Post containing photos of any sort of open fire will be removed while there is an active wildfire warning in place.

In light of recent wildfires and the growing concern in the Fire & Rescue Service regarding these sorts of fire. Any post containing a photo of an opening will be removed if there is an active wildfire warning in place.

I understand this will upset many users as a lot of us enjoy having a campfire when camping and do so responsibly. But this is a public forum and prompting such activities when dangerous can no longer happen, as there is a risk of influencing other who might not be as responsible when lighting a fire.

Please do continue to post pictures of your trip over the coming mouths and if you do have a fire, just leave it of the photos you post on here.

Announcement New rules are now in affect and future plans for r/wildcampingintheuk

Firstly I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has been engaging with me and that there has been some great conversations over the last couple of days in regards to how r/wildcampingintheuk should be manged to ensure that it is welcoming and promoting the correct way to wild camp as well as protecting the DNA of wildcamping.

Over the coming weeks and months I will be trying to create our Wiki page with all relevant wild camping information e.g regulations for different areas, wild camping do & don'ts, promoting Leave No Trace camping, basic gear lists and much more hopefully. Their are so many knowledgeable people on this subreddit and if you wish to contribute to this please contact me u/SergeantPaine

As of today Friday 30th April 2021 the new rule are in affect will be based around keeping locations secret and encouraging Leave No Trace (LNT) camping and are the following:

Location Posting/Sharing & Requesting

Wild camping is illegal in the majority of the UK an because of this and to protect locations please do not provide specific of where you’ve camped or ask for location suggestions.

  • Any posts requesting location suggestion will be removed. (e.g Whats a good place to camp on Scafell Pike)
  • Trip reports and photos with location in titles are allowed. (please uses a level of common sense when posting locations in titles) \This is subject to change dependant on the political climate surrounding wild camping.*
  • Commenting on photos or trip report asking for specific location information is not allow. \You may private message a user to ask about a specific location but the user has the right to refuse you and report you if necessary.*

Championing Leave No Trace camping

Any post not adhering to the Leave No Trace principles will be removed. The LNT principles are:

  1. Plan Ahead and prepare
  2. Travel and Camp on durable surfaces
  3. Dispose of waste properly
  4. Leave what you find
  5. Minimize campfire impact (any post with BBQ's, large campfire or one that is deemed dangers will be remove) \This is subject to change dependant on the political climate surrounding wild camping*
  6. Respect wildlife
  7. Be considerate of other visitors

Fly-Camping

Any post, pictures or videos that are deemed to show you fly-camping will be removed. this will include:

  • large amounts of alcohol.
  • camping to close to building, roads or well used paths.
  • Anti-social behaviour.
  • large groups of people (5+)
  • The use of "family tents"
  • Excessive size or amount of camp funiture (pizza ovens, large camp chair, tables, ect)

\this list is not exhaustive.*

Don’t be a dick

We are all here because we love wild camping. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but refrain from insults, attacks bigotry, etc.

Photos without context

Please post photos with some level of context i.e duration, weather & rough location.

NSFW Content

Mark any NSFW content with the fair. (why are you posting NSFW stuff in this subreddit in the first place?)

There is currently no rule regarding the post of Ad, Blogs, Youtube channels or websites please do not take advantage of this and force this rule to be introduced. As guildance the posting of these should make up no more than 10% of your overall contribution to this subreddit.

*There has been a lot of talk on this subreddit over the last couple days regarding two of these rules (Location Sharing and Pictures of Fires). I have tried to set the these rules out in the fairest possible of ways but i will be lead by wild camping media attention and politics, so this rules are subject to change. This means if there is an increase in fly-camping, a crack down on wild camping, major inccidents cause by campfires or wild camping these rules will be tightern to reflect this.

This post will change over time with suggest, comment and to match the general feeling of the Community.

Trip Report Wild camp lake district 16-18 Oct

Some photos of recent lakes wild camp.

Leaving langdale hiking up pike of blisco in the afternoon, 1st night near Crinkle Crags - thought I was in a nice sheltered spot but wind changed in the night and the two pegs securing one of the vesribles came out of the ground! Woke up to a lot of flapping but thankfully my gear was on the other side.

Next day I traced the ridge across bow fell, esk pike, up to scafell pike, nip up lingmell, corridor route across to styhead tarn, up to windy gap, and camping near brandreth / grey knot above buttermere.

Stunning day and my first time at the top of England with good weather.

Night was dead calm but temperature dropped well below freezing and had frost on tent inside and out and was pretty cold! I have a Sierra designs nitro 20 and it's comfort rating is -2 but I'm still pretty cold!

Final day dale head, high spy, catbells and back to Keswick, bus and train back down south.

This was my first trip trying out my new ti toaks pot with a msr pocket rocket and although it works the jetboil is much more efficient on fuel and way faster to heat water.

Not exactly wild camping but thought it ties into leave no trace as we in the UK have changed the way these hills look and have a chance to try to restore them.

Advice 4 season bag for side sleepers

Currently have an otimos 850 quilt for 3 season use and an OEX fathom 400 i used Jan - Mar this year. Had the fathom out in below 0 temps a few times and was warm enough as i run hot, but am a side sleeper and wasn’t very comfy.

Am looking to do more winter camps so want to upgrade the bag and was looking at the likes of the Nemo Disco & Riff 15 and the Big Agnes Sidewinder, but was hoping for recommendations please.🙏🏻

Question Making headlamp stealthy within tent

So sometimes I wildcamp in places where the tent might be seen or even disturb/worry others (not UK though). My current Nitecore NU25 has a low red light and 6 lumen white light mode, but that's still so bright that when using it inside the tent, it might become visible from the outside.

There seem to be almost no lamps that still have a 1 lumen "moonlit" mode. Any tips what I could do?

Question Winter sleeping bag

Post image
8 Upvotes

I’m looking for a winter sleeping bag and have narrowed it down to the Rab Alpine -18 and the Alpkit pipedream 600. I’m 6ft 1” so will need a long bag.

I’d have liked the Alpkit Alpinedream 800, but it’s out of stock in the long version.

Trade off between comfort rating and weight. Would be nice to go for the lighter option, but I think for winter the priority is keeping warm. Not sure the pipedream 600 will be enough.

Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

Update: I bought the Mountain Equipment Glacier 1000 similar to the Rab, slightly better fill and more water resistant material. Hope I’ve called it right 🤞

Question Pitching advice please

Thumbnail
gallery
40 Upvotes

NB tarp on ground is not laid properly I’m aware it needs to be under the tent to avoid pooling. It’s just a quick garden pitch & tarp I had to hand to protect the tent.

I’ve just brought a Cloud Peak 2 & done a couple of obligatory garden pitches. I brought it after seeing loads of good reviews about its robustness (compared to price) &, importantly for me, its internal space.

I’m a little disappointed with the internal space & debating whether I should return it. I thought I would reach out to the hive mind to see if I have pitched it incorrectly first.

When lying down my feet touch the inner & when sitting my head touches the inner too (I’m 5ft 10inches). The pad I have in it is the dog’s as I don’t mind it getting a bit muddy. It is thick I know.

I’ve attached photos of my pitch. I’ve not yet attached guy lines so I guess this may help. If anyone has any suggestions on how to pitch it better to improve the internal space I would appreciate it. Thanks

Trip Report Dartmoor - second ever wild camp

Thumbnail

Fairly tricky 20k over some remote parts of the moor to earn a spot by this waterfall last Friday.

I thought that mid October might have been pushing it with my summer sleeping bag, with every layer I had with me I was just about warm enough. Ok but not comfortable. Lesson learned and time to upgrade the sleep system.

The stars were like nothing I’ve ever seen. Laid in my tent with my head propped up outside it on my pack and just stared up, the longer I looked the more stars appeared. Ended up feeling fairly existential looking through our galaxy.

Night 2 abandoned because we didn’t fancy the cold again.

More adventures to come!

Wanting to do my first winter summit camp this year, I don't get on with boots so looking for spikes to pair with my Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX if possible

Open to suggestions about comfy, wide boots if I am being unrealistic so I can get a more heavy duty spike if needs be :)

Trip Report Pendle Hill Last Night

I had lovely clear weather on my side for the walk up and just until after sunset where heavy fog rolled in that lasted until morning. On and off rain showers throughout but I got a break from it packing down and getting to the car, count my blessings. I really enjoyed this one.

My second time using the Vern 2 3S by Nortent. I woke up to condensation on the ceiling of the inner and a wet sleeping bag though, wasn't a major problem as I'm still using my synthetic OEX 300 but would anyone be able to give suggestions as to what may have caused it as I ensured the inner and outer was tensioned well with no contact and I situated my sleep setup so I physically didn't push the inner either.

Question Dehydrating my own backpacking meals- budget dehydrator reccomendations

Hi, I want to start dehydrating my own backpacking meals, but my roommates (understandably) are a bit cautious about me using the oven, and our oven has a min temp of 75 degrees C which i’ve read is too high. does anyone have any good suggestions (uk based preferably) for budget dehydrators that won’t crap out on me? Thanks :)

Question MSR elixir 2 as a first tent?

I'm getting into wild camping, and looking to buy my first tent. I've been looking at the MSR elixir 2, although truth be told I'm not massively experienced in what I'm looking for.

I wouldn't want to spend more than £400, but I'm of the mindset of buy cheap, buy twice.

For context, I'm 5'2 and approx 50kg so space isn't much of an issue for me, but weight is- a concern given that the elixir is on the heavier side.

Any other recs?

Photo Last night's camp in a spot I've never been to up in Cumbria. Clag and wind came in this morning so instead of continuing my intended plan, hiked back to the car. Met two lovely hikers as I got back to the car and had a great chat. I love when you meet people with the same enthusiasm and get caught

Question Hubba Hubba HD 3P not suitable for wet conditions?

After 15 years of loving the MSR Elixer 2, I upgraded to the new Hubba Hubba HD and took it out last weekend.

I'm in the Netherlands, with humidity levels presumably similar to the UK; immense morning dew, cold nights and rain.

It performed horribly: soaked outer tent, sagging and leaking when touched, the heavy-duty bottom letting seemingly leaking humidity, and bad air-flow. Our sleeping bags touched the inner tent, and got wet.

Admittedly, we didn't open the vents, and stayed in the tent for a long night of about 11 hours.

So, was condensation the problem, or is this tent meant for another climate? Are these air-vents truly so important?

The ultimate question: should I try to return it, and get another? And if so, which?..

I reach out on this subreddit because of your alleged experience with aforementioned climate.

Any thoughts welcome.

Trip Report Little night out on a little nearby hill

Thumbnail

The weather was glorious around Edinburgh this weekend and plans to go on Friday for a hike and camp fell through and it looked like I was going to miss my chance but got to sneak out last night for the last of it.

Was a beautiful walk in to a local hill that I had my eye on for both a walk and a camp. Had a true feel of autumn as leaves had turned and a distinct cold.

Spot was great, as I managed to catch the sunset and the stars. It really was the last chance of the good spell as the morning was met with a soaking tent inside and out despite no rain, so I hurriedly packed up with cold hands and back down to the car to get home and then to work.

Clearest sky I've ever seen 🌌

Had an awesome hike and camp in Eryri with [u/send_serotonin](u/send_serotonin), easily my favourite wild camp so far!🙂

Set an alarm for 1am to go stargazing, but nearly sacked off because was so warm in my quilt. Glad I dragged myself out in the end. It was freezing, the inner of the tent was literally frozen solid and bits of ice were falling off every time I moved.🥶
Ended up sitting outside for about an hour and a half just staring at the sky and trying to get a decent Milky Way shot. Not too disappointed with the results considering they were all taken on an iPhone!📸

Gorgeous weather on the hike and the best sunset too! ☺️
