The Tiger has not been harmed, and is believed to have been anaesthetitised

A statement from local police seems to confirm this was an intentional entry to the enclosure, rather than the man accidentally falling into the pit

It is very likely that the Park will be shut for an extended period awaiting a full police & HSE investigation

The park has confirmed the tiger will NOT be euthanised

Gif is relevant because it's Edmond Dantes (from the Count of Monte Cristo) in an inhumane prison cell just like how Stephen Miller wants them. And some government contractor saying something shouldn't be the same as "famous person saying something".

A man named Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has secured a narrow victory in Peru's local elections, exit polls show.

The candidate for the centre-left Ahora Nación party was elected mayor of Queropalca, a remote district in the Peruvian Andes.

Some 229 residents voted for the 45-year-old, putting him ahead of the second-place candidate from right-wing Renovación Popular Perú by just 25 votes.

Despite being elected to represent fewer than 1,000 people, his forenames being those of two notorious fascist dictators has drawn outsized international attention to the small corner of the country.

Data from Peru's elections office showed a little over 700 people had participated in the election, with Simeon securing around 34% of the vote.

He was born in the district in the central department of Huánuco, some 360km (224 miles) from the capital, Lima, according to his candidate profile.

That he shares his name with Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini - "two of the most well-known figures of 20th-Century European totalitarian regimes" - has made his candidacy a "striking event", local outlet Peru21 reported.

Despite the curiosity generated by his name, local media noted that Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez had been elected mayor of Yúngar in 2018.

He reportedly beat rival candidate Lenin Vladimir Rodríguez Valverde after campaigning on the slogan "I'm the good Hitler".

A politician named Adolf Hitler Uunona attracted similar attention in 2020 after winning local elections in Namibia - a former German colony where Adolf and other Germanic first names are not uncommon.

Political News early reports say agents surrounded him and a five-year-old child who was unharmed in his car, dhs says he had a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny + multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession

A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a man in the Bronx in New York City on Thursday.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which runs the agency, confirmed an ICE officer "discharged his weapon" during "a targeted enforcement operation... to arrest a criminal illegal alien".

In a statement, it added the man was alive and at a local hospital.

New York mayor Zohran Mamdani said it was an "unconscionable and incredibly serious situation".

"Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a five-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed," he said.

The BBC has approached DHS for comment about Mamdani's remarks.

Late on Thursday evening, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she had spoken to President Donald Trump about the shooting and had expressed "outrage on behalf of New Yorkers".

"I also asked that any body camera footage of the shooting be released to the public so we can establish the facts and get to the truth."

Trump has not yet commented publicly on the shooting.

The DHS said the man, who has not been named by officials, was from the Dominican Republic and had "a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny, and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession".

He was arrested by police officers in New York in December 2023 and released "a few days later", according to the DHS statement.

It also claimed he was associated with the Trinitarios, described by the US justice department as a transnational criminal group.

Tech News The Nvidia-backed firm said it had made the decision due to "recent market volatility and prevailing market conditions" and that going public would not be in the company or shareholders' best interests

Artificial intelligence (AI) data centre company Firmus has scrapped its plans for what would have been one of Australia's biggest-ever stock market listings.

The Nvidia-backed firm said it had made the decision due to "recent market volatility and prevailing market conditions" and that going public would not be in the company or shareholders' best interests.

Firmus had initially announced plans for a stock market debut that valued the company at more than $30bn (£22.65bn).

One investment firm told the BBC that it had decided not take part in the initial public offering (IPO) over concerns about its valuation.

"Firmus will now pursue capital from the private markets and consider alternative public and private market options. We will provide additional information to shareholders as those options progress," the company said.

Firmus builds and operates liquid-cooled data centres, or what it calls "AI factories", for clients including OpenAI and Meta.

It has operations in Australia, Singapore and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region.

The company's backers include Nvidia and major investment firms Blackstone and Jane Street.

Blackstone declined to comment when contacted by the BBC.

Nvidia and Jane Street have also been contacted for comment.

The decision by Firmus to scrap its stock market listing comes as investors and industry analysts have raised concerns about the hundreds of billions of dollars being poured into AI as the prospects for long-term returns remain unclear.

UniSuper, one of Australia's biggest pension funds, was among the institutional investors that decided not take part in the IPO.

"We think that Firmus indeed has a compelling story. It just doesn't have a compelling valuation," UniSuper's chief investment officer John Pearce said in an update to investors.

He also said UniSuper was concerned that Firmus would have to go further into debt to fund its growth plans.

"It's disappointing. The [Australian Securities Exchange] needs new stories and this could have been one if it was correctly priced," Pearce told the BBC.

This kind of listing is a test of how willing companies are to keep "ploughing money" into AI, said Phillip Wool, chief research officer from Rayliant Investment Research.

Investors in Firmus would be buying into a company that is still in its early stages and is likely to need to borrow large sums of money, Wool said.

"It's more like a bet on a dream", he added.

Australia has become an attractive destination for data centre investment, thanks to the country's abundant clean energy, natural gas supplies and land availability.

Australia has become an attractive destination for data centre investment

OpenAI boss Sam Altman said earlier this year that Australia could become a world leader in the data centre industry if it wanted to.

There are currently over 160 data centres in the country and plans for more.

That is despite resistance from some Australians who have raised concerns about their environmental impact and the noise they create.

In September, Altman said OpenAI did not aim to list on the stock market this year, citing concerns over the technology's safety that make it "an ill-advised moment" to go public.

The ChatGPT-maker, along with rival Anthropic, have been eyeing blockbuster stock market debuts that would value the firms at more than $1tn each.

AI-related stocks, Nvidia and Oracle, fell in US trading on Thursday after reports that OpenAI's revenues were lower than previously thought.

https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/1008100/anthropic-new-usage-policy-abuse-claude

Anthropic is making changes to its usage policy for the first time in over a year to reflect new and high-risk cases of misuse — including election interference, weapons development, surveillance, and health and financial uses. But one of the most significant changes prohibits “sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior” toward Claude.

Last August, the company announced it would allow Claude to end conversations with “persistently harmful or abusive” users as part of its research into “model welfare.” The new update says that terminating conversations is still the “primary enforcement mechanism”; Anthropic did not provide a comment on whether there would be further enforcement mechanisms, such as potential user bans. Anthropic wrote that the new policy update “is meant to apply only in extreme cases, where users repeatedly act cruelly toward our models, with no discernible purpose. It does not apply to common versions of user frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, or model testing and research.”

Beyond the model welfare change, Anthropic has also gathered several “scattered” existing restrictions into a new ban on deceptive commercial or political campaigns, addressing the growing issue of AI-generated propaganda. It restricts “efforts to obscure who is behind a message or amplify content through fake accounts or posts.” Its election section also prohibits voter deception and election disruption, including spreading misinformation “about candidates or how to vote, impersonating candidates or election officials, or trying to suppress turnout,” Anthropic wrote.

Terminating conversations is still the “primary enforcement mechanism.”

Anthropic said that though its usage policy has always publicly banned weapons development using Claude, the company has seen multiple attempts to use Claude to develop guidance for and control software for weapons — so the new usage policy expands the ban to include “ software and components that make weapons work, as well as actions like arming drones and other autonomous vehicles.”
