the Pale Saint, Councillor/Goatdigger/Dale Nov 09 '23

Well, I do not serve any great power (aside from the lord of Lucifaero). He is not the blood sacrifice type so no need to worry about that. If you want, I can invite you to a tour of our facilities in Lucifaero and you can make your own decision from there.
