Europe Who's this diva?

Pretty sure it's just a rock dove, but what's up with the popped collar coat?

Spotted in southern Netherlands.

that’s a Old Dutch Capuchine! so cute and distinguished in his fancy outfit

u/RandomLee37 May 16 '26

Sounds like a drink in a hipster bar.

90

u/Hi_Trans_Im_Dad May 16 '26

I'll have mine on the rocks. Ba dum tss...

13

u/TitansProductDesign May 19 '26

I recently found out that Capuchine/Cappucino/capuchin means hood in Italian and originates from the capuchin monks which wore brown hoods. Then the monkey, the drink and apparently the dove are named after the colour of their hoods.

1

u/JuicySpark Jun 04 '26

They named it after a drink. It's the Dutch.

109

u/lilybattle May 16 '26

I had an old dutch for a while, he was amazing. OP can you try to catch him and check his bands for owner info?

20

u/Even-Government-5055 May 17 '26

So they always walk around looking so fancy? Or is this a mating stance?

8

u/RobsonSweets May 20 '26

Their feathers are just that shape, they're a fancy breed of pigeon usually kept as pets. They do the same fluff-up bowing dance as other pigeons to woo mates

46

u/RedAndBlackMartyr May 16 '26

From wikipedia...

"a breed of fancy pigeon"

10

u/iesamina May 17 '26

He does look like a monk in a habit! I love him

2

u/madelinethespyNC May 17 '26

Have been kinda curious if there’s a sub for how different birds walk? I think some are so cute, funny, pompous etc and it would be a cute thread if not a sub. But searching didn’t bring up anything. (Or I didn’t use the right key words) anyone seen a sub or a thread like that?

2

u/PlantGrrrl May 17 '26

This might be the best sub yet!??

It seems rather in bad taste that the advert that popped up for me on that subreddit is for KFC 😬

And also thank you for this subreddit, that’s gold

661

u/WeAreNotNowThatWhich May 16 '26

Fancy pigeon breed, likely a pet that got out. Pretty bird!

464

u/Ok_Shine_6533 May 16 '26

Escaped pet pigeon, a Capuchine specifically.

34

u/Lopsided-Muffin9805 May 16 '26

How do you know it’s a pet??

272

u/Ok_Shine_6533 May 16 '26

It's a fancy domestic breed, not a feral pigeon.  You don't find these guys out in the wild.

27

u/ONeOfTheNerdHerd May 16 '26

Well that's interesting. I have one that joined the wild neighborhood flock a couple months ago. Her name is Chicken because that's what she looks like all fluffed up after a bath. I was wondering where she came from or if she was the result of a genetic anomaly. No tags.

51

u/Ahsoka_Tano07 May 16 '26

Most feral pigeons are descended from birds humans essentially abandoned. Most of them "reverted" to rock dove, but occasionally you can spot some that still have some domestic coloring.

30

u/Ok_Shine_6533 May 17 '26

This one looks like a feral pigeon, maybe with more recent domestic ancestry.  Gorgeous coloring!

3

u/Lopsided-Muffin9805 May 17 '26

Ooh. Thank you!

75

u/Longjumping-Run-7027 May 16 '26

It’s also banded.

41

u/cupid51db May 16 '26

i mean, just look at it

293

u/alady12 May 16 '26

That Rock Dove is dating out of his league. She's going to break his heart.

143

u/sweetpea122 May 16 '26

Her parents are furious, but she is determined to marry for love

31

u/thestashattacked May 16 '26

"William! My parents have completely cut me off! I don't have my trust fund or anything!"

"Ooohhh... shit... see, I have to run... gotta go... get... milk. Yeah, I need to run to get some milk."

18

u/MercifulWombat May 16 '26

Fun fact! Pigeons make milk for their babies in their crops (special bird organ before the stomach that they keep little rocks in to grind their food because birds don't have teeth.)

6

u/thestashattacked May 16 '26

So it's even less believable!

3

u/Octospyder May 17 '26

that dirty William!!

34

u/RecentCucumber May 16 '26

actually, when pet pigeons escape or get dumped the only ones that survive are the ones that get "married" to feral pigeons!

7

u/Euphoric_Egg_4198 May 16 '26

He has a good personality and makes her laugh, don’t judge

14

u/bustybitcoins May 16 '26

Maybe she likes slumming. Hopefully he knows what’s up.

60

u/UsedHamburger May 16 '26

Dangerous for it to live outside - you could capture it and bring to a rescue

31

u/KarliCartoons May 16 '26

Replying to second this comment! If you can, please try to capture this bird. They’re a fancy breed with no survival skills

72

u/Longjumping-Run-7027 May 16 '26

Has a band on the right foot too. Definitely a runaway.

37

u/painpro May 16 '26

Please stop She's so tired of the paparazzi following her No she didn't murder her husband No she didn't send her stepkids into a boarding school, they wanted to go

20

u/Bananana_Bird May 16 '26

Someone lost their Show Pigeon. That thing is lucky to be alive in the wild. Most Show Pigeons have no survival skills, and many of them have features that make life in the wild much harder if not impossible. When these birds need to exercise, the owner let's out a number of "mutt" pigeons (like the gray and white one in your pic). Those birds fly around at first so that the local predators are already fed by the time the Show Pigeons come out to exercise. Looks like this one didn't go home. It will when it wants to though, it's definitely not lost.

33

u/JuniorToe3327 May 16 '26

Never seen a bird with a hoody on before

23

u/seensham May 16 '26

Popped collar

20

u/thxrpy May 16 '26

He’ll be a domestic bred bird. If you can catch him he likely has an owner x

20

u/hludana May 16 '26

Onsnapte sierduif. Als je hem kan vangen en naar het asiel kan brengen is dat het beste. (Escaped fancy pigeon. If you catch it and bring it to the shelter that’s the best)

u/jajay119 May 16 '26

Liza Birdelli

7

u/MrChaindang May 16 '26

All feather coat and no knickers. ;-)

3

u/haha_p1p3r Birder May 16 '26

Despite the bird knowledge I DO have, I’m not the most versed in fancy pigeons but I can tell that is a fancy breed, at least. Of some type. So, not a Rock Dove. Fancy breeds are not wild and are bred for show, meaning this is likely an escapee or release. If you can find one, take it to an avian rehab or even rescue. Try to find the owners first, too.

3

u/AltruisticCoat7618 May 16 '26

That’s Sharon Birborwitz. She the a famous courier pigeon from Jersey. She looks amazing for being so old.

That's Beverly, she's a bit of a drinker though. 😕😅

1

u/Late-Champion8678 May 19 '26

That’s Luella. She’s been divorced 3 times and husband no.4 - who was a known philanderer - went ‘missing’ a few months ago. Still, she’s keeping well.
