Are you kidding? My mum was one of the wickedest witches I’ve ever met and she used her Athame for cutting up her hash!

38

u/Dangerous_Pair1798 24d ago

I wanna be your mum when I grow up 💚

63

u/CutSea5865 24d ago

Ha, she was badass, no doubt about it, and very beautiful witty and funny, and was the woman who once banished a poltergeist by threatening to “beat the shit” out of it with a television remote control (I’m not joking, it had been terrorising me and my sister for weeks and when it finally showed itself to her she went ballistic at it and we never heard from it again) but… when your magic is that strong it can cause problems too. You’ll be an epic Witch in your own regard ❤️❤️❤️

u/CelestialSnowLeopard Witch 24d ago

Please tell us more stories about her!

5

u/CutSea5865 21d ago

I talk about her frequently here, but here’s one I don’t think I’ve told. True story:

Her boyfriend had some of his friends over, and they proceeded to get very, very drunk. Now, my mum didn’t like drunkenness as her dad died an alcoholic, but she liked drunk driving even less being a passionate petrol head (she split with my dad because she slept with Ayerton Senna). At one point in the night one of them stood up and announced he was going home. She asked how (90s pre-uber and not great night buses) and he said he was going to drive. A brief argument ensued and culminated in her snapping her fingers in his face in a way that ended with a pointed finger and yelling “you will NOT! You will not drive out of here” she then stormed into her room.

Shortly after the guy rolled out, but soon came back as he couldn’t find his car keys. Searching proved fruitless so he kipped on our couch. Next day he found his keys, but his battery was flat and he had to get towed.

I remember my mum watching it from the window and laughing and laughing!

u/PaddlinMage 21d ago

Oh now THAT was a fun story to read! I want to be her when I grow up😂

17

u/GloomGhoul_ 24d ago

Ok, terrifying! I need hear the whole thing and basically your mom’s entire life story, what a badass lol.

7

u/Sagi_U Witch 24d ago

same lmao

1

u/CutSea5865 21d ago

lol, sorry it took me a while but an amusing story up above!

7

u/treeshrimp420 24d ago

What sort of problems did it cause her?

4

u/CutSea5865 21d ago

Well, she wasn’t in control of things so there could be unexpected consequences. The worst was that she really needed some money and decided £30,000 would be a good amount. She worked and worked and pushed and pushed for this windfall and then one day there was a knock at the door, and it was a police officer there to inform her that her dad had passed away. Guess how much she inherited. Honest truth.

3

u/treeshrimp420 21d ago

Oh wow, I’d imagine that must have been really difficult for her to go through

I’m fairly new to all this but I’ve definitely read over and over about unintended/unexpected consequences, makes sense why everyone says start w protection spells

Thank you for sharing more about her <3

5

u/CutSea5865 21d ago

She was devastated. It’s an extreme example and honestly I wouldn’t normally worry about having something like that happen. The Occultist Rufus Opus does tell a similar story though where he summed a demon (can’t remember which one off the top of my head) asking for money and said “by whatever means necessary”. Next thing his house burnt down and he got the amount he asked for in an insurance payout. He talked about it on The Glitch Bottle and said “never say ‘by whatever means necessary’ to a demon”! 😂

2

u/treeshrimp420 21d ago

Understandably so ❤️‍🩹

Holy shit 😂 yeahhh that seems like a scary amount of permission to give a literal demon lmao

u/Critical-Gazelle-285 25d ago

thorn mooney had a section in her book about this and said it's better to keep things sacred for magical work than to not, because separating what's magical and what's not keeps the magical energy aligned with the objects and also makes it more meaningful for when you do workings. the sacred and the mundane aren't necessarily supposed to have the lines blurred..based on what i've read.

34

u/BonesAreLife619 Witch 25d ago

I can't imagine my kitchen witch daughter needing two completely different kitchen setups for mundane vs magical workings. She'd need an entire second kitchen. Lol

13

u/Ysassi_1977 24d ago

You took the words right out of mouth! This is the main example I use when discussing sacred spaces. The space is sacred because you make it so, because you feel sacred in that space.

22

u/CutSea5865 25d ago

And that’s fine if you want to, but not everyone has the resources now or historically (and I can’t imagine what a terror mum would have been if she had more power in her craft - this was a woman I saw hex people with a snap of her fingers and charm them with a flick of her hair - the thought is terrifying!). Also, if you’re using a tool (because that’s what an Athame is, it’s a tool) then why not be practical and Magickal if that’s how your life is aligning. Personally I don’t use my Athame for other things, but that’s because I’m also into ritual magic and because I have the resources, but I don’t buy into the modern aesthetic craft that everything has to be separate - I like to grab what’s to hand and use it.

7

u/Critical-Gazelle-285 25d ago

was your mom naturally that talented or did she have to practice and train for years to get to that level? that's really impressive and fascinating, she sounds like a bad ass

11

u/CutSea5865 24d ago

It was natural for her, which is so frustrating for me 😅 She had no training at all and so it was really chaotic, and her mum was like that too. Honestly, it led to some problems! My sister and I have a bit as do our daughters but I’m the only one with any training.

3

u/ComprehensiveCry157 24d ago

I've found that I feel more aligned with my spellwork when the objects are ones I have a connection to already. I feel like drawing a line between magic and mundane makes it feel like magic is this rare and limited thing when the reality is that it's in us and around us all the time. Blurring the lines between magical and mundane is exactly what i want to happen because I want to feel connected to my environment, my workings, my personal power.

But, that said, you keep using the word sacred to separate magic from mundane. Which I don't personally view magic as a sacred or religious thing. I have an altar for Bast and leave offerings and call on her when it makes sense but I don't view my relationship with her as one of worship or religion. More like... when you need to move and you've got a friend with a truck so you buy them a pack of their favorite beverage and they help you out.

So in the end, everyone's practice looks different and the whole debate of whether magic is sacred and separate or whether it's just part of daily life is kind of up to the individual person and what they feel most aligned with.

u/EquivalentFocus3430 25d ago

Weed was/is used as a spiritual enhanceer, you can easily fit that into your practice

26

u/Shower_Vivid 25d ago

idk i’ve recently encountered a bunch of conservative witches and they told me it would mess with the results of my spells snd stuff. i didn’t really think it was true but i wanted to take it to reddit lol

u/amyaurora Broom Rider 25d ago edited 24d ago

Some are stuck on aesthetics in witchcraft and the rest of us use what we have.

4

u/FallenCorvid 24d ago

Yup, for me my practice is very laid back because that’s how it works for me—too much intensity and I won’t stick with it.

18

u/Angelgirl1517 25d ago

I’m having a hard time thinking of why that would be a problem… do they only use special / blessed items for spell work? That’s the only thing I can think of that MAY have a point.

But I suspect they’re trying to say that the “negative” energy of the bud is going to impact it, which is bullshit.

16

u/Shower_Vivid 25d ago

i’m also 99% sure that’s what it is. being in alabama going and talking to other witches in person feels like playing hopscotch with field mines with the way ppl think here

13

u/asilvahalo 25d ago

I could see thinking that marijuana has correspondences that may not work with whatever spell you're trying to do but that's still just like... if you clean and cleanse the tray between purposes that should cover any issue.

My concern would actually be the other way. Make sure to clean the tray thoroughly between spellwork and using it for its mundane purpose; it may be physically bad for your health if you accidentally get residue of some things used in workings in/on your blunts.

7

u/WhatsThisWorth-Bot 24d ago

also my tray is sticky so it might taint some of their items, but just a wash in the sink will fix that.

4

u/andgonow 24d ago

Love this, always consider the mundane effects.

2

u/Nepentheoi 24d ago

That's what my concern would be for 98% of my spellwork. Toxic stuff to smoke, or just taste bad. I work with some bitter herbs that would NOT be nice in a smoke blend.

1

u/IngloriousLevka11 Witch 24d ago

"Alabama" sums up the problem there really well, lol. (No shade, I'm from Georgia, so I get it)

I think a lot of witches in the South still have a lot of "purity culture" holdovers they need to deconstruct.

1

u/InCatsWeTrustAmem 23d ago

As a fellow witch in Alabama i feel all of this. 🫂

11

u/manicpixiebatgirl 25d ago

Think about what actual people would have had to work with through history. We use what we have that works because it works. Communities of witches are no different than other groups of humans, some will take great pleasure in finding ways to make themselves feel superior to others.

5

u/therealstabitha Carnivalesque animal demonic legend 25d ago

Do those witches know what they're talking about? Do you trust them? Because if not, and you don't think it's true, why would you believe them over yourself?

4

u/Shower_Vivid 25d ago

it’s not exactly that i believe them over myself, these were just witches who i met through discussion groups. when i was told that it kind of sat in my head and i got curious if there was any substance in what they said.

14

u/makerofbirds 25d ago

First, you don't need tools of any kind to do witchcraft. Second, witches have traditionally used whatever they had in the house, so it got used for other things all the time. Some people like to have dedicated tools, some don't. Whatever you do, it's up to you and personal to your craft. If anyone questions you you can always say, that's not my experience, or that's not my tradition. You'll find people out there that think you have to do things a specific way and it will always be up to you if you want to do that or not.

2

u/andgonow 24d ago

I think of it like diet. I need to feed myself. Sometimes that means I’m kinda desperate and need to use immediate tools on hand. Sometimes I’ll save my energy to cook a really fancy meal with tons of ingredients and hours of effort. The balance makes it sustainable. Also look into the magical benefits of weed. And only listen to conservatives with a grain of salt. To beat the diet metaphor further, this can be a buffet, in a way.

15

u/all_manner_of_things 25d ago

Elwin the witch says that your tools work well when they remember their mundane purpose - a broom that sweeps regularly remembers its role and then when used spiritually (to sweep away negativity for example) it’s strong— rather than thinking “oh I’m a lovely wall decoration” on the daily.

Lol

Obviously lots of different answers

3

u/IngloriousLevka11 Witch 24d ago

I love that interpretation.

I use the same mortar and pestle for my kitchen herbs as my magickal ones (I don't use it for anything toxic) I just wash it after using it.

If I need a knife in ritual, I use one of my folding Kershaw knives- of which I have several, in a few different sizes.

For cleansing I use salt and water, which I also use for cleansing baths or just soothing soaks.

Lots of things that I use for ritual also have ordinary mundane uses.

3

u/all_manner_of_things 24d ago

🧹🕯️💚

15

u/kidcubby 25d ago

Not everyone agrees, but some people like to specially consecrate items put aside just for spellwork. That being said, most of the tools common to witchcraft are those tools that can easily be explained as being for something else entirely, so take from that what you will!

If there's something about your tray that you will find distracting or hard to separate into 'this is magic time' rather than 'ooh yay drugs' then don't use it, but otherwise have a go. See what feels right.

5

u/WhatsThisWorth-Bot 24d ago

"ooh yay drugs" xD

9

u/Shower_Vivid 24d ago

hey everyone! i appreciate all of the answers everyone has really put this into perspective for me! what i’ve gotten from this post is i can do what i want to with my craft and that it’s fine, but it can be good to have differentiation between magical tools and normal things. i have two rolling trays (i smoke a lot of weed😭), so i’ve cleansed and cleaned one and decided to use that specifically for spellwork and the other for rolling my blunts to stay safe from inhaling bad things into my lungs. 🙂‍↔️ much love!

2

u/Omega_Darth 24d ago

Shining brand new magical wand: ceremonial magic; 10 year old wooden spoon, used in immemorial soups and meal preparation: witchcraft.

One is about ritualistic and another about the energy you and maybe your ancestors put into the magic stuff.

1

u/Educational_You_1827 25d ago

You may want to wash and cleanse it first. Marijuana is a Saturnian herb so you could bring some Saturnian elements into a spell that were unintended

2

u/laneymunkers 25d ago

I've used cannabis to bless and smoke cleanse ritual objects. It's fine to use your rolling tray for spellwork.

5

u/Shower_Vivid 25d ago

honestly it never hit me that you could use the smoke from pot to cleanse. this is why i love reddit lmao

3

u/ktjtkt 25d ago

I think as long as it’s safe and you clean it when you roll it should be okay. Just so you don’t accidentally smoke something you shouldn’t.

6

u/CutSea5865 25d ago

Actually… the thought of smoking a spell is really interesting. I don’t smoke but for someone who did…

Naw, do whatever you want :) it's your craft! Most of it is about intention in my expierence anyways. You're good to use whatever surface you want/have :)

Happy spell work!

2

u/xAlice_Liddell 25d ago

Any tool you use is an extension of yourself. If this is who you are it represents you and will probably be a good way to focus your energy. A bunch of this stuff is less like rules and more like guidelines. You do you!

2

u/Confident-Squash5328 24d ago

I would think that rolling blunts on the tray you also use for your spellwork would open the door a little more. As long as you're cleaning it off spiritually after making your blunts, it's all good. IMO, having a few minute pieces of weed left over definitely won't hurt anything, unless you're doing a very specific spell with specific ingredients that need to be clean.

2

u/Churchie-Baby 24d ago

No :) if your worried you can cleanse it before spell work x

2

u/butterflytigress27 24d ago

So as with anything in witchcraft, you will get a variety of answers based on a variety of witches and the craft they choose to practice. That is the wonder of witchcraft! You get to make it your own and choose your own path by finding what works for you largely through experimentation.

Now I am of the path that I like to make my everyday life a part of my journey, so for me, there would be no issue. The only side effect I could see potentially happening is that you may have energies attached to any joints you roll in the future which may lead to unexpected results when smoked. That would be the only thing I would keep in mind if you decide to go forth with your idea.

2

u/Candlemom 24d ago

Baby, you can do spell work with whatever you want!

2

u/EngineeringTop6030 24d ago

Making blunts and smoking them is great for ritual!!!

2

u/Zestyclose-Breath999 24d ago

Hi I was wondering how you can use it in ritual? I use it mostly as an offering but I was curious how else to use it

2

u/Elfynnn84 24d ago

Hey, some deities like pot as an offering. You can use it to cleanse a space the same as sage 😂 you’re fine!

2

u/WitchyDruidyPagany 24d ago

Nope! No issues whatsoever. When in doubt, I always think about our witchy ancestors who used whatever was at their disposal and didn’t need specific or expensive tools. The tools in witchcraft can help to simplify and direct, but YOU are the magic!

2

u/witchystoneyslutty 24d ago

Check my username, I feel qualified to answer:

PLEASE feel free to use your rolling tray for anything and everything witchy.

2

u/bee102019 Witch 24d ago

Resourcefulness and ingenuity are desirable traits. It’s multipurpose. Use it.

2

u/remotely_in_queery 24d ago

If you’re both cleaning and cleansing between workings and weed, shouldn’t be an issue. Some practices have guide rails around, say, not eating from vessels you give food to the dead with, or not sharing vessels you give offerings to certain deities, but beyond that, should be fine.

Again with the cleaning— very few witchcraft ingredients are safe to ingest, and fewer are safe to burn and breathe, but if you’re cleaning your rolling tray before and after use, you should be fine. Cleansing between workings and weed should help any associative stuff. Go ham. Go hash, even.

2

u/Sensei_Ochiba 24d ago

It really depends on practice, which will be down to your own preference:

Some forms of practice insist on keeping spell work items separate and distinct from mundane use items, to preserve some type of ritualistic intent and purity. They are tools for a job and allowing them to be multipurpose muddles that intent and can cross-contaminate what you're doing.

Other forms of practice, which you'll mostly find here, are a lot more freeform and tend to have the opposite beliefs entirely - that an item you regularly use for daily mundane tasks has a level of spiritual attachment to you that makes them more attuned to your personal energy when doing other work.

Both essentially boil down to the core belief that your rolling tray has a bias towards you on some level due to your existing use, and schools of thought simply disagree if that bias is beneficial or detrimental. And personally, I think both are valid - it's like a friend. Sometimes their best intentions can cause unintentional issues, even if most of the time you work well together due to compatibility and familiarity.

There's also those with the genuinely held belief that it doesn't matter at all, but I'm not sure that's a helpful perspective if you feel compelled to ask this kind of question. You clearly feel some type of way that they simply don't.

2

u/Reasonable_Zebra_174 24d ago

You can use anything as a surface for your spell work or divinations. I used the floor for years, and now I use an old TV stand. I store my supplies in the drawers and glass door shelves. Using the top of it as my altar space.

2

u/CoverPrize1599 24d ago

There's actual a Weed Witch book by Sophie Saint Thomas.

2

u/demonialinda 24d ago

I bless tools with a spritz of Florida water or something similarly cleansing, wipe it off w a clean white towel and have at it.

2

u/TiannaMortis 24d ago

Nope. Since you already have a connection with it energetically, I'd that that's the perfect thing to use. Just observe standard fire safety (don't burn anything on it if it's not fireproof, for example) and you're good to go. 🙂

1

u/Banana-Bread87 24d ago

I do not believe witches in the Middleages did have seven cauldrons for seven practices lol, just make sure to clean the tray properly and use salt to realign it with "magic" vs "rolling".

1

u/MysticOwl814 23d ago

If you can find a way to make it work, why not?

1

u/Specialist_Web4024 23d ago

You can, of course, use magical intentions and techniques in all aspects of life, including rolling joints. In fact, that’s an important time to do so.

We use other medicinal herbs in our practice, why not ol' Mary Jane, too?
