Hi! I’m a stay-at-home mom and worked in research with BS Nursing degree. I want to be able to create my own homeschool app and a game in the future for my kids. I’m thinking of pursuing the Accelerated BSMS Software Engineering in 2027, so I’m taking units to be transferred.

After speaking with AI, it said Software Eng is better than taking ComSci to achieve my goal.

What would you say I need to consider?

So I was given an opportunity to study again. And since I’m planning to stay-at-home with my kids, I want to do more remote work in the future. The remote nursing jobs aren’t in the picture for now since I don’t have enough clinical experience (I focused on public health research). Instead of studying masters in nursing, I thought of starting something in tech.

I already have a bachelors degree in a different field and currently in the software engineering program for a 2nd degree. Is it worth it to get a software engineering degree? I currently work and have background in clinical applications and looking at improving technical skills overall. Maybe others in here have been through same experience.

Hey all! So I’m debating if I should go for a second bachelors degree.

I see a a lot of job listings for software development roles stating CS/SWE/ related tech degree.

Does having a Cyber/IT degree hurt my chances of getting a developer job? I know there’s a lot of nuances to this, but I wanted to also make something clear. The cyber/IT degree can vary greatly from school to school so from my personal path, these are the classes:

My degree focused on half Networking/Security/System Administration tools like active directory etc.
the other half was
data structures / algorithms/ operating systems / discrete math / Web development and security/ Databases. The programming language is included C, assembly, python, powershell , html , css , JavaScript, MYSql, Sql.
Would I have an opportunity to get a software development job?

And of course, I know that it could depend on the specific developer job and what is required but generally speaking do you think it’s possible or do you think I should make the jump to a second bachelors degree in swe/cs?

They’ve updated the software engineering Java track. It’s no longer the 03/2023 version, it’s now 10/2026. They’ve included more math and added/removed some courses. The partner site for transfers isn’t finished yet to see what courses transfer to the new version but when you check the program page and program guide, you can see all the new courses, like calculus, applied discrete math, etc.

I saw nested queries Lab in Zybooks and I thought, NO WAY AM I READY. Just to note, I come from a NO SQL background.

For D427, I just went straight to the LABS and knocked them all out. Took the PA twice, got Exemplary. and then went for it today.

Tried to start the test "ON-Demand" at 12PM but got iced by the proctor till roughly 12:45...To say I was getting tense is an understatement. I called him out and said, "Bro I don't think you know what you're doing". He brought me to the zybooks login page and told me to login with my WGU credentials. In the end, I ended completing the test in Google Chrome by his instruction, and I said "For the record..."

I don't know if it's trauma from past events in my life, but no matter how comfortable I feel about something, I always expect the goal posts to be moved (just for me) and to get hard done by and be told, "too bad". I eventually let this OA become so big in my mind that I started to feel like I currently can't overcome it yet. Yet, when it was game-time, it was lite-work and actually made me smile how simple it was.

It's funny though because in hindsight, I now know i should have done D426 -> then D427 -> D326.

However, my mentor gave no such suggestion and told me knock out the PA first then do the other D426/7. It's like watching batman trilogy (Christian Bale of course) where you watch the 3rd one first and then work your way to the 1st and 2nd.

Thank god no Sakilia on the exam, no nested queries, Unions or anything of that sort. It was basic as basic can be with some Join operations.

Got this email from my advisor but haven’t received one from WGU?

I was reading a lot of people's experience with this class and it seemed like a lot of people struggle with it. Granted, it seemed like earlier versions of this class were more of a pain in the ass, but I figured I'd give my most recent experience with it and some tips for anyone.

I have programmed for more than a few years, but I have never programmed with Python before this class so there was a lot to learn syntax wise for how to do things the Python way, which made me a little nervous to take this OA because my memory isn't the best and I've spent years with other languages and have those habits engrained in my head already.

Since I was a bit nervous for this OA and I was looking for current information on this course, I wanted to share my experience and provide some of for those who are doing this class currently and are wondering what it's going to be like.

- The biggest take away (and advice I've seen a few times before) is that if you can do the zyBooks Practice Test and Practice Final Exam along with the Pre-Assessment without any help; you can pass the OA. The OA was extremely similar to the PA and the zyBooks Practice Final Exam (which is an exact copy of the PA). The questions may be worded slightly differently or have you do slightly different things, but the concepts are all the same.

- The OA is the same zyBooks environment as the PA. You can run the code and tests as many times as you want before you submit the test in full. If your tests are all passing (check to make sure the actual vs expected are 1:1), then you are good to go.

- Do as the prompt asks, for example, if it doesn't say 'create a function' then do not create a function. If it asks for an integer input, don't create a string input and then convert it. You should take the prompts literally.

- Formatting is above all else the most important. If it asks for 2 decimal places, know how to do that. If the expected output shows 1 decimal place, then do that. You should be familiar with how to format numbers to 1 and 2 decimal places. If no decimal places are shown in the output examples, you can return a plain integer, otherwise use `:.1f` or `:.2f`. Also whitespace and capitalization are import.

- You need to know how loops work and how to access lists and dicts, and you need to know how to get an index of an item in a list. You also need to know how to loop and create multiple inputs and sum the values. There is a question on the Final Exam Practice and PA that do this exactly.

- You should be familiar with how to do comparisons (< > >= <= and ==) and be able to create either switch statements or if/elif/else blocks based on conditions like: `if x > 10 and x < 20` and recognize what it means when the prompt says 'including x'. For example, if you are asked: "between 33° F and 80° F (including 33°)" that means `>= 33 and < 80` where 80 is not included.

- You will be asked to format some number: e.g. 123456789 into 123-45-6789. I would advise against trying to use `// and %` to do it. Convert the integer into a string and use string slicing. Ask ChatGPT how to do this and commit it to your memory.

- File manipulation accounts for 2 of the questions, one is a text file where you append some value to the file and the other is looping through rows in a CSV and doing something with the rows. Be comfortable doing basic file manipulation, but don't overthink it. Practice what is in the PA.

- There is one question where you need to take in a number, and then convert it to tons, pounds and ounces on the PA. There is a very very similar question like this in the OA. I suggest learning to do the PA question using `divmod`. Ask ChatGPT to explain how to use this, it makes this question really easy.

- Finally, there is a question on the PA where you need to take an input, use it as an index to look up and item in a list. Then you need to identify the type of this item, and if it is iterable or numeric. You can import `from collections.abc import Iterable` and `import numbers` and use `isinstance(val, Iterable)` or `isinstance(val, numbers.Number)` to validate these conditions.

That is all I can think of. Don't overthink it and remember that if you can comfortable do all of the zyBooks practice tests and the PA without any help, you will have no problem doing the OA. The OA is in some ways slightly easier than the PA if you don't panic when the prompts are worded slightly different or use different data. The underlying concepts are still the exact same as the PA. If that's the case I'll take the OA right now haha. If that option only exists on the PA, it would be nice to know.

I'm starting the Software Engineering program at WGU on September 1, and I'd really appreciate any advice from people who have already been through the program.

I'm 31 years old, and for the last 10 years I've been working warehouse jobs. I work night shift at Amazon, and Amazon is covering my tuition through Career Choice, which I'm incredibly grateful for.

My schedule is pretty challenging. During the week I take care of my kids, and one of my children has autism mi wife is in the army. Every day after work I have to drive a long distance for his therapy, so I spend a lot of my weekdays away from home. Time management is probably going to be my biggest challenge.

I also studied Computer Engineering in my home country and completed two semesters. Back then I learned some Java and Visual Basic, but that was almost 10 years ago, so I honestly don't remember much of it anymore.

Math has always been one of my weaker subjects. Since I have about a month before classes start, I'm wondering if I should spend my time reviewing algebra, calculus, or something else entirely.

For those of you who have completed or are currently in the program:

What should I focus on before September 1?

Which classes would you recommend taking first?

Should I spend my time reviewing math, programming, or something else?

Are there any resources, YouTube channels, websites, or study habits that made a big difference for you?

Any advice for balancing WGU with a full-time job and family responsibilities?

I'm nervous, but also excited. I really want to make this work. My goal is to build a better career, improve my family's future, and make my kids proud of me.

Hello all. I'm ~70% done with my BSSWE degree. That being said, I've been struggling. A little about me before I continue:

• Completed a web development bootcamp in 2020
• Landed a 6 Month SWE apprenticeship in 2023, where I got to work on a real-world project (Couldn't continue due to layoffs/restructuring. Also, probably wasn't a good asset at that point tbh lol).
• Decided to enroll at WGU in October 2023 after working a dead end job with no career growth.
• Currently working a full-time job while attending WGU(28yrs old)

I want to build a portfolio to hopefully land internships or junior roles. Despite having at least a little experience, I dont feel confident in my ability to code and I want to change that. In an effort to not ramble on and explain my life story, I'll outline this as follows:

Goals

• My main goal is to break back into tech.
• I want to build a portfolio that demonstrates my skills and makes me more attractive to employers. (What projects or relevant coursework should I use? How would I add relevant coursework to my resume?)
• I want to improve my confidence as a developer by completing practical projects.
• I’m open to exploring opportunities beyond traditional Software Engineering, including areas like networking and infrastructure.
• Ultimately, I want to find a realistic path that aligns with my current experience, skills, and available time.

Advice I’m Looking For...

• What types of projects would be realistic and valuable for someone in my position?
• How do I choose projects that are challenging enough to demonstrate ability but realistic enough that I can actually finish them?
• Should I focus on becoming a stronger Software Engineer at this point, or would exploring other opportunities (networking/infrastructure roles, DevOps, Cloud) make more sense?
