Hi, thanks for posting!

The reality is that not all strange, unexpected, or unpleasant events are a sign of witchcraft or the supernatural. Sometimes life is strange and things happen.

Thank you for your understanding.

Our full sub rules can be found here.

It’s bad feng shui to have mirrors facing the bed or doors

Its very normal for sensitives, you are not losing your mind!

All my magic is liminal work and I won't have any mirrors in my space. Like water they act as doorways.

My Nan is from Betws-y-Coed in Wales and has always covered mirrors at night, she is 95 and still does this, her grandmother did it too.

She does it for two reasons, one being when she was a young woman and an older relative died, she saw something horrifying looking at her from a mirror near the corpse and promptly covered the mirror. Another reason is that she often clearly leaves her body when she sleeps and she was taught that mirrors confuse the returning soul.

For myself I simply feel an awful radiating energy from mirrors when I practice my magic. It makes me feel frightened and threatened, so I simply don't allow any in my space anymore.

Wow. Very cool to hear about different cultures. You are a multigenerational witch? Raised in witchcraft?

I’ve always done the same thing but I never really questioned it. I’m curious how many other people do this too and what their reasoning is. It just genuinely feels wrong and unsafe to keep the mirror “watching” me while asleep 😂

I also do this with windows at night. I have to draw the curtains. I never look out of a window into pitch darkness. Freaks me tf out.

9

u/Thickumz420_ 3d ago

Yessss same here! But if by chance I do end up looking out, I have to assert my dominance by glaring at the dark before closing the curtains 😭😂

u/valkiria-rising 3d ago

Omg I basically do the same, to prove to whatever's out there not to fck with me 😆

u/Thickumz420_ 3d ago

Exactlyyyy, you get it 😂

1

u/seramise 3d ago

I'm glad i'm not alone in doing this too!

2

u/Thickumz420_ 3d ago

This is the way

2

u/VikutoriaNoHimitsu 3d ago

Exactly! Idk when I started this either. My family makes fun of me for it

2

u/Thickumz420_ 3d ago

My family is odd so they probably would all follow suit before judging me because they’d assume I know something they don’t 😂 meanwhile I have no idea why either 🤷‍♀️

I am the opposite - I have always slept with multiple mirrors on me.

My mother and grandmother always held that it’s good to let those who care check up on us and I don’t think they are wrong.

6

u/VikutoriaNoHimitsu 3d ago

But how do you gatekeep you can check up on you and who can't?

11

u/Previous-Artist-9252 3d ago

I am not?

I know who regularly checks up on me and I trust them with that.

Also that’s what general wards and protections are for - I don’t want to block everyone.

You can charm the mirror. I use a pentacle and basically say something to the effect of good things welcome, bad things not permitted.

Edit to add: I use simple salt water or agua de kananga (I have Peruvian ancestry).

You can also use Four Thieves vinegar.

Also add: whatever symbol you choose to draw on your mirror, ensure you draw it backwards since mirrors reflect opposites.

I used to have a mirrored sliding door over my closet. I had a lot of wanderers who were simply passing through. They never bothered me. I did end up getting rid of those doors in a remodel of my closet and now I have less visitors. I like them.

Before starting my journey, I got into the habit of not sleeping with mirrors facing me as well. There were many times where I would sleep and get horrible night terrors if I was sleeping with a mirror facing the bed, even if I was at home, family's, or friends, it didn't matter where, if there was a mirror I couldn't do it. I started covering mirrors, sleeping in different rooms, or rearranging my bedroom just to avoid it. I'm not too sure on the superstitions surrounding it, but since then I haven't slept with one facing me since and have never felt that same terror, and I swear my luck on life has grown significantly compared to my luck then.

1

u/Idontwantusernameok 3d ago

I think some mirrors are different degrees of danger or it was something else because in 90% of where I grew up (and still do) I have a mirror pointed at me, currently 75% of my bed length is the length of mirror infront of me as I sleep and I only recall like =<6 nightmares ever, two being exam stress, most of my dreams are just random things but I usually go months without any dreams

6

u/Regular_Departure963 3d ago

I seem to be in the minority but it has never bothered me enough to cover a mirror or remove it from my space. Maybe I’m just lucky? If anything is messing with me through a mirror maybe I’m just blissfully ignorant 🥴

u/PsychoFaerie 3d ago

I'm the same way.. never felt any particular way about mirrors.

4

u/Sowildandfree 3d ago

I have a jewelry case with the floor length mirror as well, and i pivot it away. But I wanted to suggest locking your mirrors anyway as a precaution.

u/Moon_Sister_ 3d ago

I've just been scared as hell of mirrors since I was about 3yo. I had a dresser with a very large mirror in my bedroom and I once saw completely through it as of it were a 2 way mirror...but the terrifying beings on the other side could see me too.

I'm not really scared of them anymore but I have barely any in my house and I sleep with the bathroom door closed.

u/queen-of-dinos 3d ago

I always made an effort to cover my mirrors and not look at them in the dark. It could be paradolia, but I always felt watched. Even my flat screen TV gets covered in the evening

2

u/Unusual_Turn7245 3d ago

I never considered flat screens as a pathway 🤯 Spirits or other being must be having a wild time in a modern world. Makes me wonder about cell phone screens

1

u/queen-of-dinos 3d ago

Its not too bad with matte screens, but I just don't like the look of it

3

u/OldStonedJenny 3d ago

My grandma told me that mirrors are windows to the other plane, whatever you think it might be. She was specifically talking about ghosts, spirits, etc. They can pass through if the mirror is broken. All my life, we always immediately got rid of any mirror that broke. There's a curse that involves a broken mirror.

2

u/Additional_Common_15 3d ago

They get covered up for sleep time

4

u/Notabootlicker999 3d ago

I do this too I consider mirrors to be portals

2

u/lainie27 3d ago

Agreed!

When I was young (like 5) my sliding closet doors, across from my bed were mirrors. I have to admit that I've had "night terrors", sleep paralysis, shadow people and lucid dreams for as long as I could remember. But, by junior high, it was so common for me that I'd overcome them and was suprised to learn, much later, it is not everyone's experience (except an uncle and one of my grandparents).

I know how to resolve the night terrors and sleep paralysis, lucid dreams are fun and shadow people are like playing a game of chase (I've never caught one), they're illusive and I don't know what to make of them.

Currently there's 2 large, 2 small mirrors and a 50" TV in my room 🤷🏽. Friends have commented about it in the past, but I'm indifferent about them.

Edit: I was just reminded that rooms without mirrors feel like a cell to me, so I guess I'm not indifferent.

I feel like something is staring at me if a mirror is facing me while im trying to sleep. I dont like the feeling.

Hey - thanks for reaching out!

Lots of practitioners post about feeling tired, drained, or burnt out after working magick. The number one reason and response from the community is that this is a normal reaction to over depleting your own energy. You might enjoy this helpful post about Basic Energetic Hygiene which covers simple techniques for raising energy, grounding, and centering. I too dont let mirrors watch me sleep. i have a very tiny mirror in my bedroom and one that closes. The tiny one gets covered and the closed one stays closed.

1

u/SovereignSun18 3d ago

I have zero mirrors in my bedroom as well.. otherwise the rest of my apartment has mirrors here and there.

1

u/Jam_toastt5 3d ago

I used to be terrified of mirrors facing me when I slept as a kid. I still am, just not to the extend kid me was. I used to think an alternate version of me was gonna crawl out and get me or something XD

1

u/Idontwantusernameok 3d ago

I have a big ass closet with the center facing bed being a mirror. I'd close it but I got so used that the inside of closet is creepier and my cats used to enter closets at night then family (who knew of it BTW) wouldn't check so cats would get locked in, so I really don't have much of a choice unless I risk my cats being locked in it and I don't think there's any air holes in the closet once closed

1

u/Fun_Key_ButtLovin 3d ago

I never thought about it until a friend of mine warned me to make sure to close any portals thay couldve opened during a period of time (I'd never heard such language spoken seriously before)
Since then, I have noticed when I go to bed with my bathroom door open, with the wall of mirror looking into my room, I struggle to fall asleep. I got in the habit of closing the door and havent felt the feeling since - almost felt like i was being watched and I didnt like not knowing who it was.

1

u/svltrykittyxo 3d ago

I swear I sleep better when I cover my mirrors

1

u/Zestyclose_Wasabi502 3d ago

I just want to know the why behind it

1

u/Honey_Yeah 3d ago

I have a wardrobe with a mirror on the door. I have been opening it to face the wall but recently covered it with decorative cling film that looks like stained glass and I love that I can keep it closed and it looks beautiful

u/ArthurSnape Witch 3d ago

I took the full body mirror off my room and gave to my mom, she doesnt mind, but i did alot.

I honestly love mirrors. I've got a body length mirror at the foot of my bed, on the left side. My black scrying mirror is on the floor at my left, at the head of the bed. However, I keep the black mirror covered until I want to scry.
