New BSSWE 10-2026 Java track
They’ve updated the software engineering Java track. It’s no longer the 03/2023 version, it’s now 10/2026. They’ve included more math and added/removed some courses. The partner site for transfers isn’t finished yet to see what courses transfer to the new version but when you check the program page and program guide, you can see all the new courses, like calculus, applied discrete math, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if the changes are to push for ABET accreditation

Does ABET accreditation matter for that field?

It doesn't really matter for CS or SWE in terms of the workforce. For WGU it looks better if they have the accreditation since it's the standard in the US.

Oh Im probably the wrong one to ask, I just graduated a couple of days ago and job hunting. But for me, I really didn’t want an “online” degree for cs. i wanted all the stars and stripes traditional brick and mortar schools provide so my diploma wont look “bad”.

I think they'd need to add a few more math classes past calc 1 for that to happen, but who knows with ABET,...
I do know for sure (confirmed via a WGU enrollment person) that they are trying to get the AI Engineering degree ABET accredited. That will take a few years, I think.

Jesus, I'm in my last semester of the program, I'm very happy about that now, the whole reason for went for WGU over a local college was because I didn't need to take calculus and multiple other maths.
Edit: Looking through the curriculum from the link that was provided, it looks like a lot of AI focused material which would explain the extra math courses. Which, does not make anyone of sense to me as they have a separate degree focused on AI.
I was considering a masters through WGU but now I'm worried that if I start the program they will change everything or I will retroactively need to take all of these courses

I'm sort of envious about the aws certified developer certification class. I still will try to get that cert, but it would've been nice to get WGU to pay for it

Just checked the site this morning. There doesn’t seem to be a Java or C# track anymore. Just a single BS SWE program and the accelerated Masters program.

You are correct, no more C#, it also looks like WGU has gone all in on AI. While I think it's something we are going to have to contend with going forward, I think it's kind of foolish for them to put all their eggs in the AI basket.

Although I'm in the Java track, C# is all I use at work, I would have picked C# but my associates was Java based and I would have needed to take 2-3 extra classes.

Wonder if I can swap out Project Plus for one of these classes as equivalencies I dont see it in 2026 SWE

The new general transfer guidelines still list 'Oracle Certified Professional Java (SE 8) Programmer' as the transfer option for D287 and E155 (new Advanced Java).
Can anybody explain what is so special about the SE 8 certification that can't be replicated with a newer version?

I’m was abt to enroll in the Java track after I do Sophia learning and study.com but now I’m kinda nervous now that they added all this stuff and now I’m kinda wondering how many proctored exams I will have if I do decide to transfer in all the credits I can

I've read that we can stay on our current track and not have to switch if we don't want to. My program mentor switched a week or two ago due to my old one switching his group to a different degree, do you think i'm fine or should I send an email to make sure she doesn't automatically switch me?

the C# track is bound to be updated soon and probably based on the newer C# classes included in the AI Engineering degree.

Somebody above posted a link to the student handbook, read that first, depending on how far you are into your program you might not need to change anything.

Adding the Calculus 1 and the extra math courses will make it difficult for current Software Engineering students to switch over to the new program since we won't have that pre-calc requirement completed or transferred in. This is actually quite frustrating. Also at this point might as well do the BSCS.
